But I do appreciate that they gave us something, and that’s one step in the right direction.

Chalk it up as a test to see whether implementing demos would increase VC sales. I’m sure Nintendo has heard the clamor for demos from the rabid (as they, or some poor intern, must hear the clamor for more robust online), but they play it so safe with their business it makes sense they’d want some hard data before they spent the money on a demo service.

Besides, by putting demos on a popular title like Smash Bros. (the perfect game for a multi-game scattershot approach) they eliminate network and download costs. Well played, Nintendo. Well played.

As posted by Erich, I really hope this is Nintendo’s way of testing the waters on offering VC demos in the Wii Shop channel. It is a neat feature of Brawl, which is already packing a ton of content, but I would rather Nintendo implement this on their actual VC games.

I think they are just testing the waters, I don’t need demos for any of those games but demos would be great for some of those games that weren’t as often played due to system popularity etc. I hope this isn’t the reason for the delay though.

I gotta agree I can't wait for SSBM! As for the demos, it's a really lame way to give demos. Nintendos online service is very weak. Demos are needed for games before I spend $10 on a game that's over 10 years old. The prices are way to high to not allow demos for the junk they offer.

This could actually be a really great idea. I’m sure there will be several people picking this game up who are not as knowledgeable about Nintendo as the rest of us, due to the Wii successfully drawing in people who’ve never played a video game before or haven’t touched it in years, or even some of us gurus might not have played a particular game, such as me never touching Kid Icarus. Having the demos is a great way for those people to get a slight idea of why that character is great, and could help boost VC sales slightly.
Now, I just wish they would hurry up and allow demos on the actual market place!

While it’s a great idea for Brawl to cut out the middleman and offer bite-sized pieces of Nintendo’s biggest hits, I’m going to have to say they should really just include small demos of games in the Virtual Console Shop a la XBLA.

It’s a great introductory step for the non-gaming or Playstation generation to jump into a small demo and see where the magic came from, though. In my opinion it’s a smart-but-counterintuitive move, as most people wouldn’t go into the VC to search for games blindly, but at the same time it’s a little preposterous that Nintendo wouldn’t have already implemented demos for the VC Shop in the first place.

What’s even more unbelievable, and yet still not surprising, is that there’s probably no option in SSBB to send players straight to the VC to purchase these games after tinkering around with them. The easiest way to turn a profit would be to include a “Purchase from VC” option. Heck, they’d have a lot of customers nailed if there was a discount through the purchase of the game via DVD implementation, as well.

As far as Smash Bros. is concerned with educating gamers on video games’ past, it’s a little strange that they don’t encourage players to follow up by giving either a direct link to the VC or offering a discount. We already paid $50 got the game, right? Doesn’t it seem like gamers may be a little more compelled to buy a title based off a demo if a game disc chunked off a dollar or two to buy these VC titles?

Yeah it’s all theory, but with Nintendo’s ass-backwards online strategy, it’s pretty safe to assume that it’ll remain as a little daydream. Most people may not even consider picking up any of these “master"pieces in the first place, but you gotta strike while the iron’s hot.

Game looks pretty sweet, though.

I can’t fault Nintendo for including these demos, as some appear to be doing. However, I can’t get overly excited about them either. These are largely games that I already have multiple copies of for multiple systems. Who hasn’t played these games by now? Who needs a demo to be “sold” on Metroid or SMB or Zelda? Give me some time with the games I haven’t played, like the Japan only Fire Emblems or Earthbounds (a.k.a. Mother).

I viewed the inclusion of the demos being a smart move for Nintendo. These samples are not for the hardcore gamer but more for the newest casual gamers crowd who now owns a Wii. I’m pretty sure that once the game is finally released, every game shop on this rock will be pushing this game to everybody. This way, they can reintroduce the retro games to a whole new audience and get additional Virtual Console sales in the process. We can’t assume that everyone has played Super Mario Bros before. Think 10 year old gamer whose parents were never into gaming and the Wii is his/her’s first console.

Did he say it was more than demos? No. Why would you expect anything more than that. The thing that’s a step beyond game demos we’ve seen thus far this generation is that this gives people the progress they got in the demo before time ran. You can’t say that for 360 or PS3 demos.

I’ll join the chorus of gamers wondering why on earth are VC demos not available. What reaosn can they possibly have not to do it? what is there for them to lose?. I think they are really missing an opportunity.

Having said that, I’m really looking forward to playing Brawl(especially on-line, irritating friend codes notwithstanding), and the whole demo dealie sounds like a cool add-on I wasn’t expecting.

Hurray! I wish the CAGcast would go back to it’s regular day, but I understand why. Since Friday’s are my extra day of the weekend, I usually don’t get to listen until Monday. I cheated today though because I had places to go, things to do… *Sigh* A day off is never really a day off.

Anyways! I love ThinkGeek.com! They also have totally awesome stuff. My wishlist has almost 3 grand of stuff. The newest addition to my wishlist? Of course, the 8-bit tie. Who would have thought that a April Fool’s joke could become such a hot seller? Don’t worry, the wifi shirt is also on my wishlist. That’ll be a fun prize for someone!

Well, that sure seems easier than the mid-boss method, but I'll just stick to the far easier Codebreaker/Action Replay.

"This is awsome that they are putting these demos in the game. Gives the games a better chance of being purchased off the VC. However, I think a better idea is to put demos on the VC. I think putting like a 10 minute demo of games would be easy. Then like after 10 minutes you can either buy it or it deletes itself.

I still can’t wait for this game to come out, going to be amazing.

I'm really excited for sins of a solar empire. Not only is the name totally awesome, but I was a huge fan of games like freespace/freelancer and homeworld. I'm a sucker for outer space. <3 mass effect...

And speaking of mass effect, I hope that comes out on PC this year fixing some of the annoying issues with it. But I highly doubt they will, those sorts of fixes seem like sequel territory and not port territory.

I'm also really interested to see how STALKER's going to do. The original game wouldn't run on my machine and I heard it was extremely buggy, but I heard that it was good. I'm just surprised and happy that it was able to sell well enough to make a sequel viable.

I really hope this leads to demos on the VC. They could possibly have demos on different game discs and just follow SSBB, but that seems pretty stupid. It would be better if they just had a channel for it like they’re supposed to have for the DS. I want their DS demo channel ASAP too, but hopefully I won’t need to play a demo for one certain game from the Advance Wars series, as I will have the full version.

Rock Out With Your (what do you mean I can’t say that) Out

Am I the only person who likes the Rock Band guitar? I thought it was more responsive for star power, and I quickly got used to the quietness of the strum bar. Also, I was lucky enough to get a working one. And I found the Xbox 360 Guitar Hero 2 guitar to be rather uncomfortable to play, though it may be that the guitar I used had unusually stiff buttons.

It’s not like the $80 price tag was unexpected, but I’m still waiting for the time when Harmonix can overcome its publisher’s desire to make 100% profit on plastic peripherals. They kept saying they wanted to include MIDI instrument support into Rock Band; it would have been nice for the few people who own MIDI drum kits to be able to use something a bit nicer, and more comfortable, than what they give you.

Is this on the SSB disc or a separate disc? Either way, this is a good step in the right direction for Nintendo.
Unlike XBL, with Nintendo games, most of the older audience knows what they are getting when they DL a game from the VC. I know its not an excuse for Nintendo, but it seems they know this and have yet to but demos up on the VC.

At least I had two other friends who shared their love for the platform, so we got to play all kinds of great games like Alex Kidd, Shinobi, Phantasy Star, Miracle Warriors, and Ys. I hope Fallout 3 lives up to the hype. Just like with Oblivion, I’ll probably will get the PC version over the 360 so I can enjoy all mods that will tweak the game to make it even more enjoyable.

No Clever Title for Sick Men (http://gamesblog.ugo.com/index.php/gamesblog/more/no_clever_title_for_sick_men/)

Comment:

It was actually the Sega Master system that made me want a Sega Genesis. A friend & a family member both owned the 8 bit system and i remember playing it as much as possible when I visited. There were alot of cool games on the Master system, atleast for it's time anyway. Splatter House, Shinobi, Altered Beast, Golden Axe, and etc paved the way for many great sequels for their series on the Genesis.

"I missed out owning the SMS. I had a NES myself. However, I never forgot the day I played a SMS at my friends house. Fast forward to the release of the Sega Genesis. I quickly choose that system over the SNES when asked what I wanted for Christmas. I loved it and never regretted my decision. I eventually bought a SNES shortly before it left store shelves. All that to say, I am glad they are releasing some SMS games on the VC."

I used to do PC gaming, but it’s a cost thing. As ParksCo2 said, keeping current with graphics cards alone costs a mint, and then when you need to do a complete upgrade to get the latest and greatest bus speeds, drive interfaces, etc, you’re looking at $2k investment.

Or, you can spend $400-500 on a current gen console and be done with it for a few years.

No Clever Title for Sick Men

Having more consoles on the VC is both exciting and disconcerning. It’s exciting for obvious reasons; more games.
However, with the Wii’s memory kinda.. feh.. You really can hold just oh so much before you *HAVE* to delete or store the game(s) you no longer play. Pretty lame :(

This game looks fun, too. I never had a Master System so this is good news for me.
Feel better. I am also sick and dying at home too :( :(

I don't know...I still see Marvel:UA as more of a fluke: a good comics game. Maybe canceling it isn't too bad of an idea. Trailer looked cool, though...
And God! Atlantis Attacks? Wash that down with some Evolutionary War (and that crossed over into Alf!) and it'd be hard to make a game worse than that.

I'll take a copy of Advance Wars please!

Here's what I posted on the PC Games Going Extinct post:

I think a lot of the problem with PC games is that they require such beefy machines to play and thus are aimed at a very narrow market. Games like Crysis and UT3 sold poorly (by console game standards at least) because those with the rigs to play them are few and far between.

Thanks Wombat!

I can see this to an extent. A lot of people are tired of upgrading their video cards to play the newest games with adequate FPS.
But then you look at a game like WoW, and see that its subs have just reached over 10 million, and you think the PC gamer pop. isn’t dying anytime soon.

PC Games Going Extinct? (http://gamesblog.ugo.com/index.php/gamesblog/more/pc_games_going_extinct/)

As many have already pointed out correctly, I think PC gamers have shift their focus to MMO look at the success of WoW. Also the problem of privacy definitely have something to do with poor sale of non-subscription based PC games.
Privacy is also a problem with console but your average consumer is much less technically advance than your average PC users. However, if console privacy can be easily done, console games sale will suffer also. Just look at the disparity of PSP systems vs. games sale numbers.

Has Microsoft officially cancelled the Marvel MMO? (I’d love to see a link; the closest I’ve heard is speculation along those lines.)

What Marvel really needs to do is get this game franchise back into the hands of a fighting game developer. I’m sure most of us would love a return to Capcom, but even someone like Namco-Bandai would be a big step in the right direction.

I was a big PC gamer years ago but I have slowly drifted more and more over to the console side. I still pick up a few PC games a year but I just don't seem to have the time to play them.

I think part of the problem is that years ago the PC platform was vastly superior(in terms of raw power) to the consoles but this is not really the case anymore.

I also think that a lot of people such as myself are tired of sitting at the computer all day long and so when relaxing they want to play on the couch with a nice TV.

Heh. With the caveat that I have not actually played the game, since I don’t own a 360 or PS3 (stupid money...) I thought it was possible to play a female character and have a relationship with a female NPC. If true, it seems like that would be more of a sticking point with conservatives than the ‘pornography’ in the game.
