Game Repair (DISK DOCTOR and Others like it)

do these items work. I have heard really bad things then i have really good things. I buy quite a bit of used games when they run good deals and im just starting to collect but im trying to stay cheap. I know you will say collectors buy new but i look for good looking cases when i buy. My Eb understands this and will look for a complete game that is good looking for me. So do these items work. What do you recommend.

Personally, I love my Game Doctor. Mine has worked on about fifty different discs and all worked except with the notable exception of Remember The Titan's which must have been damaged beyond belief. But beware, the EB's and Gamestop's around me have actually rejected Game Doctored discs...

I wouldn't let a Game Doctor within 100 yards of my games. If I ever had a game that was so messed up that it was unplayable (and I actually wanted it, I would have it professionally resurfaced.
Heck, for as infrequently as I would need it done, it would be cheaper as well.

How can they tell? You'd figure it would look much better than a scratched up disc.

Edit: JSweeney - Where can you get them professionally resurfaced? I've had a copy of MGS that hasn't worked for like a 1 year and I'd like to get it working again.

They dont. They have telltale circular marks around the entire back of the game.

alot of private stores do it. Mine does it for 4 dollars a disk but i was thinking maybe purchasing one of these is better in the long run.

hmm its that bad huh. Well i guess if it comes up ill get the game resurfaced. Do you guys recomend anything else to get small scratched out. Something sold by somebody. I used toothepaste and vasoline when my socom2 disk got screwed by my brother. Now it works fine.

I have one. I'll use it on things that I don't value enough to have professionally resurfaced, but I wouldn't us eit on anything important.

I've had no problems with the Game Doctor. It's restored over a dozen unplayable audio and game CDs and DVDs to full functionality.

If a game is irreparably damaged most publishers have a reasonable replacement policy that requires you mail it in for an exchange.

those things totally mangle up the disk. they may work, but it's really ugly.

i would look into trying to get a store to resurface it for you with a real resurfacing machine. at the store i work at we resurface disks for $3 a piece, and we have a real machine that makes them look brand new. i'm going to go out on a limb here and say that other stores have similar equipment.

So what exactly are the stores that do this resurfacing? I don't really have any privately owned ones close to me. Does GS or EB resurface them?

certain ebs and gamestops do it not all of them. My charges 4$ thats the only reason i was thinking about it.

My GS had the machine and it worked great. Never use a disk doctor. My EB won't take discs that have been doctored and you can easily tell. Just be careful, the person running the pro machines needs to know what he is doing so he doesn't screw up. You can only take so much off the disc. I know the one guy at my GS used to know exactly how to use it and the discs were perfect but the other guy was not as good.

if you search online you can get them resurfaced for $2 each. I get my games resurfaced for $.50 each, which is really cheap.

yeah but with time and shipping it would be a little cheaper at 4. Maybe multiples but not just one. Where do you get 50$.
