Me too - I just went in for one today. I really had no plans to buy a PS3 at the moment, but was going to get one down the road. The thing that sold me on this was the price, good feedback from everyone else and I wanted one that had system supported bc. I didn't realize they even made 60 gbs that weren't fully bc...... I thought only the 40gbs and 80 gbs (other than software wise) weren't. Hopefully gamefunk does right on replacing the 80gb for 60 gb.

Hmmm, as far as I know, there aren't any NTSC 60GB units that do not have hardware BC. The PAL 60GB units have software BC, though. I am guessing that any NTSC units that have 60GB drives and software BC are actually newer units that people put 60GB drives in, hoping to fool buyers.

I checked mine and it was 46/55gb.
Confirmed it by checking the model # as well.

Well, gamefunk contacted me today and sent me a return label via e-mail. They have offered to send me the 60GB that I had ordered once the accidental 80GB is back in their possession. There was only one hang-up -- the return label they sent wasn't enough to cover the shipping cost. So hopefully they will send me a new label with the correct postage. If the 60GB is in the same condition as the 80GB I will be a happy customer, I just wish they didn't screw up in the first place. A nice, new copy of Uncharted is just begging to be played, when I get the 60GB.

Hi Roy,
You should have been sent a shipping label for an 18lb package. Please let me know if that was not the case. Please email the difference you paid to customerservice@gamefunk.com with your order number and we can deduct that amount from your final purchase.
I apologize for the mix-up. :( We'll make sure we get this taken care of quickly.
Thanks,
Mary

Mary, I have taken the package with the label sent from gamefunk to two separate post offices and both tell me the postage paid won't cover the item. They say that shipping would be $32 instead of the $10.70 for priority shipping for 18 lbs. that the label I was sent said. I don't feel like I should have to pay the difference in the shipping, because it wasn't my fault that I was sent the wrong item. I was hoping this process would've been a lot smoother. Oh, Roy isn't my name it's just my gamertag based off a fictional character. Maybe eventually I'll have the item I ordered.

In fact, when I go to the USPS site and calculate the shipping based on the weight of the box and it's dimensions I get a priority shipping cost of $32.85. I don't mean to be a pain in the neck, but the shipping is way more than $10.70.

I believe what she is asking you to do is to go ahead and pay the difference in shipping and then send them an email detailing you order number and the difference that you had to pay for return shipping. They will then subtract the amount that you had to pay for return shipping from the final price of your order.
It makes sense. They've already paid for the shipping label that they've sent to you and they can't very well unsend it. They just need you to pay the difference for the time being, and then they'll refund the portion of the shipping for which you had to pay.
At least, I think that's what they're asking. It makes matters a bit more complicated than either party probably would have liked, but it should work itself out in the end.

Wow! $32???!!! That's quite ridiculous. I could ship it to Canada for that rate. I can say I've seen discrepencies of $10 or so, but not $20. Something is very fishy about that. I'd like to talk to your postmaster because it seems like they're trying to make money off of us :) I'll have customer service email you today with a new return shipping label for a greater weight.
Also, if indeed your post master still refuses that label, when the package arrives we will refund the difference in shipping. However, when I see what branch it is coming from, I will surely call them and give them a piece of my mind.

Mary, I had it shipped off today and I paid the difference. I took it two separate post offices and both gave me the same total. I had to pay $21.40 out of my pocket to ship it back. I have the receipt as well if you need it for your records. I've also did what you asked and sent an e-mail with my order number and the amount I paid so I can get reimbursed.

If you think $32 is rediculous to ship, how come you are charging $34 for ground and $79 to Canada? Also your priority shipping is $68. This is no where near the amount provided with the postage you are providing to ship back for mistakes. It seems to me that you are giving much less to ship or you are infact "trying to make money off of us :)" through shipping.

That's what has been holding me back...the shipping and tax killed the deal for me. They don't offer local pickup either. Not that I'm sure I'd be local enough but shipping does suck and killed the deal for me. Funny how its considered expensive when the tables are turned.

Thats a pretty typical cost for USPS Priority Mail for a package of that size. The only thing that is remotely close to $10 would be Media Mail which i wouldnt recommend. With my past experiences im quite sure they take the package and ship it via homeless hitchhiker. In otherwords it gets there when it gets there. Priority mail on the other hand has been every bit as reliable and even faster in most circumstances then UPS or Fedex ground, hence the price difference.

You guys are brutal. Stores make a little money on shipping - this is nothing new. If you aren't happy with the shipping rates, don't buy - they certainly aren't having trouble selling units at these prices.
Sorry, but it's rare to have a rep from a given retailer provide interaction with customers through a forum like this, and I think it's kinda bush league to give her the third degree.
I don't think game consoles qualify for Media Mail anyway - only game media.
While normaly I'd agree with what you said, I have to disagree this time...she revealed her hands...she said she could ship to Canada for $32, yet the site charges $75 for shipping to Canada...c'mon...this is CheapAssGamer after all.
I know that complaining about it won't affect their sales, like you said, they are obviously selling pretty good by themselves.

Well I think they might...after all the douche that sent me a busted ass PS3 on eBay shipped it media mail and it was in a pretty big box...though he could have scammed USPS since he printed his own label.

haha, I'd deleted the contrarian parts of my post because I decided not to pick a fight, but fair enough. Being a CheapAssGamer is one thing, but I find it pretty miserly to call out shipping profits when the overall price is obviously quite fair. Do people email buy.com after they weigh their items upon receipt and find they could have shipped them themselves for $0.50 cheaper?
Maybe it's just me, as an eBay seller who uses shipping profits to partially offset eBay/Paypal fees.

I checked that out too. Yikes. We certainly didn't ship it to you for $33, otherwise we wouldn't have charged $34 for shipping and handling. We'd never be able to pay our warehouse workers. We get a discount through USPS since we ship out hundreds of packages a day, and they have never refused one of our pre-paid shipping labels for a return. Since the label was paid for through our account, they should have accepted it. Did he even scan it in?
I think I'm going to circumvent the headache the postal service is causing here and have our customer service send you a UPS ground label. This way you won't need to pay anything up front. We don't typically use UPS for return labels as our merchant software isn't integrated with it... but options are good.
I'll also be discounting your purchase as this is taking way too long to get handled.
Sorry for the pain. I'll make sure the label gets emailed in the next ten minutes. Feel free to time me :)

I shipped mine back to them with the $10 postage that they sent me on Saturday. The usps guy looked at it and accepted it without asking me anything. Just got my refund on the PS3 today. I didn't even think about the postage not being enough to cover shipping costs. Guess I got lucky.

Yeah, I am pretty sure game consoles don't quality for that. Media mail is basically the old "book rate," and it is a cheap way of sending media of many types (books, tapes, disks, whatever). I don't doubt this stops people from sending whatever they want in media mail and getting away with it. Still, I think I read somewhere that the USPS reserves the right to ask you to open the package and prove you are only sending media, if they have their doubts.

Media has always been great for me, whenever I've been sending 3-4 game guides to someone, though it IS woefully slow as you said. However, if someone wanted their stuff even faster, I'd agree to send PM Flat Rate Box for about $9 something, but they would pay the difference. That's the thing with my deals, the shipping IS included, unless I say otherwise and the shipping rate is up to ME.
For larger bundles of guides, I send via the flat rate box and admittedly, I've learned how to 'stuff' those boxes almost to the breaking point, but pack them careful enough that nothing gets messed up in transit. It's about doing it for the cheapest rate, while maximizing the amount YOU make.
I don't doubt that retailers and Ebayers gouge a bit on shipping to help pay for other costs. I don't blame them really, as long as it's not TOO gouged.
The shipping, possible tax(in my state of PA which just started to go after internet businesses to pay up) and the few stories of receiving the wrong systems have put me off trying for this deal, though it IS still a pretty good deal considering that you get the BC model for $359.(plus tax, shipping, etc).

I think there are more satisfied customers than people with problems in this thread. Yes, a few people who ordered recently had problems, but I still recommend gamefunk.com to anyone who is tired of trying to find a 60 GB PS3.
I thought tax would kill the deal for me, also. But tax wasn't applied to my order, fortunately. You can always throw one in your cart and see if tax is applied before you hit the submit button :)

See, I know where there's a brand new 60gb model near me, two stores actually have them in stock still(somehow). So, rather than take the chance and have to ship the item back, I'll probably just get one of the 60gb models from one of the stores I know that has them in stock.
Sure, I'll be paying about $530 with tax, which is more than this deal, but I won't have to wait for it to ship AND I can just take it right back to the store if it turns out someone swapped out the 60gb for a 40gb, as I've heard of people doing lately.

I admit the experience of getting the wrong console has been a hassle, but gamefunk has been very cooperative and have done all they can to make it less of an inconvenience. Once I get the 60GB in my hands it'll be worth it. As far as I know, I was the only one in this thread that was sent a wrong system. So, their track record is still pretty good and their customer service so far has been good.

I got my console on Monday, its flawless so far. Obviously the box was a little beat up but the system itself was in fine shape. If someone told me it was new I would've believed them. Plugged it in, it works flawlessly. I would recommend one to anyone that is on the fence. My order came to 393, I believe with shipping to Iowa.

Ahhhh ok.....well I know when I was about to send in one of my PS2's for a repair for what I thought was a video problem, I told them I got it new. Although, even if I bought one of these 60gb models, it would be out of warranty anyway, but I may be leaning towards a used system, since I would have a bit left over from my deal I'm in the middle of now.
And, from the looks of it, that 60 gb by me isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

I had frayed wires with the HD component and power adapter cables for the Xbox 360 I ordered from them, and emailed them in the night about it. Next day I received a reply that they were sending me a replacement with a tracking number. I don't even have to send the defective parts back. I say get the used 60GB hands down. Why? You get a lot more for your money...full backwards compatibility with the PS2 games, 20GB extra harddrive space...why not? Sure the other one is shiny and new, but it's also a lesser value if you ask me, even when you consider shipping costs.

I was sent a defective 60GB that doesn't read PS2 games at all. Even though I'm very aggravated at the moment I understand GameFunk wouldn't knowingly send me a defective unit. With the wait time and hassle of sending it back I regret not paying a little more for a brand new one. At this point it will probably be close to a month after the original purchase date that I will get a working PS3. It's too bad because the PS3 I got was in excellent condition and even the controller was in great shape which I know isn't always the case since some of you have posted about getting ones that were worn down. I actually feel bad about giving GameFunk a bad review but something as simple as inserting a PS2 game into my console before they sent it to me could have avoided all these problems and saved me a ton of time. Mary was very nice when I told her about my PS3 and GameFunk sent me a shipping sticker to send it back to them so I'll post again when I get my next one.

I had ordered a used 20GB Xbox 360 from them. It worked great for the first few days and now it keeps giving a red ring. Already tried a different power adapter, HD component cable and detached/reattached the HDD with no luck. Going to return it and now I'm thinking I should just go and get a new one considering how fragile the older Xbox model are. The newer Falcon model seems to be more reliable.

man, i've been carefully watching ebay as well as looking around for new 60 gig consoles and this deal still stands as the best one out there right now. I really don't need the system now as I have a 360 and a Wii and plenty of games to play, but I'll definitely be wanting this down the road when some of the big name games start coming out, and who knows how hard it will be to find a 60 gig model later on. I'm also a bit wary of buying used but these sound like they're in good shape...

I've been watching this thread and the gamefunk site for several weeks now - this whole deal has been driving me nuts. I don't need a PS3 (already have 360 and Wii), but at the same time I want it...and that finally led to me pulling the trigger on this deal tonight. The current game line-up still isn't that impressive to me, but there are some exclusives here and there that I'd like to give a whirl. I mainly bought this in good faith that 2008 is the year the PS3 starts picking up, and because by the time I finally do decide that the PS3 is good, the 60gb model will be long gone. I really hope that I made a good choice here.

Even if in regards to the gaming lineup it doesnt "beat" the other 2, at the very least its a Bluray player.
Im getting a PS3 later this month simply for that reason, the addition of being able to play the Sony exclusives is just an added bonus. I have a 360 and am very happy with it, but Bluray is clearly surpassing HD-DVD, and that is the main reason why I want a PS3.

So basically, you want to watch 'zomg next gen DVDs' on what is a GAME MACHINE? I think the added functions are nice, but wholly useless to those who watch maybe 3 movies on any home video format in a given year(like me).
The only time I ever used my CD playing function on my PS1 was when I was testing it prior to trading/selling it. The only time I ever used my PS2's dvd playing function was also just before I was going to trade/sell it. So, while I think the picture is nice and crisp and snazzy, I doubt I'd ever use the BR DVD playback function(or the regular DVD playback function for that matter).
At this point, I'm talking myself out of getting a PS3 I think, since I know I never even used the BC on my PS2 to play PS1 games so the 60gb I've been eying up would be kind of a useless purchase for $500. I hope Sony hurries their ass up and releases a 40gb bundled with a DS3 sometime within the next 6 months. If they do, then I might bite. But, the lack of games I'd wanna play right now, coupled with the fact my one friend and his family have a PS3(and I could just rent/buy games for it and play them there) has me backing back down from my near splurge purchase of a PS3.

Well, that's you. Different strokes for different folks.
For me, I have a massive HDTV and I like to watch movies as much as I like to play games and probably buy equal amounts (in terms of quantity) of movies/games. I also don't plan on using Bluray as the only way to watch as I have a pretty damn decent upconverting player for standard DVD to 1080p, but the difference between standard and Bluray is very noticable on larger TVs. I should state that the the Buray aspect is more the "push over the edge" more than the main catalyst, because even if it was games only, Id probably end up getting one as Sony has some fantastic exclusives coming out, but it would be later rather than sooner. I also do not have a PS2 at the moment, so BC comes into play as well as there are still many games on the PS2 that I havent yet had the chance to play, and with the addition of PS3 upscaling PS2 games, its a win-win-win from my perspective. The fact that I don't have to pay for multiplayer with the PS3 if I do decide to go online with the games I get for it, is also a plus. The 360 will remain my main gaming machine until PS3 surpasses it, if that ever should happen.
It may be a game machine, but the functionality of the PS3 goes a lot further than just being about games. They hype the shit out of that aspect, but having seen them in action, and also being able to afford it makes it an easy decision for me.

Obviously, if you don't watch a lot of movies, the Blu-ray aspect of the PS3 wouldn't appeal to you. But for me, the PS3 was a great buy. I have only owned a few games for it (and currently only have one in my possession), but I have gotten great mileage out of it watching DVDs and Blu-ray movies.

I guess I'm actually getting some sense of how to be a rational thinking person finally, since I just talked myself back out of getting a PS3, since my one friends sister has one and I go up there all the time.
So, for now, I can just live vicariously through them and not have to blow 500 smackers for BC and movie playing I doubt I'd use anyway.
Glad I didn't get buyers remorse a month after just splurging on the PS3.
I just wish Sony would hurry the f up and plop a DS 3 in with any and all future SKU's, so I could play any future games with the real next gen tech: rumble. LOL

<looks around, as if waiting for Mykevermin to come in and say I'm up to my old redundant shit again>
Seriously though, I had my mind all made up, I was gonna go get the 60gb on Monday or so, but then I'm like 'I could use the $500 someplace else where I'd get alot more use out of it at the moment'. Maybe I'm learning to be rational and actually THINK before I just make a large purchase without thinking of if I may need the $$$ for something else?
At least I'm not having buyers remorse anymore AFTER I make a big purchase and I'm like 'wtf did I buy this for'.
Also, whenever I do get around to buying an HDtv, it won't be a humungous one(20-22" at most for my SMALL room), since I'd be the only one in my household using it. So, I doubt the difference would be that noticable to me as far as picture quality goes. I've seen a 32" or larger LCD tv with Spiderman 3 on BR and I was definitely impressed, but not enough, not yet anyway.
Based on the fact that you don't have an HDTV, its probably smarter for you to wait, not being snarky by saying that, but if you already have a "next gen" machine then you'd simply be getting it for Sony gaming, for me theres a lot more that I would be using it for regularly. HDTV does make a difference, especially in regards to games and movies. Sometimes they're not the biggest of, but in the case of something like Planet Earth in Bluray vs Planet Earth in standard, its almost night and day. In fact, if I was in your shoes, I'd be more looking at the TV upgrade before anything else. Once you go HD for good, you will never want to go back to standard. The more you watch HD, the less tolerable standard becomes.
I have a 57" HDTV, and the difference between 1080p and 780p is very noticeable at that size, even to laypeople that don't even know what the resolutions mean.

Sorry guys, didn't mean to start a flame war. Obviously I saw something in the PS3 that made me buy it. There's a lot of great technology under the hood, some pretty decent exclusives out now, and some even better exclusives on the way. Plus, I'm really pumped for Home. Blu-ray is another reason, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to spend a bunch of money on blu ray movies, considering I already have a gigantic dvd collection.
Back on topic though, thanks to the op for pointing out this deal. As of now, it really is the best deal that I've found on a 60gb, especially if they are in the condition that everyone says they are in.

NO flame war here, I just came to my senses and realized I don't really NEED anything 'next gen' yet. I have my favorite game series of all time(GTA) on my fat PS2 and a couple remaining games for both my PS2 and Xbox and I dumped off a ton of games I wasn't playing anymore.
So, I'm happy, I made $$$$ and I realized I don't need the 'latest and greatest' just yet.

I'm using my PS3 as a media server, until, DMC 4 gets cheaper. If MS would release a patch to install the files on to the HDD like the PS3 version, then I would probably get that one instead because I just play the 360 more than any other system.
IAmTheCheapestGamer
02-10-2008, 05:38 AM
I've been playing my other games less and less, so for me the time was right to dump most of them. As for the next gen systems, I may end up waiting another year or two, since there's nothing I'd really play on any of them right now. Plus, I'm so used to paying $2-5 for games that paying even $20 for a game seems ludicrous.
I find myself just bored or annoyed by most of the games my friends sister has for her PS3. I made a character for Oblivion on her system, but once I saw how most guard NPCs are stronger than you and you can't just wreak havoc in the game to your hearts content without having those NPC's kick your ass in short order, I got bored with the idea of playing through Oblivion very quickly.
I liked the fact that you could switch between first and third person perspectives, since I despise all FP games for some reason, though in Oblivion the third person perspective seems to make landing hits just a smidge more difficult.
Either way, I'm still glad I figured this out now, rather than 2-3 months after splurging on a PS3 and going 'why the fuck did I buy this?'.

Got mine an Friday and loving it so far. If it weren't for the fact that there was a user profile on it, I wouldn't have even known it was used. The console is pristine, not a scratch on it and same for the controller.
Well, off to play some games, I'll post if I have any issues.....

My PS3 is in the media room right now, and we use it more for Blu-Rays than games. And I play a LOT of games on my PS3.

This is how I convinced myself to not get one right now. Think of all of the things you could otherwise spend the money on that you would be getting alot more enjoyment out of in the event you didn't buy many games for the PS3.
I did and that's what convinced me that I was insane for almost dropping 4 or 5 bills on something I don't truly NEED yet.

That's exactly what I meant. I actually prefer the HD-DVD format, but I can see the writing on the wall. This seemed to be the best value for me as I would like to be able to play my old library as well as watch BluRays. Guess I'll wait to see if they restock and for how much.

I ordered mine a week or so ago. Got it in today set it up and started to download the update. Came back a bit later and it was still stuck at the 14% downloaded that I had left it at. Tried pressing Circle to cancel it but it was unresponsive. Tried a few more times and then tried powering it down using the power button and that failed also. I let it sit a bit more and finally powered down using the power switch in the back.
Now upon startup all I get is a black screen with the startup sound. I can also hear the clicks going through the XMB menu so I know the system itself is working, just no video. I've tried every solution I've found online and nothing is working. I'll be contacting customer support in the morning, hopefully I can just get an exchange but, man, I don't want to have to pay to ship it back and wait a few more weeks to make good on my purchase.

When you power it on, try holding down the power button on the front of the PS3 and wait for it to beep again. Hopefully it was just a video setting problem, it's happened to me once.

I've tried, I've also tried with two other sets of cables (S-video, Composite, and Component my HDMI cable should be in tomorrow). I know you're not supposed to powe down but the update was setting for well over an hour and still at 14% (download not at the install yet). Being able to here the XMB menu makes me believe that the system is still functioning on the software side.
Edit: I have it updating via a usb drive right now using screens from Sony's website to get through the menu of the XMB using the clicking sounds. The Flash Drive's light is flickering showing that its being accessed so maybe that'll help/work.
Edit 2: It seems to have worked. Once I restarted I was greated by the press the PS Home button on your controller.

That doesn't mean it was necessarily a kiosk machine. Pretty much everyone else on here stated that the PS3s they received had gamer profile data on them, including some offensive names even, which I doubt stores would set their machines up with offensive profile names. Probably was just somebody that bought motorstorm and decided they didn't want a PS3 anymore, as sad as that may sound.

So I ordered mine last Thursday, no problems. I even ordered it before my tax money arrived because I wanted to get it before they ran out. It's due to arrive tomorrow, but I'm having a problem on the UPS site...

Is it possible it's still moving or is there a chance my package was lost?!?! I really hope not, because if they don't get any more I've lost my best chance at a 60GB PS3!!

If it's through USPS, then it's probably just a DC #, which doesn't show point-to-point tracking information.
Other tracking services sometimes don't update every day (although they usually do).
Either way, I wouldn't really freak out quite yet. It's a little early to think its lost.

Well, if UPS is anything like the USPS, then maybe they don't scan the tracking sticker at every stop along it's route or it may have been just put on a plane bound for the East Coast right from their warehouse. Either way, they seem pretty reliable on shipping, though as others have said, with a used system you don't get a warranty and for $350, I'd rather just get the one that'll get me a regular warranty.

Hopefully it arrives in great condition and I don't have any problems. This is the first time I've ever bought a used system... but I've seen the $500-$600 price tags on the 60GB everywhere else so I figured I should leap on this deal at a total of $393.95.
This is also the first time since the PS1 I've owned a Sony machine, I'll be the proud owner of all 3 next gen consoles now.

Hey im from Massachusetts too
Me three. Ordered mine on a Monday night and got mine the next Monday.
What are you talking about no warranty? You go on about shipping then randomly talk about not getting a warranty for $350... so that must mean you talking about a warranty on the system... The Sony warranty sucks anyway and I'd never waste my time with that garbage and sending it into them. If you buy your PS3 online use SquareTrade or get a 2 year from BB and just bring it right in if it breaks. "here my crap broke, give me another one"
Btw you wouldn't be paying $350 for anything like a 60GB, you would be paying $400 for an inferior 40GB or $500 for a 80GB. If you are willing to pay $150 more for an 80GB because it has a "1 year" from Sony and don't buy the extended warranty for 2 years then something is wrong with you imo.

Actually, I almost always buy the Product Replacement Plan on the major electronics I buy, it's like having the ability to go in and say 'I used this for 2 years, gimme a new one'. So believe me, I'm one of the first to say that people SHOULD get the PRP on larger purchases, since it's definitely worth it.
And, trust me, I've heard of the horror stories and had a friend who had them happen to them when sending in their PS2 for repairs. They got back the same system the first couple times, then Sony tried giving them a 'refurb' which didn't work, one that had a DRE, another which scratched discs and so on. Eventually, Sony had to finally just concede and ended up sending them a NEW PS2 due to all of the prior mess ups.

Just a little bit of info for everyone...Call your local Blockbuster with the Game Rush built in...I got my BRAND NEW 60 gg for $449...I got mine in Winter Park Florida and they had more if anyone else locally is interested...As a matter of fact, I called around and there were more around here locally before I went and picked up this one because they were closer. They are running $399 used and $449 new. Just trying to help out for those who missed out !!

Smart man! Yeah there isn't much I don't buy with a warranty anymore, it isn't worth the time, wait and hassle of sending it back to whatever company if it breaks when you can just bring it right to the store and walk out with a new one. And I hope for everyone’s sake that is waiting to get a PS3 that the next SKU has full BC, a DS3 and a good game. It seems Sony is poised for a MGS4 or GTA4 bundle but that’s probably being too optimistic. I just couldn't wait any longer to get one and was sick of waiting because of rumors I kept hearing.

See, I talked myself out of the PS3 I was looking at around here, since I only get into the action-y games, despise the turn based RPGs and 'stealth' games(like MGS has alot of it seems) and loathe most FPS games. So, for me, the next gen systems just don't have anything worthwhile right now.
Now, once the next GTA and Mercenaries game come out, my tune may change, but till then I'll be rockin' the PS2 with stuff like Genji and the GTA Double Pack for it(lol I'm up to 300 million in Vice City now :-X). Of course, now that I've unlocked the tank by grabbing my 90th hidden package, I may NEVER stop playing the GTA games on the PS2.

So don;t freak out, im guessing it's just UPS is slacking off lately now with updating their tracking site.
That's actually great to hear! Thanks a bunch. Hopefully I should have my system in the mail tomorrow!

No it's quite odd. It freezes on BR movies after 15 minutes or so of play and then when restarted freezes more often. I don't have a PS3 game to test but I think it would do the same. PS2 games work fine. I think I'm going to wipe everything and reinstall firmware to see if I can get it up and running and then I'll see about selling it. I upgraded because of this crappy problem.
IAmTheCheapestGamer
02-13-2008, 09:58 PM
Ahhhh ok, it was worth a shot though, since the 20gb would've been my first choice as far as BC models go. The BR freezing wouldn't concern me at all though, since I doubt I'd ever use it to play movies of any format, but the possible locking up on PS3 games would be a major issue.
Keep me informed, in the event you do get it back to 100% though. Thanks nonetheless.

Finally, they shipped it today, with a tracking number. I feel so gay. :bouncy::applause:
Glad to hear there were no problems. Congrats.
Also, to everyone that is concerned about a "bigger" version coming out, correct me if I'm wrong, but with the PS3 can't you just hook up an external hard drive of any size (unlike the 360, which doesn't allow this). I'm pretty sure I remember someone mentioning that as a big feature the PS3 had over the 360, maybe a PS3 owner could confirm that for us.
If that is the case, then I could care less how much hard drive space comes built in, as I can ultimately add more whenever I want (plus 60gb will be more than enough for me anyways...I'm still running 20gb on my 360) - however adding hardware backwards compatibility isn't exactly an option.

You also can upgrade the PS3's internal hard drive with essentially any 2.5" drive you can find.

Well, mine came in today! I was really surprised at the great condition of the system. Just some smudges here or there. And the controller was in perfect shape. I don't have any PS3 games just yet, but I tested out Snake Eater and it actually looks really really good in HDMI...guess that upscaling is really something! Plus, unlike the Wii when you play GC games, it doesn't stretch out the image, it's just got the black bars. Very nice.
Thanks a million to the TC for leading me to this great deal!! Time to go out and buy Uncharted, probably the only game I'll own until Metal Gear comes out.

I considered this deal for a while, but I ended up buying a new 80GB PS3 instead. I've had bad luck with electronics lately, and the 1 yr warranty is piece of mind.
From what I could find on BC, it's not as bad as some people make it out to be. I also already have a 60GB. This was basically a 2nd blu-ray player for another room. Besides, someone mentioned that if you use any of the upscaling or AA features of BC, it's running in software anyway.
Most stores were sold out of 80GB, with only 40GB models left.
Amazon has them for $499 shipped. If you do the recommendations/gold box trick, you can get 5% off, which makes it $475. Not too shabby for a brand new console. Plus, I had a $30 promo certificate from a previous Amazon deal. Grand total was about $445.

Yea, don't worry about it. My shipment tracking has been kind of weird too, but it does happen sometimes. However, the estimated arrival date has always been accurate on anything with UPS tracking that I've had in the past. I'm expecting mine any minute now.
I also just picked up the last copy of Warhawk w/headset for $39.99 at my local Target, which I found out about in another thread on here. The deal was marked YMMV, but if my Target had it, then it's most likely a deal everywhere, so all you new PS3 owners should look into that :).
UPDATE: Alright, so I got my PS3 in the mail finally...UPS delivered at the latest time possible (thanks UPS!...not). The system is in decent shape, but definitely doesn't look "new" like so many others said. Lots of light scratches and even some deep marks that I can't quite tell what they would be from towards the left-most side on top (if you're laying the PS3 horizontally). I guess I didn't expect it to be perfect, but I got excited when everyone said theirs looked like brand new - maybe I'm just extra picky. Other than that, it was packaged well (although UPS somehow managed to get a decent sized hole punched in the delivery box, which actually put a small hole/dent in the PS3 box, luckily there was no damage to the system from that, as far as I can tell). Upon starting up I noticed, aside from how extremely quiet this thing is, there was a "User 1" profile, but I didn't check to see if there were game saves, just did a quick system restore to clear out any old user info, no big deal. Also, no problems with getting a "wrong one"...I confirmed that this is in fact a 60gb model.
Setup was super easy, maybe because I'm so used to the PSP interface, or maybe the interface just really is that good? I even was able to use my Monster-brand PS2 component cables for the time being while I'm waiting for my $5 HDMI cable in the mail. What a slap in the face that Sony only includes composite cables with these. As far as value for the money, you're getting a TON here. Wi-Fi built in, Blu-ray player built in, a USB cable to charge your controller/play while it's charging, and the free online service (hey, doesn't Microsoft sell the play and charge kit separately?...and the Wi-fi adapter?...and the HD-DVD player?...and XBox Live?). I'm really pleased so far, now as long as the games are good ;). I'm currently installing the update for Warhawk, and I'll be playing as soon as that's finished.

I was the guy that was sent an 80GB instead of the 60GB. On Thursday I finally got it in, I was hoping a little sooner because one gamefunk rep told me it was being sent back expedited but it was actually ground via UPS. It's in pretty good condition. From afar it looks brand new, but if you look closely you can see some light scratches, nothing major though. It plays PSX, PS2 and PS3 games. I've performed a system update and everything seems to be functioning properly. I've played Uncharted for close to an hour with no problems.
Now I just need to find a couple of more games. I hope to hit up Target to see if I can snag a discounted Warhawk and Resistance. Haven't bought a Blu-ray movie yet though.
I'm still a 360 guy though. It just has more games, easier interface and I'd gladly pay for Live over the PSN Network. I just got the PS3 because well, it's the only next-gen console I don't have, plus titles like MGS4, FFXIII and the inevitable God of War 3 are enough to make me want the system.

ditto. I very much plan to get a PS3 soon but for the exclusives really, I feel like I'd get the multi platforms on the 360 unless it comes down to drastic load times. I also really want a Blu-ray player as it seems to be the format now. I got a BD movie already too lol Pirates At World's End =) Just gotta get together some cash and I may just get one from this site.

I'm definately a 360 guy too, but with the death of HD-DVD, and Metal Gear Solid 4 I'm caving in. Did a trade with Estarland and got Ratchet, Resistance, DMC4 for the PS3 (by the way all of the used games were in perfect condition).
Anyways, I still can't bite on the gamefunk deal although I've come close. I still can't get by the possible new SKU's coming out and not having a warranty.

The total was like $393.50. I did get a $10 discount because of the shipping screw up.
I am happy with the purchase as of now. Everything is in good condition and the system does what it's supposed to. The only game I have is Uncharted and it is pretty good. I'm mainly going to use the PS3 for its exclusive titles. I'm sticking with the 360 for multi-platform games, too.
I'll probably pick up Resistance, Warhawk and Heavenly Sword when I can find them for the right price. I'll eventually get Blu-ray movies when I can get them on the cheap.
I believe for the money I spent I got an excellent piece of hardware. Plus, I got the 60GB which is the one I really wanted because of the hardware emulation. I'd recommend springing for a cheap HDMI cable (if your TV supports it) to get the most visual bang out of the PS3.

No you don't, they will send you a prepaid shipping slip that you print out and tape over the one that was sent on your box. If the amount isn't enough to ship it when you take it to the post office pay the difference, contact customer service again and they will reimburse you the difference when your PS3 arrives at their warehouse. That's a shame, man. Their customer service seems fairly down to earth, considering one of their sales reps even posts here, so hopefully they'll be able to fix your problem quickly and painlessly.
Mine has been running beautifully so far (knock on wood). I even completed a work load with folding@home (which requires the ps3 to stay on overnight for about 8 hours) and played through several demos that I downloaded from the PSN. I notice frame rate drops in the Heavenly Sword demo, and some others, but I think that's just a problem with those games specifically. The system runs incredibly quiet, especially compared to my "jet engine" Xbox 360, and the online service is pretty nice, specifically on Warhawk, especially considering that it's a free service.

Damn kart007k, that sucks... I don't like hearing things like this with mine scheduled to arrive tomorrow. At least you found out early, my rule of thumb with any new hardware is to run it non-stop for as long as you can and do everything intensive you can think of so you stress test it, if it survives that then it's usually good to go. Hope everything works out for you and the customer support is good.
Well I follow the same method. Stretch its legs aprt as far as I can, but this system died in first half hour.
Oh on a new update, Gamefunk has a really good customer service. They responded with in ten minutes of my email to them. Hope I get a better system, me and my dad were waiting to play Oblivion.

Well, now I don't feel so bad for not grabbing a used system. Of course, if I bought it from Gamestop or another store known for taking in shit condition stuff, I'd feel even worse if it broke.
Mind you, out of all of the people from this thread who bought one, I've only seen maybe 3 or so bad stories.
No kidding on Gamestop taking in shit. I was at a mall GS last weekend and they had a stack of used, boxed PS2 for $80. One unit was unboxed for display purpose and I saw shit like residue clogging up the exhaust fan in the back. Who knows what shit you would find inside the unit. I'm not kidding about the shit like residue - it's some brownish thing that just looked like dried shit. I nearly had nightmare because that image stuck in my head.

Just received mine in the mail about 20 minutes ago, I'm currently installing the updates and messing with the settings. Going to stress test it once all that's done. System looked flawless, no scratches on the controller or the console and the only data on the HDD was a small Motorstorm save. No movie or game included (didn't think there would be one.).
I'll make an update late tonight after I'm done giving it a workout.
So far so good.

Couple of quick questions -
1. How much has everybody been paying for shipping?
2. For everybody that has ordered one, are they coming in with everything that they would have if bought new?
3. Related to #2 above, but do PS3s come with HDMI cables or do you have to buy those separate? How much do they cost if you do have to buy separate?

Just got mine and hooked it up. Everything seems to be in terrific condition. I'm downloading the updates now (man, do I miss 360 background downloading). I'll be testing out Blu Ray playback tonight and maybe a PSN game if I find something I like. I don't have any PS3 games yet, but maybe I'll give my old PS2 titles a spin. More details later.

1. $34.00 (Order placed 01/26/08)
2. Yes
3. HDMI cable is not shipped with PS3s. Only standard component cables are. Bought mine off of Ebay for $11.92 (2 pack - 6ft HDMI cable)

It's all updated and has been on since my last post, I've downloaded 2 videos (One 720p, one 1080p), 3 demos (have yet to play) and we watched Chicken Little on Blu-Ray. I'm going to run through the demos try a little God of War and watch Live Free or Die Hard Blu-Ray. That should be enough to see if it'll stick around for a while.

I've had mine since last Thursday and *knock on wood* — it works like a charm. It plays everything fine. The only thing I haven't tested is Blu-ray movies, but it plays PS3 Blu-ray discs fine. I'm halfway through Uncharted and it's an amazing game. The only thing that concerns me about the PS3 is the heat it puts off. Under the power button on the right side of the console it gets very warm. I've read that this is normal, but I still am paranoid about it. The PS3 is silent though, which is welcome because my Elite sounds like a jet engine. I'm on my third 360 and I just hope my warranty-less PS3 lasts.

Every "refurbished" game console I have purchased in the past (I've not purchased from gamefunk) has shown no evidence of being anything other than plain old used - often with saved games from the previous user still present and many times not in working condition.

Got mine in today. Overall, I'm pretty impressed with the condition of the PS3/Controller. Although they don't look like the ones pictured on the website, they're in very condition. The controller was in solid condition but you could tell it was used. The system on the other hand was in near immaculate condition and, the only save file that was on it was for Motorstorm. The box was a bit beat up (no handle) and, the UPC was removed. I'm very happy with my purchase and, I'm gonna try Folding it overnight to make sure it can handle it + long gaming sessions.
Thanks for the post OP. I'm very happy with my buy :D

I bought a used 360 from them which worked for a couple days before I got the 4 red rings. Nothing I did helped so I returned it for a full refund. The older Xbox 360s have more 'fragile' hardware so you're better off buying one of the newer Falcon models that have higher reliability.
Sony PS3s on the other hand have higher hardware reliability so I'd say go ahead and buy a used PS3 from them.

lol... this has nothing to do with the 360, all owners who've experienced the rrod know that. I've now read at least 3 people in this thread who've had something go wrong with the used system they purchased, the last just happend to convince me that this isn't the way I need to go about purchasing a ps3. Chill bro, no need to go on the defence. I'll get a brand new ps3.

It's a bit irrational to compare this to the 360 RRoD issues, there are people who have been through hell with the 360's failure rate. The bottom line is that you're purchasing a used PS3 here. Now I don't know about you, but there's plenty of people who have problems and will pawn them off on someone else and I highly doubt Gamefunk tests these machines thoroughly, just based on the amount of stock and time. Even if they did, no electronic equipment is foolproof. The fact remains, this is a purchase of a used console and while many people are very happy with their Gamefunk purchase, a handful have not. On another forum I'm a member of, a guy who got his PS3 for Xmas (80) failed this week and he was able to replace it the same day. The rate is much lower with the PS3 failing, but there are still plenty that fail.
I am getting my PS3 this week and I am getting a new one. The piece of mind of both the warranty/return policy and the lack of hassle without having to deal with shipping and that sort of thing is worth the extra money. Obviously, if you're more budget minded, this Gamefunk deal is a bit easier to swallow, but a new system > used system any day of the week, especially when you dont know the history of the machine you're getting in terms of use. An extra 100 bucks is a small price to pay than dealing with the stress of shipping and waiting should something go wrong.
And you quote 5 or 6 people, while thats true for this forum, I bet theres plenty of Gamefunk customers who are not CAGs that may have had a failed machine. I respect the fact that Gamefunk tries to attend to customer service, but you can't blame anyone that wants a new machine over a used one. Buying used is always a risk, no matter how relatively low the risk is.
This is a great deal, I'm not trying to piss in anyone's coffee, but there are segments of us who believe that a new console is worth the extra coin and the peace of mind. I debated for days on it, but I cant bring myself to do it.

An extra 100 bucks is a small price to pay than dealing with the stress of shipping and waiting should something go wrong. The only issue is that the difference here isn't just about saving money. It's also about getting the superior console. Finding new 20/60GB units is not easy, and as each day passes, the chances become less and less likely. So, people are willing to take the risk in order to save money AND get the better product. A risk worth taking in many eyes.
I've never been a fan of buying used electronics to save some money. I prefer having that piece of mind, like you. But if I were in this situation (I already got my 60GB PS3 in January of last year), I might actually consider going against my better judgment.

Well sure, it depends on what you value when you go for the buy. The BC argument is in the eye of the beholder and what they want out of their console. Personally, I'd like a 60, but I still have a PS2 that is collecting dust and I'm lucky in the sense that I know of a place locally that still has a few 60s on the shelf. If someone values hardware BC and can't find a new 60 than it puts more leverage into taking this risk. It's a case by case basis. The Gamefunk deal is still lower priced than a brand new 40 SKU as well. The saving money argument does carry with some people in this regard. For me, the extra 100 bucks I'd spend on a new 60 is worth the piece of mind than dealing with an online retailer compared to B&M.

Yes, obviously, which is why I said save money and get the superior console. I was merely pointing out that this isn't just a case of saving money, for the most part. Not everyone has immediate access to a 60GB model.
Well gamefunk offer 90 days warranty, about 60 days more than most stores. sending the system back is only an disadvantage for online store, same problem a new system amazon would have. i would think if you system runs fine for months, it should run fine for the next 9 months.
gamefunk also has respectable feedback on ebay and amazon.
but if you can find new 60gb and money is not a problem, by all means get what you want

I understand that, but regardless of the reasoning for anyone taking this deal, there are others who dont value the BC argument as highly as they do other aspects to this deal, which is my point. I agree that the majority of people here are likely looking for the superior console, but the money aspect surely plays into some peoples minds, and superior is still in the eye of the beholder, especially if you've given the past generation up, Im personally not even 100% sold on the 60 yet and will decide on Monday when I go shop. There was one dude in this thread a few weeks ago that was basically fighting with himself whether to get it or not simply because of the price and his budget.
Theres sides to each "argument", but the ones that value a new console for whatever reason are not wrong in their choice, neither are the ones who bite on this deal. If I was in the position where I could not find a 60 and I was dead set on a 60, this would be easier to swallow, but I still can't say for certain I'd do it.

That was probably me and I'm kind of glad I waited now, with the problems that seem to be popping up with some peoples systems. Of course, I'm not even 100% sure I want the full BC now, but knowing my luck(I bought a PS1 2-3 weeks before they dropped to $99 from $129 or so), I'd buy one and that next week or the week after it'd drop in price. THAT is the main thing stopping me, knowing the unpredictability of price drops.
Mind you, I'm also kind of hoping for another disgruntled gf of some gamer to post their collection online for a steal of a deal like the one woman posted her bf's PS2 and 40+ games online for $100 about 6 months ago. I was too late to try and grab it, due to my indecisiveness, but I won't be this time if it happens to be a PS3 for sale for cheap.

If price drops are your main concern at least in regards to new systems, most major retailers will give you whatever you paid over that amount when the price drop happens if it occurs in a certain period of time. I wouldnt expect a price drop for the PS3 anytime relatively soon especially now that GDC has passed without any mention, even if/when they announce the 120 SKU. They have momentum lately with Blu-Ray "winning". I don't see a significant PS3 price drop until fall really. If it does fall in the interim it will be down to $379 off of the 40 SKU and even that is up in the air because of PS3 sales. Kotaku had a story on this a few days ago.

In regards to this deal, Gamefunk has shown they're going to go up before they go down. Makes sense since the 60 is a dead SKU.
Unless your deadset against having a ps2 and ps3 because of space constraints why not just pick up a 40gb cheap and a ps2. I have seen plenty of ps2's used for 50 on cl and they ussually come with a couple controllers and games. You just gotta check often and act quick. The other thing is do 1 of the sony card deals on a 40 gb. Net 300+tax for the console. Personally I would do the 1 where you can buy it anywhere and get the credit. This offer I would apply and get the card and wait for the best deal possibly with some extras. There is a big thread on sd about this check there for more info.

This is actually a great deal now. From the way I read it:
1.Get the card now from 1st posted link
2.register for sony rewards
3.Buy your ps3 at authorized retailer
4.Recieve credit for $100 after 1st bill or whatever the terms state in t&c
5.Spend whatever amount needed above this purchase amount to bring total to $500 by 3-31-08 and earn 10000 rewards points =$100 in sony rewards redeemable on their site. (only thing I am not certain of is if your ps3 was 350 would you spend 150 or 250 more to get the rewards...because of the statement credit....either way not a big deal as other purchases can be anywhere..ie groceries, gas, etc)
Hope this helps and if posted already sorry...if not all in 1 spot maybe we should put a thread just with this info all in 1 place together.

I wish I knew where to go locally to buy a 60GB. They just seem, gone.

Kinda forgot about that. Then in that case do what I posted on a leftover 80gb bundle. Pretty good for 436ish with tax.

In for one today. Couple Questions to our gamefunk rep: Are you a Sony authorized retailer? And also, what is the condition of the units put on sale Sunday? The main page says excellent, the description says Good. Either way, I'm sure it will be adequate. Much appreciated!

The upscaling appears to just blur everything (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/793/793775p1.html). A patch at some point to render PS2/PS1 games at higher res, like a PC emulator, would be nice.

I bought a used PS3 from a local game crazy and got 90 days + a year warranty on it. It was $450 and the warranty was $70. But I really wanted a 60GB PS3, I will send my Gamefunk PS3 back next week and get a refund and hopefully they'll mail back the Warhawk stuck in it. I will still shop at Gamefunk but buying used hw from some place I can't drive to is over for me.

That's a really sweet deal. Would Amazon count as a Sony-authorized dealer?
Amazon does count, but they only have the 40GB model in stock. I got the card last week, with the intent to use it if anything was announced at GDC. Nothing was, and BB didn't have any 80GB models left, so here I am. SD is reporting that this does work at any retailer, so long as the purchase is over 299. Although, I'm sure it couldn't hurt if Gamefunk was authorized to sell Sony product.
I will use either my upscaling receiver or the PS3. I'll have to see which does a better job. Right now I have the PS2 upscaled to 1080p over component, and while there is some aliasing (bound to happen), it looks much better than straight 480p.

I got the impression it's really not that limited. Granted, it's not as good as the 20/60GB models, but it's pretty decent all around.

That was probably me that swiped the last 80GB model :-D
My 80GB PS3 from Amazon should be here tomorrow. I can't believe how quickly they're disappearing from retail.

I went on Craigslist, and hopefully tomorrow, I too can be a PS3 60GB owner. If HD-DVD wasn't around, I probably would have moved way back when, stupid format wars. For $450 with a extra controller it ain't ALL bad.

Does anyone know if the PS2 upscaling allow it to stretch/fit on a 16:9 HDTV, if you had a regular ps2 with component on Widescreen, there would still be bars on the left and right(Probaly because of overscan/underscan).

Good question. I don't think it does it natively, but you can still use the stretch modes of the TV to fill the screen. Personally, I like the native format even if it's 4:3, otherwise everything looks squished.

It's the same, you'll get the black bars on the left/right on any good HDTV that dosen't have an overscan problem. So at least you can be happy your TV dosen't need overscan fixed lol.
Update:
I've been playing my PS3 since I got it at least 3 hours a day, I'm almost finished God of War (first time playing it.) and about half way through Rachet & Clank Future Weapons and every thing's been running smoothly. I've also watched 2 Blu-Ray movies and a bunch of DVDs and streamed media files on the network. I think this one is a-ok and should last a good while.

Just thought I would throw my experience in. Picked up a PS3 at GameFunk.com on Feb 19th and it arrive today. Here is a link to some pics:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/14776009@N02/sets/72157603988770799/
System was listed as "Good Condition" but I would go as far to say that it's "Like New". Box is a bit beat up, minor scratch on side, everything else wiped off with a cloth. BONUS: I was surprised to see a copy of MotorStorm packed in. At first I thought they got me with a 80GB model but I've hooked it up and it does indeed appear to be a 60GB model (55GB usable).
I've only been able to turn it on to check the HD, no games or movies yet. A little bit of me still thinks I got duped with a 80GB model with the HD replaced :-P Will report back later tonight. Oh, paid $367.95 + 34.00 shipping for a total of $401.95
