View Full Version : What must I play if I've missed well, everything.

I've never been a huge PC gamer. I have a few games I still play on my laptop, such as Star Craft and Theme Hospital, but for the most part, expensive hardware has kept me away. This year in anticipation of Starcraft 2 though, I plan to upgrade. My question is, for someone whose missed out on most PC gaming post Starcraft/Diablo, what games hold up well? what is a must play once I have a capable gaming PC? I've picked up the Civ games and Jedi Knight titles in anticipation, but what else is still a must-play at this point, and stands the test of time.
Oh, no WoW please. Nothing against it, but my finance knows my obsessive tendencies, so I'm not allowed near it.

Even without her I wouldn't play it, as I know it would cut way too much into all the other activities I enjoy.

You wouldn't have to worry about other activities though .. because they would all seem worthless compared to WoW ;)
Unreal Tournament 3 is good if you like fast paced FPS though.

Starcraft 2 is still a ways off. If you can wait till closer to the release date, you can probably save a good deal of money on that computer upgrade.
Are we even expecting it to hit in 2008?

If I had to guess I would say 11/2008 for a holiday release or 6/2009 for a summer release. Blizzard used to be very fond of releasing games around the June time period.

FarCry is pretty good... and I'd definitely pick up the Orange Box if you haven't played it on consoles already.

Either way, I'd like to try and pick the titles I missed up on the cheap in the meantime. I won't upgrade till closer to its release, but it's not as if adding them to the old backlog can hurt right?

The Battlefield 1942 Collection is $10 at Best Buy. There's still at least 15 - 20 good servers at any given time. BF42 is one of the most ridiculously fun vehicle-based shooters ever created, plus it doesn't rape your system performance like BF2 or BF2142. One awesome server has the Midway map running 24/7, allowing you to duke it out on land, air, and sea.
If you dig classic RTS gaming, I kinda suggest The Command&Conquer First Decade Collection. My only reservation is that like most EA cash cows, it's full of bugs and requires several unofficial patches to work correctly, but even then some multiplayer features are broke. Oh ya, it doesn't play nice with Vista. BUT if you can get around these flaws, it's a great value.
Call of Duty 1 and 2 are fantastic and can be bought for >$10 if you shop around.

Well, I have a 360 I play a lot of Live! shooters on, and I've grown somewhat tired of the genre. I still plan to get the Orange Box on PC, because it seems like that's where it's at for TF2. I loves me some RPGs and Strategy games. Anything with a good engrossing story can usually keep me hooked, or with any kind of character growth and the like (Diablo 2 comes to mind as eating up a ton of my life).
Not huge on racing or sports titles, but otherwise my tastes are pretty diverse.

Amen, I just don't think I'll ever have more fun in online gaming than I do cruising around in a virtual Panzer. 6 years old and I still love that game to death.

Start with Half Life 1. Then play the expansions opposing force, and blue shift. Then download Counter stike and more importantly Day of defeat. Be forewarned, after you play these games ive listed here, No other games will be good enough. ever again.

NWN is a great sleep aid; nothing else sends me to dreamland in 3 minutes flat.
