Ace Combat 6 is pretty good. Standard Ace Combat stuff. No real surprises, but I'm on the last mission, and some of these later missions are really epic stuff. I like having multiple battles going on with hundreds of planes in the air and targets on the ground. It does get a bit confusing, but I like that it's not as easy as other ones in the series.
I've you've ever enjoyed/finished an ace combat, i'd say it's worthwhile.

Final Fantasy XII ($50 on a system full of $50 games) - 1.64 million
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings ($40 on a system full of $30 games) - < 200k
I think it's more like:
FFXII - Main-series 3D RPG on the same system as the last 2 FF's, with 100+ million install base vs.
FFXII:RW - Sidestory 2D strat-RPG on the same system where Nintendogs is your best selling game, with half the install base.
Ultimately, I like that there's choices. But I guess people hate variety?
I hate to prolong this, but why would you want to choose lower graphical fidelity?
daroga
02-15-2008, 10:48 PM
I hate to prolong this, but why would you want to choose lower graphical fidelity? Its not so much the wanting it, but being ok with it. Things that require less detail in their graphical work might be able to add more in the terms of gameplay refinement or content. Likewise, I'm ok with lower-cost hardware.
In the end, I don't give a rip about what console something is on. If it's a quality game that I'm interested in, I'm good. We could talk about theoreticals all day about "What if Mario Galaxy was in HD?!" but that's fairly pointless since it's not in HD. It makes more sense to talk about things that actually exist. ;)
For what its worth, I think the Wii has given me the best gameplay experiences of the big, current three. The Wii's quantity made me a tad lower than the 360, but when it's there I like 'em better than things I've played on the 360. That's the thing with the Wii, there's not too many medicore games. They're either amazing or absolute trash. The 360 is full of pretty solid games that are neither mind-blowing nor complete crap.
The Wii's superiority in my opinion is less about the Wii making great games possible and more about Nintendo being one of if not the best developer out there. Almost everything that they make seem to fit right into my tastes. Well, Nintendo and Suda 51. No More Heroes is fantastic and looks like pure vomit. Weird, huh?
Speaking of 360 games, does Lost Odyssey have random battles?

I really don't see how 1-2 random battles an area would really bother anyone. Especially enough to pass on game with such an excellent story as Lost Odyssey. In most of the games where the enemies are on the screen you end up fighting way more than you'd fight in LO.
I'm not disagreeing entirely, I too prefer to see the enemies, but when it comes down to it I really don't care.

It's really more that I don't have time to play RPGs, especially on a TV console without a save-state or sleep function. The battle question was just me digging to see if I had an excuse to try it out.
Likewise, I stopped playing games for their story a while ago. I read books for a good story; I play games for fun gameplay. If both land in one game, that's a bonus.
I think RPGs are just not for me. I hope everyone that's playing it is enjoying it though!

Finished Revenant Wings. Great game, though there are a few things I would certainly fix about it - top of that list is being able to assign starting units to a leader instead of having it done automatically.
Side quests at the end got ridiculous, so I had to settle for 88% missions and 96% espers.

Hey everyone, I was not around the GGT for a bit because I ACTUALLY went out. How surprising is that????
Anyway, I visited a friend and a few I knew came by and played some KoFXI. Despite them being really good at fighters, I actually beat them a few times. A little later, more people came by (so I basically met new people), who brought over VF5 PS3 (a Japanese copy) and we all played VF5 (I left in the middle because it was getting late and had to get back just after 11pm). We pretty much spent the night socializing about fighters, PS3 (most all there were PS3 owners and play a lot), and other stuff. So basically, I did something a little different on my Friday night. ;)
I might hang out with one friend who was there and play some other games on Saturday, if the weather isn't bad.
In the GGT group, I'm the black dude. :-P

I thought the final battle in AC6 was kind of a disappointment after 4 (Megalith was just plain epic with the meteors falling and everything), 5 (I loved the Razgriz), and Zero (finally an AC game that ends with a dogfight).
jer7583
02-16-2008, 01:56 AM
I really enjoyed going back and forth between the land, sea, and air battles, and taking out the jammers, and then that final dogfight. It had no one huge enemy to defeat, but created a pretty memorable battle. And it took place at the same area the game began in. The story was nonsense, but I did like the feeling of kicking the enemy out of your homeland.
Besides, AC6 had the battle with the large air-carrier plane, and the "fly through the tunnels" missions as well. Maybe not as epic, but they were there.

Is there anything worth importing on the PS3? I enjoy supporting region free stuff. My Japanese Electroplankton will stay on my shelf forever. :)
After Gamestop had only 1 beat up disc only copy of R&C: GC, I looked at AC5 for the PS2. The demo for 6 was fun but I can't justify that $60 price. Passed on games for tonight and left Half-Price books continuing my Alex Cross (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Cross) addiction in both book and film. Morgan Freeman FTW.
I think tomorrow I'm gonna head to another GC and nab NG Sigma with that coupon and EDGE... should be $28 + tax, or roughly what Target might make it in a few weeks.

My avatars and sigs reflect what I'm doing currently. Witchblade was the last one I used because I was watching it. Now DW6 is almost upon us.
I can't keep the same one for a long period of time, it drives me up the wall. It's like wearing your underwear for a week straight or something. I'm the same way with the wallpapers on my computer. My desktop literally feels filthy to me if I do not change the wallpaper like once a week.

I get really irritated just wanting to get through a room and have like 3 battles to fight within 7 steps of the door. It's a personal thing. You need not understand or agree.
Books are not an inherently superior storytelling medium. They have just been around longer.Um, I don't recall ever saying it was superior. Nevermind how subjective such a claim, or counterclaim, would be. Books are better because A) I can close a book at any time, B) I can easily skim to refresh my memory on what the heck is happening if its been a bit of time, C) they let you use this "imagination" thing I've heard so much about, D) I don't run the risk of screwing up and need to repeat parts and having some dumb developer not making the cut-scenes skipable.
But, yeah, it's all subjective. Don't think I ever stated anything against games as a vehicle for narrative, just that I don't use them for that purpose.

And books are inherently better than games. Most storytelling mediums are. Just deal with it. Some good stories can be told, but whenever you have the option of shooting alyx in the face, despite her dying or not, ruins it. Books and movies win for story, games for fun.

Miziguchi makes the best puzzle games. Best of all, I got it for 10 bucks due to the CompUSA liquidation sale. Also picked up Zack and Wiki yesterday with my TRU gift card from Mario Galaxy. And I'm still playing Mass Effect! I've got a lot on my plate, and I couldn't be happier. :DLucky you have such a nice girlfriend. ;) I really, really need to search for a girl online.
Played a little Burnout Paradise last night and I need 6 more wins. I still keep messing up on races.

Oh so you got through 9-4 Botticus? I cracked open the copy I got yesterday since I haven't been by to get Professor Layton yet. I just wanted to see what it was like and am still in the tutorial stages. Seems kinda slow starting.9-4 was insanely difficult, and I'm still not entirely sure how I beat it - right combo of luck and strategy, I suppose.
But 9-4 is nothing compared to the side quests featuring opponents at level 90 and above when I was level 50. The main story chapters were challenging, but the real difficulty is in completing 100%.

I met my girlfriend online. But then again, I wasn't trying to find a girlfriend. I believe that is what helped us along. We were friends online for like 2 years. Then when I needed some money to help me get through school I got a job at the local mall. We just happened to run into each other. That was like 7ish years ago when we met at the mall. It does happen, but not often. Good luck!

I just don't know why, I just can't get into them. I have OK Computer and In Rainbows, but I just can't diggit. Maybe I just need to let them grow on me.
And I don't skip through songs. They tend to have a lot of ambient noise at the END of the tracks. And one track on each album that is nothing but Ambiance. But that's it. It's all goo otherwise.

DXC takes some patience but it's not THAT hard. You just have to learn not to walk into the traps the game has set up for you.
Don't meet girls online. Really. Do talk to girls online that you meet in person, but the "women" populating those dating sites are most often scams to get you signed up for porn sites, men, old women, crazy women, or rapists. Have fun with that.
That said AIM and such can be a great way to get to know someone you already know in person, without the awkwardness of a date or if you're both a little shy.

In high school I did look through a few sites like thespark.com and such. So a little of my experience, and experiences I've heard from others. I imagine it's much worse these days especially since even sites like myspace are filled with "women" who want to be your "friend" who are clearly just hawking subscriptions for pornography.

I try giving her a hand, cause I don't want to leave her here to burn to death. My friend who was supposed to walk by and watch for my signal to bail me out just passes by, oblivious to my signal and laughing his ass off while I try to tug the chair off her fat ass. When she finally gets out of the chair, she wipes the tears from her eyes and says these exact words that I shall never forget: "Want to go to a hotel? Oh, I have herpies."

Hmm... so I was lookin' for something to play on my PS3 and decided: Oh, how bout that game I haven't played yet... Ridge Racer 7.
It's sooooo much better than RR6, which is a good thing because that game was bland as hell. RR5 was shit. Really, it's the first great RR since R4. But yeah, the tracks that were dull in RR6 that show up in RR7 have gotten a lot more color, much better lighting, and a buncha other tweaks, and they're actually fun to race now. The soundtrack is infinitely better as well. And really, this is like... the best arcade style racing there is.
Supposedly, there's a shit-ton of customization you can do now, too, but I haven't gotten into that shit yet.
So yeah, it's a lot better than you might expect from the series... if you like arcade style racers, check it out. West Side.
Oh, and the AI is muchmore aggressive, even in the first races. Nice.

I find it annoying that portable games come out at above $30 anymore since they really shouldn't. I know we've already talked about The World Ends With You, but come on...$40 for it is crazy, I don't care how good it is. I want to get it, but I won't. This one will either get rare or drop in price fast. I'm expecting it to drop it price myself.
Looking at all the other supposedly awesome portable games that come out at $30 (Patapon even at $20) I can't believe portable games are at $40 anymore. At least the whole $50 PSP game thing is a thing of the past, that was incredibly stupid.

A GH line would probably sell amazingly well with the DS, it's strange why they haven't done it yet. Aside from the OOP games, I guess people are still buying fairly old DS games, even at full MSRP.

Whatever. I played nothing today :PRidge Racer 7 is much better than RR6 on 360. Mostly because it adds 7 more tracks, mixes the RR formula up a bit (with manufacturer challenges, car upgrades, Grand Prix events, UFRA events, etc.) and is the most varied in the series. The only thing that may be worse is online lacking voicechat (although online has more options overall now). I'm a big fan of the RR series, and 7 is definitely my favorite (surpassing RR4 and RR on PS2 as my favorite one originally). There's no denying the tracks which were in the 360 version look no better (and not really worse either), but the new tracks in the PS3 version as the best looking yet (especially The Lost Ruins). RR7 on PS3 defaults to the X as the gas button (which is what I stick to).
MotorStorm is just a like it or hate it game. Some really enjoy the racing and still play it now (like me), and there are some who just flat out hate it due to lack of modes and being frustrating. I will say it's definitely not a pick up and play game.
Anyway, I visited a friend and brought some PS3 games over to his place. We played DMC4, DW Gundam, Time Crisis 4, NG Sigma, etc. Fun time. I'll probably play CoD4 and/or Burnout Paradise tonight.
I thought RR6 was good, but RR7 was better. RR5 was pure cancer though.I 100% agree with you there. I liked RR6 on 360, but RR7 hooked me even more (mostly because of it's more varied gameplay and not playing the exact same type of race over and over again). RR5 on PS2 was terrible. It was a decent percentage of the reason I had a horrible taste in my mouth when I got a PS2 near launch and sold it (re-buying it when the price dropped). That game was extremely disappointed and the graphics were some of the jaggiest I ever saw.

Krymner: You should look into some of the low level playthrough guides, especially on the NeoGAF-"Gaf Plays FF8" thread. Since the enemies the game throws at you are scaled to your level, running away from and carding every enemy you can makes the game a cakewalk. Especially with clever junction use, I kill most bosses with one or two regular attacks and have yet to use a GF in battle. I'm 20 hours in and just got to fisherman's wharf- nobody in my party is over level 15, most are level 10ish. Makes for a unique experience.
The part where the galbadian soldiers come to fisherman's wharf, and the mayor is all like "i'll go talk to them" and then squall's thought bubble comes up with "He's dead." makes me laugh.

It was amazing and set all sorts of standards when it hit originally, but it's the classic case of games just not aging well (as is true with almost all N64 titles save for Mario 64, Star Fox 64, and maybe Mario Kart 64).
Twilight Princess just feels like the game OoT was trying to be, so since I've beaten that, I've got zero drive to try to slug through its N64 counterpart.

IMO OoT was so great at the time because it was something new. They really haven't done much gameplay-wise to Zelda since. Not to mention as far as story goes, if you've played one of the main Zelda's you pretty much know what the story is and since OoT was my first I happen to like that one best, besides that, the beginning of Twilight Princess was so agonizingly boring I ended up shelving it and later trading it.

Gun rules. Well worth my $7.50 or whatever I paid. The story is pretty good and the final fight is bad ass!

FMP Fumoffu. Rei already said it though. That show is unbelievably hysterical.
I'm a pretty big anime junkie myself, around 275 DVDs...
Have over 400 myself, at last count.
Yikes, time for a new thread already?
And I stopped watching anime a while ago too.
Last one I saw was Appleseed Ex Machina. Seems I only watch the big budget movies nowadays...
I'm really in the mood for Rock Band drumming, but the kiddies just went to bed and the wife wants to watch 48hours Mystery. Guess it ain't happenin'. Maybe I'll crack open a bottle of wine or something. :p

Just Finished Yakuza.
Everyone should play that game, for the story alone.
Its one of the best told in a game.
I Love It and cant wait for number 2.
