Sonic Blasts Onto Xbox
Sega unleashes 20 Sonic games in one package for $20.

August 10, 2004 - Sega of America wants you to step back into the past and enjoy a simpler time. They don't want to just give you any old games. They want you to reminisce about Sonic the Hedgehog. You know, the wacky blue mascot with an attitude? The mascot that basically reinvented mascots for the ages? Yeah, that guy. The one that likes chilidogs and hangs out with Tails.

The best thing? Sega's willing to give you a sweet deal too. Giving it an old school name -- Sonic Mega Collection Plus -- and pricing the game at an MSRP of $20, it'll be very, very hard to refuse.

There's more. The aptly named old-school collection will feature 20 games. Twenty games! The list includes seven Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis games, three Sonic & Knuckles "lock-on" games, four additional and unlockable Genesis games (two entirely new entries), and six Sonic the Hedgehog Game Gear games. There is also a Sonic museum packed with art, comics and more stuff.

Here's the full line-up:
Sonic The Hedgehog (Sega Genesis)
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (Sega Genesis)
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (Sega Genesis)
Sonic & Knuckles (Sega Genesis)
Sonic 3D Blast (Sega Genesis, Saturn)
Sonic The Hedgehog Spinball (Sega Genesis)
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (Sega Genesis)
Sonic & Knuckles lock-on: Sonic The Hedgehog 2
Sonic & Knuckles lock-on: Sonic The Hedgehog 3
Sonic & Knuckles lock-on: Blue Spheres
The Ooze
Comix Zone
Flicky
Ristar
Sonic the Hedgehog (Game Gear)
Sonic Chaos (Game Gear)
Sonic Drift (Game Gear)
Sonic Labyrinth (Game Gear)
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (Game Gear)
Sonic Blast (Game Gear)

And no, the list doesn't include Sonic CD (which is apparently more difficult to emulate than the others).

Sega has rated Sonic Mega Collection Plus "E" for Everyone and will ship it to retail stores November 2 for $19.95. We'll have more soon.

And Midway is officially dethroned.

I don't know about the E rating, Sonic was pretty voilent to me. All that running into things and jumping on poor Robotnic's head.

If they do Sonic CD they need an option to do the American or Japanese soundtrack. I liked the Japanese version much better.

If they're having problems emulating Sonic CD then they should just use the PC version thats been out forever.

No excuses. Sonic CD is IMO the best Sonic game to date.

Looks like I will be either selling or trading in my GCN version and purchasing the Xbox version. Why oh why does it seem like my Gamecube gets no love? Oh wait, Cube owners got a portion of this collection a lot earlier...?

True, this is easy to find and is quite cheap. However, what is NOT easy is actually getting the damn thing to work!

I also see there is no Sonic 1 lock - on (Sonic Jam, for Saturn, allowed this), which likely means this will be another bare - bones production, and not have extra features like saves for Sonic 1 and 2. Sorry Sega, but that sucks.

Something to tide you over for that last week of waiting for Halo 2?

Uh.. what do you need a save feature for a game that's less than a half hour long? That's hounding Nintendo if they don't put a save feature in for SMB Classic NES (GBA).

Now they just need to put a colected Monkeyball 1 & 2 on Xbox. Sega should know by now it's a losing proposition to put games with no great technical requirements on only one platform. OTOH, if it weren't for Monkeyball I could have waited at leat two price drops before buying my GameCube.

i wonder if they can fit all the mario games on 1 cart, like they did for super mario all stars (SNES) but throw in mario kart, and mario vs donkey kong, and ima keep dreaming something that will never happen.. i wish !

It would be a trivial task to put every Mario game up through the SNES and GBC on a single GBA cartridge. Mario All-Stars is a tiny cart (8 megabit IIRC) by today's standards. All of the GB Marios together would only add about 10% to the capacity required. The only one that really takes up much space is Mario RPG, which was a 32 Mb cart IIRC.

It is much too soon for titles like GBA Mario Kart and Mario vs. DK since those are still easily available at retail on their native platform.

Man, wtf.

Sega needs to do something for those of us who bought the gamecube version at launch over a year ago.

I like having every Sonic game on my gamecube, thank you. Now if they just do a "Mega Collection 2" with Sonic CD, Chaotix, and the arcade games....OHHHHHHH MAN.

Boy this turned out to be a disapointment.
I mean really there is nother all that great about this set.
You would have thought that Sega would have added Sonic CD to this, but Nooooo, insted we get the crappy GameGear games game the same ones that came with Sonic Adventure DX. And they were crap! It almost hurt to play them because they did such a awful job streching them to fit on the TV.

Comix Zone is okay but not worth buying another copy of Sonic Mega Collection. Spend the money on Viewtiful Joe for the PS2 insted.

Man Sega is really sucking.

epobirs: I wouldn't be surprized to see Monkeyball 1 & 2 on Xbox Their both coming out for the PS2.

Sega should just stop making games that are only for 1 console they should just do all platform games. Their games have been sucking lately and doing all platforms would at least ensure that they would make some profit.

Truth be told I wish Sega would just leave the market. My memories of how great Sega ones was are being replace with how crappy they are now.

I agree with you. I could care less about Sonic but I definately would be interested in Monkeyball.
