As useful as the Wii's hidden GameCube controller ports and memory card slots are, the console's flip-open panel is an eyesore when left ajar while accessing these backwards compatibility features, especially if you compare it to the system's otherwise sleek design. You have the option of removing the panel, of course, but the resulting black hood doesn't look right either.

Cyber Gadget has come up with an elegant alternative with its replacement lid, allowing you to cover the ports/slots and protect them from dust without having to expose everything whenever you need to just plug in a GameCube pad. The new panel has shutters for each individual controller port which slide back, and both memory card slots have rubber caps that you can peel back without disturbing any of the console's other cavities.

Cyber Gadget is selling its replacement panels only in Japan for 980 yen (approximately $8.70), but we're crossing our fingers that an import shop like Play Asia or NCSX will eventually have them for sale. You can see more photos of the product past the jump.

This is pretty neat, IMO.
I'm one to not really mod any of my consoles in anyway, but this is something I would def consider. The price (if it stays that way if/when it becomes available to us) isn't really too bad. This would be really useful to those who play GCN games quite often on their Wii, and this just makes it look A LOT nicer.

What do YOU think?

as long as it's easy to install i would buy this.

I kinda like it, if they can get the plastic tint to exactly match.

The other question would be, Wavebird compatible? Looking at the plastic curve on mine, doesn't look like it.

I'm so down for one. My drunken douchebag friends broke the top of my Wii =/

What do YOU think?

While I understand the utility of this (I am completely OCD about dust on my consoles/organization/things looking nice and clean), why not just snap off the little doors, since that is basically just as good an alternative, and is also free?

If this comes to the states cheap and matches the system perfectly, I'd consider it. There's no way I'd import it and pay $20 after shipping though.

Ohhh hell no, $20 is WAAAY too much (in total with shipping) for this. This is really awesome (and yes, considering if it fits the Wavebird AND matches the system perfectly) I'd say after shipping this is only worth say...$10-$13. Preferably less but we'll see.

thats a pretty good mod...

hmm what are the chance that Nintendo applies this idea to the upcoming colored versions?

Zero, since there are no upcoming colored versions, since that was a hoax.

No, it was always a hoax. It was never real. Unless you count the prototype systems Nintendo showed off when the Wii was first announced.

Otherwise, Nintendo has never said they'd do other colors for the systems. They have said - in passing - that they'd look into other colors for Wiimotes first, since that would be easier for them to manufacture and control.

If colors do happen, it won't be until sales stall, which could be....well, no one really knows when that will happen.

It seems a bit... over the top? I mean, I really don't care that I have a panel open when I have a GC controller or memory card in my Wii.:-|

Like most of the nifty accessories Japan gets?

Not likely.
