Yeah I was annoyed with having to have the PS3 on to charge too, but I just bought a 7 port USB hub that plugs into the wall. I got too many "accessories" (controllers, headsets, phones...) that are usb that need to charge, so I can just stick 'em all in hub and have them all charge in one location. Cheap too.
I've seen the charges stations at best buy, but they always seem so expensive.

I bought my 60 GB PS3 in September of last year and it has worked perfectly UNTIL I was watching Damages on Blu-Ray and the screen froze. I turned off the PS3, took out the disc and it seemed fine. However, since then the PS3 will not read any disc I put in (I have tried games, BRs, DVDs and PS2 games). I updated to 2.10, reset my system settings, unplugged the console, nothing works...I have sent an e-mail to Sony but has anyone had any similar issues???

I have a similar problem with my 20GB except it seems to just be bluray movies and it would freeze 15 minutes after play. Games worked fine. I ended up just getting a 60GB. I still have to 20GB. I'll probably fiddle with it in a month or so and see if I can get it fixed.
Good luck with your problem.

My wife's cousin had an 80GB do the exact same thing. They were playing Ratchet & Clank, and finished a level, it hung at the "loading" screen. When the restarted it, it refused to recognize CDs, DVDs and Blu-Rays. They called and ordered a coffin, the whole process took roughly 10 days.
This is apparently a VERY common problem. The read mechanism in the PS3 is horrendously complex, and with that complexity comes a high failure rate. I've probably heard of as many failures of the pick-up-head as all other PS3 failures combined.

So you can get a Wii that has no good games, an XBox 360 that has a 30% failure rate or a PS3 that has more errors than...than...I dont know but man that sucks. You should put a dead fish in the coffin...

can't sat i'v had this problem, and mine's a 60gb bought last jan. of 2007 with a lot of use on it. the only problem i'v heard of on the ps3 is the yellow load hang up light, and that's sopposed to be rare. I'd call sony directly and find out what they have to say
The Mana Knight

The problem is quite common at the PS3 forums. Every week, I see at least 3-4 threads over a PS3 console no longer reading discs (but then again, it's the biggest PS3 fan site and has tons of members). Most of them are 60GB consoles, since many of them have an older blu-ray disc diode (I believe manufacturing of 60GB consoles ended in March 2007). I've heard it happen to some 40GB/80GB consoles, but very rarely (Have only heard a few 20GB consoles not work, but there aren't many out there). I thought I heard of Sony extending warranties who had disc reading problems for some (this was back in January though). Be sure you still have your receipt.
One person who had a PS3 from another region and wouldn't be able to send it away, so he took an ear tip and some rubbing alcohol, cleaned the laser, and the games worked again. Two issues I'm hearing are PS3 consoles getting too dusty inside (causing disc reading problems due to the laser not being strong enough or something), or the laser gets stuck and needs to be adjusted.
Not being able to read disc is the most common PS3 issues, followed by only making three beeps, yellow light of death (hardware failure), and every once in a while a HDD problem.
So you can get a Wii that has no good games, an XBox 360 that has a 30% failure rate or a PS3 that has more errors than...than...I dont know but man that sucks. You should put a dead fish in the coffin...All next gen consoles have problems. There were issues with some Wii consoles getting an error (mine has) and early consoles with Wii Connect 24. It's true there are many different errors with PS3, but the failure rate still seems to be no higher than 5% thankfully (from what I gather).
But I will say, the easy way to kill a PS3 is by Folding@Home too much. The majority of people I know who had PS3 problems (mostly with no longer turning on or HDD failure) have come from Folding too much (to a point the console got too much wear and tear).

I have a 60gig, and I haven't had any problems playing games (ps3 or ps2) or watching dvds, but on some blu-rays I get this 3 second skip every so often. I read up on the forums about it and apparently it was an issue that was supposed to get fixed by a past firmware update. I have the latest firmware though so I have no idea what to do next.
The Mana Knight
03-06-2008, 10:21 PM
Problems with an occasional skip are probably related to firmware. Originally, Sony would release a new update fixing these issues within two weeks (they'd be update 1.92, 1.93, etc. as an example), but due to many people complaining about having too many firmware updates (even just minor bug fixes), they have now chosen to push fixes and small updates within one update every once in a while.

I have a 40 gig and it suffered a broken disc drive (wouldn't load ANY disc, wouldn't even spin). Sony had me send the entire system back and they sent me an entire new 40 gig, still had the a seal on the replacement retail box! I haven't had any similar problems since.
Call Sony and explain what problems you are having.
Best.

Those were also fairly common problems with the PS2 last gen too and cleaning the laser with a q-tip with rubbing alcohol was a common fix for when the systems wouldn't read discs. Unfortunately, it was sometimes the motor that spins the discs which failed and that was a whole different beast altogether.
Hi I just bought a 40gb PS3 and now I am trying to install a WD2500BEVSRTL 250GB/SATA hard drive. I read the manual, used google and watch some vids on youtube but I can't get my ps3 to read the harddrive.

I did that but now it got

Insert storage media that contains update data of version 2.20 or later, and press the START and SELECT button at the same time.
I'm stomped. I think I am going to exchange the HD and see if that works. If not im going to return the PS3 and just wait for the MGS bundle.

Did you actually format the hard drive on your friend's system?
If so, it could be because he had firmware 2.20 and it installed some system files to the drive. It shouldn't be asking you to update your firmware just to install a hard drive.
I would recommend either trying to format the drive with a PC or putting your 40 gig drive back in and installing the update online and not from a cd.

You need to format first before updating. I don't know why you're trying to update when the hard drive isn't formatted yet.
Put the drive in your PS3, tell the PS3 to format it, then try updating.
If you for some reason can't format it, put your 40GB back in, connect to the internet and do the automatic update.

Could you just not fuck around with shit?
Honestly, I was thinking that there should eventually be a comprehensive FAQ thread similar to Strell's in the Wii forum; but it should be made by someone who actually cares enough to edit it (like TMK). The PS3 username thread should be restuck without question. I'd also like to see my firmware updates thread back up until there's a chance to integrate it into a comprehensive general thread. With it buried like it is now, people will just make more clutter threads every time a firmware update appears. I spent a fair amount of time making and editing that thread and I don't want to see that happen.

But the link to my thread isn't in the OP. That's really not the problem though; the system updates thread doesn't get daily activity, so it will inevitably get buried. Rather than having to dig it up whenever there is an update, why not leave it stickied? You've eliminated what, 2-3 stickied threads? Congratulations, my index finger will thank you for the half-a-millisecond less of scrolling it has to do. I just don't understand the point of having to click through twice just to find a topic. We know that most users won't even bother to check this thread and we'll have more pointless threads being made. If you're going to de-list a bunch of threads, why not de-list them all while you're at it? It will all serve the same purpose under your reasoning.

So I'm trying to set up a media server on my ps3 with the hope that I may be able to remote play from my PSP and watch stuff wirelessly within the house.
I've got the Media Server stuff set up, gone into WMP11, enabled library, added my folders and video files and such. The PS3 recognizes all of this and I can see all my video files with preview pictures from the video file. However, when I try to play them on the PS3, a huge majority of my video files come up with the error "Unsupported data." Anybody know why that is? They are mostly divx files I believe, and even if they aren't, the PS3 seems to be able to pick out a preview image of the video file for when I'm scrolling through my folder. Out of a dozen or so video files (I have many more in my folder, I just checked a few to test things out), maybe one or two of them will work. I thought it'd probably be an incompatible video codec thing, but here's the weird thing; When I go to check the details on the files from within the PS3, all of them come up as blank for the video codec (it shows as a dash to signify nothing), even for the video files that work.
Anybody know what's up with this? Are my video files not divx after all? Would I have to convert every single file to be ps3 compatible...? Cuz shoot...that would not be very cool at all :\

I'm having sort of the same problem. I usually hook up my external hard drive w/FAT partition to play video files, never had a problem once the divx compatability came through. Currently, I've been downloading series from a torrent KKM (anime), I've got a mess of .avi files, all divx encoded from the same subber, and it's about half and half which ones my PS3 plays. Even converting the unplayables ones to mpg4 didn't work.
I don't want to say anything, but it started about the same time as the last system update...
Anyone else having a problem with divx files?

There are still some flaws with it, because only a few games are listed in it (there are some games which aren't fully integrated in it, partially because of mis-communication between the one handling the game. I am trying to get it more organized (It's definitely a lot better than it use to be).

Instead of index threads (which, in my opinion, are pointless unless they are used as "HEY NEWBIE! LOOK HERE FIRST!" threads, since now it's more difficult, or at least easier to miss a new post, for those of us who liked to check the threads like the PS3 101 thread for new posts that we could help with) perhaps things like CAG clan/groups should have their own sub-forum.

There's no bluetooth guitar because third parties currently don't have special access to the PS3 bluetooth. There was an article about it once:
All of us PS3 owners know that our sexy console sports Bluetooth technology -- real awesome stuff, being able to attempt to play Warhawk while cooking in the kitchen and the TV is upstairs in a bedroom. Anyway, Red Octane doesn't seem to think Bluetooth is all it's cracked up to be. It's been revealed that the PS3 version of Guitar Hero 3 will force PS3 owners to attach a wireless USB dongle to their consoles instead of using the Bluetooth technology. Well, that might not be true. Red Octane is blaming Sony for this USB device. Let's investigate!
1UP contacted Red Octane for comment and they replied: "Our products require considerable time for certification and testing to perfect both our software & hardware, so this was the most effective way for us to bring a high quality wireless solution for PS3 this holiday." Since that didn't adequately answer why, they pried further, since the Wii uses Bluetooth but won't require such a crazy USB device. Apparently the Bluetooth technology only works with the Sixaxis and Sony doesn't have the technology set up to allow third-parties to use it. That's a little strange sounding.
Sony gave vague answers, using the word consider many, many times: "Many factors were in play regarding the decision to go USB wireless vs Bluetooth for GH3. However, we are considering Bluetooth for future consideration." Everything else is classified! This is a minor issue, but speculation seems to surround the PS3's strange de-sync with the Sixaxis. Surely that would be a horrifying situation while strumming your axe, so perhaps Red Octane decided not to risk that problem on the PS3. Who knows. Does anyone really care? Wireless is wireless, right?http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/10/11/why-is-red-octane-giving-ps3-a-wireless-dongle/

At least yours works somewhat.
My linksys wireless just boots me off and shuts down my entire router (needs a hard reset). Some sort of problem with the WRT54G that Sony/Linksys still havent addressed.
I had to turn off the ability to connect/recognize wireless networks.

I'm a bit skeptical about that... The guitars have a PS button and they work just like controllers at the XMB, right? I'm willing to bet bluetooth is just more expensive, and they'd probably have to include internal rechargeable batteries.

Good idea Link, but I think with how many different pool threads there are (I just clicked through to another repository, then to yet another one), it would probably be a better idea to have some of this information stored in a wiki.
The wife okayed buying a PS3, so I'm hunting for a used 60GB model around Atlanta. Unfortunately, the closest one at a GS is in Dalton, 60 miles away. I've found a 20GB much closer.
The real question is, is wireless really worth the extra $70 and 120 miles worth of gas? My 360 isn't wireless either, and unless I get that adapter for free, it's probably not going to be.
I figure I could set up a wireless bridge. It would be the same amount as the difference in price, but would cover the Xbox, 360 and PS3. Thoughts?
Oh yeah: saw MLB 08 in action at MicroCenter, that's my first game.

How do you set games to output from the PS3 to a HDTV in 1080p?

Mostly that was for the earlier games right? I'm pretty sure they've changed things so that you can upscale regardless of what the developer set the game to default display in.
snowsquirrel
04-09-2008, 11:59 AM
It is game dependent. If a game says 720p only, that means 480p, and 720p. If your TV can scale 720p to 1080p, fine. But the PS3 does not do scaling like the 360, so it can only display what developer explicitly supported. The developer can do scaling, if they like, but if they don't, the PS3 can't do that for them.

I'm pretty sure they've changed things so that you can upscale regardless of what the developer set the game to default display in.Nope, there are still games that are 720p only. Devil May Cry 4 is one of them. Burnout Paradise is that way too but receiving an update to support 1080i. The situation is the PS3 has a hardware scaler, but in order to enable it, it does suck up some memory. And due to the PS3 having kind of limited memory (most devs don't try streaming PS3 memory like they should), it gets left out.

So, what's the difference between this and the PS3 101 thread? I always used that as the general PS3 question thread? Or do we have two PS3 101 threads now?

I have Uncharted, Resistance, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Folklore and don't really care for much else.
I'm trying to trade for Ratchet & Clank here, but that's really the only game left.
GTA4 is coming out soon. Aside from that, what can I really buy?
GT5 Prologue is a big maybe. But I don't feel too comfortable paying $40 for a demo. I know it's a very extensive demo, but seriously the car line-up is comparable to Need for Speed on PS1.
I figure, I have a PS3, a beautiful Samsung LCD, a surround sound. I should stock up on Blurays and supplies and hide in a bunker until MGS4 comes out?

Haze comes out May 20th, Dark Sector is a decent game. If you have friends over often, try Rock Band.
Don't think just in terms of exclusives because of a lot of the later multiplatform titles work just fine on the PS3.
From EB games it looks like Brothers in Arms may or may not come out on June 3rd.
By then there should also be some new stuff on the new PSN store.

My brother and I saw this steel (painted green) MGS4 PS3 on Kotaku (long before April 1)... not sure what's the deal with it but is that going to be available to the general public (in the US)?

I'm told Uncharted it pretty good so you should pull down the demo, the same with Ratchet and Clank. Depending on your model, I can't suggest the MGS: Essential Collection enough (even though the second disk of Subsistance is missing).

Ok, I bought Warhawk off of the PS store and have to admit that I do regret buying it as downloadable content. At first I enjoyed the game, but after a little time with it, well its not my type of game and I wasn't really having any fun with it. And I haven't played it since about a week after I initially got it.
So for his birthday my cousin got a PS3. The first games he wanted to get was Warhawk and cod4. He is not online yet, he needs to get a wifi router, so he has no psn account. So I offered to just give him mine, which has warhawk on it already. I thought it was a fair trade considering he is giving me his 20gb 360 HD, since he got a 120gb elite and sold his non hdmi 360. He really wants to do it, obviously, free game...
So should I? I feel like its a waste just sitting on my PS3, warhawk that is. And I don't have a multitude of friends on PSN anyways so I would just re-add them on my new account.

If he doesn't have a router how would he download the content onto his PS3? If he is your cousin I doubt he is going to try anything with your info so there isn't really a reason not to give it to him.

I'll know when he'll be online, since I gotta set it up for him. There's nothing he really can do with my account. I would just add all of my friends onto my new account and delete all of my stuff from my old one and he can just use that one as if he made it, but with warhawk on it. I don't know though, than I gotta pick a new name, I like this one, and thats always a bitch since every option I try is already picked, I might just buy it for him for his b-day so i can keep my account, and maybe I'll play warhawk a bit later on when its all in home and stuff. I don't know, if he still really wants to do it, I'll see.

Hey guys,
I have set up two media servers:
Windows Media
TVersity
I read on some forums the TVersity website that TVersity was really good and I hoped that it would fix my problem. I have been buying DVD's and Blu-Ray's with the free digital copy thinking I could stream them. So far I have installed Hitman and Justice League with no problem. Though, when I try to stream them to my PS3 thru Windows media server I get "Unsupported Data" and when I try to stream it thru Tversity I get a message saying the file is not there. On the computer when I try to play it (on TVersity) it says I may need to install a flash player, though I have no idea how to do that or if thats the problem. Now the only thing that is weird about this is that I can stream both movies thru to my 360 by Windows Media Server. I have also succesfully been able to stream adult content :whee: (it's not mine its my wife's) thru TVersity and it worked great. If anyone can help me so I can get Juno streaming for my wife I would be very happy (I only have one 360 and two PS3's, my wife is living in our room now with our new baby and only has access to a PS3 and I am trying to make access easier for her). Please any help would be great, I have everything up and running and I even edited the Tversity program in notepad from "MPEG16" to "MPEG2".

I'm tired of waiting 2 hours to dowload a demo that's barely 1 gig, when on the 360 I can download a 1 gig demo in less than 15 mins. I've tried wireless and wired connection, and they both are about the same. The MGO Beta has been less than 25% for the past hour and a half...I'm tired of this shit. Is there a way I can configure my router to open up more ports or allow more access to the PSN so that I can download faster? How do people download in like 15 mins on the PS Store?
I'm in San Diego, CA with RoadRunner internet, so I know that's not a problem...

Nope, I had a launch PS3 that I swapped out with another 60 gb in August and it's the same speed.
When I have it connected with the charging cord it works fine. But when I try it when it's wireless, it only just blinks all lights fast. Any suggestions?

I also posted this in the New Users Guide since I didn't see this one to begin with but here is my issue.
Question for anyone who might be able to help.
I have a 60gb PS3. Tonight I was using the browser to check some score before playing a few games and the system froze on me. Since that time, I have not been able to play ps2 games on my machine. Last night I was playing Odin's Sphere and Shadow Heart with no problems. Now, neither of them will play and I just get a black screen when I try to play. I never even get to the PlayStation 2 logo coming up.
I have tested all other forms of media on the machine, PS3 Games, Blu-Ray, DVD, Cd ... and they all play fine. PS2 Games simply will not play at all.
I have tried doing a default setting restore and that did nothing to help. It still will not ready those games or any other ps2 game I tried. Any help would be appreciated.

Is there anyway to enable a bluetooth headset once you are in a multi player GTA 4 game? A friend and I were playing Resistance and our headsets were working fine, then we quit the game put in GTA 4 and we kept getting a message that we couldn't call each other because our headsets weren't connected. After looking and looking we couldn't find any option we had to quit the game and go enable our headsets from the PS3's main menu. This wouldn't be all that bad, except that when we get disconnected from a multi player game or it just fails to start our headsets go out as well.
Is there anyway to reconnect our Bluetooth headsets while playing GTA 4? Or do we have to quit out of the game each time it disconnects us? If it matters we both are using the Jabra BT125.

Occasionally my headset will "disconnect" in Warhawk. Pushing the button on the side of it usually connects it again.

05-03-2008, 03:00 AM
Yeah, the PS3 seems to handle voice chat like an incoming call. So if you have it paired, try hitting the Speak/Answer Call button on your headset.
However, there's a general bug either in the PS3 bluetooth setup or the GTA4 code (or both) where bluetooth devices will get partially desynced, and while you'll be able to connect to it and it'll say it's connected, no voice will transmit through. Probably has something to do with individual bluetooth headsets though.

I took a photograph that shows this perfectly, but I see I cannot add attachments. (why can't I add attachments?) I will do my best to describe the way I keep my PS3.
The PS3 is kept horiontally with the ends resting on top of two thick books. I have roughly a three inch gap between the bottom of the PS3 and the floor. Next to the PS3 I keep a medium-size bedroom fan blowing across the system.
Is this a safe way to ensure my PS3 does not overheat? Is this even necessary? After playing the system the first time in my opened entertainment cabinet I felt the system and was suprised at how hot it became.
whoknows
05-05-2008, 07:10 PM
The PS3 will get hot, it's normal. One thing is to listen to the fans on the system, if they're noticeably loud then the system needs more room.
mtxbass1
05-05-2008, 07:18 PM

Mechafenris

I've never had an issue with heating (or the fans going like crazy) on my 20GB PS3... and I keep it vertical alongside my other consoles (I'm starved for room, to be honest. heh)
It's never given me a lick of trouble since I bought it... heat or otherwise. So I think you can safely set it on its little feet and still be fine.
scsg75
05-05-2008, 08:06 PM
the bigger issue here is your balancing it on books, setting yourself up for a scratched disc or even breaking the system itself if it ever gets bumped while its on and falls off the book perch.
There's really no need for special fans blowing on it and balancing it on books so the bottom is elevated. It's not a nuclear reactor. It will get warm, but so does everything that's electronic. It has it's own internal fan for cooling it down and there's no vents on the very bottom where it rests when horizontal, so I'm not sure what the deal is with balancing it on books.
imascrub
05-05-2008, 08:34 PM
um....that's going a bit overboard i think lol.
The PS3 is apparently capable of surviving in a sauna (forgot where I read this. Done for testing's sake) so I doubt it will overheat naturally. I just have mine on my desk horizontally, no fans, no anything. The right side vent shoots right into my speaker, the rear vent blows towards my window which is closed about 90% of the time right now. The air that gets blown out is warm-hot and nowhere near meltdown temperatures.

I have my PS3 here at college with 1 HDMI cable connected to my HDTV. At home, we have a 46" HDTV with a 5.1 surround sound system. When I get home I want to make sure I know what I need to play the PS3 with the surround sound.
As of now, the surround sound is connected to the central unit, which is a DVD player. This has a HDMI output I believe, which goes to the TV in one of the 3 HDMI inputs and also goes to the cable box through AV cables so that cable gets surround sound.
I'm not sure how I would hook up the PS3 to this system to get it to work in surround sound, is anyone sure? I could link you the two items if wanted to find out for sure.

According to amazon it has an optical input, according to the first review on amazon it does not.
If it does have optical in you simply get an optical cable from firefold or monoprice, connect the two and configure the ps3 to output audio over that.

You're not going to get true 5.1 from your PS3 on that stereo. You can use the normal rca stereo jacks (red white ones) to get stereo sound but that's about it. The receiver does have an hdmi port but that is for output on the built in dvd player not a/v input.

If you mean the noise when you navigate the XMB (I don't use themes so I don't know if there are any other sounds), you can turn it off under "Settings >> Sound Settings >> Key Tones".

With the "Disc auto play" setting turned on, is there a way to start the PS3 without loading the disc that time?
My family uses the PS3 as a movie player, so to keep things simple I turned on auto play so that any time they put in a disc it would play it immediately. However sometimes I just want to go to the XMB even though there's a disc inside.
I was hoping doing something like keeping the PS button held down turing startup would help, but no dice.

I need help. I just moved home from college and my PS3 is connected via HDMI to the TV I have here:
http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/samsung-ln-t4665f/4507-6482_7-32306311.html
It worked no problem on my 20inch 1080p HDTV at school, but now I have strange problem on this TV. Audio works fine, but the picture flickers and is hard to explain, but every few seconds/minutes the picture will flicker and a mirror image will be placed on the screen somewhere. Basically, it's bein fucked up. I can't tell if it is the HDMI connection and have no other way to test that, or anything else.
Can anyone help me?

Hi;
yesterday I install a PS3 on my 1080i TV with a HDMI cable. When I turn on the TV and the PS3 the only thing I see is statics. I really frek out. but then when I pres "X" on the control the game stars everuything goes normal and I can play the game. So I conclude that, for any reason I can not see only the meny of the PS3 (the one that appears with out a game).
I think it something with the set-up. I havent connect the RCA cables yet. I would like to see it only on HDMI.
have anyone have any idea?

Everywhere I look I only see 40GB versions of a new PS3. Is there any official word of more releases? I want to use my stimulus check to buy a PS3, but don't want to buy the 40GB and then have a better version released a month later.
Thanks in advance for any info.
I'm surprised no one has answered this. As for right now, there is only the 40 GB model on the market (why, I don't know). If you want an 80GB, wait for the MGS4 bundle, I believe it'll be out on 6-12 and is one I would definitely recommend waiting for.

While the system is off, try holding down the power button for about 5 seconds...make sure its only plugged in via HDMI if you want HDMI, or RCA if you want RCA.

I need your guys opinions, I want a PS3, and if I could get myself a summer job I might be able to snag one by the end of June (got an interview at a k-mart tomorrow). Anyway my question to you guys is lets say I could afford one in June, do you think it would be a good idea to get it in June or wait until e3 in July to pick one up to see if there is any new models? I would only be getting GTA IV with it to start, because that will keep me busy for awhile and it would be probably the only game I could afford with it.

Either get the MSG4 80GB bundle, or use your new job skills to search for a 60GB in the system...then use your discount, if possible.

For the easy way, a full system backup should save everything.
If he can't do that, he could just make a new ps3 user id (not psn, the user id that is all the way to the left of the XMB), then sign into his PSN account. Any PSN purchases should be able to be redownloaded.

I don't understand the first method (the easy way). You mean just back up everything to some storage device (USB drive, memory stick) and then copy it to the new system?
For the 2nd way, should he first delete everything on the old PS3 before creating a new user ID and logging into his PSN ID and re-downloading everything?
He's got some downloaded PS1 games and also saves from PS1/PS2/PS3 games too, if those are treated differently.

Theres an option in the Setting menu, I believe it's "System Setting >> Backup Utility". It backs up everything (including demos/videos/music/pictures/virtual memory cards/saves/etc so he may want to delete any demos/videos/etc that he doesn't need to save space, if he doesn't have a USB hard drive) to flash drive/memory card/usb hard drive.
Then there's a option that will restore a backup to the system.

He doesn't really have to delete anything off the old PS3. In fact, if he leaves his old PS3 id on it you should be able to play any PSN or PS1 downloaded games he has. I've never done gamesharing but that's basically how it works.
I think it's possible, but I've never backed up saves/virtual memory cards without doing a full system backup.

It's funny since i'm in the similar shoe... Anyhow, i totally get the backup and restore thing. However, it would be interesting to know what will happen if you're trying to restore a backup from a 60gb to a 40gb PS3 (provided that the backup from the 60gb is about 50gb used).
Anyhow, two more questions... #1 What happens if you pull out the installed hdd (40/60/80gb) in the PS3 and put a brand new 2.5" hdd (assuming it's formatted, but not necessarily have any PS3 system files)? Will the PS3 boot up at all? If yes, then i believe you can just use the restore function and solve the problem instantly (the backed up data is on an external hdd)...
#2, if the new hdd fails to boot the PS3, how do i get it to boot? The problem is that 2.5" hdd can't be hooked up via usb w/o getting some of that usb converter kits (around $20, basically converting the 2.5" hdd to an external hdd).
thanks in advance!

In your case, that's the simplest thing to do... Worse case scenario, just need to reconfigure the wireless setup again (i.e. type in the access code, which is not a biggie, unless you got a long ass code).

It will format the hdd if it's not. #2 since it will boot with the new hdd, you can restore the backed up data from the external hdd. Case closed? I hope so, since that's what i'm gonna do to upgrade the gunmetal PS3's hdd.

Errr, here's a PS3 question probably never have been asked before...
Does the PS3 memory card adapter work both ways? That is, allow you copy the game saves from a PS2 memory to the PS3's virtual memory card and from PS3's virtual memory card (of the PS2 game saves) back to the PS2's memory card?
Well, i'm one of the few actually going backward, i.e. getting a PS3 before the PS2. If the gunmetal PS3 has limited BWC like the 80gb, then i probably don't need to get a PS2, but it's not... And i might be selling my 60gb PS3 if all upgrades are good for the gunmetal PS3 (a lot of work if you ask me, but it's gunmetal :))

The LE PS3 is only a 40GB, which doesn't have any PS2 BC at all, so if you're looking for BC, keep an eye out for the 80GB that comes with MGS4 packed in, which will play most PS2 games, when the game comes on in a few weeks.

Hi All,
First, I am not a gamer so please don't behead me in your midst, LOL.
I do already have a PS3 for Blu-Ray functionality, but I have the following question:
I am purple, but would like to be able to play Region B Blus as well, without shelling out $1000 for a multi-region BD player.
1) Can anyone provide definitive answers on if the UK PS3 will work with US power supply (or do I need some kind of converter?).
I know many BD are region free according to several websites such as releaselists.com (has link on bottom left to region code info), but I've found there are always those, where info is not available in time, and they won't be released in the US at all, or not until the next year.
2) Also, will it work with my TV (42 or 50" Panasonic Plasma)-or is this not an issue.
I am aware that some stores have geographical shipping restrictions, but I want to research the info in case this is possible.
I also realize that this has probably been asked a million times-so if there are other threads or links I should be referring to, please point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance for your assistance!http://images.dvdtalk.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

When the PS Store was web-based, I was able to use my credit card to make exact payments for stuff I bought. I can't figure out how to do this in the new store -- it only allows me to add $5, $20, etc. amounts. Did Sony make it impossible to pay exactly the amount of your cart? That would just suck!

Ok, I am about to buy a ps3 but I am having trouble deciding which model to get. It would be great if some of you guys could provide some input.
I have two choices:
1. 40gb $399.99+tax plus $100 walmart gift card
2. 80gb MGS bundle $499.99(no tax amazon)
From that the 40gb looks like the better value, but I really hate to get a console that is missing features.
I still own my ps2 and still play games on it. How well does the 80gb backwards compatibility work and does the upscaling make playing ps2 games on the ps3 worth it?
Are the 2 extra USB ports in the 80gb model ever neccesary? (IE: are there any situations in which you need more than two usb ports?)
Is the lack of a flash card reader and SACD support ever a problem ever in the 40gb? (What is SACD?)
I have also considered attempting to get the $100.00 walmart gift card with the MGS bundle.
Anyway, I'm really having trouble making a decision, Anybody got any input?
Edit: Never mind, I'll just get the 80gb with the giftcard now that it is included.

Is there an accessory that allows PS2 controllers to be played on the PS3, and if so, how is the performance? I have 2 of the Street Fighter 2 special edition controllers with the 6 button layout on the front like the arcade cabinets/Genesis/Saturn controllers specifically designed for fighting games and if there's not an adapter that will work I might as well sell the controllers.

I am going to bite on the wal-mart PS3 deal happening this week. I am going to get GTA4 of course, but I don't know what game I should also get. I was leaning towards COD4 or Orange Box. I do want to play other people online, so a game that has alot of people still playing it would be awesome :D. I was also thinking of warhawk, but is it still playable without the BT headset?

COD4 and Warhawk are excellent choices if you're into playing shooters online, and we have CAG nights that you can participate in if you happen to get either of those games. :D
Warhawk IS playable without the headset, though you won't be able to communicate with anyone without one. It's worth having it IMHO, especially for COD4 or other online games.

Never got into the R&C games, so no on that one :P. This is going to be my first sony console(home console, I've owned a PSP for a couple years now).. I was always a big N freak(<3 the Wii). I just want something with more online play, since right now my computer can't handle any decent FPS game. My laptop died that was able to play games(I let it go abit too long without replacing the fan that died, GPU fried :x), so I built a cheapo machine now to just surf the net and chat. I would buy a good video card and such, but I haven't gotten hardcore into consoles in years, and I think its time I get back into them. Now to get back on topic.. I usually work afternoons(3pm-11pm CST is my usual shift during the week) and stay up til around 5-6am then sleep. I am wondering though what games have active players during the late hours at night.

^^^ To answer your question... in my experience, I've always found it easy to find people playing online, even during the late night hours, though obviously there won't be as much people playing as during the day. There's still a good amount of people that stay up to play online.
Anyhow, you can easily find games online in both COD4 and Warhawk since they're both very popular on the PS3. You can't go wrong with whatever game you choose, both are excellent. ;)

To be honest, I think you're better off getting the PC version of TOB because it just runs better. There's lots of annoying loading times, especially when you die in Portal... it can take up to ten seconds of loading just for you to respawn, and if you've never played Portal, it will get frustrating quite fast. TF2, never touched it, so I can't say. PC version loading times aren't near as long as that of the PS3 version. I think that goes for TF2 as well, but I've only played with it online once... I sold it almost as soon as I played with it. :P
UT3, it's fun and all online though I haven't played it in months and I've never really touched the main storyline, so I couldn't tell you anything about that. A bit laggy at times, though it's generally minor most of the time. There's a CAG night for UT3 as well. ;)

Like everyone else, I'm getting a PS3 in a few weeks for MGS4. Anyway, I have a few questions.
1. Is the Sony PS3 remote the best for the price? Or is there a third party remote that I'd be better off getting instead? I intend to use the PS3 my DVD player as well as my Bluray player.
2. Regarding the Memory Adapter, is it worth the $13.00? If I've read correctly, you only need to use it once and then it transfers your saves from your memory cards onto the PS3 and creates basically virtual memory cards making the device and memory cards a bit useless then. I figure perhaps a kind CAG would let me borrow it and I can send it back, or just get my friend who is getting a PS3 to get it.
3. Exclusives. What PS3 exclusives am I missing out on? I'm getting MGS4, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, as well as Eye of Judgment. Anything else?
4. Is the HDMI connection on the PS3 proprietary? Or can I just order a cheap one off MonoPrice and be good to go?

Could also wait a couple weeks and grab MGS4. Doesn't that come with metal gear online?
COD 4 and Warhawk are definitely better multiplayer games. I don't necessarily like FPS and Warhawk dragged me in easily. MLB 08 the Show is outstanding if you like baseball. I'm a single-player fan mostly so what I can recommend in that realm is Burnout Paradise (I never played an older version, but I hear old fans don't like it... I have a blast with it), AC, Motorstorm, ResistanceFOM, and especially MGS4.. grab the 1-3 pack if you have a BC PS3.

- Uncharted is a good single player
- Ratchet and Clank the same

1. Is the Sony PS3 remote the best for the price? Or is there a third party remote that I'd be better off getting instead? I intend to use the PS3 my DVD player as well as my Bluray player.I recommend using the official remote. It's pretty good and I really like it.
:lol:There's a thread somewhere about a memory card, sending it to different CAGs, I dunno. I have two of them, but I kind of offered my other one to a friend already.
You can copy from the memory card adapter to PS3, and from the PS3 back to a PS2 memory card (Firmware 1.8 added that). It's good to have IMO because if you are going to play on a PS1/PS2, you can copy back.
Once you get a PS3, you can use a USB flash drive, SD Card, Compact Flash, Memory Stick Pro, etc. to transfer data (I even transferred it to my PC also so do a double backup).
3. Exclusives. What PS3 exclusives am I missing out on? I'm getting MGS4, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, as well as Eye of Judgment. Anything else? Those are pretty good, but I will admit Heavenly Sword is one that not everyone will like (combat is a bit different).
Anyway, some others that come to my mind are:
Folklore (IMO, highly underrated Action RPG)
GT5: Prologue (although a bit on the short side and possibly best to wait for the price to drop a little, the controls are terrific and plays really good)
Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds (if you are into the series, it's excellent)
Ratchet & Clank Future: ToD (My favorite PS3 game after Uncharted)
Ridge Racer 7 (Best RR IMO, but if you aren't into the series, you will not like it)
SingStar (if you want a good Karaoke game, this is the game. Awesome downloads)
Warhawk (I personally think it's good, but it's a like it or hate it game)
And a game like Time Crisis 4 is something you'll either like or hate. I like it since I'm into Time Crisis and light-gun games, but the graphics are nothing special and it's short. I also like Formula One: CE (there's a demo up, but I assume most aren't into Formula 1 racing like me) and I like MotorStorm (but do feel it lacks gameplay modes and quite hard, but the sequel should fix the issues).
Also, I'd recommend downloading PSN games like:
Everyday Shooter
High Velocity Bowling (It was the bowling game I played on the video chat)
PixelJunk Monsters (addictive RTS)
Super Stardust HD (Highly Recommended)
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Online (I'm a big fan of Tekken 5, and this is the best version IMO, due to online and Arcade perfect in HD).
Wild Arms PS1 download (If you want an RPG and never bought one. Only $6 too)
Wipeout HD (when it comes out)
4. Is the HDMI connection on the PS3 proprietary? Or can I just order a cheap one off MonoPrice and be good to go?Any standard HDMI cable will work. If you don't have to convert to DVI, just use a Male to Male cable. I got mine for $5.25 at monoprice.com (cheaper now) and no issues.
Hope this helps. :D
Does anybody have problems with DMC4 crashing during loading or transition to a new area of the game? Mine just happen 2x in 15 mins and the only thing i can think of is the recent firmware upgrade. Anybody has this issue?

I have one thing holding me back. I have a 360 which I would sell but I have invested quite the amount in Rock Band songs and am wondering if anyone knows or thinks that Sony/ Microsoft/ EA/ Harmonix would transfer the songs I bought. I rather doubt it but if anyone has experience I would love to know. Thanks in advance.

I don't know how Rockband DLC works (like would it be available without access to your XBL account?) but couldn't you bundle rockband and the 360 together and advertise all the extra songs? You may get some of your money back that way.

I may just have to keep both. Honestly my want for a PS3 is driven by the format war being over. I would even be willing to pay for an upgraded 360 if they ever added blu-ray but I guess I will just have to wait and see. BTW... thanks for the tip about selling the 360 with advertised songs available. I never have used my credit card on my account so I would imagine it being pretty safe.

what headset do people use (for those cheapasses amongst us). I've been looking at warhawk prices on ebay and the game only seems to go for significantly less than with the headset. Is that headset worth an extra $20 or is there a decent cheap one somewhere?
I don't mean to threadjack, but I think this is appropriate for the topic considering consensus seems to be COD should have a headset too.

I'm think about picking up the MGS4 bundle but since I'm planing to play a lot of PS2 games on the 80GB PS3, I hope the current 80GB owners could share some experience about the BC. I know I could check which PS2 games are supported by PS3 on sony's website, my question is if sony lists a game as " no major problems", does that mean the game play smoothly on the 80GB PS3? Is the graphics generally better, worse or almost the same on the PS3? Thanks!

I didn't see anything about this in the forums, but has anybody has freezing issues with MGS on their PS3?
I've never played through the game and decided to pick it up. Right after Psycho Mantis, the game freezes. I've tried everything and can't get it to work. Anybody seen any issues with the game or is my disc just messed up?
Thanks!

On an HDTV, playing PS2 games with the upscaling feature from the PS3 will look much better than it would if you tried to play it using your PS2. The PS2 was just not made for HDTVs so even if you use a component video connection, it still looks like crap. I had given up playing all of my PS2 games when I first got my 52" HDTV until Sony finally implemented the upscaling feature.
Also if the PS site lists the game as having no major problems, there should be no major problems. However, if there are some problems listed for the game you are looking up, usually they are worse than they state.

Installing a 5200rpm HDD definitely won't slow it down since the original HDD was also 5200rpm.
However, people have tested the 7200rpm and noted about a 10% speed increase on installs. On the flip side, the internal temperature increased by a couple of degrees. To me the minimal speed increase isn't worth the danger of the higher temperatures.

As kingbroly said the 40gb has PS1 bc - I can confirm this personally having just played Street Fighter EX on mine. The problem probably lies in the wacky controller stuff that happens at that moment in the game. Do you have a 2nd controller? Try having it active before you launch the game.

40 gigs have BC, trust me.
I know what you're talking about, but it's after that part. It's the scene directly after, in fact.
I've actually gotten past the first initial load, but the second cut scene freezes over and over again. I'll probably just go and try to get the disc cleaned and try my luck.

Whether it changes the look depends on the quality of the screen. Different screens usually have different looks.
However, remember that you don't need to get a monitor that supports HDMI. Instead, just make sure it supports the digital video port, I think it's DVI or something similar for PC monitors. Then there's a converter that you can use to use HDMI with DVI.

Yes, the 40GB has PS1 BC.
Anyway, this is something that has issues regardless of SKU (not really talking about MGS1 here), where Sony will have an update and sometimes causes in issue in one game. There might have been an update within 2.35 that messed this up, but I dunno.
Which MGS1 disc is it? Does it come from the MGS Essentials or is it the traditional PS1 disc? Also, is it the GH or non-GH version? I ask these questions also because for some games (regardless of SKU) performance varies based on what you have.

Well, what is more important about having HDMI/DVI is if it supports HDCP. That monitor does, so it should work. I don't have any experience with the PS3(though that will change today :D). I have a 22" monitor that I am going to try out with today after work today :).

I plan on getting a ps3 with the new 80gb bundle comming out, and had a question about the cables to use. I have a 36 inch Sony wega TV I use for gaming at the moment. It has component video inputs but only supports up to 480i. From what I understand that is the same picture quality I can get with the composite cables that come with the ps3. Is it worth it to spend the extra money and get the component cable if the tv can still only output 480i? I also have an s-video cable from my ps2 (dont even know if that would work with the ps3 yet). To anyone out there with a similar setup, what is my best option for hook up in my current situation?
Thanks

Fixed. There are a few games that won't run on the 20/60 or that have issues with freezing/loading. For most people, it will still seem like full compatibility (unless you want to play Tomba or Indigo Prophecy - there may be others, but those are what I've found).
That said, my 60gig ran through MGS1 without a hitch.

My game freezes (PS button and all) so I go to shut down manually. I feel my PS3, and it's hot as all hell. Like I cold throw some eggs and steak on it and have me a nice breakfast kind of hot. So I restarted and played the game, and it froze again. Can this kind of stuff damage my PS3?

No, I meant the overheating of the system. I remember I used to play my PS1 for hours on end and that sucker got hot quick, but I never had problems with it. I know for the 360 if it gets to hot or something like that it can lead to RROD (? maybe I'm wrong about that) Is there anything like that for the PS3 where the system gets too hot and it just breaks down?

But since the PS3 generates a lot of power, it will get hot, but not to worry (PS3 isn't exactly built on cheap components).
PS3 doesn't get the yellow light of death from overheating, only a hardware failure (which rarely happens). A PS3 console dying for overheating has next to never happened (most die from the blu-ray disc laser stopped functioning (mostly in 60GB SKUs)).

If you're going to buy an extra set of cables, you might as well try to get Component. It's much easier than bending behind your TV to line up the damn pins on the S-Video plug. If not, just stick with the composite until you get an HDTV.

You're probably better of getting component as when you do get an HDTV, you can use the same cable and get up to 1080p (or 1080i, not sure what component can do on PS3).

Redirected question (Thanks TMK for the help):
Whenever I put in a Blu-Ray movie in my PS3, It will play for a few minutes and then the picture will freeze, but the sound will continue on. When I eject the disk, there is some kind oily subastance that I can wipe off. When I put the disk back in again, same thing happens, just not in the same place. I remove the disk, and again, an oily substance. Did something break? I dont want to keep using it if it's going to dirty the lens.

Unless the PS3 has native bridging capabilities I don't think it's possible. I'm sure that someone who has done this has also installed Linux and is using a Linux app to provide the bridging.
