View Full Version : possible glitch Toyrus buy 3 get 2 video games free YMMV details still not determined
wrkh99

Just got back from Toyrus and bought 3 games and got 2 free. This is valid for all video games ! run run run !!
Can a mod add YMMV
****
Guide Added Note:
This deal is an extreme YMMV/Glitch. It has been confirmed by several CAG's, including Sren who is a TRU insider. Other's have had no luck with it.
Please stop threadcrapping, as it is a confirmed, but limited, deal.

I had some giftcards that I need to get rid off and bought 3 360 games that were $59.99 and the manager told me to pick 2 more games cause they were buy 3 get 2 free now untill this weekened . This works on all systems and does not work online at this time .

Umm.. this is no secret:

It's even on the front page of this week's ad.
If you got a 2nd free, it was either a glitch or mistake. If you can, scan or take a pic of your receipt.

I highly doubt this is a "secret" sale.
The ads clearly say buy 3 get a 4th free. Why would they run a "secret" sale to undercut the other sale?
Can you scan your receipt so we can see how they treated the two free games?

Nearest TRU is 40+ miles away; Friday night, holiday weekend - traffic out the ass for a shot in the dark... Gonna have to take a pass on this one, the payoff is not tall enough for a YMMV deal. For the OP and anyone else who scores, awesome, but I'm not making the trek that will take about 3 hours (traffic) and cost around $10 in gas for something less than a sure thing.

If the OP posts the reciept can't someone just price match it at a place like Wal-Mart?
I haven't tried price matching a reciept or tried to price match an actual deal(B2G1 or the like) at Wal-Mart before so I'm not exactly aware of their policies.
Edit: Screw that idea!! I guess Wal-Mart doesn't match deals like that.

Maybe it's not entered into every store's system yet and is meant for this weekend? I'm not sure how these work. Why would OP want to post this if it wasn't true? It's not april fools day. I'm taking what Sren said, as he trustworthy, and calling this a YMMV glitch that is now dead.
While the OP was very vague about the details, it appears it did happen more than once, as Sren (our #2 TRU guy, next to Ben) confirmed.
I'm not going to lock this, but keep the flaming and attacks out of this thread, please. If we get no further confirmation that this is still on within the next hour or so, it'll go to the graveyard.

My store didn't have any announcement of this sale but I had one customer today buy five games and two of them came up free. I'm pretty sure that the five games were all Wii games. He ended up getting the Sonic game ($34.99) and some $30 jewel case game for free. I think the other games he had were all $50 (Galaxy, Pokemon, and one other).
I don't know for sure how to get this deal as he was the only one today that bought five games in my line, but this deal and the OP are legit to some extent.

I know someone who got in on this earlier, I was at work so I couldn't make it in time. It was legit, but I bet definitely YMMV.
Now I gotta add and I'm not going to attack anyone, but the op is a member from 2004 and there are members from 2007 attacking him. I think I'd tend to listen to the guy from 2004 than some 2007 guy who thinks it's cool just to add-on and attack someone for trying to help out a fellow CAGer. And of course none of these so-called members will have the guts to apologize to the OP.

Hmmm... If this ends up still working tomorrow, I may have to plunge and pick up some 360 games.
Any ideas which some good ones would be?
So far I am thinking Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Kane & Lynch, Soldier of Fortune(??) and maybe Smackdown 08(??) or Uncharted (PS3) instead of the one of the last two...
Any other suggestions?

I wonder if the B1G1F on Activision Movie titles is still active in TRU's system? That Might explain the glitch ie buy shrek the third, spiderman and that group of games get one free. So that could trigger a B3g2 free scenario kind of like when amazon had the bluray and hd dvd deal combined with free movies when you bought a player. I haven't been to TRU to check so it is just a guess

Exactly. This has been confirmed by several and debunked by others, so it is a definite YMMV. People are way too quick to jump to conclusions without even reading all of the posts.
As far as this deal goes, the only explanation I can find is the weeklong Buy 3 Get 1 Free deal, and then the weekend doorbuster ad has a Buy 3 Get 1 Free for 7am - Midnight Friday & 6am - Midnight Saturday. There could be these have seperate deal disignations and somehow the overlap is resulting in a glitch.
That's a simple, yet highly unlikely theory.

Thanks for the input...
I had looked at this game a bunch of times and just couldn't decide whether or not to spend the money and buy or even rent... I guess I may just drop some Blockbuster credit and rent it for some Gamerpoints. I will probably pick up Uncharted, not a huge fan of Ratchet series (or most cartoony platforms, i.e. Banjo, Sly Coop, etc).

12-22-2007, 02:33 AM
EDIT: 360 and PS3 games...Preferably 360.
Uncharted is complete awesome, so make that one of them. Assassins Creed is pretty good, but it does get repetitive. Don't know about the rest. Ratchet and Clank is also very good and worth playing.

No offense, but why are so many of you people being such assholes? No reason for flaming somebody who's just trying to help us out. It's obviously a glitch, and if it didn't work for you, I'm sorry, but there's no reason to take it out on the OP.
Some of you really need to grow up. Get in the holiday spirit or something

Easy: Because unfortunately, there isn't any IQ or class requirement for using the internet. Anybody can type in a name and hit the "sign up" button.
Thanks OP for the post. I haven't tried to see if it worked at my Toys "R" Us (I'm even too cheap to pay for 3 games full price, and have a backlog that's 3 digits long), but I do appreciate you trying to help the rest of us.

I went to the TRU near Concord Mills in NC, and saw a couple people taking advantage of the B3G1F, and the clerk never mentioned a B3G2F, so I'd have to say that either they didn't know about it or it wasn't valid at this location.

Maybe because it's a glitch?

It always blows my mind when people drive to a store and ask about a rare system glitch, and then get uptight when Joe Clerk #1 looks at you funny. So many of the clearance runs, price match games, and everything else are outside the "mainstream normal" system for retail... by all rights if the clerks KNEW about this stuff, and were good model employees, then the first thing they'd be obligated to do is forward it up the chain so that the glitch would be fixed!
It's a game to exploit these deals, and it's more fun than some of the crap I've bought lately that was shoveled into a cellophane wrapped case. So you drove around for an hour and found three acne coated teenagers that don't care about your idea. Tough. That's what makes it so much fun the one time in a hundred it actually plays out.

And of course none of these so-called members will have the guts to apologize to the OP.Jonathan, you get a gold star.
There is not secret sale, it's a combination of this weeks sale (last day of sale is today, Saturday Dec 22) buy 3 get 1 free and perhaps their activision buy one get one free, or one of their weekend earlybird door buster bogo type sales.
Post if you have something constructive to add, like what games worked for you for the sale, or what combination of games didn't work. Sp00ge has been patient with y'all who've been thread dumping with NOTHING of worth to add. Especially after he noted that our own Sren has confirmed that it has worked for some customers.
It's a glitch, it's a trap, whatever you care to think of it, it's an oddity that did occur on friday for some reason or combination of reasons. If you hazard TRU today, don't go expecting the buy 3, get 3 to automatically work. If the fluke works in your favor, share the details with us, so we can figure out the factors of the equation.

Agreed! And the smart thing to do while trying to get this would be to just pick 5 games and go purchase. If it don't work take them back. If it does workclean out the store!

Definitely YMMV -- I called four stores in my area and none of them have this B3G2 deal.

Guys, don't post that it didn't work if you DIDN'T ACTUALLY BUY 5 games to test it!
Also, as always, DON'T CALL.
So is this still going on today, is this universal? Reading through the whole thread, I don't see anyone who says it doesn't work who also says they actually tried it, so it sounds like it's NOT YMMV?
I'm at work right now, won't be able to go in until 3pm at the earliest. I really hope it's working still. I'm thinking Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, maybe Fire Emblem...I know there's more stuff. I'd do Mass Effect in a heartbeat, but I think I might wait for the PC version.
EDIT: Whoops, forgot to ask
I rang 2 sales like this today. Both were Buy 3 Get 2 Free Promos. I have no idea how or why but it did work. We tested some different combinations after that and also working was Buy 5 Get 3 Free....I love TRU system glitches....
Do you know if this works cross platform, or only if you're buying 5 games on the same system?
Darn, I wish my Toys R Us had Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness.

They are Veterans for a reason. They are known to find deals pretty well and as for newbie or CAG in Training sometimes repost the same deal or is posting a "deal" which could be one of those "I gave her a $10 and got a $20 back" mistakes. I trust a CAG veteran more then a newbie or a CAG in taining just because they have been around to know what a deal is.
Just my two cents, we all have our opinions.;)

I say instead of going in there and asking...you can be a pain in the ass in the following way.
Get 5 games. When you go to checkout, explain that you just wanted to 'check something'. Keep a talley up in your head about how much the games cost and how much the total should be (IF it works for Buy 3 Get 2). Maybe no one is buying 5 games because the sale is only Buy 3 get 1.
Just try having the cashier ring up 5 games. If it works, then hooray! If it doesn't, well then we have to figure out what exactly the glitch is!

Being around here for a long time does matter. If someone you knew and trusted told you about a deal that seemed to good to be true, it would seem more likely that it was true than if some total stranger were to tell you about the same deal. That's just how it is. People have to earn trust, and seniority is certainly a way to do that.

Alright, Ragekod and prmononoke have well established why CAG VETs are generally more informative and reliable sources of information than the guys who've only just recently joined. If y'all want to debate the merits of seniority vs freshman status, go to the VS Forum to argue it out. No more of that in here.
Now can we please get some solid affirmative information? We know a lot of games aren't ringing up the 3/2 glitch (deal?). We'd like to know what works.

You're right, it was yesteday, and the OP promised to post his receipt by midnight, which was over 15hours ago. You guys don't want to call this deal a fake, then so be it, but I'm hopping off of this boat now, as it looks to be going nowhere fast.

Hey guys, I don't think you need to ask the clerks. If it's a GLITCH, then they probably won't know.
Remember, the sale is B3G1. Maybe just maybe the system scans anything after 3 free? Has there been anyone to get the clerk to actuall SCAN all 5?
Just by reading, it looks like people are just asking the cashiers if this is true.
Traffic is insane around here..but maybe I'll trty getting to my TRU later and getting them to scan 5 games for me to see.

Wrong! Buddy. If you don't see a problem with someone starting a thread to tell everyone to "Run to a store..." to take part in a deal that a "Manager" informed you of, while promising to "post a scan of your receipt, " but never showing up again in that thread; then come with me to Brooklyn because I've got a bridge to sell you.
Noone is crucifying the OP, but it is really frustrating to see a thread swell to almost 10 pages, with one piece of credible information. Especially when its something that can be provided in seconds from those that "Really got the deal"
Simple
1. Which games?
2. Which Systems?
3. Which Toys R'us?
It's not really all that difficult...

People are still arguing about this? Shite...
As Gwen mentioned earlier.. this could be a glitch mixing the Activision + B3G1 deal. Anyone tried that combination yet? TRU (and CC as well) are fairly well known to have lacking ability in putting promo deals into their POS systems...
Now there's no way in hell I'm stepping foot into a TRU before Xmas and listening to the blood curdling, Exorcist-esque sort of screams for brats wanting Power Ranger figures or something. However.. to determine if there's a glitch, try this. Get one of the qualifying games for both deals (such as an Activision game), and scan it at one of the price checkers. Typically, the promos flash on the screen. If it flashes "buy 3, get 1" and "Activision promo" (I'm unsure of the exact name of that promo, I'm using it as an example).. boom, there's your glitch.
In reference to an earlier post in this thread, I guess it kind of does matter how long someone has been a member.. but no so much as their reputation for posting stuff. We have a few insiders here that are 100% accurate in deal posting and basically have the "word taken as spoken gold" status (Benboxer being one of them, Speedy another, etc).. but I do hate the noob piling on effect. We have mods.. a little humor is good, but not attempting to build one's "internet ego" by having a flaming dog pile on someone. However.. the OP is a little suspicious in having the deals posted on SD and FW as well.. but if you're going to be a flame douche, at least be a little funny about it. With 7 pages of redundancy though... it makes it a little difficult to find some facts about anything.

So what's the Activision promo? When does it begin..?
I think it was a by 2 get the 3rd free on Activision games. TRU had it running a few weeks ago. Sounds like some are suggesting that the Activision promo wasn't taken out of the system (or is still legitimately running?) and some may be stacking it on top of the Buy 3 get 1 free.
In other words you buy the initial 3 games, two of them happen to be Activision games. You get the 4th free and then a 5th one free for already selecting 2 Activision games.

Ehh... I didn't really feel like worrying the cashier as he looked too stressed so I ended up getting me 2 PS3 games and 2 DS games for my cousin.
I wanted to check the deal myself, but I remember my days as a cashier and how stressing it was to call over a manager or someone to cancel orders(at my job atleast).

If you were going to buy 4 games anyways why not just take a 5th up there with you and ask them to remove the one from the sale if the promo wasn't in effect?

Well... honestly I don't know. The cashier was rushing me and looked really stressed and all the people behind me were complaining(took ten minutes just to get a guy to the game section) that I just didn't feel like experimenting with a deal like this.
I mean I've done deals before like the whole HD-DVD add-on for $100, but I normally don't go out shopping during the Christmas season(usually due to a lack of funds) so I sort of panicked.

153 replies for a deal that isn't even a reported glitch is a bit much.
Where is the scanned receipt again? I think it's time to delete/lock this thread.

Banjo, Sly Coop, etc).
np. See I loved the games for pc part 1 & 2 great story and they were made I believe by Raven Software. Anyway this one seems like a really budget title but its not a budget title and it seems nothing like the old games. Honestly uncharted is great but hey you may like the new SOF everyones different I would definitally rent it before ya bought it.

I think it's time to read the complete thread. While the OP hasn't presented a receipt, several reputable members here have confirmed this througout the thread. It is a true glitch, but still legit, nonetheless.
The details, as in what the trigger is, is still unkown.

I carry a debit card that I closed in my wallet for this purpose. If I see an unacceptable total I can use that card, and then look at the clerk like it's their fault I can't purchase what they rang up before leaving.

Just an off topic question for some of you...
Do any of you still have to deal with the old style game purchasing at your TRUs???
What I mean is the damn store that still make you take the little ticket, bring it up to the front cashiers, and then pay and then they go and get your game???

No but I kinda wish they did that still. I always got everything I needed back then and didn't have to search hard to find anything. Now the TRU I shop at looks like it was hit by a tornado 2 or 3 times and nothing is in it's proper place unless it's the 32 copies of High School Musical Makin The Cut in the hard plastic anti theft case. Except this time of year the only game in it's proper place is anything on the tiny PSP rack that is away from all the other games.

Lol... That must be a TRU floor plan, because they got High School Musical and other stupid Disney crap in the cases... It is still impossible to find anything, at first it starts in alphabetical order, it goes Armored Core, Assassins' Creed, and then all of a sudden what the Fuck... Tiger Woods 07. Grrrrr.

I'm not sure if you can really call a deal "legit" if less than 10 (give or take) people have gotten it to work. There are WAY more people who can't get it to work than have gotten it to work.
So it may be a glitch, but it is far from "legit."

Still no receipts from any of the people that have allegedly gotten the deal to work nor any indication as to which games they purchased, so it appears that the chances of figuring out what trigger the deal (if it is real) before it ends are about zero.
I really would like to believe that this is true, but the OP and others have not provided many details.

Yes, it's quite aggravating. A receipt scan would be great, but I'm willing to settle with just knowing which games the OP bought. Maybe it's that specific combination that acts as the B3G2 trigger.

Some of the smaller city TRU stores do that (e.g., Newark, Ohio).

Again, YOU DON'T ASK THEM, YOU SCAN FIVE GAMES AND SEE IF IT WORKS. DO NOT ASK EMPLOYEES ABOUT DEALS OF THIS NATURE.

Yeah, I think I like the old way better too, although theoretically the number of tickets might not always match the number of games (but the same problem exists at my store where they have empty fake plastic cases representing some games.
What makes everything 12x harder too is that they don't have any indication that they carry M rated games out on the floor-doing these deals the last few months involves me tracking the games on my Palm so I can figure out what I want. Big pain.
I'm not sure if you can really call a deal "legit" if less than 10 (give or take) people have gotten it to work. There are WAY more people who can't get it to work than have gotten it to work.
I don't think that's right, not that I've gone back through an counted. The *VAST* majority of people who have claimed it doesn't work have either indicated that they just asked someone, or haven't specified what they did. Very few people actually tested it (I can only remember a couple just recently who have).
I'm pretty sure there have been more people reporting it's worked then those who have (legitimately) reported it doesn't, though I may be wrong.

Most under $30 are in the little plastic cases on the floor for you to walk around with, though.
Cookies? What kind?Exactly what I want to know. I did most of my holiday baking already (dropped off treats at my favoritest GS in the world, a GameRush with halfway decent staff, Spaghetti Warehouse (favorite place for my bro and I to go for late lunch), the local FireDepts and the center where I volunteer. I'm close to out. Definately going to make some more chocolate cranberry cookies, fudge and more of the fruitcake cookies I experimented with... oh mah gosh, they came out awesome.
We should have a cookie contest.

Toll House chocolate chip. Mmm. My supermarket had that big ass TUB (the kind you scoop out!!) on sale for $2.50 !!!!
Oooh they were SO good too! I made them extra big too, because, well I can!
I'm not sure if they were good because I timed them right, if because Toll House owns all other cookies...or because I just look awesome in an apron!!!

This is a crazy deal if you get it to work, but seems like when I went they manually made the game free.

LOL! I remember those days. They had the box art in a little plastic sleeve, and you had to flip it up to see the back. But the cashier didn't go get the game. Instead, they stamped your receipt, and you had to go to this little booth in the corner of the store. The guy who was almost always in the booth at my local store was a weirdo, which is why I guess they stuck him in there all day.
Now, in a way, they have returned to that, with the games locked up behind the counter and all.

So old school.....I remember back when SMB 2 and The Adventure of Link were just out for the NES, some asshole would always grab all the tickets to the hottest games. I would have to ask the guy in the game vault to see if they had them. I actually got pretty lucky finding those games in stock even if there were no tickets. SMB 3 was a particularly tough to find the first few weeks. Ahh the memories....

Of course, the store called and wanted it back, and my dad didn't want to mess with a big company like TRU...

Wow, I didn't know any TRUs still had that setup going. The last time I saw that was back in '98 when I bought Metal Gear Solid.
As a kid, I thought that was the craziest thing in the world! A booth in the corner with games stacked up to the ceiling --from my 4' POV-- was like heaven on earth.

Right, moving this to the Deal Graveyard. It was some kind of oddball glitch, we had no solid details and I'm assuming as it's a new week, the sales that made the glitch kick in are over.
Anyone ever wants to post a receipt scan, go for it. It'll satiate our curiosity at least.
