WOW if only it was for $250. Might as well buy a 40GB PS3 FOR $300 OR JUST Shell ouT an extra $50 for a new 60GBOR 80GB.

Huh? The 40GB PS3 is $400, while the 80GB is $500. This is a pretty good deal for someone who wants the highest possible BC rate.

60gb is a million times better than the 40gb. The 40gb doesn't even have backwards compatibility. Paying less for a hell of a lot more? Best buy for sure.

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait...this isn't my Batman glass. And does the 60GB have backwards compatibility? I can't seem to find the answer anywhere?

Good price. I just don't trust used when buying something for $350. Personal preference.

Yes it does. And it's even better then the 80GB BC because instead of emulation the 60GB pretty much has a PS2 stuffed inside it.

I have the 40GB and I prefer it. I had the 60GB and sold that space heater. I could barely survive the heat in a room with that thing. I live in Florida and I don't need a machine pumping out 95 degree exhaust out the back, not to mention it was more then loud enough to disturb me during a blu-ray movie. 40 GB is actually silent in comparison.

I find it hard to believe that the exhaust from a gaming console or any computer would have a major impact on the overall temperature of a room. Unless you stood directly behind the PS3 was it on, I can't see how the heat bothered you. And the lound sound during the Blu-ray playback is not an issue I have discovered with my 60GB version. If anything, it sounds like something could have been wrong with your system.

I feel the same way. My two 40 Gigs run deathly silent and the vented air isn't even warm at all. My previous 3 60 Gigs would loudlyl blow hot air after just an average of 20 minutes of use.

bigdaddybruce44

Hardware BC would mean that certain components of the older console are integrated into the newer system, so that it would be pretty much like playing the games on the older console's physical hardware. Software BC is when there is not older hardware present, so the system needs to emulate the games. In the case of the PS3, the older models have the Emotion Engine CPU, whereas the newer ones have had it removed, in order to cut costs.

Hardware BC is not 100% perfect, but it's pretty close. The original software BC list was around 70%, I believe, but has risen via firmware updates. According to Sony, thougth, their focus is shifting away from BC, evident in the fact that the 40GB model only plays PS games, and towards more original content for the PS3.

I'm slow today... So, that means?

The 20gb and the 60gb are full backward compatible due to the PS2 emotion and synthisyzer chips actually being inside of them (basically a PS2 is inside the PS3) The 80gb only uses software to run the older games and isn't compatible with about 30% of them Sony says. The 40gb has no backwards compatibility. Sony was losing so much money by making the 60gb they took it off the market.

I also find it odd that peoples PS3s were loud, I have a 60gb and wouldn't know it was on if the lights weren't there.

12-29-2007, 06:03 PM
I find it funny that they have two 60GB offers. One for 349.95 and then one with a "FREE" Blu Ray Movie (which is the pack-in Talladega Nights) for 369.95

goomba478
12-29-2007, 06:05 PM
I also thought that was rather funny (and stupid) Inf^Shini...obviously I didn't go for the "Free" movie bundle as the extra $20 certainly doesn't seem worth it. It also tells me that it was a launch system which in theory means it's slightly older than the ones without the pack-in movie as well. At least that's how I saw it.

The 60 GB ones are indeed loud and have excessive heat (like running 3-4 computers in a confined room) output. There best thing is the you get a decent sized HD and BC. Two musts in my book for that system with nothing on it. Even though they're loud, throw on a few surround speakers and you should be fine.

Looks good. Let us know when you test out games on it.

I recently purchased one on ebay and I'm awaiting shipping, I paid a little less and got a Sony HDMI cable and an extra controller, I'm a little nervous but I can't wait to see it and test it out to see if I truly got a great deal.

hi i received mine around 2 weeks ago, so far so good, everything is perfect and i couldnt be happier. They covered the UPC with a big white sticker, but with alot of patience and a careful hand you can remove it, but the receipt they send specifically says USED PS3.

goomba478
01-17-2008, 03:58 AM
Yeah it's definitely used, but in great shape over all. I just tested remote play and it worked flawlessly as did the media streaming of DIVX and WMV video. Needless to say I'm impressed. Despite the fact that there are maybe only 2-3 games I'm interested on the PS3, Remote Play will allow me to catch up on my HUGE backlog of PS1 games. I just hope eventually they add PS2 Remote Play for the 60GB / 20GB / 80GB owners...that'd be great ^_^

I'd roll the dice. You have 30 days to discover any serious issues. Beyond that, the PS3 does not appear to have a high rate of failure (at least, not nearly as bad the 360), so you should be all right without an extended warranty.

The UPC was not removed but it was covered with a thin white label. As another member said, you could easily remove this if you were steady and careful (it's just a sticker essentially). I'm not sure the reason for covering it but in any case it's not hard to do.

Also, as far as reliability issues, it's true that the PS3 has had very good reliability in the market over all. I've heard of PS2's failing like crazy when they first launched but I bought one in 2000 at launch and never had any issues with it, so I guess I just got lucky. Same with my PSP...I didn't have any dead pixels or any problems, so perhaps I've just gotten lucky. In any case thanks for reading :) I'll have more up soon.

for what it's worth i haven't had any problems with my PS2 or psp. i got the psp at launch and the ps2 i got 3 or 4 months after launch.

xbox360 on the hand is a piece of shit that would get a scratched disc error or just freeze even when the game disc is pristine. it reall sucks, especially after i've spent over an hour running around shenmue 2 doin detective work. i gave up cuz i was too lazy to have to go through that hour again. although i am lucky enough to say i haven't had the ring of death. i had 1 light go on one time awhile back. scared the shit outta me.

Then get some HVAC installed, and stop living in the desert.

I'm all for a little exaggeration now and again to get a point across, but that's retarded. I can stand a foot in front of my 360, that isn't the most well-ventilated in the world, and can feel the temp maybe 2-3 degrees above ambient. But just in that 1 foot circle.

I got a 60gb a few weeks ago, refurbished. Came with a 90 day warranty.

The thing is a little on the loud side and does run hot, but most, if not all, 60gb PS3s do. They get a little hotter than the X360 (at least mine) but the noise is fan-oriented (you can hear them kicking into high gear, though the sound of the games will drown it out pretty easily) and not the loud ass DVD Drive sound. Otherwise, really happy w/ the purchase (paid $400 after shipping and tax). Alas, I got mine through dealtree/dealadeal. Great condition, warranty, fast delivery, works with everything I throw at it = me happy.

Great little machine. Still not up to par w/ the 360 in terms of flatout gaming, but an overall solid device.

Yup the Xbox 360 was my first next gen system too (if you don't count the Wii, which a lot of people say is "new gen"). The PS3 has a lot of promise ... once we get MGS4 and FF13 and others it'll probably seem more promising. Still for now I'll be very happy with my Remote Play thank you very much ^_^

I'm not sure if this is still the case, buy I know that Best Buy let you purchase a warranty plan on items that you did not buy from them. They just need the serial # on the item. Again, I'm not sure if this is still the case, but think of it this way - extended warranties nearly complete profit for the store because 90% of them go unused once purchased.

I have a 60gb ps3. It seems to have two fan speeds, low and high. Its low normally and kicks into high after playing a game for 15min or so. On low I can't really hear it running from 3 feet away. On high I can hear it but it is not all that loud. (Quieter than my PS2 fat, xbox1). The bluray drive you can hear but is still very quiet. Honestly its one of the quiestest consoles I've onwned since the Genesis/NES eras. (caveot the noise of the ps3 may be covered up by my External HD I use for my Tivo)

I have heard of people having loud ps3 60G. This is actually a bug. (Some of them are stuck in high mode all the time) I've heard of people getting them fixed or replaced by Sony.

If you've just bougth a PS3 I suggest. "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" that game and Call of Duty 4 were my game of the year. Warhawk is also a good choice but only if you like online multiplayer, it has no single player component.

Regarding Uncharted, I could not agree more. Anyone who owns a PS3 should own Uncharted as well. I usually revisit games I've beaten after a while, but Uncharted was the first one I began replaying immediately after I got to the end.

Also, thanks for the info about the "stuck on high mode" bug. I'll keep it in mind if I'm ever able to pick up a 60 to replace my 40.

Decided to bite the bullet and buy one now. I think I made the right choice (was going to wait until later in the year, but the 60gb models will be near-impossible to find then and this was an amazing deal). Lets just hope it's in as good condition as goomba's was.

Strange, my order status page is showing $0 for tax and shipping as well.

i bought a 60gb system from them a few months ago. everything was packaged very nicely in the orignal box. there was a weird white dust on the system, despite being packaged in a bag inside the box, but i've been playing it for 2 months now with no problems.

Great, if I knew they were here in LA I would have driven over and picked the thing up myself >_<

Anyway, mine arrived this afternoon, and it's working great! There are some minor scratches that you would expect of a used console, but they aren't actually noticeable unless the thing is right in front of your face. Was also some weird white stuff (almost seemed like putty) around the Playstation 3 lettering and on the edge where the chrome-colored plate meets the plastic, but a toothpick scraped it right out. Everything was well packaged. I'm happy with the purchase :)

You're very welcome chicagoz. Actually it really does play just like new. I have tested it with remote play now, the web browser, the Playstation Network, etc. Ironically the only thing I have done with it though so far is play PS1 games so I think it's time I start to look for some PS3 games :) I heard Motorstorm is fun but doesn't have a ton of replay value...though with the new level packs out this week I guess that could change. Same with Warhawk, though I'm not really a big online gamer so I'm not sure if it's right for me. I loved the original though ^_^

Any suggestions as to what accessories to buy? I'm thinking just the HDMI cables and PS2/PSX memory stick adapter. My bluetooth/usb headsets should already work, right? For games, I'm just thinking Uncharted and CoD 4 right now. Crap, I need money.

I was in a similar situation from the PS3 I got from the amazonwarehouse.com from a while back. As long as you've still got your invoice, just call up Sony and they'll replace the unit. The whole process took about a week and a half between them shipping the coffin and getting the new unit. Plus the unit they sent me was in pristine condition and I've been extremely happy with it so far.

The seller threw the unit in a large box and left it loose, no padding, well there was some but in no way was it protecting the unit, sent it media mail instead of USPS Priority as the auction stated.
I already tried contacting the seller to no avail...his response "it didnt work? i tested before i sent it off and it was fine. i dont get it??"

I escalated through PayPal. I paid with a credit card and I was advised by my friends to just call up my CC company and have them deal with it, so I did. I won't be sending this POS back to him at my expense.

I wanted to put this out there. I bought a PS3 from the site after reading about it on here, and it worked out fine. I ordered it Thursday night, they shipped it Friday, and it got here on Monday.

The unit is in perfect condition. No scratches or flaws. The only sign it is used is the User Id on the hard drive of "AAA." Otherwise the hard drive is clean. All accessories included and clean. Box in good condition. Even had the UPC code.

If they ever had any future deals on the site I liked, I wouldn't hesitate to order from them (except since they're in CA too, I get charged the sales tax -- ugh!).

Edit: Forgot to mention this. I don't have any PS3 games or Blu-ray movies, but I tested PS2 games and regular DVDs and everything worked fine. Plus I downloaded a PS3 demo and though it is SLOW as HELL it worked well once it finally downloaded.

That sucks. Thats why I dont go on eBay to buy systems. Its too good to be true and you have to be very very careful.

At times, I rather pay retail price then take the risk of getting a DOA and potential of losing money.

Depends on wheter you care about the full BC capabilities of the 60GB. If you don't mind that the 80GB has limited BC and its done through emulation then I'd say you made out pretty damn good.

Our site is fairly new and we're still working on adding things. Right now there is not an option to pay with Paypal at our gamefunk.com site, but I've gotten several customer emails with this question and it's something we're working on right now. So check back with us next week as this is something that is high priority for us.

Edit 2: I bit, I figured even though I'm not getting motorstorm or the 5 free blu rays (which I probably won't watch anywho) I can now sell my PS2 and recoup a lot of the cost without worry about crappy things happening during my ps2 games. Off to ebay now.

on your ebay auctions, there is an option of purchasing a squaretrade warranty at 30% off. is this possible when purchasing from your website? i just want the peace of mind just in case after 30 days. :) thanks!

PS: much appreciation for posting here! it shows that your company is legit and support your customers after the sale. this will lead to more referrals for your company as word spreads based on this. when i first saw your site, i was hesitant but based on feedback here and you being a gamefunk representative, i feel comfortable of purchasing from you. continue the great service as this will draw more to your site!

I received mine via UPS yesterday. At first, I was a little concerned because I heard something "loose" in the box. I opened the exterior box to find it was the Blu-Ray disc (in its holder) just sliding around. Given the limited room for movement, there was no risk of damage, but hearing something loose is always scary. No harm, no foul.

The box was worn and was clearly "used", which was no great surprise considering it is advertised as used! I opened the unit up and everything was packed well. The manuals and such were a bit worn, but had apparently been re-sealed in plastic, etc. All of the cords were there. As an aside, why is a system advertised as the next gen in 1080P etc etc ... and then comes bundled with old analog cables? Not a gamefunk complaint, just a question.

The unit was in great condition. It clearly had some wear and minor scratches/scuffs. After I cleaned it up a little more, it looked really good. It did have some of that mysterious white stuff along the silver areas, but that came right off. It must be something they use to reseal after doing refurbish work or checking out the used unit?

In any case, it was Friday and Friday always has 20,000 other obligations besides playing video games. In order to avoid an attack by "Angry Wife of Doom", I placed the PS3 aside and will plug it in later today. I will post how that goes.

I will hold off on over-praise for gamefunk until I see how it works, but to this point I will say: Product is exteriorly as advertised, shipping occurred on the first business day after I ordered it and shipping was timely by UPS. All good things.

I am so ridiculously close to purchasing one from GameFunk. I think I am going to see if anything happens Monday, then go from there. The only thing holding me back is the potential (but unlikely) price drop of the 40GB and possible clearance of the 80GB since it is going out of production (at least temporarily).

That and I need to do my taxes first =p

You can get a memory card adapter ($10 - $15) and copy all your old saves onto the PS3 HDD. I would recommend borrowing one from a friend, or going half on it. When you use it to get all your saves over, it's pretty much useless from that point on.

Finally hooked my 60GB from Gamefunk up this evening. Everything appears to be fully functional. I am using HDMI and the picture is great (as one would suspect). Had to cleanup some random stuff from the interface from the prior owner, but otherwise smooth as silk.

No complaints so far.

Motorstorm + Controller are $50 each and the cable is $20. So your pretty much getting the system for $430 and its brand new right? Pretty good compared to paying $499.99 for just the system at Target or where ever that happens to still have a 60gb model.

This was the Sams Club at Robinson Township (or North Fayette maybe, the one by the airport) in Western PA.

It had already been marked down once (from like $650), maybe if they sit around the price will drop even lower. They had tons of the big cards that said what you got and "take to register to purchase".

Today's PS3 SKU rumor was not what I was hoping to hear, so I pulled the trigger on this deal.

No mention of backwards compatibility in the rumored 120-160GB $500 pricepoint SKU at all yet, and I want to still play PS2 games on the PS3.

I was cautious in case of inventory clearing 80GB prices, but I doubt they would be cheaper than the $394 I just paid. Not to mention hardware emulation ftw.

Happy hunting

mary,

on your ebay auctions, there is an option of purchasing a squaretrade warranty at 30% off. is this possible when purchasing from your website? i just want the peace of mind just in case after 30 days.

First of all.. Thank you :)

Also, we just started offering squaretrade warranties w/ or ebay purchases and so we're still testing the waters with it. If it works out well, we might consider extending it to our website... but it's still up in the air right now.

these seem to be selling at a brisk rate - I'd reckon gamefunk can raise their price another $40 or so and these will still fly off the shelves

also, gamefunk gets a % of every squaretrade warranty they sell through ebay, and you CAN buy squaretrade warranties directly from squaretrade.com on ANY purchase, not just an ebay purchase.

in some cases the warranty is actually cheaper when purchased directly via squaretrade.com site.

here are some coupons that may discount your warranty further when you buy directly from squaretrade.com (found through google, might be expired)

TY1RP30 - 30% off
TENFTEN 10% off
TY4FN7S - 30% off

EDIT: just tried it, Plan for $359 console is $42.99 for one year

TY4FN7S works, and brings it down to $30.99 for one year, or $45.49 for two years

Is it possible to purchase an extended warranty from Sony? I'm just a little weary of buying approximately $400 electronics used.

Currently Sony doesn't offer any kind of extended warranty for the PS3. It's kind of funny but they offer extended warranties for nearly every other piece of electronics they manufacture often up to 5 years past the 1 year warranty new in box.

i was wondering about this too... any cag's have stories about sony's policy/pricing on repairs as well?

Only new PS3 systems carry a year warranty from Sony with receipt (they will ask for a receipt for any in-warranty repair unlike microsoft). If you need a repair out of warranty or for a used PS3 system Sony charges a flat rate of $150.

I was scheduled to get my system Friday but cuz the UPS guy is a jerk, I finally got it today.

Since it is a used system, the original box is beat up, and actually kinda bad. I did get worried. But the system is flawless. No scratches I can see. And it only has a tiny bit of that white residue around the chrome. It still has the UPC on the box, with a Costco Item number sticker on it, also :)

A word of warning. Mine still had the old user name on it. "Big Dong." It didn't offend me. I thought it was funny. But I don't think it would have been funny if a mother bought this for their young kid and saw that. If you're buying one for someone else, maybe hooking it up to check it first might be an option. LOL

Downloaded Gran Turismo from the Playstation store, played the PS2 game SMT: Nocturne, and the blu-ray movie Superbad. All played without a hitch. Gamefunk has another satisfied customer.

ditto about the price hike. I wont expect free ship ever from an ebay powerseller, but some sort of discount for being so close would have been cool, shipping things fedex or ups ground in state is much much cheaper than otherwise. But i digress.

As for the tax, i cant complain, i mean if I went to a real store, i would pay tax. I guess amazon or ebay wouldnt charge the tax tho.

Just like any retail stores, if they have locations in your state, they have to charge tax unless you're a site like buy.com or amazon. Places charge tax for income tax purposes. Order something from an Amazon merchant that lives in the same state as you and they'll charge you tax but order from Amazon themselves, they wont.

Ebay is the same thing. Order from a seller that resides in the same state as you, they'll charge you shipping and tax (tax if they are a business). Shipping is probably a flat rate

A flat rate shipping as in what they are charging every buyer no matter where it is being shipped to.

Anyone who just got a 60 gb, do you notice a lot of hot air coming from it, just wondering, sure it's nothing abnormal since I've heard it puts out a lot of heat but anyone else notice it.

We just added 10 more units to the inventory if anyone's still interested.

FYI, right now I've still got the prices set at $359.00, but our vendor is threatening to bump their cost a little more due to the demand, so our next batch may not be listed as low, but we'll still definitely keep it reasonable.

Thanks,
Mary

I just got mine yesterday. The unit is in great shape. It didn't come with the copy of Taledega Nights it was supposed to, but Gamefunk shipped it to me within 12 hours of my emailing them, so I can't complain too much. One weird thing: the manual had a used envelope stuck in it, I assume from the previous owner. Who the hell would put a used envelope in a PS3 instruction manual?

To whoever asked above, mine generates a lot of heat too. It's extremely quiet compared to my 360, though.

I got mine two days ago and it seems just fine. Looks like shit (worse than the 360) on standard definition unfortunately, but that's my only option as VGA is borked thanks to retardo HDCP.

Anyway, there was some old data on it so I assume it was used and not refurbished.

It puts out an enormous amount of hot air, much more than the 360, really it feels like a weak hair dryer almost. Probably has better airflow is all, still it's a little upsetting to begin with.

Got my system yesterday, some initial impressions.

First off the system is in fantastic shape. The controller, not so much. It had a bunch of light scratches on the button side. Doesn't bother me at all during gameplay, so no big deal really. Plus I'll probably just a get a DS3 once those are released.

I connected via HDMI, and couldn't get a picture at first. I had read about doing a system reset by holding down the power button. I did just that, and the picture showed up fine. A couple button presses later it was set in 1080p.

Setting up the wireless was a breeze. Once I did that, I setup a PSN account. Navigating the store was decent enough, I went and downloaded the GT Demo, along with MK2, and Super Stardust HD. All games downloaded, installed, and worked just fine. I also tested out a PS1 game, that worked perfectly, the upconverstion didnt really make it look any better, but I really didnt expect much. I'll probably try out a PS2 game later tonight.

I dont have any PS3 games or Bluray movies to test just yet.

All in all I'm quite happy with the purchase.

translation: "we want to milk as much as we can out of this deal! you guys are buying them up like lemmings and we're happy to oblige" :)

as stated earlier, you can bump the price $40 and people will still be happy to pay - but don't lie about your vendor raising the price - you're raising the price yourself, and if you're not refurbing the sytems yourself, then your "vendor" is probably giving you a larger discount for your next order, since you likely increased your quantity request as you can't sell them fast enough.

don't be ashamed to be a capitalist.

All that said, I'm a little curious about the ebay feedback. it seems that when an item is fine, no one complains, but when there's an issue, gamefunk basically has zero customer service. Lots of negative feedback stating that attempts to contact gamefunk are never reciprocated

How does transfering games/hard drives work? I might buy this for the better backwards compatibility but I don't want to lose anything on my 80 GB one.

My guess is that it'll involve the PS2 memory card adapter. I have it, but I haven't attempted moving between PS3s. It should technically be the same process.

Mine arrived Friday as expected. It is in excellent condition, and I probably would have believed it was new if you told me. There is only one small scratch on the top left of the PS3 that I can find. The accessories are virtually brand new.

The box had some typical wear, but did include the UPC. I'm sending it off for the 5 free blu-ray movies, but it may be denied since the receipt is not from the state I live in (read the fine print).

Final Fantasy XII looked horrible before the system update. After I downloaded the update and turned on the upscaling/smoothing options, it looked significantly better than it did on a PS2 (on a 720p TV). Odin Sphere also looks amazing.

I downloaded Ratched and Clank, Uncharted, Folklore, and Armored Core 4. Folklore and AC4 were pretty horrible. Uncharted was good. Ratchet and Clank is jaw-dropping.

I was going to pick up Paprika on Blu-Ray, but I can't find it at a B&M so I am just going to order it.

The quality of purchase is probably dependent on the previous owner, but for me this was a steal.

That same state requirement makes no sense. What about Amazon purchasers, for example?

I got mine on friday, and good god the thing is flawless. i went over it and there is not a mark on it. the controller however is a little worn on the back, but as other people have mentioned it will be a 2nd player controller once i get a DS3.

the box has the UPC but there is a sticker over it, which i will just heat off with a blow dryer. i'm hoping the 5 blu ray deal will work. i didnt get a physical receipt, only a packing slip, so i will print the invoice off the website which doesn't even say what state its from.

overall very happy with the experience and i would recommend gamefunk to someone, at least on this specific deal.

seriously, and if they really want to get technical the receipt will emanate from my printer.

Looks like the BR rebate deal expired on 1/31, so new purchasers should bear that in mind.

I got mine on Friday as expected and, like every one else, mine was in excellent condition. It plays PSX, PS2 and PS3 games. The problem is, when I check the system's memory it says I have 64/75(74)GB free. This tells me it's an 80GB. It came packaged in a 60GB box.

I've e-mailed gamefunk, but since it's the weekend I haven't gotten a reply yet. Just a word of advice to others that bought one, check your available space on the HDD.

I'm hoping that they fix this quickly and painlessly.

Received mine on Wednesday and the exterior is flawless. However my system freezes up after 10 minutes of use. Sometimes it freezes immediately upon startup. Customer support at gamefunk was very responsive and I got my return label on Thursday. I was thinking about doing an exchange but I'm a little weary now with buying used. So I ended up buying a new system and returned this one for a refund.

No complaints so far with the PS3 I received on Friday. I had an extra HDMI cable so watching videos and playing demos on 1080p was awesome. The exterior was clean and did not look used unless you looked very closely and saw regular wear/tear/scratches on it. Now I just need Unchartered or Heavenly Sword or Assasins Creed to ship from my Gamefly queue. Though I'll get a chance to try out Naruto Chronicles (PS2) on it on Monday.

Uncharted/Devil May Cry 4 demos were great. I love how I can go online on the internet browser and dowload media/themes to the hard drive. Downloaded TVersity on my PC and now I'm media streaming to my PS3. Just wish the PS3 interface was more intuitive like the XBox 360's but PSN is free so one can't complain.

I've thought the same thing. Is there a way to check to see if a PS3 has the EE without voiding the warranty? It would be great if it is the 60GB system with the 80GB HDD. But somehow, I think they just sent me the wrong one.

Check this thread and try some game that works with 60gb and don't work with 80gb.

Thanks for the link. As I feared, it is actually an 80GB. So, I'll anxiously await their e-mail.
