Now thats a headline worth exploring!
ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) -- Cave explorers discovered a pit inside a mountain range in central Croatia believed to have the world's deepest subterranean vertical drop, at nearly 1,700 feet, a scientific institute reported Monday.
The cave, in Croatia's mountainous Velebit region, has a steady, weaving descent of 203 feet before it takes a direct vertical plunge of 1,693 feet through the ground, said Ana Sutlovic Baksic, a researcher at the Velebit Speleological Society.
The cave's widest stretch is about 100 feet.
"We have even bigger caves in Croatia, but according to available data, this cave has the world's deepest vertical drop," Sutlovic Baksic said.
At the foot of the Velebit cave are small ponds and streams, including one of the largest known colonies of subterranean leeches, Sutlovic Baksic said.
It is located in the Rozanski Hip National Park reserve in the rocky Velebit mountain range in central Croatia. The pit was discovered by a team of explorers from around the country.
The Voronya Cave in Georgia's West Caucasus has the world's deepest cavern, measuring 5,610 feet. But the pit discovered in Croatia is thought to have the largest underground vertical drop.
Croatia, which is rich in natural wonders, is home to two of the world's 20 deepest caves.
The Velebit region is Croatia's largest mountain range, attracting speleologists, botanists and hikers from around the world. Much of the rugged area remains untouched, and scientific expeditions over its vast expanse covered by rare flora and fauna have been ongoing for years.

That's really flipping cool. It would be sweet to go to the bottom of that cave.

Sucks to fall into that pit
Bob leans down to take a better look.
Bob slips into the cave.
Bob Survives somehow and is thankful, until he gets his blood sucked slowly by leeches......

But yeah, this is very interesting. I wonder how deep in miles this thing is!

5,280 feet in a mile.
The hole is a vertical drop of 1,693 feet.
1,693 / 5,280 = .32.
So it is about a third of a mile deep.

5,280 feet in a mile.
The hole is a vertical drop of 1,693 feet.
1,693 / 5,280 = .32.
So it is about a third of a mile deep.
If someone wants they can check my math on the following equations:
1,693 feet / 3.3 M/F = 513 Meters
513 = .05 * 9.8 * t^2
513 = .49 * t^2
513/.049 = t^2
t^2 = 1047
t = square root of 1047
t = 32.35
So if you were to fall into the hole you would free fall for 32.35 seconds before landing in a pile of subterranian leaches who will suck blood from your corpse which is now a mass of bloody pulp 8-[

Now calculate the final velocity (just before you slam into the ground).
Think this is correct:
Final Velocity = 9.8 * Time
Vf = 9.8 * 32.35
Vf = 317.03 Meters per second
Vf (in feet/s) = 317.03 * 3.3 = 1046.2 Feet / sec
Vf (in miles/s) = 1046.2 / 5280 = .2 Miles per second
Vf (in miles/hour) = .2 Miles/s * 60 sec/min * 60 min/hr = 720 Miles / hour

If you factor in the air resistance, someone falling into that hole would reach terminal velocity. According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminal_velocity), terminal velocity for a skydiver with an unopened parachute is 120 mi/h, and 200 mi/h if the skydiver has his/her limbs tucked in. The air resistance in the cave is probably less than in the atmosphere, so terminal velocity in the cave would probably be a bit higher.
Now calculate the final velocity (just before you slam into the ground).
Think this is correct:
Final Velocity = 9.8 * Time
Vf = 9.8 * 32.35
Vf = 317.03 Meters per second
Vf (in feet/s) = 317.03 * 3.3 = 1046.2 Feet / sec
Vf (in miles/s) = 1046.2 / 5280 = .2 Miles per second
Vf (in miles/hour) = .2 Miles/s * 60 sec/min * 60 min/hr = 720 Miles / hour
That would be great if the hole was a vacuum, but you're forgetting about terminal velocity. Air resistence exists from the falling body which acts opposite of gravity. This force will eventually balance the body's weight, and it will fall at a constant velocity known as the terminal velocity.
Two factors determine the magnitude of terminal velocity. Both mass and orientation of the object depends on the final velocity of the object. For a heavy object, the terminal velocity is generally greater than a light object. This is because air resistance is proportional to the falling body's velocity squared. Resistance is again a factor in the orientation of the object. If the jumper went in spread eagle his body would create more friction with the air molecules causing more air resistence -- slowing the jumper down.
Terminal velocity for a normal person is about 125 - 200 mph depending on orientation.

That's still going to end up as this equation:
Terminal Velocity= 175 MPH (for the sake of arguement)
Human Free-Fall+ Terminal Velocity+One Deep ass Hole=KERSPLAT!
The equation is that simple. Unless, I don't know, you tucked and rolled or something. I'm sure you'd be fine.
