(if you are going to bash, don't read)

I just saw this really old controller on Wikipedia, and it came to me. I thought "doesn't this look like that idiotic boomerang controller sony had? It was made 1998, so i don't see how sony could have copied it"

Seriously, what's the similarity between these two? I'd like to know.

Well, I guess they kinda look alike. They both have buttons and some sort of d-pad as well.

Yes and no. The idea behind the boomerang was that your hands rested on the sides and it was more comfortable to reach around to the R and L buttons. Your hands would be facing forward.

The sidewinder is meant to be held closer to a traditional controller with all of the action still being controlled by the thumbs. Your hands would be upright.

Very similar designs in appearance but the hand position and resulting stressors are different.

This is a really old comparison. Someone probably made it within 30 minutes of the boomerang being public.

So?

The Dreamcast had triggers before the Xbox.
Numerous motion controlling controllers were made before the Sixaxis/Wii.
The Game.com had a touch screen before the DS.
Ratchet and Clank had spherical worlds before Super Mario Galaxy.

I could make trivial connections between unrelated products for days.
Shall I continue?

This is even older than the MS controller. Used to have to test with it when I worked for Sony during the PS1 days. I think it was made by Logitech or Madcatz or something like that...

Why does this matter? They didn't even go with that controller concept anyway.

There was a another boomerang looking controller I had for the PS2. It was shiny blue and it had grips. I looks fancy but it played like shit. Tried to google an image but can't find one.

EDIT: Found it. The d-pad is as bad as it looks:
