Sue me if this is a repost - (and get a hobby if you feel obliged to point it out!)

Tired of listening to 8 year olds use language that would make a sailor join the priesthood? Yeah, me too. So here's how you mute everybody but people on your friends list - for ALL games!!!

Go into your profile (Edit Profile) and then into the Privacy Settings. Change the voice setting to FRIENDS ONLY and voila! No more awkward moments as your mother is befouled by some pre-pubescent little fucker!!!

I've become pretty proficient in muting people, though I think there is a hidden limit as I've had people somehow get off the mute list after a heavy week of muting.

I got so fucking sick of the idiots on Halo 3, and even Live in general. %25 are cool. %25 breathe REALLY FUCKING LOUDLY. %25 are 8-year-olds who just learned the words "fuck" and "shit". I've met some really cool people on XBL... but then again, alot of loud ass 12 year olds. I use mute, but mute everyone... even more antisocial then just gaming already is.

problem with muting everyone (especially in a FPS game where you are trying to win by calling out opposing players positions) is that you can't talk to your team unless it is all friends and you can miss out on the chance of making new ones on there. now i will agree i have met plenty of annoying people on live and im sure i can be as well since i do my fair share of trash talking when i finish a map on CoD 4 where the other team is camping corners with juggernaut and grenade launchers. i mute all the extremely annoying people and i'm sure i have had a few mute me as well, but that is part of the game when you get competitive.

Also, be sure to check what "group" you've set yourself up in on Xbox Live. Are you "Recreation" or "Underground"? It does make a difference w/ who you'll get matched up with.

Last night, I had to listen to some fucking girl have a phone conversation WHILE PLAYING COD4. All everyone on the team heard was her entire side of the conversation.

After about 10 minutes of this, I told her to shut the fuck up. She finally muted her mic.

I just wanted to bump this again for anyone that hasnt seen this. This has made gaming (CoD4) so much more fun. I told all of my close friends that game with me about how to do this and they have the mute on as well. It's so much better being able to clearly communicate with each other and not have to get distracted by incessant noise and shit talkers. And just as a test last weekend, I took this off so I could hear everyone again to see what I was missing .. well it must've been the luck of the draw because there was two 12 year old sounding kids in the room rambling nonstop .. not to each other .. just talking. And they would scream if they got someone into last stand and someone else killed the last stand person first. Needless to say I immediately put the mute back on and I will keep it on for good now.

I typically only mute people that are not speaking in English. I usually just laugh at all the obscene comments made by the little kids in the lobbies.

I noticed this much earlier but I never turned it on. I might use it some time in the future, Although I usually don't find jerks on XBL because I play games that joe trash talker would call "Crap" Or I play with friends, Or I'm in private chat when I play a public match alone. I think that this is a little heavyhanded. If anything, they should set it up so that the right bumper mutes the selected person instead of having to go into each gamer's profile.

When I first got a 360 I hoped for this option.
I looked and found it quickly.

BUT... last week I figured I would shut it off. Bad idea.
I forgot how god damn irritating it was to have 5+ 10 year olds in a Halo big team match. It sounded like 2 teams of prepubescent mickey mouses attacking each other.

After that I switched everyone to mute again.

I did this, as I was tired of having to remove my wireless headset from ear when I encounter stupid kids in COD4. It's a shame there isn't an option to "Send Electrical shock" to people in Live. I'd use it. Lots.

There are certain moments in CoD4 (especially Mercenary Teamdeathmatch) where people aren't asstards and report enemies and work together. It's these teamwork moments playing with complete strangers that evens out the trashtalk. Although this is a great option (and I'll probably keep it in mind), I've only encountered like 6 singing/annoying kids. I think out of the 6, asking 5 of them nicely to stop did the trick, because they really did stop. I think most of the time, when you encounter someone annoying or singing the shit like they're a reject on American Idol, the other players just yell and curse at them like "SHUT THE F*#$( UP!".. which almost guarantees the person to continue what they're doing. I like to take a different approach and I guess it's working, dunno.

I've been getting into a lot of unfortunate games recently where someone wants to scream at the top of their lungs the whole fucking match, or something equally painful. Might as well take advantage of this.
