View Full Version : TRU Sale starting 3/7: BOGO PS/PS2 Value Games
bingbangboom
02-26-2004, 10:43 PM
Starting 3/7 at Toys R Us, all PS2/PS games in the R-Zone value racks will be Buy One get One free. They are underselect skn numbers though so don't try to fool them by saying you got a NFL Street from there.
There are alot of Greatest Hits games in there, so if you are looking to pick up some titles that you have missed, it would be a good opprotinuty. One problem is that boxes are shipped with around 24 games of a select type. They might have PS2 Greatest Hits, Sports, Racing, Family, Action. So it is sort of hard to tell which games are in the box.
Also lately they have been shipping some of the games out of the plastic outer case. So if you see a game $19.99 that has a yellow circle sticker saying R-Zone Value Game that is also included but ask first.

Not a bad deal, considering how many quality Greatest Hits titles there are out there.
Still not quite as good as the buy 2/get 1 free deal from a little while back...because you could get new releases with that one (Crimson Skies, Otogi: Myth of Demons, and Ghost Recon: Island Thunder for $90!).

basically... the ACTUAL games are on the floor... secured... and called value soft.
right? right...
so heres what i have see in those racks at more than one toys r us.
PS2
Metropolismania
Jak and Daxter
Top Gear Dare Devil
Stuntman
Anyone Else? Pulling a blank...
Last time I went to TRU I saw a lot of games with these stickers. For some reason the only one I can remember off hand is...
Disney's PK Out Of The Shadows
Sounds like a good deal though. I'd like to pick up some GH games.

I have seen bunches and bunches of Mad Maestro! there, some marked $19.99, some marked $9.99, at the same store. I was tempted to ask the clerk which she thought was the best "Value", but the censor in my brain worked for once, and I decided it just wasn't worth it. If I can find any of the $9.99 ones when this deal goes into effect, it might be time to finally pick up that game.

No idea on any Buy 2 get third Free deals. Basically I get to see what they want to show. Heck, one of the odd things is that some of the bundle hardware specials that they have with that upcoming ad they don't have the games determined yet. But there will be bundles for all systems with saving $30. I do know that the PS2 one is similar to the current one with Ratchet & Clank and Sly cooper.

What does R-zone mean? Can I order these buy one get one free on ToysRus.com? Are Kingdom Hearts and Xenosaga included in the sale?
bingbangboom
02-28-2004, 11:51 AM
1. R-zone is the name of the Toys R Us Videogame section.
2. No, this is instore only because the games come in mixed boxes.
3. As far as I have seen neither Kingdom Hearts nor Xenosaga have ever been in the Value Software currently.
I think the last time I really remember the sale for B2GTF was during Easter and October... hmmm... Easter is coming? Also last year was the first time that GC & XB games were included in the mix.
SteveMcQ
02-28-2004, 12:02 PM
Yeah, I know they had B2GOF deals in the Spring and Fall. Hopefully there's one coming up sometime soon and it includes all systems.
I cleaned house this past fall before Christmas with it. Ended up with 15 games and 4 Jumbo Simbas and Nalas. That was a great little deal.

Whoa, my b-day is 4-13 as well. I got Def Jam for my birthday as a gift (Gamecube version).
TRU came through again for me. I went to an out of my area one...because I was there. I was like ahhh let me just see what they have. I scored 8 brand new dreamcast controllers at $1.98 each! Perfect for the 2 systems I picked up at Gamestop. Now I just need to find some of those cheap VMU's :)

Just got back from the TRU sale and picked up ape escape 2 & RE for ps2.
I got there right when it opened and was all alone to pick whatever I wanted.
Unfortunately the Cashier was a complete moron and when I went to pay the games rang up at over $40 so I pointed to the large sign on top of the bin that was 4 feet directly in front of him and said that the games were buy one get one free. He then proceeded to call someone and after 20 minutes of discussing they finally gave me my games for $20.
I mean the sign had big red letters saying "buy one get second FREE", but that didn't seem to convince the guy. I guess him watching me pull the games from the bin 4 feet in front of him where the sign was didn't convince him either.

and scrubking that may beat my ToysRUS deal where Arc the Lad was marked $49 and rang up $69, it even had the right numbers on the price sticker, they were all marked like this. and to top it offf while the cashier called the manager he tried to remove the $49 tag.

Just got back from the Peabody, Ma TRU.
I picked up:
Monkey Island 4
VF4 EVO
Soul Reaver 2
Bloody Roar 3
All for $40.
Keep in mind that this sale only applies to PS2/PS1 titles. I saw a few xbox games in the bin, but they weren't discounted at the register.
Other games I saw for PS2:
Kengo
Harvest Moon
Dark Cloud
VF4 Regular
Mojo
Mad Maestro
Stretch Panic
Dave Mira BMX (2 i think)
Kinetica
Metropolismania
EJay Club World
King of Route 66
I'm forgetting alot, but I was there a week ago, and the selection today was MUCH LARGER than it was last week. I checked Sly Cooper/Ratchet and Clank, but they didn't come up as BOGO. BUT! She only pricechecked it, she didn't actually ring it in. The actual pricechecking might have nullified the BOGO, so if anyone wants to pretend to buy the both of them and see what happens, that'd be great.
Also, all of the title had a different UPC sticker over their original ones. Keep that in mind while hunting.

what pisses me off is that most of the PS2 GH titles I would have wanted, like Sly Cooper or Rachet and Clank...or even like Twisted Metal...none of them were part of the deal. the TRU by me didn't even have VF4 Evolution as part of the deal, which I would have wanted to pick up.

YMMV on what is a value title and what isn't. My Pinole, Bay Area, CA TRU had total crap as value titles. No Ape Escape 2, RE2 or Harvest Moon titles that were mentioned earlier. Only things worth noting here was BG: Dark Alliance (still $20), Escape from Monkey Island ($10 for PC in most places) and Virtua Figther 4 (wasn't EVO though)

Ratchet & Clank and Sly Cooper were both included in the BOGO at my TRU. They were in the R-ZONE Value display with the other BOGO games, and they rang up correctly wihout my having to say anything. Picked up one of each, along with Burnout and Hitman 2.

On a side note, don't GGCs for on Memory Cards? After all they are accessories... The cashier couldn't get my GGC to work on it, but I still took it for $20, and now that I think about it, I should have tried to get it for $15, because after all, a Memory Card is an accessory.
I haven't been in a Toys R' Us in a couple weeks, but a couple games in the clearance section not mentioned yet were:
PS2:
Super Bust-A Move 2 - $19.99
PSone:

A star wars multiple disk GH game
Tenchu 1 & 2

and several others of the typical Value Games that always have. The sale is NOT marked--I had to ask someone in the VG dept., and they confirmed the sale is limited to PS1 and PS2 games, ONLY on the Value Rack.

She came back and told me they were Buy One get TWO free and ended up taking off enough money in order to make the deal B1G2.
So I ended up getting $180 worth of games for $60.

First off, I wouldn't allow that at my store. You might be able to get away with it mainly because if you get customer service they don't know about sales.
There are some games that have the value price sticker that are no longer on the rack. Which is sort of odd, but that is how it is. In the in-store handout they list the skn numbers which really do you no good. The game should have a value price sticker on it though. The sales should ring in automatically if it is part of the deal.

I hope you realise that you could have gotten an extra game for free, since it was buy 1 get one free...
Unless it was buy two get one free in your store or something (which is the sale Toys R Us usually has), kinda like with the person claiming that in his store it was buy one get two free...
Anyone rememer when Toys R Us had the buy one get one free sale on regular games? Granted, it was on select games, but they still had a great selection.
I remember getting Midnight Club 2 and NBA Street Vol. 2 a couple weeks after NBA Street Vol. 2 came out, and luckily, you still can't find a better deal than ~$40 new anywhere on these games, not to mention they themselves are very good. Well worth teh $50 I spent on them.

good luck!
EDIT: alphabetized the list for easier reading.
btw, I found all these between the Norwalk and Danbury, CT TRUs.

I went down to my store in Phoenix Arizona and they had tons of Sly Coopers, 1 Ratchet and Clank, 1 Harvest Moon, and many other titles already named, I bought the last Ratchet and Clank and a Sly Cooper. I am thinking of going back down there and picking up some more games.

Just went to my TRU to find Harvest Moon :( It was already gone and I remember seeing so many. So if anyone wanna pick one up for me? :)
Some of the games that I saw that I have not read here posted....
UFC Tapout2
HeadHunter
Route 66
Big Mother Truckers
Some Music Maker Game
Some Sammy fighting game that starts with G
Sliphead
XRGA racing
My Tru didnt know about it either, he said if it was true then he would jump on it. So he said just pick up whatever and see if it rings up.
****Now does anyone know if the first game is a value game does it automatically discount the next game?*** If thats so then I can pick up things like Beyond Good and Evil***

Anyone see Mobile Light Force 2? I thought that one was going for cheap.
That + Seek & Destroy for $10 would be a deal.
Would also be good if Two Towers was a part of this deal.

$19.99, at the TRUs I saw it at. sounds like $10 is a good price for it, given all the positive responses about it in this thread.
is this game really that good?

I got Namco Museum (19.99 has Pacman, etc.) and Resident Evil: CV at the Ann Arbor, MI store.
They had lots of stuff - no Harvest Moon, but plenty of GH games. My purchase didn't ring up correctly (LOTS of the games in the bin didn't have the "special value" sticker!!) and the cashier just said "They're both greatest hits, it doesn't make sense it's not ringing up" and adjusted it by hand.
Moral of the story: Seems like you can get other games (for example, Virtual Fighter 4 Evo) that are greatest hits as long as you tell them you got it from the "special value" area! They'll take one look at all the games not labeled and go "okay..."

that's very employee-dependent, as all the employees at the TRUs I visited knew the Value Zone games arrive in their own plastic casings with different SKU stickers. I actually checked the VZ SKUs vs the normal ones, and they are different. apparently these games arrive at TRUs in these different cases and with the different SKU stickers, so it's no secret which games are in the deal and which ones aren't.
nonetheless, this is certainly worth a shot, but if someone knows better, it's likely you won't get that deal.
EDIT: after reading some of the further posts, I think I meant UPC where I've written SKU above. in any case, the bar codes on the back of the value games are different than the "normal" ones.

My TRU [Cary, NC] didn't have huge selection, but it had a couple copies of Ratchet and Clank that someone above said they haven't seen yet.
Oh, it also had Butt Ugly Martians....
The PS1 games and Ps2 games were in two separate, tough-to-flip-through racks.
I picked up
Devil May Cry
Smuggler's Run
Pac Man World 2
Ratchet and Clank
When Blockbuster wants 6.50 for a rental, ten bucks for almost any game looks like a real bargain.
I specifically saw, in addition to what I bought:
Metropolismanianianaia
Harvest Moon
Spy Hunter
Hitman 2
Pryzm
Mojo
mad Maestro
Kendo [some samurai fighting game?]
Baldur's Gate
HeadHunter
Route 66
Kinetica
Powerpuff Girls: Relish Rampage
Bust-A-Move 2 [I think, it's the one with the baby]
Blood Omen 2
Crazy Taxi
Legaia
Onimusha 2
PK: Out of the Shadows
Project Eden
Savage Skies
Scooby Doo: Night of 100 Frights
The games in the bin were in the PITA translucent plastic case you've got to cut out, and had yellow 'Value Zone' stickers on them, and a UPC sticker stuck on the back of the game. The same game, on the actual shelf, was in the regular hard plastic, they-open-it TRU case, and didn't have that additional UPC sticker or yellow 'Value' sticker.
They may be trying to clear out excess inventory, get down to a certain par level of certain titles in the 'regular' store.

I don't understand something...how are some of you getting the Greatest Hits to be part of the BOGO deal? I found a few where they put the R-Zone value games and they had the new UPC on the back - but no R-Zone sticker, but when I brought them to the counter the guy rang those up at the normal $20. When I asked him, he said that the deal was not GH, but for the "budget" games. I told him that they were part of the lot, but he was like somebody probably just dumped them there and I couldn't get them. They were also about to give me a problem about the number of games I was getting with this deal (other games) and they had to check if there was a limit, which I see there is not.
At another TRU I saw some GH on the rack with the other R-Zone Value games. I hope they don't give me the same problem as the one above.

My 'Value Zone' for PS2 consisted probably 65% of Greatest Hits games. They were packaged and marked clearly differently from the 'regular' GH games, though they appeared to be the same game. Some of them were 'budget' [I assume things like Mojo and Mad Maestro] but most definitely were not.
I thought it was some sort of overstock/overbuy clearance kind of thing, and the actual titles may vary slightly between stores and zones. If they have 1500 copies of GH Devil May Cry, for some reason, and they try to stock 750, maybe they mark 750 as Value to try to move them out and not restock them when they sell out. Just speculatin' here.

I'm second-guessing myself now:
Two questions, and the second depends on the first.
Someone said they wouldn't take them back if that plastic thing was cut, is that true, or YMMV?
Also, if they do take them back [since the game itself is intact and sealed], I'm debating taking back Smuggler's Run for Spy Hunter. Any opinions? I've heard Spy Hunter is short and hard, but I like shooting things, and I'm not really all that great at some of the 'action' games. But I also like non-sim driving games, the kind where you take wide-ass curves and almost flip over and all. I'm going back to TRU anyway to return something else, so any opinions would be nice.

I don't know if this game is included in the BOGO, but it looked like it...I saw WWF Smackdown: Shut Your Mouth in the regular PS2 section at the Canton, OH TRU, but it had a Value Zone Sticker on it and was priced at $19.99. Has anyone seen this game at their TRU Value Zone to confirm?

I saw a few more titles with value zone stickers on them at royal palm beach TRU that I think are misleading, on titles like Shut Your Mouth and Jak and Daxter that were in normal cases and not the cheap looking cases of normal Value Zone games. I tried to buy Jak and Daxter with my other BOGO games, but it wasn't in the system and I didn't push the clerk. He proceeded to grab all the Jak games and started removing the value zone stickers from them. I don't think they're supposed to let you BOGO on anything other than the value zone games that come in those translucent white outer casings, and people who are buying other games with BOGO are just finding friendly customer service representatives.

Well, I just went for the second time 24 hours after going the first time--didn't see anything new, supply hasn't decreased a whole lot.
I didn't see FFX either.
I ended up getting
PacMan World 2
Devil May Cry
harvest moon
Spy Hunter
Ratchet and Clank [yes that's five, they messed up when I went to exchange Smuggler's Run]

On Monday they seemed to have nothing good. I went back Wed and they were stocked up. Today I went back to exchange something and they still had pretty much everything. I know, one day is nothing, but I think not many people know about the deal or perhaps are not just intersted with the selection. Out of 3 TRU I've been to there was one sign and that was facing the wall.
No FFX in sight... if you are looking for a $10 game you can try to find Stretch Panic. I saw two copies, one had a sticker that said $15 and the other didn't. I just picked the one without, but it rang up $10, so YMMV. Otherwise I did get a $10 PS game, Eternal Eyes. I saw a couple of copies at one store and a few more at another. It looks like an anime style RPG that looks interesting.
Another odd thing that I noticed was that some games had a orange TRU sticker that said $10.95 or $21.95(something like that). I don't know how those games would ring up, but I thought that was strange.

Just to clarify about the gift receipts. I bought Monkey Island and Havest Moon with this deal. Havest Moon was the free game which is the game I wanted. Monkey Island was the $19.99 game and I got a seperate gift receipt for both. Tonight I traded Monkey Island (with gift receipt) for store credit which I then bought Beyond Good or Evil. I still have a gift receipt on Havest Moon but I don't think I can use it to get store credit since it will ring up 0. I was wondering if I can do a straight trade in for another game if I wanted.

i went last night, even though i thought it was pretty late in the game to really get any good games. however, i was able to get Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper, and Hot Shots Golf 3. they also had a ton of Harvest Moon, Parappa the Rapper 2, Pac Man World 2, Mojo, Mad Maestro, and other games that didn't really interest me very much. they gave me a hard time about Jak & Daxter, since it wasn't in the computer as part of the deal, even though it had a sticker on it stating otherwise.
this was at the Toys R Us at Gratiot and Masonic in Roseville, MI.
i have a question, by the way. after picking up hot shots golf, i checked it out a little more and am starting to question the purchase. basically, i'm wondering if anyone knows if Toys R Us will give me a hard time if i want to exchange it. if that's the case i'll just keep it, but if they will exchange without a hassle, i'd be into that.

I wasn't going to spend any more $ today because I already bought Hit & Run, GC, I-Ninja, and Whiplash all for $60 and some change. But the cheapass in me gave in and I went to TRU and picked up GT3 a-spec and Silpheed for $20.
I also saw tons of Dave Mirra 2, Seek & Destroy, SSX, Burnout, Blood Omen 2, Silpheed, Gungriffon Blaze, Shadowman, Warriors: Magic the Gathering, Test Drive 3, Mojo, and some others, but they were pretty lame.

They should let you exchange any of the value games for any other value games, at least as long as you have your reciept. The clerk made a point of telling me she wouldn't unless I had a reciept. It's pretty obvious the value games come from TRU with the stickers, and the plastic case, so I'm not sure why they NEED the reciept, but that's what I was told. I've made exchanges twice already, once in Novi, and once in Ann Arbor.
BTW, there are plenty of Harvest moons at TRU in Novi, MI in the West Oaks mall.

I thought I'd bump this thread back to the first page, because this deal is good through March 27th.
I finally made it up to Clackamas, OR TRU. And was *very* happy with what I found:
-Harvest Moon PS2 (yay!!) ~7 left
-Soul Reaver 2 (only one I saw)
-Blood Omen 2 (only one I saw)
-Jak and Daxter (I was lucky to get this) It was on the display table, but it had a yellow value sticker on it so I gave it a shot. The cashier had some trouble ringing it up, but gave me the deal anyway.
I love how the receit says "You saved $39.98"
