I just watched the vids available on IGN, and I have got to say I'm very excited about this game. It looks like it will play like the old school MMX series (before it turned into a heaping pile of shit *cough*X7*cough*). Speaking of X7, apparantly there will be no 3D (read: not side scrolling) levels in X8. Woo!

Check out the videos and then post your thoughts.

Wait, you mean side scrolling levels done in 3d?

Watched the Axl one. Not impressed, the animation is too reminiscent of the stiff MMNT for the GC. Not necessarily something that would make it a bad game, but every MM game they move to 3D seems to lose a certain something visually. Like the characters lose... character... or something.
Gameplay-wise, the hovering that Axl was doing looks terrible. It doesn't have the frantic twitch-style gameplay that makes Mega Man, well, MEGA MAN. I think I'll be sticking to the Megaman Zero games, which seem to be the only Megaman games worth my time these days.

No, I mean this:

Sidescrollers rendered in 3D are fine with me (I love MMNT on Cube)... but what I meant is there aren't going to be any 3D platformer style levels (a la Maximo, Jak, Ratchet).

X8, like X7, is far too slow and sluggish, I assure you.

OK, Awesome. That last line in the first paragraph of your first post had me confused.

Yeah, I think it confused me, too.

I'm not so sure about that. If you look at gameplay footage of X7 and X8 side by side, X8 looks MUCH faster and responsive than X7.

Unless you were at E3 (and I don't even think there was a playable demo of X8 then), just what exactly do you mean by, "when you played it?" The game isn't even out in Japan yet!

As a matter of fact, there was a playable demo there, right next to Command Mission. But I digress.
If it was faster, it was only marginally so. I really, really wish they'd just drop the 3D! It adds a smash of "clunk" to the game play that just detracts.. I don't understand. It's not like it's a looker - does the new "3D" look bring in more buyers? I wouldn't imagine that this low-end 3D style brings in more people than a mid-range to (conceivably) high-end sprite-based game would..

You have some good points. I'd be even more excited about X8 if it looked like La Pucelle, or even Mega Man 8. Simply because its on the PS2 doesn't mean the graphics *have* to be 3D... I agree with you on that point. But that doesn't necessarily mean the game will suck... after all, I enjoyed Mega Man Network Transmission *a lot* and it was a 3D sidescroller.

I'm guessing they're sticking with 3D because of Sony's fixation with 3D games. The G4 Icons Mega Man episode comes to mind.

Haven't watched it yet. (MMAC, right?) Anyways, Mega Man should be on Nintendo's fucking platforms. X4 and X5 feel too... foriegn, unpolished.... without grace, I guess. Although, I don't think I could see them being on the N64... so what the fuck do I know anyways? I only just hit 1K posts.... ;)

Unfortunately, even 2D sprites can't save MegaMan X these days (X6). I actually liked Legends, but that wasn't because it was a MegaMan game done right in 3D, it wasn't. But I enjoyed it for what it was. X7 hurts. Heh. But as I said, I experienced X8 and I wasn't very pleased. It still feels clunky, and that's the main problem, I think. I was actually surprised to see X8 there. I kind of imagined them to scrap X series for now after X7.
I'm a huuuge fan of X4.

Ill still pick it up, but they sooo need to go back to 2D.

Well they don't need to go back to 2D, but I would love to see a high-res 2D (think Guilty Gear isuka type sprites) MM game.
My main problem with MM games in genral is the lack of innovation. It's all been done so many fucking times, they really need to go back to the drawing board and create something fresh. New level concepts, new boss types (fire guy, elec guy, flame guy, etc, etc), a more important emphasis on story and a new main villian, please!

No matter what they tell you, he's likely to just pop up at the end for no reason! Think Andross!

I've been very excited about Mega Man X8. Mega Man X7 was one of my favorite PS2 games, although X4 is still my favorite Mega Man X of all time. I personally liked the 3-D stages of X7 and will be sad to see them go. But X8 should still be great IMO.
