Sound/music plays an important role in a game for me, and that is a pet peeve of mine if a VO/actor just plain blows chunks. It takes me out of the experience of the game and we don't like that. We need more Rei in this title Rei make it happen. ;)

Gun was pretty great. Cool story, great voice acting. Only problem is it was very short. How does it end? Something tells me it ends on a cliffhanger but i can't remember.

Well I bought the game like three months ago and has been in plastic until last week. Does that count? I actually liked the missions and such. The last boss is a lot of fun. Well the second part. It is pretty decent. It is 3 DVDs long for the whole series. Can be watched in an afternoon. I am sure you can find it for pretty cheap online some where, like youtube. It isn't the best, but it is worth a watch. If you can get past the horrible animation from many years ago. It would make a great video game. It would make a great SSB clone.

I knew DW6 was going to get smashed by reviewers, but I didn't think it'd get this low from IGN:

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/852/852783p1.html

Whenever I read these reviews, I feel like the reviewers just don't get the point of a hack and slash game. Anyways, looks like I'm getting this 360 version if the differences are as big as this review says.

Thats not very nice man, granted I'm not into the series either but to say "it's the worst thing in video games ever" is a little extreme. I can think of other games (easy) that I would put in the phail list before DW would even be nominated. Glover anyone? Really just trying to stay neutral on this but you just have to remember to each their own ya know? I mean Inu is playing K&L and I just don't understand his taste first with Turok and then K&L it boggles my mind. (Hell next he will want to play Time Shift...) I just remember to each their own and it helps out a lot.

I love the Dynasty Warriors series. I like its take on the 3 Kingdom's Story, it brings it to life in a modern epic way.

The gameplay is great, I love how it blends the tactical part with a hack-and-slash, and I hate how reviewers pan it because of their propensity to button mash. I can't say it's particularly deep... but it is interesting enough, especially when you play at a hard enough difficulty level. It's also a great feeling when you do all the tactical parts right, doing all the ambushes correctly, setting fires, etc.

Anybody catch the Dunk Contest?
Dwight Howard man... =O love that Superman "dunk".

Professor Layton is probably the weirdest puzzle game ever. It's like...here's 1 difficulty puzzle, here are a 5, 6, 7 and 8 difficulty puzzles. Here's a 10 difficulty puzzle. Here's a 1 again. Here's an 11.

It's still a good game. Maybe not 9 material, but definitely a solid pickup for DS owners. When will the good games stop coming out so I can go through my backlog? Honestly. It's making my wallet cry.

Okay, I think its time to try another CAG Gaming Club Discussion. Last time we settled on DMC1 and I don't think that went over too well.

Nomination process will start now and run until the end of the day. At which point, we will settle on a total of 6 nominees and start a poll that will run all day Monday. The chosen game will be announced Monday night.

A few other things:
All nominees should be seconded.
No nominees will be accepted for current-gen consoles. (Current-gen handhelds are fine.)
Preference will be given towards easy-to-find & cheaply-obtainable games.
Preference will be given towards multi-console releases over exclusives.
Preference will be given towards games requiring more than 10 hours but less than 30 hours to complete.
InuFaye cannot nominate any Turok game.Anything else to add?

Otherwise, we'll let the nominations begin.

Whenever I read these reviews, I feel like the reviewers just don't get the point of a hack and slash game. Anyways, looks like I'm getting this 360 version if the differences are as big as this review says.I'm still going to get it on PS3 (for the downloadable game save in case I get too lazy to unlock certain things). My good friend in real life will be buying on 360 (360 is all he has) and we will mostly play multi-player on his version anyway (I usually play mine single player). The Japanese impressions I read back in November had both versions pretty much equal, where any graphical difference was just a matter of what each console had a strength in. I remember IGN said the same thing about Assassin's Creed on PS3 (saying it had slowdown and stuff), and many said the game was fine on PS3 (except for a few freezing issues which a patch seemed to solve). IGN gave the 360 version of Samurai Warriors 2 a much worse score than the PS2 version (I got the game on 360. 360 version had some form of online play, less pop-up, etc.) while giving the 360 version of Warriors Orochi a higher score on 360 compared to PS2 (when in reality, the ports were pretty much handled the same way and no online addition was made). I still haven't gotten Warriors Orochi myself though.

As for the Musou series, I'll admit Samurai Warriors is my favorite, but I do like DW fans. I dunno, I find some kind of hook to killing 100-700 enemies, gaining levels, finding items, defeating officers, etc. Every time I play them, I just can't put them down. I understand most will find them repetitive, but it doesn't bother me anyway. The only thing I will admit is I tend to not keep older Musou games around for long, and just upgrade to the next each year.

Game playing will be limited today. I spent too much time hanging out with friends (not a bad thing) and need to work extra hard on my project.

suko_32

Yeah, I'm waiting on more reviews or people's hand on impressions before I make my final decision. I was reading on gamefaqs and the PS3 people said what you said about the PS3 Japanese version. I took it with a grain of salt because it's gamefaqs, but for some reason I'm inclined to believe them. It might be because the IGN reviewer said DW: Gundam was more fun than DW6...

Also, going to sell my Samurai Warriors 2 (PS2) soon because for some reason it's getting decent money on ebay and I already have too many SW/DW/ and a Warriors Orochi in the household. There's also that Samurai Warriors 2 + XL combo that's supposedly coming out on 360 around summer time for $30.

I couldn't get 100% on Gun, so I am going to come back later. I am going to start working my way through Mass Effect and some other RPGs that I need to get through. March 9th is just around the corner and I don't know how much time I will have to put serious time into games! TMK needs to put more time into DMC4 or he needs to update his scores. I know, because I need to do this as well. DMC 4 keeps calling me.

well I started playing WotL last night to see if I should really buy it and I'm still on the fence about it. I do have some credit and with my employee discount I can get it cheap, but I'm trying to stay from just impulse buying like I have been. I dunno. I've been playing advance wars days of ruin on my ds and burnout paradise on the 360. Love both.

Because I was scared it would be one of those games that doesn't subtitle the CG scenes (NIS is notorious for this), and I'd miss some of the story. Now I'm used to it. Normally switching to Japanese is an automatic thing for me.

Let me interrupt my boycott of this GGT to respond to whoknows' typical brand of stupidity.

I see absolutely zero reason why anyone anytime should ever have to be okay with lowered standards to fit your screwed up notions of how things should be. If you honestly believe that Dynasty Warriors is something you could give the average person who plays games and they would have fun with it and not be bored with it's button mashing nonsense or completely disinterested in what Lu Bu and Bu Bai and Chang Dai are doing because their names aren't distinctive at all to anyone who speaks english, please reconsider your hobby. Beat em ups were doing more inventive things 10 years ago.

It's such a tragedy that US game press has higher standards and expects something new from a series' 6th iteration, not counting the between numbered additions that puts it well beyond 10.

Dynasty Warriors-Guilty pleasure at best, but really just absolute trash.

Lost Odyssey is really good. Really, really good. I love how the boss fights are tuned just so that you barely scrape by. It's the most stressful RPG I've played in a long time. Reminds me of FFX in those awesome ways.

QFT, FFX was pretty easy if you bothered to level up and get some skills, which I was addicted to. I have Yuna and Rikku dealing 99,999 damage with their physical attacks. Yuna's stats are all in the 200's. And since the summon monsters' stats are tied to her stats, they are godlike.

Not really worth responding too, but you're being quite hypocritical. DW may not do anything new (and I'm far from a fan of the series so I wouldn't know even if it did), but please tell me something new Lost Odyssey does? Lost Odyssey doesn't need to do anything especially new, because it does what it does well. It has an interesting story, good graphics, and battles that actually are challenging. It is nice being able to run at top speed through areas, though. And the level-cap that removes the need for grinding is a good addition as well. It's also got a nice low random encounter rate. Aside from that, the last time we got an RPG from these guys in this style was 2001 with FFX. A 7 year hiatus in "more of the same" style games is more than acceptable.

Dynasty Warriors never did things right. If I read correctly one of the "innovations" the 6th game introduces are swimming and climbing ladders? What the fuck? Clunky, boring , and repetitive, and it even looks like ass. It's just a bad game and absolutely not worth $60 for the extremely incremental changes they make. Koei is just as bad as EA or Activision about milking their fanbase, and people would see that if they weren't blinded by the foreign feel of the games.

I'm just extremely offended that you think press should lower their standards just because it's something you like. The gaming press should never lower their standards, and I'd always rather see a game get underrated than overrated. But maybe I just value my $60 more than most.

Lost Odyssey has a level cap that removes your ability to level up past what the developers have decided is appropriate for the boss/area you're in. So think FFX level of strategy required, without the ability to level grind. Lost Odyssey offers little room for mistakes, especially in boss battles.

The cutscenes aren't any longer than a normal final fantasy game. Sakaguchi was misquoted about the 20hours of cutscenes bit. You might spend a lot of time reading the memories, but those are really well done and very interesting. This comes from someone who hates the dialog in most RPGs and skips it when I can. Well I'm not really much of a movie person, I don't care for paying to see one, and I own very few dvds.

Reading is fine, I don't mind it, but I feel long cutscenes break up the pace and action of a game, especially when they're after every single thing you do in the game. If I hated reading, I probably wouldn't play the rpg's I do, but I often find it hard for me to remember things later down the road when the game is very text heavy.

I don't watch a lot of movies. I generally enjoy action movies and some comedies. I'm usually picky, and I almost always HATE the obvious Oscar driven movies, where it seems the whole movie is designed to get an Oscar.

I like text heavy RPGs because I read faster than characters would speak. I don't mind long cutscenes if they are done well and skipable so I don't have to watch them every time. And usually VO's aren't that good anyway.

No, but seriously, unless you're mentally handicapped and struggled with high school literature, Lost Odyssey's 1,000 year dreams are good so far. Nice little text effects and backgrounds/sounds to go along with the stories. They aren't that long either. Since Kaim is remembering various events from his 1,000 years on earth, they're all very unique and give a nice break from the main story as well.

I hate stories in 99% of games, but LO has hooked me. It's not an easy thing to do.

Didn't really bother me, in fact I prefer it over turn based. Plus no random battles is a huge plus.

Although there are cases where random battles are ok, like in Rogue Galaxy since there's no loading screen, the enemies just appear and you kill them. That game is so awesome.

A text heavy game with good VO's is great. Disgaea was a great example of that. But a text heavy game with terrible VO's is not so great. Without something there to keep me interested while there is conversation going on usually ends up with me glancing over the text and continuously hitting the next button.

Long cutscenes are ok if they're skippable. But I still don't care for them much.

I need both myself. I can't imagine not playing great games like Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect, Uncharted, and Heavenly Sword.I'm the same way too. Although I tend to buy most multi-platform games on PS3, I will not deny that owning all consoles is very important to me. I know for sure I could not go without playing a new Ratchet, Hot Shots Golf, Uncharted, PGR, Blue Dragon, etc. I enjoy playing different consoles and getting the opportunity to play the exclusives (although exclusives this gen are shrinking compared to last gen). My game console/handheld playing can be lop-sided at times, but having a console/handheld in case an exclusive comes is still important to me.

As for FFXII, there's no denying I've been a big FF fanboy over the years, but I've had a lot of trouble getting into it, but then again, the team who created it, I'm not one of their biggest fans (I know many loved Vagrant Story, but I wasn't a huge fan personally, which the same team created). I still really want to beat it one day like I did other FF games. Battles aren't too bad, but I just haven't found the "hook" to continue playing it (I know I bought it around several other RPGs, but I ended up playing some of them more). Hopefully when I clear some backlog, I'll beat it.

If you've got a decent PS3, decent taste in original Xbox games (Yes, Barbie Horse Adventures), and a Wii, there's little need for a PS2, Xbox, or GC. 99% of the PS1/N64/Saturn generation is crap that needs to be forgotten, and slowly but surely the downloadable content on current gen systems is covering the bases of the older stuff.

Then again, I'm of the mindset that having a large collection of anything is pretty silly.

The first 2 bosses, and those cavalry are probably the hardest fights in the game. It actually gets easier from there. There really aren't any tips I can give you for them. Hope the cavalry doesn't use rush a lot. Not sure if you got the preorder bonus item, but the guard skill it gives you is very helpful here. As soon as you bring down the shield on the back row get those cavalry units out of there.

I dunno, I prefered the PS3 controller for DW, oh well. If this is the case, I will be picking up the 360 version.

I told suko_32 before, I'm only taking IGN with a grain of salt (probably still will get PS3 version) because those who played the Japanese version said the differences between the two version are very minor and slowdown wasn't excessive (well, any slowdown is basically the same slowdown in every DW game). Unless it was inserted in translation, I doubt it. They made the comment over Assassin's Creed too. I mentioned it earlier how IGN gave the 360 version of SW2 a much worse review, when it had additions and ran better than the PS2 one (I also bought the 360 version of the game and it was fine). Warriors Orochi didn't make the additions SW2 did, and received a higher score than the PS2 version. That's why I can't follow trust them (I'm honestly not trying to tell everyone to buy the PS3 version (and in both reviews, nothing was said as to which was better), I just find this very weird how they've done this, while other reviewers have given the versions the same score). If anything, I'd want until people play both versions (Gamers in forums are much more trusted by me than reviewers).

As for NG2, I wouldn't be surprised if it slipped later in the summer, but I do plan to get it (if I have money). The game looks fun and I liked the previous NG games (despite the extreme difficulty).

Assassin's Creed (no freezing on 360)

The problem with Eternal Sonata on the PS3 is that nothing has been announced for the U.S. You would think they would release it here as well seeing as how the translation has been already done and all.

The problem with Eternal Sonata on the PS3 is that nothing has been announced for the U.S. You would think they would release it here as well seeing as how the translation has been already done and all.I'm waiting for the Japanese official release, since that's when most RPGs get announced for stateside (some get announced before hand, but usually that's not the case). What does have me figuring the possibility of a stateside release is:
-When Eternal Sonata first appeared on the ESRB.org site (too bad I can't find an old capture of it for proof), it listed it as 360 and PS3. That was the first indication it was also coming to PS3 one day.

-On the morning of September 11th last year, Namco Bandai America's site listed (http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/09/11/eternal-sonata-website-lists-ps3-as-platform/) Eternal Sonata on PS3 and 360 (I absolutely remembered seeing it with my own eyes too), along with listing Beautiful Katamari on PS3, Wii, and 360 (now a few retailers are listing Beautiful Katamari to come to other platforms). Two days later Famitsu confirmed it on PS3.

Oh yeah, this link kind of keeps track of it all:
http://www.dpfiles.com/showthread.php?t=82076

Now if neither of these two things occurred, I would have probably assumed it was Japan only. But with two listings, I somewhat have to wonder (Eternal Sonata did not have the Only on 360 stamp, but BK and AC6 did). But in reality, who knows. What I'm doing is taking a little wait and see, but if I see the 360 version at a good price (I'm talking about $30 or less, since I cannot play an RPG fully until summer), I'll buy on impulse regardless.

Anyway, suko_32, don't you have CoD4 on PS3?? I thought you did, but don't completely remember. I'm hoping to try to organize CoD4 nights a bit better soon.

I probably had the lowest game playing time this weekend. Spent a lot of time with friends, project, and working on my tax return.

My buddy and I broke out the DC last night for some good ol 2 player vs MVC2. Played for a solid 2 hours until my hand started to hurt from using that pad.

I'm thinking of the possibility that Eternal Sonata may have been a timed exclusive like AC6. Namco must of been really easy to bribe lol.

But yeah, I do have CoD4 for PS3. It's really fun, except when the servers decide to throw a fit.

Let me go down the list of games I need to play for 360:
Crackdown
Lost Odyssey
Mass Effect
Halo 3
Blue Dragon
Bioshock
Orange Box (better framerate on 360)
skate. (better framerate on 360)
Assassin's Creed (no freezing on 360)
Condemned
Eternal Sonata
Lost Planet (I'm assuming this is going to be a bad port to PS3)

Soo... I think I'll be alright. If there's any system to regret, it's the Wii. I may never own more than 5 games for it #-o

Assassin's Creed has the freezing problem on the 360 version. Towards the end of the game, it froze on me 3 separate times, and no other game I've ever played on the 360 has done that to me. From what I read around the internet, it was a natural occurence.

I never had ass creed freeze on ps3 for me, but I play games so fast that the console lags to keep up with me.

LOL at Lost Planet on the PS3 having a 5GB mandatory install.

http://kotaku.com/357453/capcom-please-enough-with-the-mandatory-installsWe already know about it. Capcom's games are the only ones with the large mandatory install. The majority of games leave it optional. Many of us are starting to think there's a flaw with Capcom's engine running on PS3 which causes it. There are a few other games that have a mandatory install or cache, but they never exceeded 2 GB. Games like Uncharted, Burnout, etc. don't have loading issues (Uncharted has zero loading after the initial) and have zero install data.

Basically, I'll probably be buying Lost Planet on PS3 after I get a larger HDD. :-( I'll admit I was going to buy on release, but now I'll just get Patapon and so on instead (read the PS3 forum Lost Planet thread to see why I'm getting the PS3 version (mostly has to do with PSN gaming group)).
First DMC and now this? If you have a 20GB you're gonna be screwed eventually :/There are less than 200k 20GB PS3 consoles total (I'm thinking more like 150k) in NA, so that is a small percentage of the PS3 market (It was discontinued back in Jan. 2007 here). I plan to upgrade my HDD to a 250GB regardless. The reason I waited was because I didn't want to lose my Minna No Golf 5 demo which was taken off the Japanese store. But since we are getting the game next month, it no longer matters to me. Right now I just need to see if I can afford it:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822149070

Or maybe I'll just get 160GB for $85:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822149058

I kind of want to go big because as long as I'm upgrading, I might as well. If I had an awesome job, I'd just go ahead with a 500GB.

yeah. the article talks about how there's speculation that capcom has a problem with doing cross platform releases between the 360 and ps3.

I can imagine that if MH3 was still coming to the PS3, there'd be a mandatory install on that as well.

I can imagine that if MH3 was still coming to the PS3, there'd be a mandatory install on that as well.Well, most MMORPGs or online RPGs will have a HDD install, so I could understand it having one regardless. But from what I believe, Capcom was originally going to make an engine more suited for the PS3 on Monster Hunter (which explained the higher development costs). But I dunno, because games like Folklore, RR7, NG Sigma, etc. have an install option, but if you don't use it (I didn't), the loading isn't even all that bad. Capcom's only response so far is you really want to have the quicker load times, so I dunno.

Even if it is a small percentage of owners, it's still going to catch up and screw them over in the end (like how you have to upgrade your HDD).

The Mana Knight

Even if it is a small percentage of owners, it's still going to catch up and screw them over in the end (like how you have to upgrade your HDD).The same could be said about those who bought a PS1 early and had to buy some sort of analog controller to play some games (like Ape Escape for example). Although the controller was only $30 (and PS1 didn't start selling like hotcakes until consoles started coming with the Dual Shock). And there was also the N64 expansion pack required to play Zelda. There are core/Arcade 360 consoles out there, and they can't play Burnout Paradise online unless they buy a HDD (http://www.videogamer.com/news/30-01-2008-7383.html). Although in a different way, those who wanted to play FFXI on PS2 and could no longer find a new fat PS2 weren't able to play the game (since PS2 slim consoles couldn't support the HDD). Basically almost every generation, there will always be a percentage of people getting screwed in some way or another.

Although, I'd through out the number that I feel around 25-30% of 20GB owners have upgraded their HDD (I know dallow has, a bunch at PSU, etc.) by now and roughly half will. The greater majority of serious PS3 owners though (ones who will download a decent number of PSN games along with buying several retail games), probably have a 60GB or 80GB (at a poll at the biggest . SCE knows the 20GB was a mistake which is why they got rid of it so quickly (not just because of HDD size, but from a manufacturing costs, it was the SKU they lost the most money on, $300 lost per each one sold). 20GB also gets screwed because upgrading to wireless on it is very expensive (which is the main reason I do regret getting a 20GB).

EDIT: I'm trying to find the poll posted at the biggest PS3 forum on the internet (that's not the official one), but I remember the results being somewhere around 85% had a 60GB, around 8% with an 80GB, 5% with a 40GB and around 2% or less with a 20GB. This was before Christmas I believe (so the 60GB percentage probably went down while 40 and 80 went up). This may not be the real percentage, but I was just giving a good estimated range. ;)

That's just what we get for being cheap (kind of like if you bought a 360 Core or even an Arcade). Although, a 20GB PS3 has 18GB of free space, so you can technically fit the game. Most developers do have the assumption people would play a game, then delete it off the HDD anyway.

Really? I never had one problem with it on my 360 and this is the first I have heard of a widespread problem.

I ordered Lost Odyssey, bitches! So far from YF360G I have gotten:

GRAW 2
Mass Effect
1 year of XBL
Lost Odyssey

I don't think I have spent $60 total on all that stuff. Such an awesome site.

Oh yea I'm not disagreeing with that, and I'll be the first to admit the others are just as guilty. It still doesn't make it right and, IMO, it's unacceptable. But anyway, the mandatory install is indeed Capcom's fault for this one, figuring people would be willing to make HDD space just for their games. Yeah, they should make it optional, but if there's indeed a flaw with Capcom's engine, then what else can Capcom/Sony do eh? But overall, if this was an install that would be larger than a 20GB HDD itself, then it would be very unacceptable (because 20GB owners could not play it). Although 5GB is large, 20GB owners can still play it.

I played all weekend long since my friends were working.Lol. ;) That's usually the case, but I'll admit there were some people I kind of talked to before, but that was it. This time, I actually decided to hang with them and actually went really well. I don't want to get into a long rant over my life, but I would try being friends with many people but it just never worked out (partially because they were either heavy into drinking, could not find common interests, etc.).

The HDD install doesn't help 20GB owners as much too because when remembering it, the 20GB has less cache than all other HDDs, and I remember VF5 on PS3 having instant loads with the 60GB, while the 20GB was 3X longer. I can't wait to ditch the HDD. :D Part of the reason I just don't recommend the 20GB PS3 console unless you plan to rarely play PS3 games. I'm still also debating if I should just upgrade the HDD or buy a new PS3 (I also have plans to replace my 360 in the future).

Don't forget, Hot Shots Golf has a mandatory install as well. So it's not just Capcom games.I heard there was a big install for the Japanese version because the online was not complete on release (It was gradually being worked on). The U.S. thankfully will have a more complete online. Then again, I also heard the MMO elements online kind of factor into the equation.

But oh well, I'm tired of discussing HDDs and such. I'm thinking I should play some Wii tonight. I really need to play SMG more since I have just over 20 stars.
