Best Buy has put out a news item that Tuesday January 8 they will put out about 100 skus to be marked down. As of yesterday there was no list. I have no idea if this will be clearance oriented, or if the markdowns will be of a price drop nature.

I'm posting this as a heads up. I have no idea if it will be cheap games, or just a bunch of price drops on some multiplatform skus. Just keep an eye on Best Buy.

If it turns out to be lame, please leave the flamethrowers put away. :-)

There were no highlights. They dropped a lot of games to 1.99-4.99, which sounds great, but 90% of these titles had already sold out long ago at most stores, except for generic kiddie/movie tie-in crap like Monster House. If anyone walked out of there with one game, they were very lucky, most people got nothing from this sale. I suspect its going to be the same again...

I just hope if we get the full list, it isn't posted that in advance like last years where you had FW and SD waiting at the front door. Not that it mattered, all I saw was junk like VeggiTales and a few old sports games. The only thing worth buying was Katamari Damacy at $4.99 which I already had.

In my experience working at Best Buy, they don't read the newsletters and may only realize the sale if there's an Action Center item that makes them re-tag the items. I was one of the most informed workers there because I liked to waste time and read all the other departments' newletters deal-hunting for myself. But at least I shared with you guys!

Fatwallet/Slick Deals similar sites as CAG but mainly hoarders.. last time BB had this kind of sale you could easily pick them out because they were the people with the printed lists in line before the store opened... Had about 10 of them last time and 3 guys were a team lol and they got the list from SD.

Yeah pretty much like my Wii hunting at Bestbuy one Sunday morning. I asked an employee in the games area if they had any Wii's and she said right away "yes we got a small pallet of them in this morning". Well I got there right as it opened and it was slow because this was summer time and she said I will go in back and get you one.. So 30 mins or so she comes out and says im sorry I thought those were Wii but they were actually 360's ..... Yeah I know the boxes were both white at one time but you can certainly tell the difference.. So seeing that was not prime Wii hunting time I bet they got in like a half dozen or so and were already employee spoken for. Thats alright I found one a few days later at a Sears Grand.

Here's a way around the system. Go buy the game or games before the sale. Once the sale takes place go back on the same day for a price match. :D

The drops will take place on Jan 8. Typically lists are printed out on the day of the drop. The only reason an advance news item came out was because of the number of skus. There is no way of knowing if a list will be posted ahead of time.

It wil most likely be a bunch of EA or Activision style multiplatform price drops but who knows.

It was tagged $59.99 and the people at the checkout counter were all going crazy about how a PS3 game could be under $10

Good, hopefully it'll be more Wii/X360/PS3 titles along with PS2/GCN/XBX games. Last year, I did quite well with a similar sale (got Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence for $9.99, We Love Katamari and Sukioden V for 1.99 and Wild Arms 4 for 4.99).

I'm surprised it's much earlier this year. The Best Buy I go to regularly is practically cleaned out now -- hopefully, the titles in question will be arriving soon. I sorta hope the Wii games aren't even on the list because I can't even find a Wii game there.

EDIT: I wouldn't be surprised if the list includes mostly PC games or DVD's too along with NDS and GBA games.

Last year I ran out to the clearance but didn't manage to find anything. Soccer moms from sites like Fat Wallet where there by the dozens and had already picked the shelves clean. Of course, there wasn't much to begin with because a lot of the stuff the clearanced out was so old, it went out of stock months or years before the clearance started.

I prefer the clearance deals at smaller stores/chains that don't have as much foot traffic. I made out like a bandit at the Blockbuster/Gamerush clearance a year ago.

If you worked there and knew so much you should know Mondays are price change day each and every week - no need for an action center or newsletter. The only reason they posted it is because of the large number of SKUs involved so the sup could add extra labor if needed.

And I do not think there will be an advance list, last year they posted the list when they gave the heads up, so I do not expect a list this time around (mabe they learned from last year?).

I'm sorry, did I offend you somehow to warrant what reads to be a personal attack? To offer my background, for what it's worth, I only worked Media for a week or two before being transferred to Geek Squad. I worked in the Precinct, and as such didn't work directly with shelf items aside from keeping up with the current computer part prices. I would, however, use lulls to peruse Retail Insider and pay particular mind to those "heads up" notices with large lists of DVDs or games going on sale or clearance. Otherwise, I wouldn't say the average worker bee could give a hoot about a price drop, and even so, not everyone works opening. You and I both know that unlike CC, BB doesn't drop prices on individual items very often. It's relatively rare for only a couple of items to go down. Otherwise, they tend to happen in batches, often by publisher or in a big-get-rid-of-old-stuff-if-you-still-have-it clearance.

EDIT for clarification: By "items" I mean games. Also, I applaud you if you're a responsible employee and have colleagues also on top of their game, but not every store has an all-star staff. My store had some stellar floor sales people, but because I can list "deal hunting" and "consumerism" as some of my hobbies, all notices of sales or new items were probably more significant to me than they, who may just take it in stride as part of the job, just going through the motions.

Fair enough; like I said, I didn't accrue much time on the floor. However, for deal hunters like us, I'm sure the only price drops that people really make a fuss over (no pun intended) are those of $5+, and--please correct me again, if I'm wrong--those tend to happen in the publisher/clearance batch markdowns.

Regardless, I've quit work to focus on grad school, so I hope nobody's expecting information from me anymore. Looks like a few blue shirts in this thread already have that covered.

As for other dealsites CAG is pretty much the best site on the web when it comes to all platforms. You can also check the forums at fatwallet.com and slickdeals.net, although the majority of the video game posted deals there are just copies from CAG (which is why people here tend not to like them). FW/SD do not focus just on games like CAG does, so it's a little rarer to see a gaming post on the front page of their forums.

This is so true. However, I am sure there are many FW/SD people that have had accounts here for quite a while. Many of the people on those sites are hoarders/ebayers. Though the vast majority are just like us and just want a good deal. The worst hoarders don't even post on those sites, they just lurk. All that being said I am sure many cags check those sites when in need of a bigger purchase. Thst id how I found the deal I got on my lcd tv. Bottom line is we all hate the people who blatantly brag about how they scam some of these companies and steal the best deals. Not much you can do about it but when posting a deal be as discrete as possible.

Yeah, don't assume the people with the printed lists are all from FW.. I printed last year's BB clearance and was there shortly after opening, had an awesome haul, too-- I think it was about 20 games for $60 total, after 2-3 trips that week. Although some of the games are still shrinkwrapped. :( (Not many, I just found one today, though. oops)

Last year I lucked out and the guy working in the media area was changing the price tags while I was there and didn't mind a few of us following him around. Not sure if that luck will hold. Plus I just had a massive unexpected car repair so I'm limited by the amount of gift cards I have left.

Like hell! The last Best Buy sale I got there before they opened, went inside and everything on the list was gone (but the tags were still there). I asked an employee and got a smirk and a "nope, we don't have anything left." I asked another employee and she said "JEEZE! How does everyone know about these deals but me!? They dropped a lot of games to 1.99-4.99, which sounds great, but 90% of these titles had already sold out long ago at most stores, except for generic kiddie/movie tie-in crap like Monster House. If anyone walked out of there with one game, they were very lucky, most people got nothing from this sale. I suspect its going to be the same again...

I hope my luck from last year holds out. Last year, I didn't get any of the other $1.99 games I wanted(Samurai Western, 'hot coffee' San Andreas), but I did grab 2 or so Beatmania bundles. And this was at 2-3 in the afternoon with a clearly marked shelf tag saying $1.99 near them.

Last year there were 6 guys with list and each of them had cleared out all the clearance games, what's worst was that some guys had multiple copies of games and they said they were just for trade ins. Well, the worst thing about this list is that most of the games that are going to be on the list are games that have already been discontinued in Best Buy's system. I remember last year when I saw the list that almost 80% of the games that were on the list my store didnt even carry anymore. So I doubt there is going to be much left this year again anyways, but I still have some friends who work overnight there to pull some games aside for me anyways if they see anything good on the list, but I doubt I am coming out with anything.

I went last year when they did this and didn't get there until very late, like 8:00, so everything was gone. But my BB did have things instock so I would love to go early and give it another go.

Well, if Stacked is one of the PS2 games going on clearance this year from BB, it's on the site @ $4.99 already. That's some of the better advice I can give you all, is just keep an eye out on the BB website, keep pages for each game system bookmarked with prices going low to high and check them every time you're online.

I know they had MANY of the games listed for the clearance last year online, but many were sold out well in advance.

Probably like last year, there will be a bunch of games that haven't moved at ANY price, so if you've seen some games sitting and languishing on the shelves @ BB, that's a possible candidate.

I wouldn't doubt if the remaining original Xbox games are targeted for most of this list, including the Front Row games, since it's been 2 years or so since the system was pretty much 'killed off'.

Just a guess on my part, but I'd also venture a guess to say there'll be at LEAST one big bundled game/controller on the list like last year(Beatmania). Just a guess though, so don't take it as anything other than that.

Given that Stranglehold (if thats what is meant by 'stronghold') only came out in August, and is still $59.99 everywhere, I can't see that particular title being a $4.99 one either. doesnt even have to be that complicated. just head to a different register. they dont care unless they think youre trying to resell all of those games for cheap, but if youre just buying them like most of us, they really dont give a damn :bouncy:

Nope. To me it's not a competition or anything that is stressful. I guess everyone needs a hobby while they are at work. Seriously though, if it's a brand new game that I want to play sooner than later, then I'll pay retail, but for most I'm willing to wait because I'll eventually get it for cheaper. A good example is Bladestorm, I want to play that game now, but I know I won't get my $59.99 so I'll wait until I find it for $20 or so... compare that to the $10 I played for my wife's Viva Pinata (used) that I have played many more hours than at first expected, was definitely worth the $10 I paid. Don't make it competitive to see how got the best deal, and it shouldn't be stressful.

Btw I'm one of the hated I guess, I post on FW a lot more then I post here, though I don't cross post, unless it is my own deal, then it's my prerogative to cross post.

I just hope if we get the full list, it isn't posted that in advance like last years where you had FW and SD waiting at the front door. Not that it mattered, all I saw was junk like VeggiTales and a few old sports games. The only thing worth buying was Katamari Damacy at $4.99 which I already had.

I question some of the games on that list like Avatar since it's the new one. I would think the game is popular (1st one must have sold well enough to make a sequel) so why would they clearance a game that hasn't been out for 4 months, unless it won't be at a blowout price like maybe $29.99

As long as you don't demolish a store's inventory, most local CAGs won't gripe about it.

I've had my share of people giving me the business when I've picked up games in quantity for other CAGs, and I've had a very long history of doing that.

No, I absolutely see what you're saying. I meant if people had SPECIAL REQUESTS (like via PM) on particular titles they were interested in but afraid they wouldn't be able to get (especially people who have early jobs). I wouldn't be picking up every copy or even more than two (one for myself and one for a fellow CAGer).

Like I said, my Best Buy has pretty low stock as it is due to Christmas!

Yeah that can be a problem. Last year my local BB didn't have updated price stickers or tags on anything. Without a list, and if everything is tagged full price we'd either have to wait for people to get back and post their finds or just bring up older games to the register and ask for price checks (I wish BB and CC would get price checker machines, even my local CVS has one now and it makes things much easier)

For me, this is something I'm somewhat interested in (with ~$125 in BB Gift Cards) but at the same time I should avoid (massive backlog and Burnout: Paradise coming). If there's something good I may jump, but at this point it would take something on the scale of Gears of War being marked down to $15 to make me jump .... yeah, I'm probably 1 of about 6 people with a 360 that hasn't played that game.

I honestly don't think there are any fellow CAGs in the Midland, MI area... or any FW or SDers. I never have trouble finding stuff on discount...(Knock on wood).

Even back home in GR it is pretty easy to find deals.

I will try and get a couple extras if any Top Selling games are on sale.
My one wish list item is The Godfather for 360.

No I'd rather have the full list be posted here on CAG and fight against the other deal site people than have the prices be marked down in store.

The best feeling is walking up to the counter with an armful of games and having them ring up at 4.96 and 8.96 when they are marked MSRP or less and watching the faces of the employees drop, and then jog back to the section to get their own... ala many TRU deals and BB/CC deals... I've done that multiple times with Xbox original games... I've even been asked for the list I was carrying by an employee so he could find his own.

It's all fair in deal shopping, but I'd rather be well informed than lucky.

In fact, there are employee forums at Best Buy, and on there everyone is discussing that there porbably isn't a list because of the hoarders. The store loses a good deal of money when these happen, especially considering generally the hoarders buy ONLY those clearance games, so BB never gets any revenue from those items.

I simply hid the items that I considered likely on the list that I would be interested in, just in case.

As for price changes not being done before the store opens, We are supposed to have all of them done before the store opens. So prices should always be as they are on the back boards for the games. Possibly there will be a bin, but thats more of a location to location basis type of thing.

And last year's list wasn't 100% accurate either. The safest bet, if you hope just to browse, is go early afternoon. Of course some of the best deals may be gone if word's gotten out before that, though.

Although it sounds like it'll be nothing as good as last year's mega-mega clearance, which was very YMMV but very fun if you had a good BB.

But...if they're permanent clearance markdowns then the store isn't trying to make money off them. Just unload SKUs that aren't selling before inventory is counted. From a $ perspective, they don't care who buys them or how many. It's not like an advertised temporary sale.

I spent the last 6 years living in West Leb (got my phd from Dartmouth) and I can tell you that, while having a very limited inventory, there are nearly zero hoarders there.

Basically, it means the deals are very hit or miss, but you don't have to be there at store opening to find them.
