CES 2008: I Like ‘Em Curvy
I personally am not ipressed with this display. It’s actually just 2 DLPs stuck together, and there’s a visible seam in the middle. A true 1-piece cruved monitor would be nice, but this glued-together thing is just… no big deal.

Considering how SC3 sold on a 120M+ PS2 userbase, and how fighting games have been selling for years now anyway, this stunt shows Namco’s paranoia about giving this game the kind of budget it needs to be realized on the HD systems.
From a sales perspective, its a fantastic move.

CES 2008: Bugs Bunny Screws Over HD-DVD (http://gamesblog.ugo.com/index.php/gamesblog/more/ces_2008_bugs_bunny_screws_over_hd_dvd/)
’m glad that the format war is starting to lean over to one of the sides, so we can finally get a winner and have ALL the movies in one format. I hope this means that Blu-Ray will be supported by all studios. And I believe that having a clear winner will help reduce prices. Although competition drives prices down, there will still be competition between the different movie studios to promote their movies and between the different manufacturers of players to provide good prices for the players.
Take regular DVDs as an example. The lack of other media has not stopped prices from going lower and lower since it became the standard for video media distribution.
Also, I am glad that the winner is Blue-Ray, because now that PS3 purchase feels like an even better investment.

OLEDs don’t have the greatest lifespan. They just don’t. Now, let’s say one or two of my keys die on me - dead pixel, whatever.

This is just another example as to why LIVE should atleast be cheaper, if not free, especially for those who backed the original Xbox & 360 from release. We all understand LIVE isn't perfect, hell my internet connection isn't perfect by a long shot, but if I pay for this service I expect a solution faster than what we've seen thus far. With 10, 000, 000users mulitiplied by $40 (an average year of LIVE), there should defintely be enough revenue to keep the service up and going properly.
How many people would've been on the service if it had been free from the get go?

Now while the idea is cool, they look really out of place. Not to mention, why do they need to be console exclusive? Wouldn't it be better to have face offs with them? I think so.
Plus like was stated above. The lightsaber can overpower anything and everyone. You get hit, some limbs be a fallin' and deaths be a happenin'.

Sure, it sucks that Nintendo is stopping Microsoft from releasing the game on XBLA, but it sucks even more that Nintendo can’t release it on their own system. That’s where I want to play it, with it’s online multiplayer glory and all. Hey that’s an idea! Maybe the agreement can be that Nintendo allows Microsoft to release the game on XBLA, for the price of - get this, not money - but the opportunity for Nintendo to release it on WiiWare also! That’d make millions for both companies! Quick, someone get Microsoft and Nintendo on a conference call! I need to share this idea!

I never got into Goldeneye multiplayer very much, though I guess not having a N64 of my own during the time was part of the problem (I only had a PSOne, and Twisted Metal 2 was my multiplayer game of choice. I was more of a PC FPS multiplayer sort of person, playing through Doom over the network, Quake III Arena online, and Codename Eagle (BF1942’s predecessor). I think that the last two online FPS games that I seriously played were Tribes 2 and Battlefield 1942. </pointless rant>
Perhaps people simply yearn for a reminder of simpler FPS times, when the innovations that were made in the game were still new and amazing, and the fond memories associated with their experiences, which is why they want Goldeneye for the current generation. As for this news byte, it is never good to see a classic game held back due to company politics.

I remember Goldeneye fondly. I also remember the exceptional Perfect Dark which was patterned after it. It was fun times but I think I just outgrew it and FPS in general. They feel limited to me nowadays. Sucks that it can’t come out for the fans that would want to play an updated online version though. Oh well.

Here's Mud In Your Goldeneye
My Post:
Goldeneye was a great game back in the day. I’m happy with the fond memories I have of this game with friends, then possibly having them soiled by playing the game again, only with random people on Live screaming or rapping into the headset. I guess it’s not too bad it didn’t make it onto Live.
About the 5 friends referral. I have told a ton of people to check out the podcast both the CAG Cast and CAG Foreplay.
Here’s Mud in your Goldeneye, Or Xbox Loses a Rare Opportunity (http://gamesblog.ugo.com/index.php/gamesblog/more/heres_mud_in_your_goldeneye_or_xbox_loses_a_rare_o pportunity/)
I hope that when they finally come to an agreement, that Nintendo can also release this on the VC. I don’t plan on getting a 360 until the hardware and Live consistently work (I have original xbox). And judging from recent events, that’s not going to be any time soon.

Just because a game is has a place in gaming history doesn’t mean it’s timeless. Rereleasing a 1-stick FPS now would only serve to shatter people’s rose-tinted nostalgia.

CES 2008: Soul Caliber IV: A New Hope
I loved Soul Calibur 2 for the GameCube, and I thought that the inclusion of Zelda was really cool, so I don't see any reason why they won't do a great job with the Star Wars characters. Yoda will be balanced somehow, as there not just going to throw him out there and tell everyone good luck.
I'm not interested enough in fighting games or Star Wars to buy this, but I'm renting this or borrowing it from a friend for sure so that I can play as Yoda. It should be fun.

Wombat seemed like heavy apologist for Ubisoft, Sony, and Midway in this podcast. It's like he was trying to stick up for them so that they might rub their chins and go...
You know that Wombat. He doesn't seem so bad. Maybe we should send him some free stuff so that he can promote it on that podcast of his.
Fact is this Wombat. It's a douchebag move. You ever have had someone be a douchebag to you? It's not good, no matter how much your try to rationalize it.
Imagine if you Cheapy and you were doing a podcast and you said something Cheapy didn't like. Well Cheapy decides to cut you off in the middle of the podcast and he continues on without you. Perhaps he even calls one of the Shipwrecks to come and take your place during the podcast. Would you be all right with that? Sure you can laugh the notion off in a dismissive manner, but fact is that it's Cheapy's podcast and he can do whatever he wants and the only way he'll let you back on is if you do the things he tells you to do and say the things he wants you to sya. How would you react?
Bottom line, when you come down to the ethics of things, it's just not cool. I hope you make note that you understand this. Those three companies acted as cowards and I hope more people call them out as such. EGM could have said that they would be nicer to the companies and given then higher scores but instead they told the companies to screw off and kept their ethical integrity intact.
Unfortunately, Wombat can't, or perhaps won't, match and understand this integrity.
Here’s Mud in your Goldeneye, Or Xbox Loses a Rare Opportunity
"As a 3D shooter, the game hasn’t aged too well. While the promise of online multiplayer is interesting, I probably would’ve passed anyway. Still as CheapyD recently ranted, XBLA needs more substantial games, and this would’ve been another step towards that.

I’m completely with you guys. I’m sorry, but this feels like Namco is selling out (again). Though I’ll hold off on any serious criticism since the game hasn’t come out yet. I just think a better idea would have been to have a separate Star Wars game which uses the Soul Calibur engine.

yeah. I have to agree that this game hasn't aged well. It was great back in the day, and it really revolutionized the way FPS's were made on consoles, but after going back and playing it again now it's really hard to enjoy the game in more than an intellectual way.

I don’t mind a game being difficult, as long as it’s not difficult in a way that is cheap. As long as it’s being fair about it, I’m content.
But I would rather have a shorter than longer game, I’m liking this trend of games being around 10 - 15 hours long and offsetting the game’s short length by having a fun and addictive multi-player component.

From the keyboard post
This may be the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen.
I’m not much of a computer gamer, but don’t pc games all let you configure the keyboard however you want, and nobody is going to be looking down at the keyboard to look at the keys while playing anyway. The only possible use is for someone who uses multiple languages that have different characters, but I assume a keyboard for a language with entirely different characters would be best with a totally different layout (more or fewer keys?).

This isn’t a system seller or anything, so I’m not sure why they can’t figure out a way to split the profits.
Unlike a lot of people, I think this game would still hold up today because it is such mindless fun. Games like CoD4 are great, but all the perks, weapons, air strikes, etc. can get a little complicated. Goldeneye is a simple, pick up and play FPS that is just fun.

Did you want to play Goldeneye on the 360? Yeah, I did too. Especially with the online multiplayer. Quick tangent, when I was in college (all the way back in a time when consoles ran on dinosaur blood), my roommates and I would play Rare’s masterpiece quite often. You see, the loser would have to do the dishes. Poor Doug, I bet he still has dishpan hands. But I digress. You see, the fine folks at 1up.com were kind enough to spill beans on how the deal went down. And by down, I mean down in flames. Not that is it a shocker, but Msoft and the big N just could not reach a mutually beneficial financial agreement. I just keep telling myself that memory is better than a Live Arcade rehash. If you don’t believe me, just play the demo for Tron.

I feel your pain Wombat. I think we have two things working against us. We have day jobs and we were born before the 90’s or even the 80’s.
I myself have given up trying to compete with the big boys or little boys as the case probably is. Maybe if there is a good match making system that would set me up with players of similar skill I’d give it a try.
If you really love the game then I’d say keep plugging away at it. Finding a mentor would also help with your game. Maybe we could create a grey gamers guild. Well I’m not grey yet, but I’m sure it’s around the corner. We could all play whenever we can be pulled away from work, wife, kids or grownup life.

I would agree that there are some remakes that are just horrible, but I just can’t find myself saying no to GoldenEye. If online play was added to the game it would be an easy purchase for 1200 and maybe even 1600 points.

"Here is my suggestion, Try playing “headquarters”, It the combat is closer therefore you do not have to worry about being shoot from different angles(for the most part). Stick with it though as it gets better the more you play and get used to the different ways the guns feel. if you are having trouble try using the mp5 with deep impact and the increased dmg perk. Good Luck. "

Dont get discouraged, man. I felt the exact same way about the game, because in reality it is unbalanced for the first few levels and the matchmaking is one of the weakest parts of the game. But level 6 is where it starts to level out a lot, because you unlock the “side missions” to get the scopes and such. Also, the game relies heavily on knowing the maps, so after playing a few rounds on each or focusing on a few maps you should start to see some improvement. Good luck, maybe ill see you online .

It’s such a shame, but at least now people won’t be struck by the horrid reality that Goldeneye hasn’t aged too well in this past decade.
They’d have to practically rebuild the entire game to make it relevant to an audience that has seen the likes of Half-Life, Halo and Call of Duty.
It’s just too bad that Microsoft is more hurt by this than Nintendo: the Carnival Games crowd doesn’t care if they can’t play of those “violent murder simulator games” from 1997.

Your post reminded me of how Microsoft touted the new features of 360 XBox live and how things like the star system and zones (pro, recreation) would cleanup the original Xbox live experience and make it more family friendly.
If you ask me the ‘quality’ of players on Xbox live are exactly as bad if not worse on the new Xbox live and as far from family friendly as humanly possible.

With the scopes, stick to the red dot and avoid the ACOG, at least until the patch comes out. I find it much more effective.

I’m with Beano Rx on this one - I find myself trying to avoid the general online community more often than not. I leave my headset plugged in, but only to keep the voice chat from blaring over the main speakers (I have voice chat set to “headset only,” but it defaults back to speakers if you unplug your headset - a “feature” that I absolutely loathe). I must admit, however, that I experienced a perverse sense of satisfaction the first time I received a scathing VOICE message accusing me of “cheating” in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. I small doses, that sort of thing makes for some great entertainment!

"I’ll take your complaints and raise you a logical explanation. I prefer to have it this way. I’ve already got way too much stuff filling up my hard drive, so having it on the disk itself is more convenient to me and better than the alternative of buying a bigger hard drive for $180. Also, for the developer, they don’t have to pay twice to have the game and the content certified separately. It’s up to the developer to decide what content is included in the retail game and what content gets released as DLC. If you don’t like the content they offer then why bother whining when something is released as DLC? If it’s not worth the money to you, then just don’t buy it."

Comment on the COD4 Post...keep up the good work.
Wombat,
I feel you on this one man. I thought that Xbox was supposed to have some kind of “True Skill” matchmaking system accross all games but I get murdered by people who have obviously been playing far longer than I have. For me it takes the fun out of the game and I don’t understand why more developers don’t follow the “Halo” model. The only thing I can think of is that I have to keep losing for the system to determine how bad I suck and put me with the other shitty players. The problem with that of course is I don’t want to spend a week getting my ass kicked before I can enjoy the game.

Ugh, its so tough playing on XBLA when you’re out of your high school years and the rest of life gets in the way. Nothing like jumping into a game you’ve never played before, getting destroyed while learning the ropes, and being mocked by racist, biggoted 12-year-olds.

Charging for items already on the disc is one thing, but openly admitting “hey, we’re just trying this out on you guys, to see how much you’ll buy” seems like a classically bad move.
Of course, this is Sega we’re talking about.

So finally a developer annnounces it. Yes, they are indeed with holding data from a game at release for the sole purpose of milking it for more money via digital download - or worse digital unlock. Bollocks. If you’ve got the content, just release it to us the first time we pay for it! Unbelievable…
Grumble grumble.

I just wish that PSN’s store was as polished as buying something on XBL. It seems that everything takes extra steps to purchase (especially when, for example, you buy a Rock Band track and then have to go back to the main store level when all you want to do is buy another Rock Band track).

I think 2008 really will be PS3’s year for some better penetration (har har). 2007 I bought a Wii in January and a 360 in September. It gave me a taste of HD/surround sound gaming that uses my setup real nice, and I crave more. So I think all these great upcoming games will push me over the edge and get a PS3 this year.

I think the handheld numbers are particularly interesting. The PSP is selling extremely well but the DS continues to dominate it. The software numbers on the PSP have to concern Sony. Piracy is killing PSP game sales.

I *love* the Microsoft line graph. 3 lines, that must be Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony. Ooops, wait, what is that? Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360’s lead over Playstation 3? What? Since when did graphs become so hard to read that I needed a line to show the difference between two lines?

From "Virtua Fighter: Actual Rip-Off":
considering I have the PS3 version of VF5, this doesn’t directly effect me, but this is still a disturbing thread. However, DLC that’s ON THE ACTUAL DISK is still a load of crap. Take the upcoming SC4 with Vader and Yoda. The PS3 is gonna have Vader, but Yoda will be DLC (and V.V. on the 360)? If I pay 60 bones for a game I want everything that’s on the freaking disk, not have to pay another 10 to get the rest of what’s on it.

Does anyone think Sony’s online store will improve in this generation or will it take the PS4 to make it better integrated? Example: Original Xbox live was kinda crap, but the 360 really tightly integrated DLC, friends lists, and achievements. PSN seems more of a separate component added to the PS3.

Although I do appreciate the downloadable love Sony has been giving us, what I’d really like to see is a power feature similar to that of the 360. I love being able to schedule a bunch of downloads before bed and not worry that the console will be on all night.
