I have no speakers for my PC at the moment. Looking for just the basic two speaker set up.
What's the best I can get for $40 or less?

Or where should I look?

Thank you.

For 40 or less I would go with the logitech x-230's. I have these and they are great for a 2.1 setup. I think the x-240's are out now as well, but the reviews aren't as good.

Some Best Buy stores have an unadvertised special for Altec Lansing 2.1 Speakers and Subwoofer for $14.99, Model# VS-4121. I bought mine 6 months ago and had a friend buy one 2 weeks ago, and we went to different stores. Often the speakers on display don't reflect actual stock. I found these by looking at the boxes stored above the racks in the cages, this particular model had no unit on display. The employee scanned it and it rang up $14.99.

Like everyone else has been saying.

Great pair of speakers, I use them for my Xbox 360 playing through the monitor.

Quick Question about those speakers...Do I have to worry about having the subwoofer too close to the monitor? (or does it have to be a few feet away?)

I am sort of limited with space at the moment.

Altec Lansing offers some great values. I have been rocking a speaker and sub set for a couple of years now and it's a good little package.

I doub't you'll be able to find anything better for $30.
