Good mag, though the info is always a bit out of date by the time you get the copy. However, the Post Mortem article is always a must read.

I'm thinking of subscribing to it since I would like to have this occupation later in my life. Are there any other mags like this one?

I don't know of any off the top of my head that deals with the overall industry (art/programming/business/production/etc...).

If you are interested in getting into the industry, I'd highly recommend reading this mag.

If you're seriously intent on pursuing that field its worth getting. Most of the otherpublications worth noting are controlled subscriber lists. This means you need to be able to claim some industry connection or lie believably about it. It's pretty easy to creat a phantom company for this purpose.

Back in the days when I didn't have a legit reason to be at shows like CES or Comdex I had about twenty phantom companies and names so that I could be sure to have badges for friends with more dependable transportation than mine.

I'll have to see if any of them are still in lit pile from E3. There are a lot of game industry trade publications you can pursue but those are focused primarily on the business side and may not be of much use to you if you're focused solely on dev issues.

I'll post later if I turn up anything. In the meantime I'd suggest trying Google searches with the words 'game industry developement trade publications magazines' etc.

I want to know the ins and outs of the whole industry. I wouldn't mind starting my own company if i got the money to do it. I like the business side, the artistic point of view, develoment, programming, etc., basically every facet of the industry. Please post, and thanks for the info.

The site below hasn't been updated for a year but it used to be the wicked gossip site of the game industry. You could gain some insight by scanning the archives.

Starting your own company requires an enormous amount of money or the ability to get a group of people together who'll work for free for some time. Basically you need a publisher to get funding and nobody'll fund someone who isn't proven. So, you at least need a tech demo, which itself requires money.

Also be aware that hours in the industry in general are long and pay isn't very good for the stress and time. Most people start at 40-50k or less and wind up working 60 hours a week, and work for a company an average of only 2 years before being fired or quitting. You have to really really love making games to stick with it. It's also hard to find a job now since there's so many programmers out of work from other fields who are now after gaming jobs.

I got an email from them offering me a free subscription. The link took me to their site, so I filled it out.

Hey guys, I have 2 free subscriptions applications of Game Developer magazine I can send to 2 friends. I'd like to give them to 2 of you guys. Just send me a PM with your name, a title(whatever you want it to be, as long as it has to do with games), and your e-mail and I'll fill your info in it and you should get an e-mail in a day or so allowing you to sign up for a free subscription.

The only way I know of that I got the free subscription is by signing up for www.gamasutra.com, which was free. I just got an e-mail one day and it lead to the GD website, so I signed up and I've gotten 3 or 4 issues and they ask you to renew for free by answering questions.

EDIT: OFFER OVER!
