rossetta stone is a pretty good program. If you look on sites that might host copyright protected material you might find it.

I haven't used it but my friend swears by Rossetta Stone. However I believe he said if you try to learn Japanese with it you need to learn Katakana & Hiragana to where you feel somewhat confortable with it.

I tried rossetta stone and tought it was pretty awful, its pretty generic, some of the stuff it teaches is incorrect and you can find free stuff on the web or cheap programs on sale on amazone/ebay that are the same. For learning kanji try slime forest the free version has 1000 kanji. with this program I was able to learn the meaning of the rist 1000 kanji in about a month.
Although it's not computer thing I suggest pimsleur's audio courses If you do them every day you can get to 200/300 college level in a few months.

Urge to point out irony... growing... must make... snide comment...

Maybe you should start with learning English before moving on to other languages?

I've heard from people that Rosetta Stone can be hard to use. There's supposed to be some new easier to use programs coming out by summer or later this year.
