View Full Version : Should Microsoft just forget about Asia?

I hear/read at least once a week about a new attempt from Microsoft to do something or create a new game that will hopefully win over the Asian audience. Of course it seems like all those attempts always fail. So I'm wonder, since MS already has a nice following with their 360 in the US and they're building steam in Europe .. would it behoove MS to forget about Japan and just pander to the "anglo" audience? Also, why is it that the Asian market just doesnt seem to take to the Xbox? Is it the games/game style, the hardware, disinterest in online play, or just national pride when it comes to electronics?

Nope. They want Capcom, Square, and Konami (and the like) on board to continue to succeed. Plus, they would surely want to draw in Atlus and other niche publishers to help give them an even more robust library.

it's good that they stay in japan, but I bet if they left it would be imported even more.

yep this is pretty much it in a nutshell. Microsoft was the most robust libary they can put out its what won the console war for Playstation the previous two generations and can help MS pull ahead if they can land themselves in a similar situation so don't expect them to give up on japan/asia anytime soon. Besides many of those developers particularly the ones mentioned in the quote above make games that are very popular here and if you alienate selling your console in their home country their going to stop marketing their games on your system most likely.

Microsoft made an impact on the Indian market with the Xbox. If they are able to get a foothold in India and China, their Xbox division, they may actually be able to turn a profit. As for Japan, I don't think the Xbox 360 will do too well, but a lot can change in one console generation.

Looks like the tide is turning just a small bit. There is hope.

As for market penetration, MS just needs to keep at it and court the Japanese developers to get on board. Plus the hardware needs to improve a bit more on size and reliability.

It took Japan some 20 years to get a car out that was reliable and price competitive. I think the same view needs to be applied to the 360. MS is in this for the longterm. Asia in general is too lucrative a market to cast aside.

microsoft penetrated the american market when sony and nintendo had a CLEAR foothold on market share now its the more popular console in america.. same can happen for the asian market it just takes a little bit more market penetration not giving up (the worse thing M$ can do right now is pull out.. that would make the consumers weary if they decide to return)

getting developers on board helps making quality equipment helps more.. while FPS are more popular in the western hemisphere I would more than imagine that they have to be gaining popularity in the eastern fronts as well.. I mean they did create the Shumup genre.. i don't think its all "they just like RPGs there.." they just want quality games .. just like us.

What MS really should do is invest in some marketing research instead of investing in their current marketing strategy for Japan. But what do I know.

I'm pretty sure the participle modifier goes before the subjunctive clause of the gerund in this case.

You're right, I'm so stupid. I thought Japan = Asia. :???:

I was just highlighting a country of Asia to provide tangibility to the question .. and because Japan is the country of Asia you see associated the most with Microsofts trouble with the 360. I could've easily said Cambodia or something but nobody here or on the gaming blogs seem to give a shit about any other country but Japan.

The funny thing I've played more Japanese games (Ace Combat, Lost Planet, Eternal Sonata, Blue Dragon), and niche games (Wartech, Bullet Witch, Culdcept Saga, upcoming games like Operation Darkness and Spectral Force) than on the other consoles.

If M$ wants to dominate home entertainment like they do PC's(which they probably do) then they probably need asia.

Nah, I'd like summore Japanese RPGs and other Niche games on my 360 to be quite honest. Let them keep trying, and we shall reap the rewards.
