View Full Version : Gamestop Lurking = Good Deals

Not sure if this has been discussed, but yesterday I was putzing around GS and someone brought in a copy of Turok 360 (a game that I had a little bit of interest in) to trade. I used my eavesdrop perk to listen in and GS was offering $25 in trade. The employee working was really cool so I asked the customer if he'd sell it for $26 cash. We completed the transaction and everyone (well maybe not GS corporate) was happy.

Of course this is totally YMMV and it really depends on timing, luck, and who's working, but I'm thinking that this isn't a bad way to kill a lunch break or something.

Does anyone else do this? What are your thoughts on the ethics of this?

Normally that's at the very least frowned upon. I've done it a couple of times (a LONG time ago) and each time the store employees told us we had to complete the transaction outside. I figure if the guy trading-in isn't happy with the price and wouldn't have done it anyway, it's no big deal at all. However, if you're just trying to take business away from the store, they aren't going to take kindly to it.

You got lucky. Any GS employee who cares about their job would give you hell for this. Think about it. You're essentially stealing their business. You may as well be soliciting gamers right outside their door. It's not like they can "outbid" you either. Be thankful you got a good deal today (maybe you were due some good fortune), but don't get greedy.

One time my dad noticed someone trading in some system and games, and he asked the employee if he could make an offer after the store came up with their number, and the employee said yeah, as long as the transaction doesn't occur in the store.

this is a great thread, I think it really opens up the discussion on what a "deal" is, not to mention the concept of "eavesdrop perk" and the solid use of lurking

I look forward to many more "lurking = good deal" threads such as Internet lurking = good deals or garage sale lurking + car full of crap = good deals

thanks op, I definitely chuckled at this

Come on a brand new game (regardless of how good it may or may not be) for $26 is a deal.

I have done this, and scored a SNES system, and a few final fantasy games... the bitch of the matter was the power cord was from a damn AT&T answering machine, so I kind of got jipped.

Either way its happened and I would love to hear others stories about it.

You're essentially stealing their business. You may as well be soliciting gamers right outside their door.

Actually, I've thought about doing just that before, standing outside their shop someplace and soliciting those going in if they have games they're trading in to steal them away from Gamestop.

But, the only time I should've been quicker on making an offer was when the one person brought in some PS1 games right after they started the 75% off old gen clearance on PS1 titles. It was at a store which had 2-3 racks of PS1 games at one point. There were some crap games in there, but also a couple of the FF games.

I'll know for next time though.

I'm really sorry for putting this in the wrong forum. Thanks for moving it. I don't mind the slings and arrows, I was hoping to start a discussion rather than getting ripped apart, but whatever. I was just trying to let people know that it can pay to befriend GS employees to get penny guides and to be able to do this. It's almost criminal what they give in credit for games and I thought I'd get more support for sticking it to 'em. Oh well, whatever, nevermind.

JackSuper

Got several PSX, SNES games for dollars this way, also Brute Force for $3 back when it was $20 new, and most recently FFVII black label for $25, which is a deal. The employees were always cool.

It depends how you go about it. If you're doing it to resell or something, that's wrong, but if someone turns down GS' offer, then I say it's fair game, as GS won't 'up the ante' when you're not satisfied with their offer. Besides, they were gonna go back home with it anyway, right? If GS didn't make a fair enough offer, that's their bad, just so long as you're not using their store like a real-world ebay.

I had a friend that was a manager of a gamestop, and he'd call me when someone was wanting to tade something in, but didn't like their offer (several times, I might add).

I did this once for Pokemon Pearl a week after its release. I paid 20 for it (matched what EBgames was going to give the kid)
I always make sure to take a peek at what people are trading in just in case-- especially in the store where I'm friends with the employees.

I've seen people do something similar years ago when EB still sold a bunch of PC games. They'd hang around and if they saw someone looking at a game they had they'd walk up beside them and they "had a copy that wouldn't work on their computer but they can't take it back because it was opened" and that they'd sell it for a few bucks cheaper than what the store wanted.
