I'm not talking about the Square crap that they always put out, I'm talking about the types of games that made the PS1 and PS2 so great. When is the Playstation 3 going to get more than just a couple promising looking RPG's? I know White Knight and Disgeae 3, but other than that, it's pretty much nothing but cliched, Square garbage.
Maybe I'm just not up to speed on upcoming games, since I don't own a PS3. Anyone here know of anything promising in the works? I know it's pie in the sky, but I would defecate myself for a PS3 Shadow Hearts or Grandia game.

Too bad I can't find my old posts I made over this in various forums, but here's the situation.
A good RPG takes a very long time to make regardless. While owning a PS1, good RPGs did not start coming out until 1997, when the PS1 at out for almost 3 years in Japan (two years in the U.S.). PS1 didn't start to get flooded with RPGs until 1999.
On PS2, although FFX at least came out within a year, it took over 2 years for PS2 to get a solid collection of RPGs going, and it wasn't flooding with RPGs until 2004 (PS2 came out in early 2000 in Japan and late 2000 in the U.S.).
On PSP, all its good early RPGs were ports (PSP came out in late 2004 in Japan and early 2005 in the U.S.). PSP didn't start getting good original RPGs until this year.
The only way for a console to get a good RPG early on is if it was previously built on another platform and then ported over. Or else, it has to be a low budget RPG with randomized dungeons (or a very old school looking 2D RPG with not a lot to it). I expect PS3 to get off to a slower start in RPGs because.
1. The release date difference between U.S. and Japan was one week, compared to at least 7 months with PS2. An extra 7 months meant Japanese developers had development kits for that extra time.
2. To create an RPG on a next generation console is indeed longer, due to the complexity of next gen consoles. 2009 will be the year IMO PS3 starts to have a decent selection of RPGs.
3. Japanese devs tend to be slow making a transition, like it took a while for many to go from PS1 to PS2 (and we are seeing that same trend again, like with Atlus bringing P4 to PS2).
As much as I love JRPGs, I completely understand they take a while to come (It's a little easier for Wii to get them because some were either built on GC hardware and devs can re-use graphic engines). My PS1 had just a couple of RPGs initially, but in the late years, all I bought were RPGs. PS2 was the same way (had next to no RPGs at the beginning, then after a while I had a ton). PSP was the same way too. GBA was the same way too.
Basically, my advice is if you are a big JRPG fan, it's best to stay one gen behind mostly, because the next generation doesn't get flooded with RPGs until the mid-lifecycle.
This is just my 2 cents though.

That's why I have a collection of PS2 rpgs that will last me till the new systems are $200 or less.

This is just my 2 cents though. That all makes plenty of sense, but I am too damned impatient! I don't really need to see them OUT, but at least an ANNOUNCEMENT would be nice.

I don't really need to see them OUT, but at least an ANNOUNCEMENT would be nice. Most JRPGs (except big budget Square Enix ones) tend to get announced shortly before release (like 3-6 months ahead of time). Part of the reason is that they know when it should be ready and can meet the deadline (because it's really hard to tell when an RPG will be ready). Announcing an RPG too early can be a negative thing a times (like KH II, FFXII especially (when there were a lot of development changes), etc.).
As for right now, I luckily have a backlog of several PS2 RPGs. Since I have a PS3 that can play them, I'll just play them while I wait. :)
