Ok, thanks dudes. But sonuvabitch, when I went to place my order I got to step 4, and for some odd reason when i hit submit it brought me to my cart and said it was empty and I was like "WTF?!?!"


I had grabbed the last copy of one of the Full Metal Panic Dvd's so of course it says OOS >.>
I basically had to go back in my browser and add them all again, but others were OOS also so I just said screw it and picked up 10 items -_-

Got all the Kaleidostar volumes they had in stock (which ironically was 10), never saw the ending and figured why not. The price is so cheap that even if you dump it in the worst case scenario of ebay you're bound to get at least half your money back heh.

Sucks that i need to find the first seasons volume 4 and 6 though. I'm sure i'll forget and never pick them up lol. Hell i still need to find Noir volumes 4 and 6 and FMP 2 and 6 from a few years ago.

a lot of businesses are in states that have property taxes that are calculated at the end of December/January so they dump lots of inventory at the end of the year to lower what they have to give the government. ) Hence the number of huge sales over January by almost every big retail chain.

Geneon sales will probably never happen again, keep in mind they no longer produce anime DVDs for the US.

Thanks OP. I'm not personally an anime fan, but they have some fine live action films included in this deal that I can't find in any stores around here.

To those who flip, do be careful. I've ordered DVDs from them before and the numbers shown does not always mean it's in stock. I believe that they get the orders first and then make the purchase or something like that. The last batch of DVDs I ordered was held up for 5 or 6 weeks because they could not get something or other for a while. If the same thing happens again, then your transworld sale could be over with. So buy stuff you don't mind keeping, eh?

Yeah, you definitely sound to have tastes close to mine. Don't expect a pure comedy like an Excel Saga from Nanaka 6/17 as it's more of a drama about maturity. Sure, it's funny at the start when she regresses to a 6 year old mindset, but they get over that silliness fast. It gets full of dramatic tention with a love triangle where a female friend of Nanaka is jealous that a guy she likes prefers childish Nanaka rather than herself who is the total opposite. Then the last part is their trying to get Nanaka to want to be an adult again for some pretty important reason (passing college exams or something), but she is so resistant to this. By the end of the series it should make you reflect on maturity. Sadly I'm pretty sure most people would not really care for it but I'm giving it a 50% chance you'd like it.

UFO Ultramaiden is far more funnier, but honestly I am into that one only for the catgirl transformations and not the space princess Tenchi Muyo-esque mumbo jumbo that is the main story. I could never really stay focused on that one unless a catgirl was on the screen. (see my avatar) LOL Hopefully dubbed I can pay better attention to it.

Yeah, ever since I cut back on my game purchases, I have been more apt to spend for limited editions for anime when they come out. I also got all the LE versions of the Black Lagoon volumes. The Haruhi volumes just came with so much cool stuff that I couldn't resist.

I'm more impressed by the Ranma 1/2. I have no idea how to start collecting those. :applause:

Man, Ranma was something I was really wary of spending a lot of money for, but it was worth every penny. I am a huge Rumiko fan. I was lucky to find the original season sets at about $75 each on Overstock in 2005. I even made a topic about it on CAG somewhere. They also had the OVA set. I got the movies from Rightstuf IIRC. The first time I went through all the Ranma episodes, movies and OVA was one of the most enjoyable anime experiences I ever had. I love anything that can make me laugh outloud. The have thinpak sets out now that are substantially cheaper, but they omit extras from the DVDs IIRC.

BTW, I own all the Ranma manga as well. Probably my favorite anime/manga ever. :) I might take a pic of that tonight.

Now I need to work on Maison Ikkoku (I only have season 1 right now) and Urusei Yatsura!

I'd have an easier time upgrading my shelves if Ikea hadn't discontinued their Journalist line- 1 more small side brace and I could move the big cabinet somewhere else. :cry: The only pictures of my cabinet I have are in my entry for Ryoko's blog (Ryoko being a world-traveling doll.) You can see 'em here (http://ryoko.pinky-street.com/?section=news&cmd=details&newsid=95), last 2 pics. Each pull-out shelf holds around 50-60 DVDs (varies by artbox width.) Do keep in mind, that's only about half my anime, the rest is in cardboard storage boxes at the foot of my bed, waiting for better lodgings.

Seeing all of your collections has made me feel wholly inadequate. I have very few anime DVDs. Buying the 10 from this ADV sale will probably double my current collection. However, last time I checked, DVD sets were on the order of at least 100 bucks or more. I looked around and it seems they now have these 'ThinkPaks', which are considerably more affordable.

I still find the whole thing questionable. Why is a ThinkPak set only like 40 bucks when a single DVD is 30?

Also, while surfing around for more anime to pick up at Buy.com, many of the sets I was looking at were offered not by Buy.com but by Movieweb.com. They seem to consistently offer the best prices. Has anyone ever done business with them?

The thinpak is just a way to squeeze a lil' more out of a title by appealing to those who 'didn't want to pay that much for it', or won't/don't buy singles as they release, or want the smaller packaging.

Plus, in the case of ADV, most of the thinpaks have the DVD extras removed, allowing them to put more episodes per disc, and make less for the set. (It also helps appease the singles buyers who might be upset that they paid so much for something, only to have it drop $100 in price less than a year later.)

Ah, that makes a great amount of sense. I rarely care for any kind of extras outside of clean openings and closings (I tend to collect these).

I am not particularly thrilled by the disc layout offered by these ThinkPaks--removing layered DVDs is always troublesome, but the price is definitely right. I will have to pick up a couple of these sets.

man i have close to 650 dvds...about 70% of that is anime...and i STILL FEEL lowly to all these collections...but im curious about a couple things..

It's hard, it really is. I just can't justify spending around $14 to $16 for a used volume each time I get a paycheck. To be back in the old days, where DDD would have a good number of them and their 20% sales would mean a nice $11 per volume.

Hmm, this thread makes me want to count my anime collection. A quick count of stuff that is in my permanent keeping collection I have is about 516 out on display in my apartment. That doesn't include anything in my boxes in my closet (which is a sizable amount) or in my to be watched then to be gotten rid of/already watched, for sale pile which is over 250. So 516+ keepers. Too much work to dig out stuff out of my closet for a more exact count.

Yeah, most of the DVDs had Best Buy or other tags on them. The Arc the Lad DVDs were in rough shape - the plastic was worn and even ripped. Everything else was fine though, boxes in perfect condition. No holes either - I think ADV only does that within their warehouse or something, thankfully!

Thanks Guile. I just happened to check Thursday morning before work and saw that the Cromartie box and Abenobashi 4 were showing 2 in the counter, so I quickly placed the order. Hopefully I'll be able to track down Vol 3 of Abenobashi...

It would've been great to get Full Metal Panic and Azumanga, but those flew out of stock right after the sale started. I caught the sale about 2 hours after it was posted and already most of those volumes were OOS.

Got my order today. I have to say that I'm impressed with rightstuf's shipping, it was all nicely and safely packaged, and I got it pretty quickly. The only annoying part is having to remove all of those damn security stickers while trying not to do any damage to the cover.

Here is my short little summary on how the Rightstuf cart works, for future reference.

Your cart is pretty much stored in the window you have open first and add your first item. If you continue to do all of your browsing and adding in that same window, you should have no problem with your cart emptying out.

There are a few things that will "wipe" your cart, but this is the main cause.

If you open a new window to Rightstuf and do a search (this includes clicking the banner to see sale items), it will move your cart to the window you did the search in. It will do this again if you open yet another window and do a new search.

If you have more than one cart due to circumstances, if you open a new window and do a search, it will move the cart that had an item added most recently.

Umm...there was something else I wanted to say, but I cannot remember. And this is probably confusing, and that's why I'm not a teacher.

Anyway, the part I made bold is the most important part of the message.

I was hoping to get the volume 3 and 4 of Cromartie also, but they were gone. I wasn't sure I wanted Kaliedo Star with half the first season missing, but it was either that, Gantz, or Elfen Lied and my interest in Gantz and Elfen Lied is minimal. Although, I was tempted to pull the trigger on Gantz just because they got more artboxes in stock.

Gilgamesh started interesting me a bit more once I read the previews on the Rightstuf site.

I'm a bit new to the current anime scene. My kids seem to enjoy the more mainstream stuff from Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Kiki's, etc.). Anything similar on these lists and how are the Macross series? I remember watching a lot of Macross when I was a kid and I don't know if the versions they're selling in this sale is the same or better (story and art-wise). I'm old and don't remember the specifics anymore.;)

I'm a bit new to the current anime scene. My kids seem to enjoy the more mainstream stuff from Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Kiki's, etc.). Anything similar on these lists and how are the Macross series? I remember watching a lot of Macross when I was a kid and I don't know if the versions they're selling in this sale is the same or better (story and art-wise). I'm old and don't remember the specifics anymore.;)

Thanks, that's what I've gathered from reading some of the descriptions of some of the titles. Maybe I'll just pick a few series and see how it goes.

I can recommend some series..but there not really kid friendly. lol


Neon Genesis (a must for anyone with even a tad bit of interest in anime)
Excel Saga (Very quirky. More of a humorous series.)
Gantz (Very dark. Lots of blood and limbs, and just overall a great action anime)
Noir ( an espionagey drama)

I don't know if it's still around, but you should definitely consider Area 88. They had both the original OVA and the new tv series available.
The macross series they have listed is the original, with digitally remastered audio and video. It's the original series also, not the Robotech version, so the story is abit different.

Most series you should buy in full or at least up to a certain number. Like dont buy Volume 5 of something and than 7. Youll be missing out on story elements.

Thanks guys. Ended up with Mystical Detective series (minus v3) and Area88 titles (no v4 though), some FYE fodder and some filler (Noir v1) to sample.

I'll definitely keep an eye out for the another sale to get those missing volumes. I also hate to have incomplete sets but at these prices, I can be patient.

I'm really looking forward to watching Mystical Detective. I enjoy mythology and it will be interesting to see this anime twist on Norse mythology.

Rightstuf still seems to be selling the DVDs that were offered in the sale for pretty cheap. Most of the DVDs that I've seen are less than 8 bucks a piece.
