View Full Version : WiiConnect24-Off versus On versus Standby Connection

Wiiconnect24's Standby Connection setting lets the news and weather channels work-but it also leaves the system on all the time (basically) drawing 20 watts all the time and possibly putting wear and tear on the console.
So I'm not using that, but I'm wondering, does just having Wiiconnect24 on at all (even with the standby connection OFF) leave anything extra on when the system is in Standby mode? The only reason I'm leaving it on at all is Everybody Votes channel needs it, for some reason. I have to admit I enjoy that silly channel :D

I'm curious about this myself. I'm not really sure if I should leave it on or not. I could have sworn I heard about some people almost breaking their Wii console due to leaving it on 24/7, but my main worry is my Wii always feels warm when I leave it on (I tend to prefer being careful with my consoles).
Has anyone continued to leave their Wii on WiiConnect24 without issues? Part of the reason I leave it on is because I can see when messages are received. Stupid question, but does messages I get still receive when I'm not running WiiConnect24 all the time (meaning, turn my Wii on and log-in online)? Sorry, I'm not too knowledgeable about it.

Ive heard things can go wrong if you leave standby on. Like getting pixels on your screen and stuff. I always completely shut my wii down to OFF, so the wii connect isnt on. Otherwise the system is always warm if you leave it in standby with the wii connect running. Personally i wish i could remove the weather and news channels since i never use them and are an eyesore.

I switch it on and off. I'll have WiiConnect 24 for a day or two, and then give it a break for a few days. There aren't too many updates that come from Nintendo that it NEEDS to be on every day, but they are sent once and in a while. I guess it depends on how many messages you receive from other friends.

When it's in WiiConnect24 (Yellow) the Wii starts to heat up. It gets MUCH hotter when it's on too. I don't know why. Thus, I just shut mine off. There is no need for it to be on WiiConnect24. When you turn your Wii on, it will automatically update anyway. And plus, updates don't go on everyday. If there's an update, you'll see it on CAG.

I unplug mine when I'm done playing. I had one of those rare batches back at launch that had GPU's melt due to overheating (when leaving this on 24/7). Pretty sure it was only a batch or two around launch that did this. Should be fine to leave it on now.

I just leave mine off. Don't care about the news or weather or getting messages, and I don't use my Wii much as it's my second system mainly just kept around for first party games.
So I see no point in wasting electricity. But I guess it its worthwhile if you use the news/weather a lot etc.

I see, I guess I'll leave it off and maybe turn it on every once in a while. I'm mostly concerned about checking VC games and Wii Ware online (outside of online games when I buy them). Looking at the weather isn't really important to me. I may want to send messages every once in a while (although I already have a PS3/360 to do that also).

You can send messages, and do any of the VC stuff with Wiiconnect24 Standby turned off. Just leave Wiiconnect24 on and turn off Standby Mode.
With messages, only difference is that you won't get the blue flashing light on the console to tell you that you have a new message, and the messages won't show up when you first turn it on but will pop up later after it's been on a while.

I leave the Wiiconnect and Standby options on, but I'm always in the habit of putting the console in Stand-by mode (red light) by holding the power button for a few seconds when turning it off.

I'd recommend leaving it off. I had a launch console and left WiiConnect24 on, and noticed my console stayed fairly hot. I didn't play my Wii all that much since buying a 360 last spring. At the end of October, I noticed the dreaded black pixels on my screen, and had to send the console back for a replacement. Everything went smoothly, but I'll be leaving WiiConnect24 off from now on.

I've got the standby option off, and I guess I'll switch the whole section off just to be on the safe side. Unfortunately I'm probably done with my Wii for a while anyway so I'll just unplug it for now (hated NiGHTs, Zack & Wiki, AND Resident Evil: UC, unfortunately...that'll teach me to rent).

No need to turn Wiiconnect 24 off, that doesn't use any more electric or generate anymore heat. Just the Standby mode does.

Okay, thanks, that's what I wanted to know. Nintendo's terminology is confusing. Even calling it the "Nintendo Wifi connection" is confusing since I don't use Wifi and that really has nothing to do with anything...

WiFi name doesn't bother me, since WiFi is built in and ethernet is not. It's the way the designed it to be used, and the way most people use it. *shrug*
AAAHH!!! It's the apocalypse! TMK has a Mario avatar!

We got our wii on launch day. Did not open and set up until Xmas. It has been turned on or standby 24/7 since then and so far no issues.

I turn off my wii entirely, but I get messages and updates when I turn it on. take yeaterday. I was messaging my freind at midnight, and then I turned it off and went to bed. today, I turn my wii on and get a message saying ''I'm going to bed now''.

Yep, that stuff still works. Only difference is you don't get the flashing blue light on the console telling you you have a message.
That annoys me anyway, since I don't use the Wii that much and would rather just turn it on the next time I want to play to get the message, update etc., not have to turn it on just to get the damn blue light to quit flashing. :D

I leave mine off... it's pretty pointless.

Thanks all! Glad I'm not missing anything having it off-off.
