View Full Version : All Transworld stores - Bonus 45% trade in credit is back! ENDS 7/19

Its that time of year again, all Transworld stores (FYE, Suncoast, Sam Goody, Wherehouse, Sam Goody, Strawberries, Coconuts, Specs, Saturday Matinee, Music Land, etc) will be running their bi-annual 45% bonus "brown bag" special. Transworld corporate has said they are going to stop selling video games altogether, so this may be your last chance to stock up on credit.
Basically, anything you bring in any bag gets either a 20% bonus for cash, or 45% (25% policy + 20% bag) bonus for store credit. Stores should have the brown bags (seen below) somewhere on the counter that have all the details.
If you want to check the values of your games/dvds/cd's, go to http://www.secondspin.com . Prices for DVDs can vary by 10-20%, but usually games are spot on as long as the UPC's match.
Just to confirm one more time, this bag adds 20% onto either the CASH price, or if you choose credit, it adds 20% to the 25% bonus that Transworld policy gives, giving you a total of 45% if you choose credit. If you check your trade in values on Secondspin, add 20% to that value for the amount you'd get if you chose cash, or add 45% for the amount you would get if you chose credit.

Holy shit, I was just there today checking out what was suppose to be the video game clearance and of course BOTH FYE's at Fairoaks mall isn't doing this. FUCK..I'm loading up and going back tomorrow. I just got PoP:RS for the Wii for 8 bucks from target and the flip value might be good(12$+45%!)

mine seems to be only offering an additional 20%...:( and gamestop is paying a lot more for the games I want to trade in and they also have a 20% thing going on if you trade 4 or more games

Their policy is that they give 25% normally, add a bonus 20% to make for 45% total bonus. Sorry if that was confusing.

Niiiice. This is exactly what I've been waiting for again! Can anybody else verify this? I know I'll probably give them a call tomorrow.
Sweet! This is how I got two PS3s last year!8-)
Though, this time around I don't think I will have enough time to invest in getting that much credit, maybe enough for a few Hi-def movies, but they're usually so overpriced; I'm not too motivated. Regardless, thanks, OP! :)

The gem of the summer 07 45% sale had to be NBA Starting Five. It was at most $2 at EB/GS(less with edge or other promotions) and traded for $18 credit. Amazingly the $12 base value held up til October or November before it dropped to $2. I think I was able to trade at least 15 in those few months.
ESPN National Hockey Night for XBX (2002 hockey game) is still worth $12, but i cant find it anywhere except on EB's website (they charge $25 for it, still). I've looked on ebay, half, and amazon with no results for XBX.
I looked through all of Gamefly's year end sale, and EB/GS's 360, PS3 & Wii stuff, and there arent any really good flips. There are way too many cheap games to be checking manually for the last gen & handheld systems. Secondspin or WHerehouse really should implement a "sort by highest value" option.

Hopefully theirs a few gems that flip for a good store credit like the above user said. I wouldn't mind picking up a 360 for cheap.

My FYE is started to clear out new games at 30% off....Does this mean they'll no longer accept game trade-ins? I'll call as soon as they open, but if anyone has any insight, it would be appreciated.

i just searched for some of the games i could possibly trade but i think they give you even lower than before. unless its like madden 08 for 360 which nets you $22 before the bump. search the games youre going to trade first before you bring them in. you might get 2 or upto 4 times the amount they give you on ebay

do they still scrutinize discs with a magnifiying glass for scratches?
IAmTheCheapestGamer
01-02-2008, 08:30 AM
That they do Star, but if people took care of their games, then they wouldn't have to worry about them being scrutinized. Those people are better off going to GS with their games, where they don't give a crap what they take in.
Too bad I traded away all the games/dvds/cds I wanted to trade in during the LAST 45% bump deal.

I dont have any specific details from corporate about them stopping all video games sales/trading. I heard it from both managers that I know at the local stores. They were also supposed to stop selling Geneon DVDs in December, but that didnt happen, so maybe they will keep doing games in select markets.
FYE can be pretty anal when it comes to the quality of the game, but it really depends on who is on register. I've traded things with light scratches. One time i tried to trade something that had quite a few deep scratches. They rejected it. I then bought one of their $1 cleaning kits and went outside the store to clean the disc. The cleaner leaves some nasty looking streaks, but they said it was okay since the scratches couldnt be seen (great logic there).

If anyone knows any good games to flip, especially clearanced games from big box stores, please post here. i'm hoping for a bonanza like we all got last time with the 360 games.
davo1224
01-02-2008, 01:29 PM
Thanks OP but too risky for me. I hate FYE with a passion and I'm not gonna buy clearance games on a bonanza to trade-in to them with no guarantee they'll take them. That includes games that I'd buy new. Their prices are also terrible and rebate-tastic for the most part so this would require A LOT of work for the FYE stores in my area to get something halfway decent.

i had some extreme problems with fye last time around, i think they knew i was ripping them off when i traded in a ton of eragons over a 2 week period
when i bought my 360, i took it home , opened it , and noticed the vent was cracked, drove right back, and they refused to take it back claiming i had to go through microsoft, etc, i went livid, and after about 30 minutes of me flipping out i exchanged for a gift card back, and they told me basically to never shop in there again

After the heavy :ps3: Enchanted Arms flipping, the Sam Goody near me capped trades at 2 of a specific title. Not per day, per account. I had to dump my last copy at GameRush.
They've also jacked up their game prices, most items are $3 over MSRP ($52.99 instead of $49.99), like how GameStop used to be. Unless there's a really good deal, I'm not going to bother with them.

I completely screwed my local FYE last year by dumping a ton of CDs on them - these days they won't even look at my stuff, they know I ripped them off, heheh.
Too bad I don't have any tradeable things... that and the local FYE sucks balls, all their clearance games are priced at standard MSRP, and they never take these offers seriously.

I'm pissed. I was checking how much credit I had on my giftcard today @ Wherehouse.com and instead of just displaying the amount, it took the money off my giftcard and applied it directly to wherehouse.com only purchases.
I hate this company.
I went in to my local FYE and didn't see any of the bags. I bought one of those $1 cleaning kits (in anticipation of trading stuff in) and the woman at the register gave me a bag.
One interesting thing I noticed was that the bag says the promotion is going to be ongoing until 02/28.

They always give extra 20% for store credit instead of cash. If you take cash you will only get the extra 25 (or 20?) %

It never ceases to amaze me how many CAGs seem to WANT AssRapeStop to be the ONLY chain left in business to buy used games from, by wishing this chain to go under. Personally, if I have a choice and know I want a mint/near mint condition game, I know where I'm going and it ISN'T Gamestop.
As far as the checking balance on a card thing goes, there's a # on the back of the card for you to be able to check your balance on the phone. It's way easier and less risky(apparently) than checking online on one of their sites.
Oh and GBmanNC, I believe the additional amount they add is 20% if you take credit, but it's negated if you choose to take cash. Although, with Powerdrome Racing on PS2, the trade value was more than double what I paid for it at GS, so I didn't really mind losing the 20% that much.
But, if you try taking cash, the 45% bonus is invalidated and you only get the base trade value. At least that's the way they've done it around here.
Normally, their trade values are better than GS, but here's a word of warning, if the price doesn't come up on SecondSpin.com, then DON'T take the game(s) in for trade, since you're probably only getting $.50-1.00 for those games.
Of course, if that's all you paid in the first place, then you're breaking even before the bonus is added.
Just a few words of warning for those considering doing this deal. Oh and davo, if FYE ever were to go outta biz, I'll hold you to your 'buying everyone on CAG a game' promise. I just hope they never do, since then I'll resort to doing ALL my game shopping at the local shop I get good deals from long before I EVER consider buying the bulk of my games from AssRapeStop.

Actually, I kept trading a high value/low cost game I found super cheap from Gamestop to FYE and kept getting $15 credit each time. I only paid between $2-3 for each copy from GS, so I was making 500%+ over what I'd paid for them. I got a PStwo slim outta the deal and they sent me a double rebate once they finally realized I had filled out the forms and what not correctly.
They paid me the rebate $$$ in CASH @ store level once I complained to a DM about my rebate being stalled for seemingly months. Then, about 3 weeks later(7 months out from when I sent the thing in), I got what looked like a post card, which was in fact a check for $30.
So, I got paid $60, spent maybe $36-40 on copies of the ONE game and ended up with a pretty much free PStwo outta the deal. Some games just keep their value for a LONG time for FYE it seems, but you have to check SecondSpin.com first to make sure your games fall into that category.
Thing is, I did this all during a period when they DIDN'T have this 45% promo going. Last time they had this promo going though, I think I made over $100-150 in credit by flipping games/movies/cds that I no longer used and many of them were Kmart clearance games(Halo Triple Pack went into them during the last promo, broken up into the 3 seperate games) or stuff that I just got super cheap .

It doesn't look like the one in my mall is participating. Oh well.
I found out about upcdatabase and used it to print out UPC's to CD's I got from BMG. You could print out UPC's to pricier versions of the CD but I advise against that as they tend to cancel your gift card when they find out. :/

Yea, the bag is exactly the same as above, except with a new expiration date (2/28/08). Just got back from my FYE and updated the OP with all the details. I was really surprised that this deal is going to last for about two whole months. I'd imagine with clearances & pricedrops happening every week or so, some gems have gotta pop up.
Just to make it said for this page, the bag says "20% more", meaning that it stacks with their policy of 25% bonus for choosing credit. If you choose cash, you get just the 20% bonus for the bag.
I had quite a laugh, my store still has half a shelf full of NBA Starting Five's that i traded from the last sale. I almost took a picture.

My problems with FYE far outweigh even the biggest problems I've ever had at Gamestop.
FYE's employees are some of the ruder, more inept retail employees I've ever met. They'll say anything to a customer. I was actually called poor once by a register rat because I didn't want a DVD that rang up for like $20 more and only wanted it because of the sale.
If they don't know about a promotion, it doesn't exist. I see what looks like a set of encyclopedias in the form of clipboards filled with various information and not once have I ever seen anyone actually READ what's on them. If an employee happens to know about a promotion but not the details, they're made up on the fly.
I've been lied to about inventory just so that they wouldn't have to honor a deal which is ILLEGAL.
Their sister website, wherehouse.com provides the in-store merchandise at cheaper prices but without any way of using their discount card. Their discount card is essentially paying $25 to get rid of their ridiculous in-store markups.
Then there's the trade-ins. There's all this talk about how Gamestop will take in a product in any condition. I see that as a boon as a trader and as a buyer. When you limit trade-in quality like FYE does, you not only can't use them as a trade-in source unless your games are practically sealed, but you also have a very limited supply. If a person trades in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and it's in less than good condition, it's obvious why. They're not that bright in terms of gaming either way. That's the benefit of shopping Gamestop over FYE. Sure it's better to have a game in great condition, but I'd rather have the game be available and usually cheaper than hoping to stumble on a mint copy of a game for possibly more money. To me, that's the antithesis of being cheap.
They're just a terrible company. If that means I have one less place to shop, so be it. They don't even show up on gaming franchises' radars so it's not like having them around benefits the gamer in the spirit of competition. If they shut down, it would be one less place for a customer to get hosed and mistreated. Go to Circuit City if you need that sort of fix.

First off, I've only ever been asked ONE time(out of innumerable times that I've shopped at my local FYE stores) if I want to get the Backstage Pass. Compare that with Gamestop, whose drones will even ask you if you have anything to trade in, even when you walk in empty handed and push that stupid Edge card out the wazoo. I have to thank you for finding that loophole to get an Edge card for $2 via mail, though if I ever get off my ass and send out a check with the renewal card, I may finally get one.
Second, I flatly told them that I'd never buy any DVDs from them due to the fact that I prefer to buy them on sale. The local clerks had no problems with that. You just have jerks running the registers at your local store(s).
Third, you think it's a GOOD thing that Gamestop takes in games in ANY condition? It's great for the soccer moms with the whiny brats, but bad for those of us who like our games mint/complete. I'll admit it, I'm a condition snob and have made the people @ Gamestop go through 20 copies of a game before I picked ONE to take home. So, for that very reason, I refuse to shop there for good condition games.
Fourth and finally, the copies of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Futurama and various other hard to find games beg to differ than you can 'find them cheaper @ Gamestop'.
For me, FYE is overpriced on cd's and dvd's, but lower than Gamestop in MANY cases(not all)on games. The condition of the games they sell is also usually SUPERIOR to Gamestop in EVERY CONCEIVABLE WAY. Admittedly, I've run into a couple games which were missing an instruction manual or had a couple scratches which were more than just surface ones, but at FYE it's the exception not the rule. Can Gamestop say that?
Plus, look at the trade values you get and the piddily 'bonuses' you get. The only really GOOD trade deals GS ever had were the 'trade 3, get $10 extra' deals, since the %'s more deals usually work out in THEIR favor more, since you have to trade in more games to get the better %.
Best option of all is to simply KEEP YOUR GAMES, which negates ANY argument over which store is 'better' for trading stuff into. But hey, you're preferences are your preferences. Mine definitely lean towards FYE being the better chain than GS though.
Oh and GBman, they always told me that the 20% more was ONLY if taking credit locally, so it's a YMMV thing about getting the 20% with cash trades, I suppose.

Yeah, that's what they told me tonight when I went as well. They wouldn't give me the extra 20% bag deal for cash.

Just a heads up, FYE recently (last month or so) sent out a memo to the stores about not buying multiple items from customers. There isnt a way to track items sold by customer in the system yet, so its a YMMV thing. Also, if you want to bring in games you should make sure the store you are going to still sells games.
And just one side note about how crappy fye or gamestop can be. I think it really comes down to the people that work there. Every company has stores full of retards and assholes. The trick is just shopping at a different fye/gs. I'd like to think that my store isnt one of the bad ones.

QFT.
I only go into their stores to find occassional good deals on old games and to flip credit (even still, their trade in values aren't nearly as good as they used too be).

Sears has Midway Arcade Treasures on psp for $2.97 (ymmv clearance price) and that trades in for $7.
I tried Kameo and Star Trek Legacy (also on clearance) but those only trade in for $3 and $2.

Too bad no FYE stores in NYC do trade ins anymore.
The one in Astoria is closing down (due to losing their lease...chitchat I had with one of the managers last month), and, thus, they are not taking in any trades. I'll miss that store if it doesn't open up elsewhere in the neighborhood...it was the closet FYE for me to partake in any good deals and the people working there are great (nice and socialable and just overall good people).
There is the one in Jackson Heights that will probably take trades, but last time I tried to do the bag special they wouldn't give me the full 45% bonus. The manager there told me that the bag only allowed me to get a 20% bonus if I took cash for trading in stuff.
The FYE in Manhattan does not sell used stuff, so they don't take any trades. The only other Transworld store I know of in NYC is the Saturday Matinee in Staten Island.

I used to work at that one, back when it was Coconuts, which should tell you how old I am. Anyway, I never really felt like they had any great deals, and when I worked there, I used to send people to Sound City for CD's quite often. Not a fan of some of the people who work there, though some are ok.

Just got back from the Burbank CA store and traded in a bunch of DVDs and a few games. $96 in trades and I got a store credit card for $133.00!! Nice... Got my PS3 there last year during this deal after trading in a ton of CDs.
The video games are being liquidated for 30% off all new games and 10% off all new hardware (used games are not discounted). Barely anything left there though...
Don't forget that you can use the store credit gift card on-line if you want something you can't find in the store!

YMMV I guess. My store is awesome and I go there all the time. I've traded stuff there dozens of times and never had a problem. You get more than GameStop 90% of the time, so I don't know what this dude's deal is... bad apple in the FYE tree it seems. Tough luck dude.

Only problem with using them online is their shipping rates suck bad, plus every coupon code I've found online for a discount on shipping or items never work. They have a ton of DVD discount codes, but none ever seem to work for games.
I really wish they had site-to-store like Wally World and other B&M retailers with online presences.

A cashier can special order ANY dvd/game that shows in their touchscreen systems located in the aisles. All it takes is a $2 or $5 deposit. If you put in an order on Monday, they usually get it in by Friday.
I know its a small chance at finding a worthwhile title, but CD's really are great for flipping. One of my favorite band's 5 song EPs gets $21.75 after 45% bonus. The last 3 copies ive bought on ebay were all $7 shipped. Theres a few more on Amazon, hence the reason i'm not stating the name of the cd/band.
I tried just searching for bands starting with the letter A on secondspin. It would take me a loooong ass time to cross-check all the good stuff with amazon/ebay/half/froogle. I remember last year there was an ABBA or Ace of Base cd that they clearanced for $2 and still paid $19 for. If anyone finds anything, let us know.

Oh and stoned99, I would've told him: "Well then, give me this pack of gum". Buy the gum, take the 45% more bag, dump your cds into it, then say "I'd like to trade these".
Oh and most times they won't take CDs/DVDs you got that're promo ones. I know, I tried having them take the 'documentary' one from Driver 3, for which there was NO listing. They also originally DQ'd my copy of the original SAW, which had paper residue leftover from a GS sticker on the slipcover OVER the UPC.
A little Goo Gone worked wonders on that plastic slipcover and they let me trade it with NO PROBLEMS.
You just have dickheads working at your local store, since they gave me the 45% more bag last year without buying a damn thing.

My experiences at several FYE stores and with their Corporate offices were enough to drive me away from ever buying another product or dealing with this company again. Not only were my transactions in local stores handled with extreme prejudice, except for one manager in Niles, Il - she was exceptional at her job, but upper management was just as ineffective at handling customer relations. My experiences include trading in games, buying new product and following up on shipped product that I never received and took over 4 months to be credited for. I'm sure others may have had positive experiences but I will never support this company again and wanted to share that with this community.

I've updated the op to be a little clearer with the breakdown.
This would be a neat deal if store credit wasn't a waste because their prices are simply god awful. How they stay in business I'll never know.
Really depends on what you buy, movies & cd's are usually at SRP but they'll run some really good discounts. Plus if your lucky enough to find some decent flips, it could cost you only $4 total for a dvd. Anime fans are usually treated really well when it comes to sale, up until last week there were 2 50% off sales going on at the same time as a B2G1F and Buy 2 Get a $10 gift card (both of which stacked). People were able to get some semi-new series (6 discs) for $34 total, and they still had a $10 gift card after that.
New Video games are pretty much the same prices as everyone else. However they run some decent rebates every now in then. One good deal I know is that they have Halo 3 for $20 after MIR, $14 if you have a backstage pass, and before anyone craps on their rebates, as long as you include everything (FYE doesnt require the actual barcode, only their barcodes that they put on the cases), you should have no problems. I've done 5 MIR's and gotten them back in around a month and a half. They also have a site (fyerebates.com) where you can pre-submit and choose a virtual gift card for a higher amount than advertised MIR that delivers as soon as they receive your submitted rebate.
The backstage pass is really worth it, I bought mine in January of last year and i've saved at least $200 thanks to it. Now that you can use it online means that in combination with the 10% off coupon codes, you can get 20% almost everything on the site.

Trust me, Bezerker, I filled out everything, sent in the proper items they asked for and it STILL took 6-7 months to get a rebate for a PStwo that should've taken 4-6 WEEKS. So, as far as their rebates go, I despise them. But, as far as their game values go for trade ins and to buy(certain games, not all, since they ARE outrageous on some behind the price drop curve on some prices), they are great imo.

I fear FYE may have finally gotten a little wiser about their trade-in prices. All the big winners from the last few go-rounds have been slashed. The only thing that jumps out is them offering $55 (so, $79 after store credit bonus) for the Halo 3 Legendary edition, which I know some people have gotten for a good price.

I've updated the op to be a little clearer with the breakdown.
Berzerker - Thanks for the heads-up. The FYE near me - Arundel Mills - is a mix bag,.. Sometimes they add the extra 25% off, other times they don't.
Question - how do you save 20% online with their card?
Thanks,
matthew

Its the 10% for your backstage pass + the 10% off code "Welcomeccten"(once per account). You can create as many accounts, and link your backstage pass to as many accounts as you want, so theres really no worries.
Shipping on dvd & cd's is free after $25, but unfortunately, tax applies if there is a TW store in your state.

I can't believe they gave me the "You don't have the 20% bag this time, but we have a million on the counter you can use for next time but just not this time" line.
So when I grabbed a bag along with my trade-in fodder before I left, the cashier tells me, "You can't come back today. It has to be tomorrow."
What is with that policy? Do enough people actually just say, "okay, forget about the 20% THIS time now that I've traded everything in?"

NOT ME. If I know there's a trade deal going on that I want to participate in, I'll ask if I need anything special to get in on it. If not, I'll trade my stuff in on the spot. My local FYE stores were giving out the brown bags the last time they had the trade deal as soon as you walked into the store, so I'm hoping they do that again THIS time.

everyone knows they can go to wherehouse.com and use the box in the middle of the screen on the right to search for Cd, DVD, and game credit amounts, right? wherehouse owns FYE and the numbers are exact, though missing the extra 25% you get in store. I've used it for past trade amounts and have never been steered wrong. Well, except for that time the store had 50 copies of a high trade-in value game and they only gave me $5 instead of $22. :(

Any time I've done trades with them and the values were horrible(.50-1.00), I just tell them I'll keep the movies/games/cds that had low values and be done with it. Mind you, on a few earlier trades, I got nailed on a cd or two, but I only paid $1-3 for them, so getting about what I paid isn't that bad. Plus, I figured I would probably never listen to them again(Alicia Keys), so it's better to get SOMETHING for them than have them collect dust.
You just have to ask for a list of what got what, it may be a pita and some FYE people may NOT want to do it, but just keep reaffirming that you won't trade the stuff otherwise. I still miss their excellent trade values on crap games I could buy mint/complete from Gamestop for $2-3. Ahhh....those were the days.
As for them keeping both receipts, I'd ask for one and keep asking, since I'd want it for proof of what I got and how many items I traded, etc. You know, just for my OWN sake.

Damn!! And I've seen multiple copies of that SNK Card Fighters game at my local Sears, though knowing my luck they would ring up full price. Plus, one of my local FYE's was one of the ones which eliminated their games and they don't take trades on games AT ALL anymore and the FYE I normally hit is re-arranging everything in their store and taking LIMITED trades. Only one close to me to trade stuff in at is about 20 miles away and I don't have the bonus bag anymore, I gave it to a friend since I figured I wouldn't be trading anything in.
But, I found some stuff which is getting a decent amount, so I might as well get rid of it now, while it'll get me MORE. So, I guess I'm going to go trudge off to the FYE I normally hit and grab another bag or two anyway.

Unfortunately, that IS their prerogative, to reject stuff because of scratches and because they have too many already. I found this out once I had loaded up my local FYE's with copies of Powerdrome Racing on PS2. I'm actually glad they don't take in scratched up shit, since that makes them just that much better than the home of scratched to hell and unplayable discs known as Gamestop.

Second Spin is usually right 80-90% of the time, but there is the chance that like the poster above you, they had too many of the DVDs/CDs that you were intending to trade in.
For me, they're good about 90% of the time, with the other 10% being a mishmash of bad and mediocre. But, for the most part, they've been good on prices for me, so I'm still happy with them.
BTW, has anyone else had their local Suncoast close and an FYE in the same area take their inventory and even shelving? That JUST happened at the one mall near me, though I'm not sure why it didn't happen sooner, since FYE was always at least a little busy, whereas the Suncoast looked like a ghost town 90% of the time.

I have a bunch of DVD sets that I received as gifts and don't want. I'll definitely inquire to see if the stores here participate in this great deal.
FYE bought Suncoast. In late March 2006, Trans World Entertainment Corp. completed the purchase of nearly all of the assets of, Musicland Holding Corporation, for $104.2 million in cash and $18.1 million in assumed liabilities. Trans World will retain the Suncoast Motion Picture Co. name on about 170 stores.

Actually, all I've had to do was ask the clerk at my local FYE for a bag, since I trade in there OFTEN. So, I was given at LEAST one, which I used earlier today. They gave me $57 for stuff I paid maybe $20 for. A couple Xbox games(San Andreas was one), a couple PS2 games(Adventures Of Darwin was one of them, $8 before the extra 45% total), a couple DVDS(Silent Hill, Scarface 2 disc which I got for $4-5) and about 5-7 CDs.
Most of the CD's were spot on with Second Spin's prices, a few were lower, but the bonus on the other ones made up for it.
I was shocked I got about $12-13 for Adventures Of Darwin. I would've kept it, if not for it being completely fuckin annoying.
Oh and like others have reported, unless you ASK for a receipt anymore on trades, they DON'T GIVE YOU ONE. That kinda sucks, but oh well....least I got rid of some crap I never play or have watched and got sick of seeing sit around collecting dust.
Now, I'm gonna try flipping a couple copies of SNK/Capcom Card Fighters for DS to them for $19 something after bump, to make a lil more credit.
Oh and here's a funny reverse of values. FYE only gives $1 for Matrix: Path Of Neo for PS2, but Gamestop gives $5. Weird, since I figured FYE would beat them for trade value on a 2-3 year old game.

I'm going to look at my local Sears tomorrow, see if I can't find some $4 copies of the SNK/Capcom DS game that gets a good bump and flip them like crazy, since others have said it's glitchy anyway so I doubt anyone would want it TO PLAY.
Hell, if the value is correct, I'll gladly pay $4 per game to get almost $20 a pop. Do that enough and I may have enough for another cheap PStwo slim, like I did with copies of Powerdrome for PS2.

The cleaner leaves some nasty looking streaks, but they said it was okay since the scratches couldnt be seen (great logic there).
i can confirm this policy is in effect at my local wherehouse (now fye). i traded in all my DVDs during a 45% blitz and was saving my credit to buy i ps3. i held on to that card for 6 months only to find out they had stopped selling consoles and games.

Well, sorry to disappoint you, but TransWorld is no where near going out of business.
And just to respond to some of the other comments, Not all stores are discontinuing selling games. During one of their CEO's Conference Calls (i think for the third quarter), he said they were only pulling games out of the lowest margin stores, to try to boost sales percentages in order to get better allocation from distributors.
With their push towards trade-ins, it looks like they're just trying to grab some revenue from Gamestop's huge used business. Makes me wish I didn't trade in all of my old PS2 games to Gamestop in November (though the $450 in credit was nice)

Wait!! Why are they a 'horrible company'? Sure, their rebate process takes forever sometimes and they are pickier than Gamestop on the condition of stuff they take in, but the latter is a GOOD thing in my opinion.
If not for their microscopic examination of every item traded in, you'd end up with a carbon copy of Gamestop, where it's a crapshoot if you can even find a working, not scratched to crap copy of a game/cd/dvd without checking EVERY DAMNED COPY in the store.
I'm just curious as to why you think they're horrible, when they are many times head and shoulders above Gamestop and sometimes even Gamerush/Gamecrazy/Blockbuster/etc on trade values. For my money, I'd rather spend a few bucks more to know I'm getting stuff that'll work the first time and every time.

Prime spot or not that store never did good business. They always charged over MSRP prices (i.e. $54.99 for $49.99 games) and had very few people actually buying items in there. Also, the store was HUGE and much bigger than all other FYEs so their rent was probably exhorbitant.

Yea, FYE sucks as far as their prices go on dvds & music. Video Games at all the stores here are at retail price (used games not included).
Even if a movie is $30 rather than $20, considering the highest threshold for credit i've seen is $1 for every $14 credit, that still means you could buy a movie for a total of $3 cash. Can you do that at Circuit City, Best Buy (non-test stores), Walmart, Target, etc?
Unfortunately it seems they've been on top of keeping up with price trends for values. This year is definately sad compared to last.

Yeah, unfortunately I guess Transworld caught onto SNK/Capcom Card Fighters, since it's coming up as $11 on Secondspin.com now. After the extra 20% bonus for taking credit(and the usual 25% more for taking credit they already give you), it only fetches $15 and change now versus almost $20 less than a week ago.
$5 is $5 and if you flip enough copies, it could be a PS2 for super cheap, since you can get the game from Sears for $3-4.

I've found some flip material thanks to Righstuf.com's 10 for $50 or 25 for $100 sale. Not enough for a full 25 order (you can only order 1 copy per order), but if you only want a few items, it should help fill up the order (all prices are after 45% bonus):
Worth $10.15 each
Angelic Layer, Vol. 1: Divine Inspiration [With Collector's Box]
Aura Battler Dunbine, Vol. 1: Tales of Byston Well [With Memorial Box]
Get Backers DVD 1 (Hyb): G & B On the Case + Artbox
Gravion DVD 1 (Hyb): Divine Steel + Artbox (Limited)
Kaleido Star DVD 1 (Hyb): Welcome to the Kaleido Stage! + Artbox
Kino's Journey DVD 1 (Hyb): Idle Adventurer + Artbox
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi DVD 1 (Hyb) + Artbox
Pretear DVD 1 (Hyb) + Artbox
Saiyuki DVD 7 (Hyb): The Gods of War + Artbox
Worth $11.60 each
Gilgamesh DVD 1 (Hyb) + Artbox
Gravion Zwei DVD 1 (Hyb): Eye of the Storm + Artbox (Limited)
Madlax DVD 1 (Hyb): Connections + Artbox
RahXephon DVD 1 (Hyb): Threshold + Artbox + Tshirt
Above dvds total $137.75, meaning that the other 12 dvds you pick for yourself are pretty much just a nice bonus.

It looks as though most of the trade values on second spin are like a quarter for the DVD only and then some are $5-8 for the DVD + box.
The box adds that much value?
Looking at the RS webpage those listed as with the artbox only retail for like $5 more ($29.95 vs $34.95 for example). The ones with artboxes generally say something like comes with box to hold the complete series. Does that mean you need to take in a bunch of huge collector's set boxes with one dvd in them?
I can see the potential for problems if that's the case
Great work on putting together a list.

Actually, you'll be pretty much SOL if you try to trade in stuff that's not near mint/mint and complete with a regular case and instructions/inserts for games and cds. So yeah, I guess the completeness adds value to the items.
And, lemme say AGAIN that I'm glad that Transworld requires everything or they'd become a carbon copy of Trashstop.

I've traded in a lot of stuff and have had very few rejected.
Which reminds me I did get one rejected the other day. I had a bunch of sealed 360 games, which I always break out of the shrinkwrap before trading in (employees think it's stolen or something is up when you bring in several sealed DVD's and games). Anyway, she pulled it out and flipped it over and there were two white spots on it. I looked at the back of the case and there was this split right down the back like something sharp came down on the center of the DVD case. I don't know what the deal was with it, but I bought it new on Amazon.

I traded in a copy of a game for PS2, which I just got @ Gamestop. I told the guy at GS that I wanted a 'good condition copy'. I get to FYE, go to trade the game in and they show me the bottom of the disc. It was covered in this nasty looking grit.
I'm like 'wtf, what if I was buying this for a friend, this thing looked like crap'. So, I took it back to GS, then took the now CLEANED(with Windex) disc back to FYE and got my $15 cash.
You definitely need to check the condition BEFORE you go into the store with them, since it's a pita and some stores will give you the crap about 'you have to come back tomorrow to trade that' when you just try to go out and clean them then come back.
They're normally very picky around here though, which shocked me when they didn't reject the Scarface 2 disc DVD edition, since the one disc had a bunch of scratches on it.
Oh well, hopefully they're getting LESS picky these days.

The reason why its 25 cents is that they have too many copies; normally they pay $3 for all anime dvds unless they have too many.
The volume x w/ artbox has its own seperate barcode compared to the disc only version. You will have no problems trading it in as long as you include everything it came with (other than t-shirts, since they apparently dont like getting those used, lol.)

If the items didn't come up on the search, that means they're worth jack, that's a given. Although, it's not always that SecondSpin is wrong perse, it could just be that the store has too many of those games/movies/cds already and dropped their own individual price in their system.
I'm not sure if it works like Gamestops system, but once they have a shitload of the same stuff, those items they have a ton of become worth nothing or close to nothing.
And buyout, you do what you have to to get the credit. And hell, for those kind of prices, I'd drag them into FYE in a burlap sack if I had no bags big enough to fit them all.

Most boxes are the size of 4-7 dvds stacked on their sides. Even if you have little grocery store bags, you should be able to put 4 in each bag.

Out of 18 items I received $153 in credit... even better was most of the stuff I had brought in was from $5 bins/sales or I bought used.... You get the 25% automatically for taking credit instead of cash, but during this promo, they give you 20% MORE for taking credit. Unfortunately, some have said that their Transworld stores are being picky about the rules of the deal. The bag supposedly says you can use ANY bag to get the bonus, whereas some stores say you have to have THEIR bag and some others have said that you need to buy something before you can GET the bag.
The way some make it sound, it sounds like a HUGE YMMV in their areas, but my area was just fine for trades, no issues AT ALL.
During the last promo, a few reported being able to use the Backstage Pass card to get another 10%(ala the Gamestop Edge card) on TOP of the 45% promo. But, I think that's a HUGE YMMV.

Take the receipt back and ask why you weren't given the additional 20%? Did you use their bag for the promo or your own? I ask because some said that some FYE/Transworld employees were being total asshats about giving the extra 20% if you didn't either BUY something first to GET THEIR BAG or BRING THE STUFF IN IN THEIR BAG.

Yea, thats the one bad thing about FYE; even though all promotion rules are stated clearly in their promotion catalog; they still love to twist the rules around in their favor.
The stores I go to have the bags laying in the aisles, and at the registers for anyone to take. They also have no problem combining offers. A few weeks ago there was a 50% off Geneon Sale, B2G1F, and Buy 2 Get a $10 gift card. I was able to pick up all 6 discs of Gankutsuou for $38 and I still had a $10 gift card left over.
The best flips right now are posted on page 9. $4 into $10.15 - $11.60. Unfortunately, theyre items that have to ship and may take up to a 3-4 weeks to ship. Hopefully i'll get mine by the end of February.

So I went back to FYE to trade in more CDs and a couple of DVDs. I asked the clerk that I came in last week to trade in and the 20% didnt show up. He asked me if I brought the bag in and I said yes. Since its a trade-in, he was unable to give me the 20%. It wasnt a sale where he can refund and re-ring the sale. But he said that he'll make sure to apply the 20%.
I also had him scan Doom DVD for me to see how much it would be. He ended up giving the DVD back as I said I'd decide later on and the computer gave me $1.88.
Now I have $80 worth of credit. i would get Blu-Ray discs but they're so expensive compared to online or in other stores. I guess I'll have to get games.

My local stores are a major pita about that too. If you happen to try and trade stuff into them too late in the day, they'll refuse you. If you try to trade something on the weekend, after they've taken trades all week, they'll refuse you.
So anymore, I simply call them before even bothering to stop down, since I've wasted trips before.

Will that get me banned?
IAmTheCheapestGamer
02-06-2008, 02:31 AM
It might get you banned or at least barred from trading that same game for a while. I know my 3 local FYE's(back when all 3 took games for trades still) had 3-4 copies each of the one PS2 game that was a GREAT flipping game for a while. But, I always did it one at a time, some of the games I took cash on and used for gas $$$ to get another copy of the game to hit up another FYE with for credit.
So, be careful and only do maybe 2 of a title at a time and never try trading in more copies of that same game to the same store in the same week. That's just begging to be banned, if you do that.

Actually, FYE usually has the best prices on boxsets that arent old. Most of the Geneon boxsets are already half off, combined with the backstage pass it would bring both Trigun LE tins to $27 each; Gungrave to $59, Samurai Champloo to $75~. And slice it in a 3rd to calculate the actual amount of cash spent if you did my method above.

Really depends on who you deal with. Some people will let you trade in multiple copies of the same game in one transaction. Last year with the NBA Starting Five flip ($2 -> $18) i traded around 13 copies to one store. They still have half of a shelf filled with nothing but NBA Starting Five's.

Ummm at the store. Any bag will work as well but some want you to have the paper bag in order to get the 20%
Also, you have to remind them about the 20% or they wont apply it.

At all the stores around me, it has to be their bag.

Right on the bag it says "you may bring in any bag". I got some wierd looks walking around the mall with a big garbage bag, but it worked just fine. My store even gave me 50% as 45% was too 'uneven'. All of my dvds matched secondspin's value except for 1 which was $4.50 rather than $10.50 (i already have that dvd, and $4.50 was more than i paid, so i sucked it up). Grand total was $52 spent, $136.50 earned.
No good news on deals except they are doing 75% all 2008 calenders; B1G150% off on all figures & rolled posters; Buy 2 $16.99 and under get 1 free; and Buy 3 used dvds, cds, or games, get one free.

Don't forget their 75% off christmas stockings sale too. I picked up 2x naruto stockings, a darth vader stocking, and a harry potter knit stocking for $3.xx each.

OMG.
I wish I was so much better at "Beating The System."
It just doesn't feel right for me for some reason, even tho they never lose money.
As for the figures, I'm jelous :( I want some figures I see, but no way am I paying 30-40 for one.
No Naruto Stockings over here :/

I'm not sure if its still going on, but FYE were selling Halo 3 for $20. They also pay $33.35 for it; so you could buy it, then trade it in right on the spot for an instant $13.35 profit.
Bioshock currently is on sale for $20 & trades for $27.55. Not as great of a profit unfortunately.

is Halo 20 new? and is it straight up 20 dollar or some rebate bullshit
Bezerker
02-12-2008, 08:02 AM
It was a $40 instant rebate, same thing as what Bioshock is doing. But since Bioshock is doing it now, there may be a posibility that the Halo 3 deal is over. I'll confirm tonight when i stop by my FYE.

Yep, looks like the Halo 3 deal is over. Bioshock is $20 ($18 w/ Backstage pass). Unfortunately even though it shows as $20 on the touchscreen system, the special order price will be $60 unless it comes in during the promotional period.

This is probably a dumb question, but I want to ask here before I get my hopes up on walking away with a half-paid for PS3 - do you need the cases to trade in DS or GBA games?

I went to my local FYE and asked about the bag promotion. Was told the promotion is over. Is there a way I can fight this? Thank you,
miktau

they stop giving the bag out around the end of jan begining of feb so if you dont already have it your sol. The actual promotion is still valid till the 28th though.

My store still has tons of bags laying around. I'm going to be going to the Ghetto Fye tomorrow to scope out what good used stuff they have (theyre the #1 FYE in Hillsborough county for stolen goods, so they usually have all tuesday's releases "used" on wednesday)
The deal is going on for another two weeks, so stores should still have the bags out.
A little side story about the ghetto fye, due to their high amount of stolen goods traded in, ALL Fye's in the county now require you to fill out a form including employment information, drivers license info, height, weight, and fingerprints; and you have to fill out the form each time you trade. It really sucks when you just want to trade one or two dvds.

Zomg the other day at one of my fyes there was a guy (well id rather leave race out of it just to prevent a flame war) but anyways he was trading in like a stack of 50 brand new dvds and games with all the security stickers still on em. Now of course he could have bought them but id be inclined otherwise. I was about to buy some off him considering he was only getting like $1 for numerous good dvds but decided against it because i didnt want the trouble. Anyways gotta try and get more crap to sell.
cheers,
Mike

I don't think the Transworld stores take used hardware of any kind actually. I know I wish they actually did buy/sell used systems, since they would be just like their used games, in great shape with little chance of them NOT working on my systems.
I think I'm going to dump my The Boondocks Season 1 and Pinky & The Brain Volume 1 sets off on them on Monday, since I've watched them MAYBE 2-3 times since I bought them.

I went to FYE and the clerk said the promotion ended. I just didnt care anymore. They screwed me over with the 20% 3 times even though I specifically showed them the bag and said to add the 20% and they said OK

I think they stopped sending FYE's the bags or something. I traded in stuff at a couple stores and they acted as though they had never seen them before. One store started to call the manager and ask if the promotion had expired. I pointed to the date right on the bag and they hung up.

Just a heads up on some possible good flippage; Most EB/GS's will be running a Buy 2 Get 4 Free on all dvds, hd-dvds, and blu-rays. I'd imagine doing the B2G4 and buying all season sets would be pretty lucrative as far as profit.

Yeah, but has it been confirmed?

It's supposedly going to start 3 days AFTER this promo ENDS. 2/25/08 So no, there will be no way to take advantage of this trade deal with the DVD B2G4 free deal.
Of course, if Gamestops used DVDs are in as lovely condition as their games, then FYE and the Transworld stores doing the promo would reject them en masse.
Oh and let me say fuck fuck fuckity fuck fuck, since I decided I wanted to trade in 2-3 DVD sets to FYE and unfortunately the local stores are giving me the 'you need the actual brown bag we gave out during beginning of the promo' line.
I'm still gonna try at the one FYE tomorrow during the day, since the one guy knows I'm there very often to trade stuff, so maybe I can get him to just add the 25% more.
