SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Activision Inc on Friday unveiled a new "Guitar Hero" video game focusing on the rock band Aerosmith, taking the billion-dollar franchise in a new direction.
Called "Guitar Hero: Aerosmith," the new game will arrive in stores this summer, a surprise to many analysts and fans who had expected the next title to come out closer to the year-end holiday shopping season.
Aerosmith, known for hits such as "Dream On" and "Sweet Emotion," is the top-selling American rock band of all time, with sales of 66.5 million albums in the United States alone.
The game will feature about 30 Aerosmith songs as well as others from various acts that have opened for the band. The price has not yet been set.
"The premise is that it's going to cover the 30-plus years of the band, from high school all the way through the rock superstardom of today," Kai Huang, head of Activision's RedOctane unit, which guides development of the franchise, told Reuters in an interview.
When Activision reported quarterly earnings last week, analysts grilled the company on its plans for the franchise, expressing concern that sales would slow this year because many players who bought earlier versions with guitars would opt to buy the lower-price stand-alone game disks.
Huang said Activision had not yet decided whether it would offer a special controller with the Aerosmith game.
NEW DIRECTION
The focus on a single band marks a new twist for the franchise, whose three main titles featured dozens of artists spanning classic rock, grunge, metal, punk and other rock subgenres. Last year, Activision also released "Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s" with songs from that decade.
"It's just a completely new way to interact with this music and with Aerosmith, and we think there's more opportunity to do that in the future," Huang said.
By spotlighting a single band, the company has also come up with a way to counter rival music game "Rock Band" from Viacom Inc unit MTV and Electronic Arts Inc, Activision's top competitor.
To recreate the sense of attending an Aerosmith concert, developers held motion-capture sessions with band members, including energetic frontman Steven Tyler and lead guitarist Joe Perry. "As you play," Huang said, "you're going to be seeing Joe and Steven doing their moves onstage."

anyone else hoping for a bundle with a different guitar design? i wasn't a big fan of the ghiii guitar (it wouldn't rest on my leg well at all). also, buying a bundle would beat buying the game alone plus a separate guitar.

This REALLY should have been a Rock Band release. I mean, really. If they are going to give any BAND a game.. why should you only play as a guitar?? This makes me mad.
It also makes me mad that it'll probably be $60. This is $30 at best. Seriously. I AM interested, as I do like Aerosmith, but not for anywhere near the $60 range.

The best thing you can do is vote with your wallet, hombre. No GH game is cheap yet (hell, even the GH/GHII PS2 double disc set is $60 new!) - but if you can hold out for a few months, this one will drop like a...lead zeppelin, I suppose is the proper thing to say.

I wonder if the GH:A guitar will be compatible with Rock Band.
I think that was a mis-print on their end. There is no way they would develop a game that would work with peripherals that they don't manufacture. The last I knew they were both still pointing fingers at each other over the whole Guitar Compatible thing. Don't get me wrong, I would love it and it would easily justify a purchase of the game then. Maybe they have put their differences aside. No one wants to manufacture expensive peripherals so hopefully they can come up a solution. The money is being made on the software end of these games and DLC. There was speculation that Rock Band might even be selling at a LOSS in the beginning.

Of all the bands out there, why Aerosmith? Are they even relevant anymore? I've never really listened to their music, so are all their songs filled with great guitar riffs or what?
Where is Guitar Hero: Coldplay or maybe The Smiths? ;)
I wonder if they're gonna milk this series dry with all sorts of crazy spinoffs and such. Well, it works for DDR so why not eh?
I'd love to see one where you can import your own songs and make a chart for them, in a legit way. ;)

Once more...
Casual gamer fans will be attracted to this. Plus in 80's Edition I don't think anyone was eager to play Oingo Boingo, Flock of Seagulls amongst others and that was one of Activision's best sellers this past year. Name brand alone it'll sell. Plus basically all consoles so I think they'll do just fine.
Though yeah, easily agree this should've been Rock Band DLC. Walk this way would've been stupid fun, no matter which version they choose.

Yeah, but let's be honest, it wasn't worth $50 like majority of people bought it for. Yet still sold damn well, so I can't help but see GH: Aerosmith doing just as well. Also I'll admit I was giddy as shit while playing metal health, ambulance and holy diver, but my feelings toward the game are more on par with saying not as high a point in the series as the other games.

If the game does do something a story mode based on their career, I imagine it can be pretty awesome (especially co-op). Like something with beginning the game in a crappy club where your guitar would work time in and time out. That or when you become successful you have to play as Joe Perry and play through a song high off your mind on pills and coke and don't bomb the set. Something like that, though I know I'm hoping for too much...

SH Thread (http://www.scorehero.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=56169) with supposed info from Game Informer:
Venues:
Nipmuc Regional High School in Massachusetts (the first gig Aerosmith has played)
Max's Kansas City (the place Aerosmith got their first record contract)
Orpheum Theater in Boston (semi-confirmed)
"The Big Game" (based off the 2001 Super Bowl) (semi-confirmed)
Songs:
Sweet Emotion
Kings and Queens
Movin' Out
Make It
Draw the Line
Uncle Salty
No Surprize
Dream On (though this has been kind of confirmed from the start)
Other Groups that careers intersected with Aerosmith, these songs will be performed by the normal Guitar Hero characters.
Mott the Hoople (All the Young Dudes)
The Kinks (All Day and All of the Night)
Joan Jett (I Hate Myself for Loving You)
Cheap Trick (Dream Police)
Each set is 2 'opening band songs', then 2 aerosmith songs and an encore. So 2 non-aerosmith for every 3 aerosmith.
Boss battles are back, but have been tweaked due to feedback.
There are 5 performers on stage for aerosmith and opening bands, so all new camera angles, etc. They had to work on collision detection due to tyler and perry and how they perform with each other. Also, old GH characters will be back for the opening songs.
They all did mo-cap, but Tyler spent almost a month on mo-cap, doing all of every song till he got it perfect, and mo-capped his full body as well as his face alone.
The game is meant to be a tour through their catalogue, so it will most likely be chronological. Also, venues are designed after some of their most memorale venues, with backdrops inspired by covers. Opening venue is the high school where they first played. Also a redo of the 2001 Super Bowl halftime show and the Orpheum.
The band re-recorded tracks when the original multi-track was lost, ie "Movin Out" and "Make It".
They also tried to tie in a VH1 Behind-the-Music type feel to the whole journey.
They tried to have all different tempos throughout.

If this game bombs, it will be, in part, due to the poor marketing strategy. I would have tried to keep On Tour under wraps until Aerosmith was out there.

Something tells me they advertised GH: World Tour or GH4 or whatever the name is early just to try and stop any more momentum Rock Band is building. Since I don't think everyone wants a room full of plastic instruments. So tough sell for GH: Aerosmith, though I still think it'll be a hit, just it'll make no where near the amount of cash 80's Edition expansion wise.

I would like this game more if it was Genre specific (say "guitar hero: Punk" or "guitar hero: Classic Rock") but lets be honest. Aerosmith was the biggest "pop rock "of the 70s-80s.. id pay 60 if i was anywhere intersted in the band it was featuring..
here are 5 "older" bands that I would get guitar hero for
Rush
Yes
Kansas
Bad Religion

Rolling Stones
KISS

Metallica

There are very few bands this format would work for unless they put out concept albums. Do The Who's Tommy and toss in a few tiers of hits as an encore. Same for Queensryche and Operation Mindcrime. Toss in their other big hits to the full album and it could work.

A Pearl Jam game would be the shit.
I didn't want to bump an old thread, so I figured I'd just toss this in here.
I just got the GH3 bundle I ordered from Amazon and was a little perturbed that the strum bar didn't make a noise when I hit it down as I was messing aroudn with it after opening. Up makes the normal click noise, no problem. So, I was worried... and then I used it to play a bit. Works perfectly (and silently :applause: ).
So... I guess my question is, does this sound like a guitar that's going to break in a month, or did I just happen to get the best guitar ever?
Thanks!

The Guitar Hero franchise is big enough that this will sell copies even though this is the exact same game as Guitar Hero III with fancier graphics and an Aerosmith flavor added. I say if they have enough pre-orders why not?
It mainly got me because they didn't even do one for Brawl. Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but I'm getting the sense that even people who *are* fans of GH/RB aren't even excited about this one.

My skill level: I lose alot online in pro face off expert. Ive 5 starred all songs on HARD. Ive 5 starred almost all songs on expert (main setlist) except like 5. I have no FC's except in medium and easy.
Guitar Hero Aerosmith is too fucking easy. I am glad i rented it because the first song i played i got like 5 achievments. This game is way too easy. Ive beaten it and every song on expert with 5 stars except like 4. My suggestion to anyone even near my skill level is to rent it. A guy I know from the UK finished 1000/1000 in less than 24 hours (it released on Friday in the UK). He is a pretty good player and said it was not hard. It took him 7 playthroughs  of the campaign to get enough money to buy everything and get all achievements. From what he told me the only notable improvements are: achievements stack for lower difficulty levels and online co-op career. Those are decent improvements but not enough to base a game around unless the music is kick ass.
It will still be fun to play the Run DMC songs, but if I wasn't getting this for free from Free360games, there is no way I would be picking this up for full price at launch.

I bought it yesterday and got through 17 of 31 songs on hard. I love the fake guitar games, but have limited experience on hard. I can 5 star any song on medium in my sleep, but could never make the jump to hard. I would usually give up after 6 or 7 songs because I'd get stuck on one. I'm on a song now that does a lot of quick scales from orange to green and back and I can not do those. My brain doesn't think fast enough or something. I'm going to try to practice the parts at a slower speed.
I felt that I really needed to make the move to hard. I wasn't enjoying the fake guitar games anymore because there was zero challenge on medium, but too much on hard. I had fun with the game yesterday and will plug away tonight.
The only song I failed yesterday, besides song 18, was Sweet Emotion. I failed that dumb song like 7 times. I practiced the difficult parts a few times and finally got it. I also saved the star power for the hard part to get me through. I've only 5 starred a handful of songs. I really don't know how people play this game on expert. I'm 34 years old. Anyone my age able to play the game on expert? I'd like to think it is my age. :)

Wow, def. a rental. Rented it today, already flew through the set list (a little under 4 hours). I have most of the achievements (nearly all of the non-online and non-coop ones.) 5 starred, on expert, nearly the entire set sight reading. A couple songs screwed me up and I got a 4 star, and I only 3 starred the final song.
A couple songs are at least fun to play (the ones near the end that is, the openers are boring as hell). 3 bucks rental = good times. 60-80 dollar purchase? That's harder to swallow. Now to hawk my free bundle that also came in the mail today...

Quick question about rentals. I went to go rent it at Blockbuster but they didn't have it out for rent. Same with Hollywood.
Are you guys renting it somewhere else or am I missing something.
Got mine at Family Video, if that helps.

Yea I was hoping this game was like that sine I couldn't make the switch to hard either in GH3. I've starred the first couple of songs but I'm also not good when the orange fret is added. It's ok but they add chords and it goes faster too. I forgot where I heard it but they said this or WT will have a better ease from medium to hard. I'll prob pick this up when I get my next paycheck. I'm 24 btw and love Aerosmith.

I guess I must be too used to the Rock Meter in RB.....why does the meter in this game fall so fast when you miss notes but take so long to fill back up? And star power hardly does anything for your meter it seems. I haven't played GH3 much in a long time, is it the same? Or is something they changed in order to ratchet up the difficulty without being accused of 'overcharting' again.
I like the way the RB meter works far more. I am having fun with this game though.

Actually I just tried the wireless Rock Band Strat in GHA and it worked perfectly. Did it not work for you?
I actually did a lot better than with the LP...the buttons on the Strat are much more fluid for me.
Anyway, I imagine if the wireless Strat works the wired one probably does too.

Nah, you have to play all the encores anyway to complete career, turning down one doesn't disqualify you from the achievement.

My GH: Aerosmith bundle arrived last night and I have been pleasantly surprised so far. While they have definitely toned down the difficulty, I have to say I like the decision (then again I never could quite get by Hard in GHIII - only 2 songs left though). ;) While the setlist is somewhat limited, I have already had a couple of "wow forgot they played that song" and "I haven't heard this one in a while" moments and I'm about half way through the setlist. Not bad so far. I think I'm just a glutton for these types of games. Give me a plastic guitar and some new songs and I'm good to go! :bouncy:
Also, this is probably a good time to mention to all the CAGs that are playing this that we have a CAG Guitar Hero Group on the Guitar Hero community site. You can join up by creating an account there and joining our group here:
http://community.guitarhero.com/tour_groups/207319
You can link up your GamerTag and account via the xbox live menu in-game. Get the code there and enter it onto the website. Also if you haven't linked your GHIII game up you can do that as well.
We used to be in the top 25 overall, but have dropped a bit due to loss of interest in the game, but with GH:A out it is probably a good time to get back into the game!
Drop me a PM or post here if you have any questions!

One thing I really like about this game is there are no songs I hate. I didn't realize how much of a difference that makes. I'm not the biggest Aerosmith fan in the world, in fact I have hardly listened to them at all since their 70s stuff when I was a kid, but at least nothing flat out sucks. Can't say that about GH3 or even RB.
Even the Aerosmith songs I thought I didn't like (Elevator and Rag Doll) are better than I remembered.
Does anyone else notice wackiness with the Rock Meter?

So does the Wireless (or wired) Stratacaster work with GH:A?
So, essentially, it turned out to be what I always assumed it'd be: the next-gen Rocks the 80s.
The difficulty *is* noticeably lower... a sign of things to come for GH4:WT, perhaps?
Corvin

The more I play it the more I dislike the inclusion of non-Aerosmith tunes. It pulls me out of the game every time. Especially since your band changes back and forth from generic GH characters to Aerosmith. They should have had Aerosmith cover the other tunes in the game. Could have been more interesting.

The difficulty is lower if you don't have to struggle --- the actual charts are easier.
IMO if you have to struggle a bit it can be harder due to the way the Rock Meter works now,
but unfortunately thats a frustrating kind of harder...i'd rather have harder note charts than that.

I rented this and got through by the end of the rental, getting 260 cheesements. I seriously only played a total of 3 hours.

It's not too bad. I'm on the last song on Expert. I've gotten about 86% through it, so 1 or 2 more shots and I should be through it. My favorite song to play so far is "Back in the Saddle".
If I wouldn't have gotten it through yourfree360games.com, I don't think that I would have picked it up. I got it mainly for the guitar, but I decided to give it a whirl and it's not that bad. A few songs that I could live without, but all of the GH's and even Rock Band had a few that I didn't care for.
I really wish that they would've left out the boss battle with Joe Perry though. I strongly disliked the boss battles in GH3 and I'm sad to see them carrying on. It just kills the game for me. I'd rather just play the songs than battle with power ups.

I think the best way to get this game is if you get a deal like at Gamestop where you can get bonus on a trade in or something. I ended up getting a bonus on trade in + my employee discount.
Can you get that Score Hero achievement on Hard or does it have to be on expert?
Corvin
07-07-2008, 01:08 PM
Score Hero is one I haven't gotten yet. I haven't really tried though. I'm at 730pts and the big ones left to get are Score Hero, finish Expert, buy guitars and play co-op lead & bass.
I really like the game. I love the song selection and am glad they left off the sappy shit from the 90s (Angel, Amazing, Crazy, Cryin). People playing online are bitches though only playing for achievements instead of playing the way the game was intended. Online achievements blow... across the board.

I am new to guitar hero games. I also suck really bad at them. I can barely pass most songs on medium. My friend passed all the songs on hard the first time he ever played this game. I have a exploder guitar, and I'm left handed. The way it is made it is annoying to use left handed so I play right handed. I really like guitar hero aerosmith, but I like guitar hero 3 better so far.
