MP demo out now:
Our mother always used to tell us that "destroying something beautiful is always better if you do it with friends." She was, of course, a known anarchist and generally untrustworthy. You can imagine, then, how interested we are to test her words in the destructive Red Faction: Guerrilla (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/red-faction-guerrilla) MP demo, which is now available to all 360 and PS3 owners (or at least it will be available when the PSN update drops).

If our mom was on the level (it would be quite the anomaly) and you have a blast, you'll be able to pick up the full game on June 2.

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/21/red-faction-guerrilla-mp-demo-now-available-for-everyone/

Out on June 2nd:

Much like Godzilla or Oprah, our thirst for destruction can never be slaked, but it appears we'll be getting some brief respite from our compulsions a touch earlier than anticipated. THQ has announced that the destructive action of Red Faction: Guerrilla (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/red-faction-guerrilla) will now appear in the US on June 2nd, a week before it was originally supposed to drop (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/01/red-faction-guerrilla-to-release-june-9-demo-on-april-23/).

Our friends in Europe have also had their release bumped up a week to June 5, but everyone knows they don't have quite our hunger for building-destroying carnage that we do.

Old News:
EDIT 4/8/08:
Here is a hands-on from Kotaku:
One thing the Red Faction series was known for (if you remember it that is) was its destructible environments. Aside from that though, the series was a pretty typical linear shooter with not a whole lot to make it truly memorable. The developers of the newest game in the series, Red Faction Guerrilla, have taken the game's original concept and turned it on it's ear, creating an open world environment that feels more like GTA type game than either of its predecessors. If you like plenty of explosions and running around in large environments wreaking havoc on everything you see, this is definitely the game for you.
You play a member of the Red Faction, a group of resistors who are trying to protect the planet and its earthly inhabitants from the evil Earth Defense Force. Weapon choices are wide and varied including a giant mining hammer, an assault rifle, sticky bombs and a rocket launcher. These were the weapons of choice in the portion of the game I played, but I was assured that there were plenty more to use to bring down the enemies and buildings around you. The portion I enjoyed the most in the game was the various vehicles one could pilot around. Of the few that I saw, nothing was more fun than the giant mining mech/robot that you could hop into and roam around crunching things under your colossal feet and fists.
Destructible environments are certainly nothing new, but Red Faction Guerrilla takes it to a new level. Hiting a building once with a bomb doesn't just send the building tumbling to the ground in a giant mass, oh no. These buildings must be torn apart and taken down piece by piece. It's really quite a satisfying feeling knowing that it will take more than a simple kick in the balls to bring these structures down to size.
There was certainly plenty to do in the game besides just roaming around causing trouble. There were many missions dotting my map's landscape although in the short amount of time I had to see it I didn't get to complete more than one. This seemed to be one of the games everyone wanted to try and the lines were quite long. Unfortunately, I didn't really get much of a sense of the story from what was being shown. This is something I hope will come more into play when the game is released sometime next year. As interesting and graphically pleasing and fun as Red Faction: Guerrilla was, it will need more than exploding buildings and giant destructive mechs to keep me truly captivated.http://kotaku.com/376860/red-planet-hands-on-with-red-faction-guerrilla

It's featured in this month's Game Informer magazine. (Which I have right now.)

http://kotaku.com/353044/thq-get-a-little-chatty-about-red-faction-iii

Although we've known (http://kotaku.com/gaming/confirmation/new-red-faction-is-official-284811.php) another Red Faction game has been coming since last August, a conference call held by THQ earlier today has confirmed a few more details. For the first time it's been referred to as Red Faction III, no doubt upsetting spinoff and prequel fans the world over, while it was also announced that series veterans Volition will be back on development duties. The game will be appearing any time between April and next March, and will be available on 360, PS3 and PC.It sounds pretty cool, as it will feature the next generation of Geo-Mod. The graphics look good too.

The rail gun was implemented to perfection in the first game. It was still quite good in the second, but they toned it, and the camping spots, down a bit.

Has anyone tried getting the demo by pre-ordering at GS? I've tried two locations and both of them said they haven't received the demo cards yet...and the demo begins today and ends the 22nd.

Well I pre-ordered at my GS and they called me like 10 minutes later to inform me that they just literally got their shipment of demo codes after I walked out the door :wall:#-o:whee:

EDIT: I picked up my demo code this afternoon and will be playing after class. I'll post my initial impressions in this forum once I've got a couple hours into it.

So I got a chance to play the demo through twice and I'll share my thoughts...

First off, the demo itself is quite short. At maybe 5-10 minutes of game play, it feels like this should've been available for free on XBL. However, the game play itself is worth putting $5 down.

Everything is destructible, and I mean, everything. Initially you start out with an axe of sorts where you can start swinging away at people and things freely like a crazy person. My first encounter with an enemy was a one hit, one kill axe swing that sent him flying into a building, which afterward, destroyed a piece of the building. When something is destroyed, it stays like that the entire game. The physics are very well done and they feel a little over the top, but in a very enjoyable way.

The graphics are gorgeous. The surrounding atmosphere and land look and feel realistic but not overly done. Again, every piece of it is destructible and trust me, I was trying my hardest to find something that wouldn't go down and I couldn't find anything.

The controls, well, are going to be one of those things that are hit and miss with everyone. It's a third person shooter, unlike the previous Red Faction games, and it plays a lot like Lost Planet. However, the controls are VERY responsive and very smooth. There's nothing wrong with them unless you hate Lost Planet with a passion for some reason.

I don't want to give anything away, but the actual demo level and mission was VERY fun. Not like "This is a great looking game with excellent physics fun," but a laugh out loud kind of fun. Remember being a kid, playing with action figures or whatever, and you ended up blowing everything to pieces? Well it's a dream come true here. In this particular mission, you get a "vehicle" of sorts that had me saying "Hulk smash!" every 5 seconds....plus you get to ride on the back of a truck with enemy cars following you...and you're equipped with a rocket launcher. It's a very good time to be had by all.

I know this small review isn't professional (since I'm in a hurry) but I'm here to say that it's a hell of a fun game overall. The demo definitely sealed it for me as a day 1 purchase.

Tell me about it lol!

I guess it depends on how you play it too. If you want to just blaze through it, it will take 5 minutes or less. If you decide to explore a little bit, then it will take longer. I did both and enjoyed the experience either way. I tried killing every enemy but ended up dying haha. It's pretty fun to just tool around with for a while.

Yep, you sure can! I only put $5 down but I could always cancel it. Personally, I won't be canceling my pre-order because it's actually a good game haha.

Also, canceling a pre-order might tick off the employee since they are rewarded for taking pre-orders and dinged for refunding one. If anything, move the pre-order to another game you were already going to get. I hate GS just as much as the next guy, but I don't usually hate the associates. It's not their fault that I changed my mind or the game turned out to be crap, so I don't get my pre-orders refunded, just changed. Hell I moved my NHL 09 pre-order to like 4 different games before I actually picked a game I wanted lol.

Watching the Giantbomb quick look of this game has me interested. Though I couldn't help but think that this engine would be perfect for an Incredible Hulk game, drop you off in a neighborhood and let you just run the hell through houses.

If anybody wants to play the demo without preordering you can create an account at http://www.thq-games.com/uk/redfaction and get a key for free. The site says it's region locked but it isn't. I made an account and the demo works great.

When you throw a demo charge on an enemy they go crazy trying to shake it off. The games a blast, definitely a buyer for me.

The demo was fantastic. It seemed a lot smoother and more intuitive than other sandbox games. The setting is far less cheesy than SR2 and less sterile than GTA4.

But the best part was blowing everything up and being creative with the charges. That is what really set it apart for the rest for me, and guaranteed my pre-order. I played the PS3 demo, but will order the XBox version.

Had fun but Capcom cleared me out this sprin/early summer. It should be a fun mark down game. Reminds me of Crackdown but minus the super human antics and boring vehicles and add total Lego like destructibility. Plus you start with a sledge hammer and the setting is Mars which brings back memories of Outpost 2.

Finally played the demo tonight. Really liked it. Found it kinda hard at first, but once i figured out how the health system worked, it was a bit easier. I did find aiming a bit difficult, especially since you have to press down the right stick for precision aiming, little awkward. Overall, though, it was pretty great and I immediately put in a preorder in on Amazon to get the golden sledge hammer.

the demo was pretty smooth and watching things blow up/fall over was fun. I am not liking the sledgehammer at all though. a guy should not be able to kill me with one hammer blow FROM EIGHT human feet away

Flak
05-23-2009, 11:12 AM
That sounds like lag, I've never been killed that far back with a hammer. Speaking of hammers what's the difference between the two in the multiplayer demo besides cosmetics?

This game is definitely addictive and insanely fun. I loved the terrain deformation of the first two but I can't say I miss it. I'm still having fun planting det packs on key structure spots then watching it crumble from up in the air with my jetpack. Taking out a wall or tower with a sniper set up top is awesome too.

I played a little single player and multipayer last night with no prior experience to the demo or previous Red Faction games (I added it to my Gamefly queue based on reviews and buzz). The multiplayer was neat. I'm not sure how well it will hold up over time, but it seems like it will be worth playing for awhile. I loved the single player. It's unique enough to retain my interest and they absolutely nailed the ambient music. I don't know exactly why, but I actually felt like I was on Mars. It was weird how emotionally I was invested in the environment without being able to identify the reason.

There's so much amazing "fail!"/win in this game..

Watched a friend play it earlier today. He goes and takes out a streetlight's support, only to have the streetlight crashing down on top of him and he dies.

In a building, taking out supports, I hear the metal start to creak. I run towards the door. A steel beam falls down and hits me on the head, knocking me down, but it doesn't kill me.. unfortunately, the building falling on top of me before I could get up did the trick.

Ha, and I blew up two ends of a pipe that was over a road and the pipe fell down and blocked traffic.. until one crazy miner sped his truck through it.

I can't wait for some crazy YouTube videos to pop up.

Just rented the game tonight and just have been ignoring the story and playing around with bringing buildings down. The best thing is when something happens that you didn't anticipate. Like maybe some gas canisters were next to some explosives you set and then boom all hell breaks loose. Love the destructibility in it and can't wait to get some more time to play.

I did get a chance to play some multiplayer but had mixed opinions. No real strategy just running around smacking each other for the most part. Maybe with more xp and familiarity with the maps things will be a little more fun?

This game is awesome. It has its moments of frustration due to wonky bugs though. I died from a piece of debris falling on me before.

I havent touched any of the ores yet because it would be hard to keep track of them. I found like 31 in Parker so far, no idea how many are actually in there though.

The buildings/debris have never killed me in one hit. They just knock me down, and if multiple things continue to hit me, then my power drains accordingly.

This game was unbelievable. I had played the single-player demo so I just jumped into multiplayer when I had started it up.

It was full of action, the backpacks make it very unique, and the feeling when you smash a guy with a hammer...priceless :D. This was worth 60 dollars, but getting it for 39.99 through newegg 2 weeks after launch makes it one of my best deals of the year

This game is very good. I played the beta way back, and wasn't extremely impressed. It didn't feel like any of the other Red Faction games, because it isn't anything like them. But after having intensively played campaign mode in the retail version, I feel that this game is just as good as the original Red Faction. The multiplayer seems to be almost the same as the beta, except with more weapons/maps obviously. I think that the graphics are better too, but I don't have a means to directly compare the two.

Anyways, I paid $80 for two copies of this game (one for friend and one for myself), and I feel that it was money well spent. While I don't consider this game to be GOTY material, it certainly is a candidate for being the the game of the summer. Plus it can be had for ~$40, so it is worth the price of admission.

I just started playing this and I find to be incredibly fun and funny. There's nothing more satisfying than smashing down buildings with a giant hammer. I love trying to run from a falling tower only to have it fall right on my head. The first two were great and this game is right in line with them. I won't be putting this down for a while. I'll try multiplayer eventually, but I want to go through the story first.

Hey I think you are on my friends list, so anytime you see me on send me an invite. I was playing with another cag tonight which was my first night and I had a blast with it. My one complaint is that they group the game types into one mode. I really don't like capture the flag but I enjoy demolition and whatever the other one is. Red Faction game night:

Yeah, I'd be interested in this and since I'm one of the first to respond I'm going to suggest Monday nights (anytime) or Tuesday nights (anytime). I don't really attend the other big game nights for 360 so I'm not aware if this would conflict. RF is a little more niche I'd say so I think it'd be safe to overlap.

I believe they just switched up the matchmaking (?) because I played yesterday morning and I was able to just select & play damage control game type. I also saw siege/capflag/etc which I don't remember being in the menu.

RF would be great because it scales really well. Plain ol' deathmatch is a blast with all the randomness of the packs. And even small teams 4v4 would be good for damage control or something silly like siege.

GG everyone: Rei, Bluescrote, KillingJoke, Cantaloupe.

Our favorite seemed to be siege since it really displays the games strengths...blowing up buildings. The only crappy part is that defending can be difficult simply because you need the Reconstructor which can be hard to find on the fly. My favorite was the level with the high bridge low bridge as the final objectives, running across those trying to repair was hectic.

Flak
07-14-2009, 01:54 AM
Yeah siege mode is great, and could be greater with more reconstructors. It can end so quickly for defense if you don't find any. Next time we should do some damage control, I don't get to play enough because hardly anyone plays it. It's mostly the deathmatch playlists along with large mixer and siege that get people playing.

Rei no Otaku

What's the best weapon to upgrade in single player? I don't want to waste my salvage on more remote charges or explosive discs for the grinder. Wanna save up for something good, and right now the rocket launcher is the best weapon I have.

EDIT: Looks like I'm buying the friendly detector for proximity mines. I had a nice trap laid out for a convoy but some civilian triggered it and the convoy. One truck slipped passed and I got perforated for trying to run it down. These convoys are seriously giving me some grief.

You have to do story missions to liberate Dust. Probably have to drop EDF control to 0 too, but that's not hard considering how much there is to do in Dust.

It's not one of the best games I've played in a while simply because I play a lot of different stuff, but it is a really good game. I had never played the Red Faction games due to only having a GameCube when the older ones were released.

I remember having tons of fun in the original multiplayer beta, so I'm looking forward to playing with CAGs!

But on second thought, I may be a little late tomorrow. I'm not sure exactly what time I will be able to get on the Xbox, and I am possibly going to be playing a UFC CAG league fight. That shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes, though.

I have stuff I watch on Mondays as well (wrestling and football) but that's what my DVR is for. Fuck commercials.

Other nights are already occupied by other CAG game nights, except maybe Sunday.

That was fun last night, though, despite myriad connection issues. It was just me, BlueScrote, and KillingJoke earlier on, and then when I got back on later, I played with a good group that I'm familiar with- FrankySox, Kuriyami, ChickenBoyBryan, DarkTower, fleshribbon, and others.

It's really quite sporadic for me when I'm on.. Friday and Saturday nights are usually a no go, I mean.. I don't have DVR but I can sacrifice wrestling on Monday nights, and I hear the MNF schedule is crap this year anyway.. lol

I just need someone to remind me that this is going on, and I'll switch games in no time. So add my GT then and we'll get together in a few games and raise some carnage.

I'm starting to get pretty annoyed with some of the Guerilla missions in the campaign. Apparently the developers idea of making later missions hard is to throw 40 enemies at you. Some of this shit is just downright unwinable. Destroy 30 enemy vehicles with nowhere to hide? Take out these high importance targets that are guarded by 40 EDF soldiers and 20 Marauders? Yeah, that's not fun, just annoying.

I wish Volition would patch in an upgrade you can buy for the assault rifle, for an extra clip or two. Half my enemies carry them I know, but sometimes it'd be just damn swell to have a few extra clips.

If you're having trouble, keep in mind the title of the game, and that it rewards GUERRILLA tactics. Don't stick around and fight if you don't have to - accomplish your goal and get the f out.

After completing the game on casual, I'm on my second playthrough on Normal. It feels like a whole new game - this is definitely a keeper, and I'm not even into multiplayer.

I finished Infamous prior to playing this and there are a lot of things I wish this game had (better checkpointing, all collectibles show up on minimap, etc). Really enjoying the game overall, but if it had some of the things from Infamous it would be over the top great.

Finished the campaign last night. Overall, it is a very fun game and would recommend it. They did an awesome job with the destructible environments.

There were some minor gameplay things from Saints Row 2 that they should have incorporated into this game, but not a big deal. I also thought there were too many weapons considering you only had a choice to carry 3 at a time and it wasn't overly convenient to change. There were some weapons that I never even bought because of this.

That's positively awesome. I had a bunch of extra salvage so mine is now fully upgraded. I tried it on a convoy and I don't know what went wrong but the target was half dead when I got in and the EDF blew me up shortly thereafter because I didn't take a few seconds to disable the guards.

If I play and finish the liberation mission for a zone, can I still go back and complete the guerrilla actions therein?

Flak
07-27-2009, 11:39 PM
From what I've read you can't until you liberate all of Mars. The EDF appear again for no reason and you can do all of the guerrilla actions you missed. The difficulty is ramped up a little too. After you liberate a zone you can still do transporter and demo missions without having to beat the game however.

Radio missions apparently reset along with the reappearance of the EDF but many people are reporting problems with getting them to pop up again, leaving a lot of people with something like 100/104 guerilla actions completed. Hopefully Volition is looking into this.

New Features:

New Wrecking Crew mode - Challenge Mode: There are 3 rounds of distinct submode/weapon/backpack settings per level. Each participant plays through all 3 rounds to try to get the highest score possible. Challenge Mode is the best way to enjoy WC by yourself, and we're also allowing all modes to be played with a single player.
Wrecking Crew Leaderboards: Your scores for Challenge Mode only are automatically uploaded to leaderboards (1 per level) so you can compare how you’re doing against your friends and the world.
Bonus Wrecking Crew levels unlocked: The 4 pre-order bonus WC levels are now unlocked for everyone, giving you 10 levels in which to blow everything away.
Weapon and Backpack disabling in Multiplayer: Prevent any specific backpacks or weapons from spawning in a level within a custom match.
XP multiplier for matchmaking playlists: Double XP playlists are now possible (and will be used).
Ore Deposits on Minimap: Mining ore that hasn’t been mined will now show up as purple pulsing dots on the minimap. This will help players to obtain the “Working the Land” achievement/trophy.
Support for upcoming DLC: Demons of the Badlands (http://community.redfaction.com/content/dlc-announcement-demons-badlands), our first DLC pack, will be released on August 13th.

Other Fixes:

House Arrest icons now reflect their proper completion status after you finish the last mission.
Convoy spawning is now fixed after you finish the last mission. Previously some convoys would be prevented from spawning.
Scale of some icons on the full-screen map and minimap has been fixed.
Parties are no longer allowed to matchmake into Anarchy through the "Any Playlist" selection option.
Ties no longer count as losses on the MP leaderboards.
Various minor matchmaking fixes.

Convoy spawns are getting fixed, aweesome.

Sorry if it's a constant question, but what's the deal with wreckage in the game? I'm only one mission away from beating the game, but I decided I wanted to cruise back to parker and take down some of those giant smoke stacks(since they're one of the few giant pillar-like objects that topple over instead of collapsing straight downward), but all the damage I've caused way back at the beginning is still there, basically meaning that there's nothing left to break. Kinda cool that it stays there like that throughout the game, but I want more stuff to destroy! Any fix for this? Do I have to beat the game?

Still a good game though.

Sorry I didn't try and drag everyone into a game on Monday. I saw bluescrote and flak but they were doing their own thing and I was in the groove w/Prototype. Also my parents randomly came into town and so my day off (today) is toast.

But it's not like we made a separate thread for Red Faction game night. So I don't see it as a big deal if the night doesn't come together.

We've heard a lot of the community asking for a Double XP weekend, but instead of just two days, we're going to give you four! Once the patch goes live on August 6th, all games will be Double XP until Sunday (August 9th) at Midnight PST. No matter which playlist you pick, you can earn a ton of XP and make your way up to the elusive Ostrich Hammer (http://community.redfaction.com/content/developer-diary-new-sledgehammer-0).
Another addition to this patch is a new playlist titled "MLG Playlist". This specific playlist contains rules that were sent to us from MLG and are equivalent to what the 4v4 Ladder Tournament (http://community.redfaction.com/content/mlg-gamebattles-4v4-ladder-tournament-nearly-5000-prizes) will follow, across multiple modes. This is a great way to get in a quick pick-up game with your team without having to setup a custom game. You can find the full playlist settings here (http://gamebattles.com/xbox360/red-faction-guerrilla/ladder/rfg-online-tournament/rules), just scroll down until you see "K. Settings".
As per usual update status, the 360 patch normally goes live around 4AM PST and the PS3 will go live sometime in the afternoon. If it's not up directly at 4 AM for those of you who sit and watch the atomic clock (http://www.time.gov/), just be patient and grab a snack (http://img12.yfrog.com/img12/1483/1mx.jpg) while you wait. There will be plenty of time to experience the new Challenge Mode in Wrecking Crew, go hunting for some elusive Mining Ore, or build up your XP with a few MP games. Remember that our first DLC pack will be releasing next week, so stay tuned for more information on that soon. You can find the rest of the patch notes here (http://community.redfaction.com/content/rfg-official-patch-coming-soon).

I'm gonna try hitting some MP while the double XP is going on this weekend. I only played two games and got my ass HANDED to me on both occasions (1 for 10 and 1 for 13) but I could see it being fun.

Question though, do you eventually get to a point where you elongate the time your backpack runs for? Seems that initially those packs are pretty weak and have a short burst of ability to them.

Let me know if anyone plans on playing.

Flak
08-07-2009, 11:48 PM
The backpacks are always the same. The game wouldn't be nearly as fun if they lasted all the time, but I do wish you could cancel out stuff like the tremor and firepower packs. But then again the fp pack could easily be abused that way. Oh well.

Anyone know a good game mode to find thermobaric rockets? I'm trying to do that 100xp with every weapon challenge and it's the only one I need. Somehow I already have 85xp, so if someone wants to boost it in a quick custom game or something I'd be down for that.
