Haven't read the article, but $10 says he had one of those cheap knock off batteries.

I posted this in General Gaming forum, then I saw it here. I wonder how bad the burns are here, but I smell lawsuit. How does the news come across a story like this? I have to think this was set up by the parents (or a lawyer), to start settlement negotiations. Sony will be paying this kid 6 figures to shut up.

Just have to figure out how to get my PSP to blow up here.

I love the fact that the rules state that children are allowed to bring the portables to school, but not to play them during school hours. That makes a lot of sense, administration.

Sure, if they want it after school, fine, but have them leave it in their lockers.

So, in essence, it probably shouldn't have exploded in his pants, but it also shouldn't have been in his pants in the first place.

I mean, really, if he had just taken it out of his pants for class, this never would've been a problem.

Yup, looks like a battery explosion alright. The question is what caused it: Temperature or short-circuit?

Nope ... instead the lockers would of caught on fire ... no one would of noticed .. and several kids would of died a horrible firey death. Yea I went there :D

Anyways, I vote for spontaneous combustion!

If he made a Pandora's Battery himself, which he MAY have done, then it would have been by short-circuit.

I know a bit about Pandora's Batteries not because I have one, but because a friend asked for me to help him do it, and instead I watched him do it.

I have a feeling it must have been a stock battery... I mean, they wouldn't be going through the trouble of contacting Sony if the kid had been using a homemade battery, right?

That burnt PSP reminds of the Game Boy that surrived the Gulf War. Doubt the PSP still works though.

I was surprised Nintendo got a hold of it and now displays it at the World store in NYC.

If he softmodded his Pandora, and then converted it back, I don't see how it could cause any damage, since it only affects the battery's EEPROM code. Also, a battery that is in service mode boots the PSP in service mode, which means that it wasn't an active PB at the time it exploded. The only way he could have messed it up is if he attempted to hardmod the battery, which involves opening it up and desoldering the correct wire. I only say attempted in this case because it is pretty tough to restore a hardmodded battery (And would be a very stupid move if you aren't handy with a soldering tool).

I'm thinking that the classroom's temperature may have been a factor. If it was hot in the classroom, then it may have been hotter in the pocket.

As if his parents would have any idea about this? Just listen to the news report, they don't know anything about the PSP or the game he was playing (besides the fact it isn't Manhunt 2).

My friend hardmodded his battery. Then again, this kid is in the 7th grade, I doubt he would hardmod his battery. However, my friend also found a video on youtube that showed to pop something off with a knife, and draw a line with a pencil or some shit. I dunno, I wasn't paying much attention.
