Is anyone having problems connecting to Live right now? I haven't used my 360 in a few weeks, just powered it back on, and I couldn't log in. It sat on the "twirling 360 logo" screen for a minute and then dumped me back to whatever screen I was on.

My network tests checked out-it claimed it can connect.

After maybe the tenth attempt, it finally logged in, while I was writing this, but I'll post it anyway just to see if anyone else has had issues.

I spoke too soon...it's connected, but something's still wrong as it thinks there aren't any game demos available to download. Ditto for X-Box 1 games and anything else I tried viewing.

Well, nice to know I'm not the only one having problems right now...

On a possibly related note, Major Nelson's site seems to be down, and I can't log in at xbox.com online either.

K. Glad I'm not the only one. My dashboard tells me I'm connected but I can't join any games in COD4, it tells me I must have a internet connection to play XBL games.

whew! i was goin crazy tryin to figured out why i couldnt play CoD4 either. It says I am logged into XBOX Live, but a popup says "Can't log in to Messenger."

Think it'll be back up soon? I really wanna play, lol.

I'll post once mine is back up, if someone would do the same thatd be awesome.

Several days ago I couldn't connect all day. Not in the slightest. I thought it was my connection in some way, shape, or form but after a few diagnostics it ended up being Live. After checking Live's site and whatnot they posted that Live was down for different customers and they were working on it. Seems like it's been an issue for almost a week and it's quite random.

All I know is that when it hits I get upset. ;)

Major problems trying to create a new gamertag and signup to XBL for my little bro on his new 360. Way to sour the experience for new adopters MS.

I received my repaired-from-rrod 360 from fedex on Wednesday and although it passed network tests and had an IP it wouldn't log in any live accounts. I gave up, but then a new game successfully connected to live to get updates.

Props to the fedex guy who wrote his cell number on the "sorry we missed you" tag stuck to the door. Called the number and luckily he was only three minutes away from me. I drove to meet at his next stop and signed for the package. He said there were five more packages just like it on the truck.

I wish I always had the number of the person with my package that is "On FedEx vehicle for delivery" since 6:55am. I would even be okay with just a 30 minute window of when they will be at my address.

I had problems yesterday getting to the dashboard when logged into Live. I had to disconnect and then connect from CoD4. Even then, I had problems getting into games and then getting booted. It's pretty ridiculous.

I had some problems with xbl yesterday.

It connected to xbl no problem but then it couldn't retrieve my HALO 3 rank and connecting to servers was just a no-go strangely.

I had crazy problems yesterday. It stopped waiting after 3 minutes for the dashboard to load. I kept getting that dotted circle thing for ages. It was only whilst trying to connect to live. I hope it goes away soon.

Press "X" in the dashboard so you can do stuff. Once you load the game, go into multiplayer and you should be able to connect. I couldn't get to my dashboard at all while it was trying to connect to Live.

Yeah, it's really weird. MANY multiple attempts to get logged in, but then Bioshock updated without problems...but it took an hour trying to get that free download pack for it.

And then once I *DID* finally get it to start downloading, both that and the Dark Messiah of Might and Magic demo I downloaded went super fast, like there was nothing wrong. It's just trying to actually START them that was bad.

I get the notice saying I logged in and it even has the pop up for friends online, but it doesn't actually show them on the LIVE tab and instead has the connect to xbox live choice. Once I load up a game, I get the you have signed in to live notice as well as all my friend notices again, and it seems to be fine after that. Still pretty damn annoying, and these issues have been happening for like a week or so now.

This is just sad. 50 bucks a month for a service that gets messed up almost one a Week for every month? I mean It must be nice for the Free Customers on the PS3 cause if there service goes down, they don't really have anything to complain about. But what about the people playing monthly? This is just sad. I hope we get some kind of Reimbursement.

Yeah, they really need to give everyone a free couple of days or something, if not a whole month.

But they won't as the license agreement says they're not responsible for technical difficulties, outages etc.

Its $50 per year and this is prolly the 3rd time in 4 years Ive had issues with the service. Others have had more issues, but damn is it a better alternative to the BS required for PC fps gaming.

PS3 does a good job, Sony really needs to streamline PSNetwork tho.

Considering that you can get a 13 month card for like $40 (which equals out to $3.07 per month, which is $0.77 per week), LIVE is really cheap. Other utilities such as cable, cell, etc are like $50 a month.

You don't pay 50 bucks a month for Live. Also, nothing in this world is beyond the ability to fail. Give them some time to fix whatever the problem is. Live has been stellar for the most part since it went online many years ago.

I'm sure they "expect this shit" to be fixed too. Most of us have had time off whether from school or work.

So, out of the year a few days go wonky. Since 2004 this is the first major issue I have seen. This is the holidays and tech people could be visiting family for all we know. 100% up time is impossible and none of us are IT people. They are probably going through hell trying to fix this and they certainly aren't half-assing it. Complaining isn't going to make them work any faster.

this sucks, i can't play any game where i've downloaded legally purchased content offline, fuck fuck fuck. oh well, going to vegas in an hour or so. lol

That's why I'm not going for these console download services. Not until they have more fair DRM terms (like at least Steam you only need to authenticate once each time you reinstall an OS or change computers-similar with iTunes).

Yeah, but those actually give you something for your money. Everything Live does is done free on PC. There's no way I can justify $40/year for it, let alone $50. Not when a bit more buys a year of Gametap, or 2-6 games, or...

Anyway glad to hear people are reporting it's working again.

It's a spoof on the skit Night at the Roxbury from Saturday Night Live.

This is the original clip. Someone just put Picard, Riker and Data's heard in place instead. There's other spoof with Bill Cosby, Randy Savage and others, but I like the Trek one the best since I am a huge Trek fan.

Just realize this....

$50 a year for Live.

365 days a year.

That equals about 14 cents per day, so even with the outage being 3 to 5 days it wouldn't amount to much.

Still doesn't change the fact that I service I paid for is out for 3-5 days. If my cable or my internet goes down, I expect to be compensated the 3-5 days it's out. The same with Xbox Live. I don't think it's an unreasonable request.

I agree, I'm just saying it won't be much.
It would be quite an expensive lesson to MS, however. $.14/day over 5 days = $.70. Now multiply that by the number of paying members. (Quick google search is showing 6-8 million, so we'll go with the low number). 6,000,000 x .70 = $4.2 million. That's for 5 days!

I know that's still a drop in the bucket for MS, but it's still enough to make their butt hurt. Of course, these numbers are sheer speculation, and I can't gaurantee accuracy.

What the F did this patch do?! Did my 360 fans turn off? I think my 360 is overheating. Say if I had my 360 off for an hour it would work for 5 minutes, then if I only have it off for 5 minutes it would work for 1 minute and if I have it off for like 30 seconds it would work for like 10 seconds. And it even froze at the Xbox Logo boot up.

It would get all distorted colors. Like patterns of blue or a blue screen or green lines.

Does this relate to the problems with Live? I unplugged my internet and took out my hard drive and it still freezes.

T_T The 360 is a peice of shit.

Lolol. I called and talked to the guy and told him about my freezing problem and he said, "Well it seems like its a hardware failure. You are going to have to pay 90 dollars for this repair" and so I quickly said, "Oh, it just gave me 3 red rings. What does that mean?" (I was lieing I just know you get free shipping if you say that) so then he was like, "Oh, ok then it will be free and we will ship you a box and a free xbox live membership". Nice.

Fuck now I have to wait 2-3 weeks.

I was the only one of my friends that has had no problems with the 360. So that makes 4 + me of my friends with broken 360's and only 4 of my friends own a 360. The POS award of the year goes to 360!!!

Once a week? Man, thats your shitty ISP connection, not XBL.

I've never had a problem until now and when they shut it down for a couple hours to update the servers. Which they absolutely have to do, and yes it requires hours.

Sounds to me that they're just having issues because of all the new kids with 360s... Everyone needs to stop being and whiner and give it some time, its only been a coulple days, and most people can still play games, its just delayed and buggy. I didnt even have any trouble till last night.

Also, whats up with the 9 days? I count 6 from Xmas right now... and I never had an real issue (other than just slow) till last night.

What you people need to realize, is that what they're doing with XBL is A> Never been Done before, and they're treading new water, B> The scale of XBL is enormous. It would be nice if companies could spend billions on updating servers and speeds to never have this issue... but in all honesty... making XBL isnt free, and making it into what it is now is pretty insane. I'm a systems administrator for a defense contract company, and I know a very minor bit of what makes XBL work, and let me tell you... the amount of work to keep something like that up and stable is pretty mindblowing.

What I'm saying is Relax, when shit like this happens... you get people staying 24+ hours on the clock to fix it. They knew the problem before it got to this scale, sometimes it gets worse before its gets better. Im sure they're implimenting new servers.

Also, for Darkness Bear.... of course PS3 is never slow... PS3 doesnt have a third of the online traffic.

The bigger the network and enabled connections, the harder it is to balance it. You can expect for it to never have issues.

Most of the time on the 22, 29 and 30th I couldn't get into games or anything on live. That's been the case for most (very late at night through early afternoon excepted) from reading the x-box boards.

Yep, it's probably just the spike in new consoles and people being home for the holidays giving them problems. But it is annoying because:

1. It's not like they don't know that x-mas is the peak time for sales and new XBL accounts, and that it's probably the peak play week for many gamers as its one of the few times a lot of people have a week or more off, plus they just got new games for X-mas.

In othewords, the surge was predictible, and if that is indeed the problem, then you think a company as big as MS would have the foresite to do a big server expansion every fall to be ready for the X-mas rush.

2. Related, it sucks more since people have the week off and planned to catch up on some Live gaming and can't.

I think it's just that with the networking glitches that have not been patched yet in CoD4, coupled with the Live issues this week, it's just magnifying the flaws in CoD4 Multi-player. This is the original clip. Someone just put Picard, Riker and Data's heard in place instead. There's other spoof with Bill Cosby, Randy Savage and others, but I like the Trek one the best since I am a huge Trek fan.

Cool! Yeah, I *LOVE* the Next Generation version. Way cooler than the original :D

I'm a big Star Trek fan too. Heck, I even enjoyed Voyager and Enterprise even if they kind of failed to use their premises very well most of the time. Liked seasons 1, 2, and 4 of Enterprise better than 3 though.

I saw later on you mentioned Elite Force-I loved that game single player. I've got to play through that again sometime.

Yeah, I don't know anyone "in real life" that hasn't been through a few. The last holdouts who bragged about their launch units had them bite the dust this year. A couple have switched platforms from all this. And yeah, I don't think your problems have anything to do with the network issues. So far I've had my Falcon randomly power down on me once in 100+ hours, which is better than my other units ever did. WAY cooler too.

Hope they fix it for you free even though it's not a red ring of death. I mean clearly whatever it is it's their issue. I don't think that 3 year warranty should be limited just to one particular way it can die. (Only one of mine actually died with three red rings, the other two were weird error codes e62 or 74 or some random thing.)

Maybe that is why EA insisted on using their own servers? I always wondered about that.
Nope.

This is EA we're talking about.

They do it so they can update their in-game advertisements, so they can forward your information to third-parties and so they can shut down the servers of year old sports titles, so the consumer is forced to buy the latest and "greatest" if they want to play it online.

I'm pretty sure, if I tried playing NCAA College Hoops 2K3 on my PS2, the servers would be shut down.

I said it before.. a few days is OK, IMO, but it's been a week+..and we pay for the service.

I believe you're paying for the inability to even see the dashboard when you're logged in, right?

Whenever I want to go play an arcade game, I have to sign out, go to the dashboard---->the game, and THEN sign in once I'm playing. Today was the first day the dashboard has worked for me, signed into live, in a week.

Not sure about playing online, but I at least still had some issues with downloading. It kept saying 'unavailable' for the first few times I'd hit something, and then suddenly work. Also, there was a 50/50 shot it would be unable to complete the download the first time.

So, it ultimately works, but it's WAY more of a hassle than it should be.

I JUST got a 360 for X-mas and have had a TON of Xbox live problems. I guess I'm not the only one.. I was getting ready to replace my router to see if this was the issue (I already did the port forwarding but that didn't seem to help)

I assume they are getting hit hard from all the folks (like me) who just got an Xbox and are now hopping on live. But man, M$ really needs to get its act together, I know how great an Xbox live can be, but a lot of people may hit these roadblocks and decide its not worth it. I understand they spent nearly the entire holidays working on it, but it's hard to believe they didn't expect a total meltdown like this eventually, especially with all the new 360s out there now because of Christmas. I hope this is fixed long term, for a long, long time.

It seems my console locks up if I have signed into Live and I try to stream my music from the PC (custom soundtracks). I assume this is because of the issues they have been having, because it has never done this previously.

If I start the streaming process before signing in, it seems to work.

Then again, my console just froze while playing Half-Life 2...ugh. I surely hope this was due to me being on Live, and not my console beginning to crap out!

Actually I see no problem in people wanting compensation for this. When a service that you pay for is effectively rendered unusable due to circumstances beyond your control, I feel one is legitimately entitled to some form of reimbursement, contract extension, etc. I pay for Live so I can play games with other people, not so my system can lock up whenever it's plugged in.

I (and hopefully) others wouldn't be asking for things if this was the PS3 network.

Other major networks that have gone down (XM satellite radio, Blackberry network, etc.) have all offered (albeit paltry) compensation to their users. Live is in a position where they can easily offer a week of coverage or a free download without really "losing" any money. As a show of good faith, I hope they do so.

except it broke at the main time people wanted to use their service. Many people had a lot of time off and wanted to play with friends and family and they thwarted by the crappiness of the XBL servers. Most people won't have that much available time to play until the same time next year. Its like if your cable went out during the superbowl or something, you would expect the cable company to step it up for the outage.

Also, a lot of people just got their systems at Christmas. So for many of these people, this is their first experience with Live. It'd be a good PR move to compensate in some way; it would help ease parents' fears that they didn't just throw a bunch of money down the toilet.

Actually, my cable box broke during New Years last year and I don't think I was compensated for anything besides the 2-3 days I was without cable. So yes, MS should give everyone a week or two free (extended) to their GOLD accounts.
