If a TV is 25 inches diagonally, what is it's width? Keep in mind that the height to width ratio is 4:3 on a regular TV. I can't believe I can't figure this out... I know there is something like a^2+b^2=c^2 and c^2=25 in this case and a/b=4/3 and then there are some substitutions or something... am I doing this right?

OK, I think it's just a 3-4-5 triangle so the width is 16", correct? Math is melting my brain!!!!

Just measure.

Are you just trying to find out if the TV will fit in an opening? If so I would just take a tape measure, or a string with markings if you don't want to lug the tape measure around.

25/5 = x/4

x=20"

^ Yup, he's right. One side will be 20, the other 15.

That won't really work on real-world TVs, only on ideal triangles. In the real world TVs all have different amounts of molding and stuff around the edges. Newer flat-screen TVs typically have speakers on the side as well. You better use a tape measure.

^ I'm not saying he's right or wrong... but your figures on his equation are all wrong.

*EDIT* This was intended for thestuff's post.

It's WAY too early for learning stuff... Pythagorean theorems are for wussie crybabies... :twisted:

How is that even difficult enough to be classified "for nerds"?

on a right angle triangle
a squared + b squared = c squared

and there are special ones listed before like the 3,4,5 triangles

Techincally yes, in a true 3:4:5 triangle, the width of a 25" diagonal is 20", but tv's A. are not true 4:3 ratio (they're close) and B. as said before, there is trim around the screen that make the width larger.

is this the traditional 4:3 or widescreen 16:9 format? and does it have speakers on the side or is it just a monitor? too many factors...the correct answer is not enough information
