New Challenge Rooms:

Extra challenge rooms to unlock for those that want some more to play through:
To access the hidden Challenge Room, just enter the following code at the title screen, where the BCR logo is shown, before the intro starts again. You can use the D-pad or the analogue stick for the directions, and they'll work on the PC version too, provided you have a controller.
Aaron Sedillo's Room
Xbox 360: Right, Down, Left, Up, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, Y, Y, X, X, Start
PS3: Right, Down, Left, Up, L1, R1, Triangle, Triangle, Square, Square, Start
We've also hooked up (hah!) with several different websites and games publications to offer their own exclusive rooms too - and whereas I could beat Aaron's room without too much fuss, these have the difficulty level pumped all the way up to "Devil May Cry 3". Downloadable content? Bah! This is how we used to give away extra content back in the day! Be warned: you'll have to re-input the code when you restart your system, and these work in English language only.

Game Overview
Classic side-scrolling gameplay is reporting back for duty with Bionic Commando Rearmed, a remake of the classic NES game, coming to Xbox LIVE® Arcade, PlayStation® Network and PC in spring 2008.
20 years after the 8-bit classic was released, Bionic Commando Rearmed recreates the world of the original with a complete "2.5D" visual revamp. Bionic Commando Rearmed preserves the original's mix of swinging and shooting in an intense 2D side-scroller, all to the tune of a brand-new soundtrack based on the classic 8-bit music from the NES masterpiece,
But Rearmed is far more than just a remake - it features all-new modes such as the 2-player co-op play, smarter enemy AI, new bionic arm abilities, new weapons, bigger bosses and online rankings. Faithfully sticking to the story of the NES game, Bionic Commando Rearmed tells the story of Nathan "R.A.D." Spencer's first mission, sent in to retrieve captured agent Super Joe from the hands of the Imperials. Fans of the original story can expect to see all the characters from the NES version, as well as the memorable moments that made the title so popular with fans. Rearmed will also link-up to its 3D "big brother" coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, with unlockable content, in-game hints and a story that spans both games.
Game Features:
Classic Bionic Commando side-scrolling gameplay, updated with new abilities, weapons and bosses
2-player co-op mode
Total modern visual and audio revamp
Cross-game interoperability - complete specific parts of Bionic Commando Rearmed to unlock new content and hints for the Bionic Commando sequel
In-game art designed by one of Capcom's most talented artists, Toshiaki Mori

Despite the screenshot, nowhere in that text does it say it's the NES version.
I'll buy it either way, but my bet's on an arcade remake.

I originally had this and replaced it with what's on the OP because it had more detailed info:
The latest issue of Famitsu has revealed that Capcom plans to release a remake of the NES Bionic Commando on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network.
The original Japanese version of Bionic Commando for the NES was called Top Secret: Hitler's Revival and had you fighting futuristic Nazis, with the final boss being Adolf Hitler. In the U.S., the game was renamed Bionic Commando: Master D Revival Plan

I know! I totally forgot about that part until I saw it. Freaking sweet nod to the original. I'm psyched. Mostly because this could be the start of an awesome trend if this does well. It makes perfect sense to release them near one another for the hype and the retro fix. Plus a total remake? As long as the new game doesn't suck I'm sold.

The developers are asking for feedback on what price they should sell the game for - $10 or $15.
Poll on the main page: http://www.bioniccommando.com/en
Blog, for comments: http://bioniccommando.com/us/blog_entries/view/96
You CAGs know what to do ;)
While I can understand their desire to properly represent a title of high quality and to "legitimize" 2D gaming in the current generation, the reality is that a $15 price point would turn off way too many gamers to make it worthwhile. I imagine that would shut out a large portion of those borderline curiosity buys... those who would have probably bit at $10.

I'd probably still bite at $15 just because it's Bionic Commando.

The NES era was definitely sink or swim, but I remember this game being pretty fair. Oh, and also ridiculously awesome. (Come on, bring back Hitler!)
Now games like Strider can stay buried forever for all I care. That game punched you in the face, banged your mom, and asked you to enjoy it with a smile on your face.

I guess I'm getting this on ps3 now then. That size limit restriction is just going to hinder more and more games. They say they have it so games aren't big and don't take a while to download, but if someone wants to play this game and is willing to buy it then what is another few minutes waiting while it is being downloaded.

NOBODY.So true. They have their heads up their asses. And their "pick-up and play" excuse is bullshit. CastleVania SOTN, for example, is not "pick-up-and-play" in the slightest. Neither is a long-ass board game like Catan. And neither is a fucking Xbox Original game... which doesn't fall under the XBLA umbrella, sure, but how important is the label really? (important enough to be dicks over, apparently, but it's a rhetorical question.)

Even if I owned a PS3...I'd still get it on XBLA simply for the achievements. Superb graphics would be nice, but this game is all about gameplay.

It's good to see where some people stand. I personally do not have a PS3 and could really care less about playing on my PC (I'm a console gamer...and to be honest the only game I truly played on PC was FFXI which was a console game to begin with).
I'm with Linkin, where the achievements are a plus to me...something about it actually makes me want to go back to a game to complete it and gain these pointless things...but it's addicting heh. Not to mention I still think it would look nice...I might have my HDTV by the time it comes out, but it is indeed about the gameplay...not to mention it's not like it won't look good as it is either. Still...from what it seems there should be something done about increasing this limit. Some future games might suffer.

I asked Judd for more information about “Rearmed,” which hadn’t been shown to reporters before, as far as I could tell. He mentioned that the Xbox Live Arcade version will include a leaderboard for special challenges, but that the PlayStation Network PS3 version will have better textures, because PSN doesn’t force the size restrictions that XBLA does (a Microsoft executive told me a day later that the company hadn’t been aware of the “BC” issue and would work with Capcom to address it). Judd said the PC version of “Rearmed” might have extra content. All versions of the game will also have “Metal Gear Solid”-style virtual reality training missions.

I LOVE the NES Bionic Commando and am really looking forward to Rearmed. From the preview, this was looking like a release day purchase.
But for me, it's either download on XBLA or not at all, so if MS gimps the XBLA version, I may not buy it (or wait for a sale). I have a stack of other games to play and movies to watch, so if Capcom/MS can't give me the experience I feel like I was shown in the preview, I suppose I can wait.
It remains to be seen if there will be a difference between XBLA, PSN, and PC. I sure hope there isn't (particularly if they charge the same amount for each).

No file size restrictions for Rearmed and SSFII:THD:
In January of 2007, Microsoft made a special exception for Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which could not stay under the then 50MB cap. In May of '07, realizing the 50MB cap was stifling development of original games, Microsoft pushed the limit to 150MB. It's possible that even this size is about to become a thing of the past as two Capcom titles have been granted special permission to ignore Microsoft's restrictions.
Both Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix and Bionic Commando Rearmed will exceed 150MB. Capcom said that Rearmed holds far too much content to fit the current limits. To meet standards, Rearmed would need to shed some of the bonus material that would still appear on the PlayStation Network and PC versions. According to Capcom, SFII could not run in 1080p if not for Microsoft loosening the file size cap.
Bionic Commando Rearmed arrives this spring on XBLA, with Super SF II Turbo HD Remix coming in the summer.

I just don't understand why a game has to have that file restriction but I can download map packs for twice that size. Seriously, we're on high speed internet, we download videos and trailers on PC 4 times that size.
I dunno about you, but I wouldn't mind starting a game download and going to eat lunch or something while it runs.

MS is still trying to be inclusive with people that haven't purchased hard drives and only have so much space on a memory card for games.
To them, I say too bad. You bought the cheaper version of the console and that means you've sacrificed some things for cost. That's fine, but they shouldn't expect to be able to d/l every single XBLA game that is put up.

I hadn't even thought of that, and to be honest, F them. If they want to have the full experience and play the games, get a 20 gigger. :)

I never understood why XBLA titles were singled out, while the vast majority of Marketplace content absolutely crushes the 150MB limit. It seems pretty silly to push HD Movie rentals and then give Capcom shit for going over 150 MB. Glad someone slapped some sense into them!

Confirmed to be 800pts:
When deciding what should be the price of Bionic Commando Rearmed, Capcom asked the community how much they would pay for the game. Now the publisher has finally announced the price of this remake.
We first asked the question to our community about how much they would pay for Bionic Commando Rearmed here on the Bionic Commando community site.
Some people said it was stupid. Human nature dictates that people will choose the cheaper of two prices. Some people said we hated money. Well, while the results may suggest that $10 is the sweet spot for most people (in the US the final tally was 83% in favor of the $10 price point and 17% in favor of the $15 price point), there is another side of the story which wasn’t represented by the poll results – and that is the huge number of user comments that we received, where a majority were suggesting they would pay $15 or even $20 for the game.
When I first posed the question it wasn’t about whether people wanted something to be cheaper or more expensive. That answer is obvious. It was about whether people would be willing to pay more to support high-quality 2D gaming. 2D games are a bigger risk (no, they are not necessarily cheap to make. BCR has plenty of 3D models and uses much of the same tech and physics as the 3D version) because they are a harder sell. However, when we started the community site it was all about hearing from Bionic Commando fans and connecting with our community. The poll says $10 so that’s what it will be. Since the title will have to do quite well at that price point to break even (no, I’m not going to give you a specific number), I guess we have to roll the dice and see where they land.
Oh well, I’m tired of meta-emulated crap. These old 2D titles are where games were born. With some solid adjustments, new modes, and updated graphics they can still provide a hell of a lot of fun. Just updating the graphics isn’t paying them enough respect.
Besides, I’d rather fail having created the best game I could, even if the end result doesn’t justify 2D games like this in the future. So $10 it is for the XBLA and PSN versions (we haven’t decided on the PC version because it may have some additional content that can be downloaded later).
Let’s ride this train to the end of the line. Thanks for your feedback and your support.

New info on MP:
Bionic Commando: Rearmed will allow players to face off in a 2 - 4 person multiplayer match featuring:
• 4 different selectable characters, each with their own unique parameters
• 10 multiplayer stages utilizing props based on the original game, including spikes, conveyer
belts, slime blobs, and quicksand
• 3 different modes to play including Deathmatch, Last Man Standing, and a Bionic Commando
Rearmed original, "Don't Touch The Floor"
• Play in free for all battles, or in teams of any combination you can think of
• 9 different pick-ups that can turn the tide of battle in your favor
This coupled with the previously announced modes - co-op campaign mode, challenge rooms, and the hacking mini game - means that you are getting a lot of game for a great price.

Made this post in the PS3 thread (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4359236&postcount=28)and figured it's appropriate for this thread, as well.
Has this been delayed? I noticed this strange wording on Capcom's post on the PlayStation Blog and it's making me wonder what's up since this was supposed to be out this month:
Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3, a chaotic destroy-everything-in-site arcade shooter, should hit the store in early June. 1942: Joint Strike, the follow up to the 194X series, arrives in July, followed by Bionic Commando Rearmed, Super Street Fighter (http://shop.capcom.com/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=DisplayCategoryProductLis tPage&Env=BASE&Locale=en_US&SiteID=capcomus&categoryID=3954300) II Turbo HD Remix, and a pirate themed RTS called Plunder!

I know. It seems like every week of this Xbox Arcade has been praise overload.
First Geometry Wars 2 hits a 9.0 and is proclaimed one of the the best download games on Live.
Then Braid hits and is more critically acclaimed than user reviewed at 9.2 (1200 point backlash) and then this is called one of the best games
Now the IGN review for Bionic Commando calls it probably the best download game on Live. 9.4
It's like when Homer Simpsons became a food critic. I never realized everything was so good!

The original NES game is not frustratingly difficult, though it has challenging areas here and there. This version is actually easier as it offers saving and unlimited continues, a life meter from the start (rather than having to collect items to activate it), and an Easy difficulty.

Challenge Room 17 is a major bitch. I didn't even realize I took 45 tries to beat it until I actually beat it, though someone managed to beat it on their second try, which is insane.
KingBroly
08-13-2008, 07:35 AM
I was mainly referring to Dragon Run (the one where you have to dip below the level and swing to start then constantly swing to get to the end) because that took me a good 22 tries. Challenge 8 is a lot easier (I'm ranked like 124th in the world in that one) and only took me...6 tries I wanna say.
Oh, and stuff like what the demo did kinda does make me a bit angry.
FriskyTanuki
08-13-2008, 07:47 AM
That's the one I'm referring to, with all of the spikes that you need to drop and swing a few times to make it through safely.
If you haven't noticed, there's a video you can download from within the game if you bought it from the database. Just go to the database and click on BC Trailer to download it. That's where you can find the code to unlock the Retro Skin for BC.
Edit: It looks like somebody's already beaten the game from looking at the leaderboards, which took them about 1:42 to beat it.

After being up all night, my brother and I played through the first "half" of the game (the parts before Area 8), and are now taking a break till later.
What fun in Co-Op! The split-screen is kinda disorienting at first, but a very welcome addition! Just like good old Toejam and Earl! XD
Pi Pi Pi...
The Demo speak was quite funny. The whole game is constantly making fun of itself ("Bionic Commando? I hope you're better than your name!"), and I appreciate this bit of humor. I've had good laughs at silly mistakes and such while swinging along, and it's just such a personality-fillex experience.
Let me mention I'm suprised at how well the multiplayer is put together, too. It doesn't feel "Tacked on" in my limited play of deathmatch; The amount of stages offered where more than I expected, and I like the way the wep pows float in. They don't just appear on screen out of the middle of nowhere, in some random corner, or anything like that...
I can use the Analog with no difficulty in this game, who cares about the 360 d.pad? The game now even lets you control the speed of your walk with analog.
The game is an awesome, high class re-visioning of a classic. More like this, please!

Man. The controls are really awkward...I'm kind of rethinking this purchase. We'll see.
I agree. I hate how if you want climb up a ledge you have to press B to shoot your arm and then press B again to go up and then press up so that you can mount the ledge. It's unnecessarily complicated.

Also guys, remember to hit up Area 0 because there's a gun upgrade there allowing you to fire 3 shots. Makes the game a bit easier..

I thought so too with the way people were talking about it at E3. This is disappointing, and it's not an instant buy for me anymore. I thought the demo was alright but I have a lot of games to play right now. I'll have to wait until I hear some CAG impressions and read some more reviews. Also I'm wondering if it's going to be some sort of giveaway when the 3D counterpart comes out. I'm sure it depends on rather or not it'll continue to sell between now and then.

Two things to say on this:
1- That's what you get for not doing research before buying it.
2- This is also further proof that IGN is full of morons and dumbshits. There have been several games that they docked points from for not having co-op over live. But in this case they mention it, and then excuse it for the developer.
Every game has features that didn't make it in (due to time constraints) that reviewers bitch about and give it lower scores for. How nice it would be for every developer to have the reviewer actually excuse them and give them a pass. Now that's a crock of shit.

The more I play it, the more I'm not liking it. Example. On a secret level involving moving platforms, you're supposed to drop down to a moving platform from another moving platform while ducking. Here's the problem. 75% of the time, YOU CANNOT SEE THE PLATFORM BELOW YOU. You are falling blindly, forcing you to quickly react or die insantly.
And sometimes, even if you grab, it breaks connection so you die anyway. Who thought that was a good idea? WHO?

I agree. I've only came across one map, the one with a tank & motorcycle shooter at the end. Are there more?
I think this is an awsome remake. I love the music, and the classic gameplay is still there, but it feels faster. I know it's been addressed already but one of the only problems I have is not having the ability to look up or down. That would help platforming instead of trying to guess. But after playing the level you kinda memorize everything.

Loved the original and currently loving this. Would have got it whether there had been significant changes or not. I agree the controls can feel wierd and 'awkward' at first but thats the way it is when you're first getting used to a control system you aren't used to. This i'm assuming is why the opening levels don't involve too much technical swinging and grabbing. Really looking forward to playing through and seeing whether the changes to the final boss are anything to shout about, after all the end boss int he original was a joke. Ahh... nostalgiax10 ftw

I've actually gotten use to it. But the game still does force you into doing unnecessarily difficult swings and movements even though it looks like the jump should be easy. I never played the original so IDK if the NES version did this as well.
I have another complaint though like the other CAG. These levels are A LOT bigger than what you just see on the screen. I wish it gave me a Metroid style map layout of the level instead of forcing me to guess which way is the correct way. In Area 2 I got to some area, died there, and I have NO idea how to get there again. I just took the short route to the boss.

I'm not having problems with the levels like getting lost or anything. I just want to explore the whole thing. But this whole guessing where to go, and depending on blind falls is annoying. I just wish I could pause the game and look at a map is all. They can hide the little secret areas even a la Metroid.
I just looked at the Area 2 map, and I missed the entire bottom left half of the level. That's stupid. And looking at it, I can see why. I would've had to rely on a blind fall to get there.

That's a funny thing about a game like this, and Megaman 9, looking at it's achievements. The secrets and difficult areas of this game are made as a response to the crazy, pointless actions that fans of the old games used to do. Having a blind jump lead to something is like a reward to all the people who want to truly do all they can in the stages. You run into things at points that you previously imagined "there should be something THERE!". Well, now, there is!
I dunno if I'd like to see an actual map added to the game, not initially, anyway. The ridiculous feel of "Man, this place is stupid big!" is one of those feelings I loved in the NES game. I always found it impressive. I wouldn't mind if the developers met the idea half way, though. Maybe giving a stage preview at the start of the stage, or letting you look over the maps in a viewer, after completing them.
Let me take that time to mention that I love the games Database. Every game needs these! It's fun, like the developers notes they used to have in the back of Working Designs games; Extra info that helps one get that much more into the game, and lets you see the true depth behind the work that went into it.

I think I'm going to have to play this with an arcade stick. Too much frustration in trying to convince the 360 controller that I actually want the grappling arm to shoot out in the direction I'm holding. It's bad enough that there is a learning curve on the control scheme and the game wants you to be precise in parts.

Alright the game is not as hard to control anymore. I guess I was playing wrong. I went through the challenge room tutorial and it made things a bit easier. I was trying to shoot the arm diagonally by holding the stick diagonally but now I realize that shooting diagonally is the default, so you only have to press B WITHOUT any input from the stick.
There was this high up spot in area 00 that took forever to get to and now I fucked up my save game. Ergh. There is a simple puzzle but it required two people so I turned on a second controller and unlocked friendly fire...what a lame reward!. Well once I got my reward I wanted to go back to playing single player but I can't I have to start over since it converted my save to a co-op save. Ugh.

The controls do kinda suck. There's a learning curve, which in itself in pretty bad that a game like this would require a learning curve on directional controls. I found it odd that there were literally tutorials on how to use the bionic arm. It would be like having a jumping tutorial in Super Mario Bros. This is how Bionic Commando is supposed to play. You can liken it to pressing up and forward to climb stairs in Castlevania or Mario constantly sliding around. That's just how this game works. Silly quirks.

My guess is the load times probably come from decompression routines. You're essentially unzipping game resources and then putting them into memory every time you play. Which is where PSN has the edge, because you download an installer, which then uncompresses the much larger end product onto your HDD, hence quicker load times.

Lol. I didn't mean for that to sound elitist but I don't like hearing silly complaints on things that are supposed to be the way that they are. And yes, for this version of Bionic Commando, playing with a friend to me is playing the 'real' game. If I or my friend ran out of lives it got kind of cold and lonely. Enemies died quicker, Bosses weren't as diabolical, and no one could play crash test dummy anymore. It's just such a fun co-op experience.
I think that I'm going to find a Hori EX Pad Turbo. The 360 D-Pad is so wrong. Microsoft just doesn't give a flying shit about fixing it either. It's a shame really.

That Area 11 boss annoyed me too, lol. It kept irking my brother and I, because we felt it was us being impatient that got us killed, and not the boss just being hard... I love it when fighting bosses in old school games have a "rhythm" to beating them. It makes it memorable for years... when you can hear the sound effects in your head, calling back to when you should react, and when each action should land... Grin really seems to understand these little nuances of classic gaming.

I had really high expectations for this game since the original was one of my favorite games of all time. And so far I guess it's met them. The swing mechanics are damn near perfect, and the amount of extras thrown in is wonderful. I'm sitting at 100/200 after most of the day yesterday playing and the previous night when it was released. The challenges are very hard. After clearing through challenge 16 or so I think, i came back and continued in the regular game and it seemed almost too easy with my newely refound kick ass swinging skills.

I want to unlock the acheivment where you go through the entire level without shooting your gun. Anyone done this yet? What's the best level to tackle this one? And does using your gun against the boss count? Some bosses you have no choice.

I haven't done the Gunless thing yet, but here is my guess: First Stage, Use grenades. Swing through enemies, toss them and barrels, kill the boss with tossed barrels and grenade pitches.
Also, any stages where you have to kill a platoon leader as a boss, just toss a grenade at him, and it's instant death for the over-medal'd fool.

Seriously, I was hyped for the fight, then I lobbed a grande and it was over in 2 seconds. But I'll try the first level for the "no-gun" Acheivment.

No Gun Tips
Once you get super claw, go back to stage 1 and do it. awesome note that makes it much easier, grenades don't count so use em to your hearts content.
I just went through slowly and surely using my claw for all kills, if done right, theres a path left once inside with a blue guy you can grab and throw to break a barrier, then at the end, you can grab the rocket launcher guy and tos him to break that barrier to the boss door.
The boss use grenades once you get him on the ground.

I am loving BC:RA and never played the original back in the NES days (was to busy with Low G man probably). Anyway is it me or is this game more difficult than anything released in recent years that is "Current/Next gen"?
Uh you must not have played N+.

^ Indeed they're tough. You would think the higher the number the more difficult but that's not always the case. I easily breezed through the 40's but had a lot of problems with the 20's.

Alright I have beat all challenges up to challenge 24—those are the only ones I have unlocked at the moment—but challenge 18 Trial and Error still eludes me. I can get to the part with the three single blocks after you fall from the ceiling. I cannot figure out how the hell I am supposed to grab the right most block without slamming into the wall.
Can anyone help?

Just picked this up today! I had time to briefly learn the controls before having to head off; but it seems to be a pretty interesting looking game. I thought that I had played it on the NES originally, but now, I don't think that I ever did!!

Fuck my ass. I've gotten to the Area 1 boss twice now and have accidentally hit A and shot my gun out of habit because of the load screens.
Got it using only 1 life GG.

I fucking hate the world map.
Go to area 8. Shit it went right. Area 8. No! it went up and I have to fight in one of those top down missions. Alright asshole go diagonally, I want to go to area 8. Fuck! I went to area 5 and now I have to fight in the top down mode again. Finally area 8—oh fuck, not another top down piece of shit!
