How can I do a backup of the entire drives of C and D onto a external drive?

Thanks.

Make a disc image with a program like Norton Ghost.

I've heard good things about Ghost and some software called Acronis True Image. I would also check to see if any backup software came with your external drive. Most do come with some sort of software.

I use SyncBack. Free, easy software. Lets you set up a full or partial backup to run scheduled or manual with emailed log report. The only bad thing is if you go into "manage directories" it takes a long time to read them all, but that could be the result of having lots of folders and subfolders.
I don't think it does an actual "ghost" image, just a databackup; but that's what I'm concerned about. I can reinstall my programs if I need.

how big are these images that are made for lets says 50GB of data that needs to be backed up

Depending on what is in the partition, it could be a small as 25gb. Graphics and Music don't compress as well as documents.

I personally like Acronis True Image, but Norton Ghost is good too.

Just get one of those programs and it is pretty much fool proof.
