View Full Version : How/where does the 360 store game updates?

I always assumed the updates were being stored as part of the save "bundle" for a particular game-like a grouping that holds the save files and any downloaded content would also hold that update.

But I checked yesterday with Bioshock and some other stuff, and that's not the case. After the update is installed, it doesn't actually show up anywhere user accessible on the system.

Is it getting stored in the system area of the disk we can't access? And if so, where do these updates go if you just have a memory card? And do they just store them forever? Like theoretically your disk could fill up with game updates you can't delete? :D

They are on the HDD. If you do maintance on your hdd you can delete them

So they're stored in the non-user accessible portion of the drive? How do you do maintenance ? I wonder what weird stuff I've got on there :D

Yea. Go to the "System" blade and select your console's hard drive. With the hard drive selected, input the following buttons: Y, X, X, LB, RB, X, X.

It's actually Y, X, X, LB, RB, X, X.

So that just deletes all that type of content? I did that procedure, it showed a status bar briefly, and then downloads the Bioshock patch again when I launch the game.

At any rate, I guess that's handy to know, probably clears out old gunk if I ever have trouble with it.

Ugh its so annoying, if you play a game you haven't touched in a while it'll bug you to update again.

I thought the updates were stored on the system cache itself (not the HDD).

Guess that means it's just storing a limited number of patches, and then dropping old ones...unless there's been a new patch since the last time you played it.

I thought the updates were stored on the system cache itself (not the HDD).

Hmm...I wonder where it stores patches if you just have a memory card? Do they have hidden areas too? You wouldn't think the system's flash ROM has enough space, but who knows.
