I played some VF5 and SF2HF online earlier. I had some good matches in VF5, and faced Rodimus's Zangief in SF2HF. He beat me pretty soundly, but I did beat him once with Blanka. 8-)
I'm going to build my 360 stick very soon. I'm tired of the broke ass 360 pad. I'll just have to figure out how I'm going to connect a headset to it. I could desolder the connector and run some wires to it. The stick is going to be wireless and smaller than my big monster custom, so it will fit in my lap.

GG on Street Fighter. I think you also beat me with Sagat but I was using Guile. Sorry, all I use is Zangief, hope that didn't annoy you too much.
But about Bulletwitch I picked it up at CC's clearance sale a few months ago for $8. My first time playing it was last night. It's okay, I was so bored last night I decided to give it a shot. I'm not a big fan of the genre but if you could find one for $15 I'd say go for it. It seems very short.

I didn't mind you playing as The 'Gief, because you don't cheat like the AI. It does some dirty cheating shit like if you jump in, it starts blocking before you even attack, which isn't possible, and instant SPDs from sweep range. I had some fun matches, and yeah, I beat your Guile with Sagat, but it was extremely close.
I asked you about BW because you're the only friend I have that has played it, I think. I know Play magazine liked it, but a game has to be a borderline hate crime for Play to not like it.
I'm going to build my 360 stick next week for sure. I'm about to order the parts from Lizard Lick. I'll have some pics of it, so you guys can see my ghetto construction. ;)

So.. I just heard King of Fighters XII is 100% completely hand drawn and that there is zero cell shading in it.
"We knew it was going to be hard going in," says Kukino. "But we wanted to make the ultimate 2D fighting game." Up close, that meticulous attention to detail becomes apparent, and you're always noticing a flourish here or a nice touch there. Every inch of the screen has something interesting going on. "We wanted the look of the game to have more in common with manga or anime,"
Just wow is all I can say. Got this from Kotaku.

KoF XII is gonna be tits, but my hype wagon still goes to Street Fighter because well... it's Street Fighter 4. I really hope it stops looking like a reskinned SF2 though.
Also, I just finished watching King of Kong. That movie was badass. Ever go to a Rickey's, Rodimus?

That has earned some repeat business from me in the future. It may be only $2.30, but most businesses would pocket the difference. Thumbs up.

Third EVO title announced...
www.sdtekken.com
www.evo2k.com
So far we have...
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection
Another game being announced tomorrow at 12 noon.
Only six games total this year.
I think the remaining three will be:
Super Turbo HD
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core
Super Smash Bros. Brawl

He's good, but I really like SFA 3 for how the combo mechanics work, they just feel different than other street fighters, but the Alpha series is also my favorite SF series.
He plays similar to Zangief, but with more finess/agility with his moves. and not grapple heavy at all compared to zangief. His supre moves however...... are almost exactly like zangief's with the whole 360 turn on the d-pad with a combination of 1 or 2 buttons.
I play T. Hawk well (atleast I think so) but Sagat is really my meat and potatoes.

Is the tiger uppercut affected by any of the -isms in CvS2? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it like:
C-ism: basically plays like Alpha 3's A-ism
A-ism: plays like Alpha 3's V-ism / Alpha 2 (damn, they made this confusing)
P-ism: plays like Street Fighter III with parries and stuff
aaaand since none of those really equate to a "Super Turbo" mode, you get multi-hitting Tiger Uppercuts no matter what you choose. Is that the right idea?
I've never played CvS2 very seriously, but are any of the -isms shunned / hated / banned in higher-level fighting circles? I was under the impression that V-ism was somewhat broken in Alpha 3, so I was wondering.
Mr. Beef
03-06-2008, 05:44 PM
Tiger Uppercut is the same in all grooves in CvS2. From what I've seen, A-groove and K-groove are pretty popular, but a lot could've changed from a couple of months ago, when I was paying attention to it.

I'm waiting for the journal entry stating that random scrub Shoryu's are safe on....well anything. Randomly throw it out and be safe from any sort of whiff punishment.
As JimFoley knows, Groove selection in CVS2 depends on what character is being played. Each groove has properties, which all characters gain advantages/disadvantages from. You can't play a low-tier character and hope to win against an A-Groove team that is made up of either a PTF Bison or a "Sho-Sho" Sakura.
To answer Busta's question about CVS2, there aren't any Grooves in CVS2 that are shunned or hated by fighting game circles. The only ones that are banned at console tourneys, are the random ass "EX" Grooves (or "Custom Groove") present on the console versions of the game.
Also no offense to anyone here but play fighting games on the platforms with their best conversions.

Well let's see... what games have had multiple console releases. I think on this, and offer my answers:
Capcom Vs. SNK 2 - DC (PS2 version played in tourneys, though)
Darkstalkers (series) - PS2
Fatal Fury (Including Real Bout) - PS2 compilations
Garou: Mark of the Wolves - PS2
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core - PS2 (US version)
King of Fighters Series (prior to XI) - PS2 compilations
King of Fighters XI - Japanese PS2 release (for progressive scan)
Last Blade 2 - Dreamcast
Marvel Vs. Capcom - Dreamcast
Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 - Dreamcast
Melty Blood: Act Cadenza - PC (Ver. B)
Neo Geo Battle Coliseum - US PS2 release (for greatly reduced load times)
Power Stone - PSP (Collection... maybe?)
Samurai Shodown Series - Saturn
Soul Calibur II - Xbox
Street Fighter Alpha 1/2/3 - PS2 (Anthology)
Street Fighter Anniversary Collection - PS2
Super Street Fighter II Turbo - XBox (CCC Vol. 2)
Tekken 5 - PS3 (DR, obviously)
Virtua Fighter 5 - Xbox 360
Vs. Series (prior to MVC) - Saturn
I did try to research that shit a while back and buy the best versions.
Okay, this was largely useless.

From what I read in various threads on SRK, the CCC2 version of ST has serious input lag. I shortly let my copy go after hearing about that. MarkMan any comments on that?
Tisk tisk, my Asian friend, but shouldn't you be playin' dat Dreamcast version of CVS2 then?
Pish, whatevaaaaaaa
From what I've read there are very minor differences between the DC and PS2 versions.
****From CVS2 FAQ on SRK boards (Answered by Campbell "Buktooth" Tran)****
Q: There's like 5 different platforms for CvS2. Are there any differences?
A: For obvious reasons, everything will be compared to the arcade version of the game.
Dreamcast: For all intents and purposes, arcade perfect. There have been some complaints about speed differences between the arcade and DC versions, but it's an established fact that there IS no standard arcade speed. Different arcade cabinets all set on the default speed of 3 will have slight (sometimes major) speed differences for no apparent reason.
PlayStation 2: Pretty much identical to the DC version (and therefore, identical to the arcade), the PS2 version does sport slightly higher resolution. Nothing game-affecting, though.
Mr. Beef, I'll try to hit you up for some games of CVS2 in the next couple weeks. I've played a handful of my FG thread hommies in here and everyone is way legit. I'm always curious how good everyone else that posts is.

Capcom VS SNK 2 - Dreamcast or PS2
Marvel VS Capcom - No arcade perfect port. Dreamcast version has incorrect hitboxes.
Marvel VS Capcom 2 - Dreamcast
Soul Calibur II - Not sure, maybe B:L can shed light here? It's either PS2 or GCN. The Xbox one had a bug/glitch with one of Ivy's moves.
Super Street Fighter II TURBO - No arcade perfect port. Closest one is on Capcom's Classics Collection Vol. 2. Many top players who are used to the arcade version will note the timing/slight lag with the PS2 version.
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike - No arcade perfect port. Closest one is PS2. Timing is a BIT different on console.
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection - PS3
Tekken Tag Tournament - You'd think PS2, but it's not arcade perfect... :(
Virtua Fighter 5 - Xbox 360

In before someone posts Street Fighter IV DX setup being 24,000 USD....
The DX setup includes 4 arcade cabinets and has LAN play setup so if arcade owners have machines setup across the arcade dude at machine 1 can play dude at machine 8 without having to sit VS style (across) from them.
The Taito Type X2 arcade board alone is only 1,500, so you do the math on how much rape Capcom is charging.

My thoughts: Played about 2 hours and it's what I expected. Lots of crap to unlock (that's a good thing). 1-Player mode is great. I also played a match with a friend online and it ran very smooth, but he kicked my ass anyways. If you don't know already SSBB uses a different friend code than the Wii console. As for controls I tried using the Wii Classic controller and my guy was sliding all around, I couldn't control him well. The controller just sucks. I prefer the ol' wavebird, feels natural.

I do think it's kind of funny how the 360 box art is just a giant middle finger to people with that system... you get Yoda and some fairy-ass box art. Or at least, I like the PS3's art better.
It's weird though... It's not coming out for arcades... console first...
I have 1% hope that it will be a decent competitive game.
:/
Don't get me wrong... I had my fair share of fun with SC II and SC III, but what really killed it wasn't the gameplay balance, or crazy bugs/glitches... it was the lack of support from the community and people just stopped playing it altogether.
I believe with having a fighting game come out on arcades first... helps the longevity in the long run... (this is not always the case though)...

It doesn't seem like there are too many branching paths. The story seems pretty random, but it's also because it hops from one group of characters to the next, sometimes with no warning.
Should prolly put the Brawl code in the sig. That is, if I have room.

wasn't that whole ad mainly just a promotion for Sega helping namco with Tekken.net?
Nope it was just an advertisement for both franchises, this was way before Tekken Net was ever conceptualized... This was back in the TTT pre T4 days.

They restored some power to Kirby! oh man! forward smash and SH Dair are crazy~
I wanna like Ike but he's mega slow. I thought his down tilt spike was sick though, that thing is mega fast, and his forward tilt is nice but I can't get it out enough and ended up doing smashes. I also like that one guy, Lucas. He seems to have a good moveset and the lack of a slow dashdance / wavedash makes it a lot easier to connect with the bat... it also seems like he crits a lot easier. Link feels like crap though, I'd rather play as Pit... I have no idea what Mario's downB thing is, Luigi's uppercut crits a lot easier (they totally didn't need that), love the priority on Dedede's Nair... Brawl actually kinda feels good when you play 1v1 and not FFA.
I still can't believe they still let you jumpcancel Fox's shine though =( and you don't need to wavedash to grab ledge and edgehog. I'm not completely used to that, and it's kinda cool because you don't need a lot of technical know how to do it. Also my random falling off the stage for no reason and dying is still intact =)
I also played T5 DR last Friday at SVGL. Wow, that game is weird. I still can't block lows or get up after being knocked down and never learned the changes... wtf happened to Anna? Seems like I can't get up safely at all against her. And sidesteps seem really good too.
I hear UC Davis is gonna get the first T6 machine? Serious?

This is pretty much my biggest complaint about the Smash Bros. series. I need more cut and dry rules for losing in a fighting game. Giant Wario randomly farting on me (I think that's what he did) and blowing me off the stage when I'm at 40% is maddening. It's still fun but at the same time, I still don't understand the appeal of "mastering" Smash Bros.

So my main in SSBB is Marth right... I love his aerials and down tilt A... I gotta get better at edge guarding and spiking with his down smash though...
I love his up+B at high percentages... ^_^ that's the only time I'll ever use it...
His f+B strings are crazier now too...
I also use Luigi... trying to get down his jab into shin shoryuken combo ;)
If you don't know what it is, it's A (up close only), then free u+B... RAGE...

Well, actually, I was referring to my personal problem of dying at low percentages by accidentally running off the stage and trying to jump back and failing badly. It would happen at the dumbest time too, like I'd get a crazy kill off of some cool combo / spike and then run away from the opponent's starting invincibility and end up falling off the stage.
I think the main problem with people not understanding competitive Smash is the fact that it's based on a set of rules (1v1/2v2, no items, specific balanced stages) defined byt tournaments. They make perfect sense in terms of balance but it's hard to convince casuals to play anything that's not a chaotic FFA with items on.
As far as dying is concerned, I actually like it. In Brawl it's kind of maddening if your character does not have a good smash and it's hard to eliminate them... I was playing 1v1 with my bro, Diddy vs. Samus and we routinely had 180%+ lives. But overall, it's exciting; lead changes are entirely possible with mistakes and there's a bigger emphasis on positional play. It's definitely unconventional but really fun when you get used to it and it's also more fun to watch because of the comeback potential.
I'm only concerned with 1v1s though... so I'm hoping my other bro does all the character unlocking. And I need to find me another Gamecube controller somewhere...
So my main in SSBB is Marth right... I love his aerials and down tilt A... I gotta get better at edge guarding and spiking with his down smash though...

They didn't change his downtilt A from melee, did they? I always liked using it but didn't feel like it was that good. And I think his aerials are toned down too but apparently, they're still good. I can't combo my Fairs though. =P Lack of wavedashing hurts his tipper game which was big for me.
For edge guarding / spiking, a common situation with Marth in Melee was to grab edge, and then ledge hop Dair spike or Bair. It's much easier in this game since you can just run off the stage and then hold the direction back. From my experience it's a lot harder in Brawl to get people off the stage to actually edgeguard though.
Man I'm excited about this game. I had no faith in it till I tried 1v1 yesterday, finally, and it seems good enough...

Long time no see everyone. I did a search on the thread and have noticed that no one mentioned that Sega announced that they are bringing the second Bleach fighting game to the US. The game will be called Bleach: Dark Souls and has a Summer release date. I am very excited since I played the original game alot on my DS. I was thinking about buying the Japanese version at the Best Buy nearby, but I decided to wait for the US release. For a link to the Sega press release check this Kotaku link. http://kotaku.com/365487/ds-gets-bleached
I would also like to add that I really miss posting and reading the discussions here and I love the SNK releases this year!

Yeah, I'm always feeling the same. Large reason why I don't have energy to enjoy smash is because the whole game feels too random. I only like it when there's high level play with barely or no items and random stage crapping.

Yeah, at my old college those matches were the only ones I stuck around to watch being played. Some damn good fights and I wanted to play badly but was way under skilled at the time (still that way).
I just don't like being killed by randomness when I know I have a good opponent. It's like if you were playing Tekken and a bunch of go karts suddenly drove through the middle of the fight... I'd be pissed.

x-posted from the brawl thread because i figure i can get better reactions from you guys:
mega brain fart:
---
holy crap, Zelda is ridiculously buff!
i like how they used twilight princess model. i haven't played that game but she looks mega hot with blond hair.
with that aside:
F+B is the most awesomest move ever. it's mega fast, can kill at 90-120% (!!), you can edge guard with it... wow.
Fair has to crit at at least 60%+ to kill but it's still good. all her smashes are good and can be followed up with F+B. Uair can kill at 70%+, Dair can spike with a crit, all her throws can be followed by F+B. basically, you can F+B everything. you can even rush down with F+B, it's THAT good. and her recovery is insane... on all her air attacks there's almost no lag and a ton of range.
neutral B is a lot quicker than Melee and it has its uses... much better than melee where it wasn't really that great.
only flaws i see in her game are recovery... if you fall off the stage and drift inside, you can't recover. also, f+b in the air has recovery but it's not really worth using in the air anyway. but man, she's sooooo good. i might make her my main.
---
i also like kirby. he's not dumb and slow like melee. f+smash has got good range and speed and you can kill with it easily. up+b has more range on the projectile and makes for good edge guarding, and i really like the priority and safety of his Fair. he's just fun to play as and pretty solid... not as ridiculous as zelda or...
---
lucas is also really good. massive priority on attacks, his lightning makes for insane edge guarding ability, his recovery is a lot better because the post-drift after the lightning is pretty fast. he even has an easy spike!
---
link sucks. he's super slow. i mean. damn. just slow and no good. toon link is a lot better. i love how his Dair spikes but how you gotta be so precise... makes for exciting fun! the angle on the arrow is weird though.
---
i don't know why but i can't really see the hype behind marth or D3 or even metaknight right now... not with zelda and lucas being so ridiculous.
system-wise, i lamented the absence of wavedash but the basic dash is actually pretty cool. lack of L-cancel is also kinda sad, and i'm so used to it that i still l-cancel anyway =) i'm not really in the habit of shield-cancelling the run yet. i also need to learn how to glide cancel, that looks ridiculously good. looks like Just Defends are a lot easier and might even be important. ledges are way easier to grab... both a good and bad thing. you can grab from far away which is kinda annoying at times but i also like how you can grab from both sides.
yay, fun fun fun. can't wait to run the tourney scene. it's a lot more fun than i really expected once i started playing 1v1s.

Basically, just to make sure, you should go into the nvidia settings, and then go to the place that lets you change the video settings for specific games. The Japanese version of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection ONLINE (http://sdtekken.com/t5dr/online/) will be getting a nice free update on March 18th! Included in this update is vibration support for Dual Shock 3 controllers and some new options to help streamline the online experience! You can now play a quick 1 on 1 battle through the ‘PICKUP MATCH’ option… Battle lobbies will now show room names instead of player host names as well. Also, if you don’t have a Dual Shock 3 yet… They will be released in North America on April 15th for an MSRP of $54.99. If you can’t wait, just import it from Play-Asia (http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-fku-49-en.html) where there are already three colors available (http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-fku-49-en-15-dual%20shock%203-84-p.html)! More news on this update when we get it…

I'm such a Smash Bros. n00b.
I finally finished SSE and have Toon Link + Star Wolf left to unlock. Every single frikkin' time I've been up against them, I get my ass handed to me.
This game is fun.

Ahhh! Finally pickup matches in TDR online, I hated waiting like 15 minutes just to get owned in less than one.

Oh and, Battle Fantasia (PS3) JPN version is shipping May 29th.
Wow, how did I miss that :)
Definitely going to put down a pre-order at PA for that one. Hopefully enough people buy it to get a translated guide/wiki out for it.

Battle Fantasia is 100% coming out in the US. I can confirm now. With extra modes. You heard it here first.

Though barely fighting-related, Yoshi's down+a in the air is mad cheap in Boss Rush mode.
And I don't think I'll be using Rock anymore for my CvS2 team. Sorry buddy, but Joe and Yun had a vote.

Just finished with 100% in SSE mode. Now to unlock stages & get some trophies. I probably have about 2,000 coins to spend now. What's great about SSBB is that once you complete something there's always something else to do. This game is packed with mashed potato goodness.
