View Full Version : The 15 Most Annoying Video Game Characters
This has already been around the net but Cracked made a list of The 15 Most Annoying Video Game Characters (http://www.cracked.com/article_15902_15-most-annoying-video-game-characters-from-otherwise-great-games.html). I thought it was missing a few characters like Rizzo from SimPark and the purple squares from Geometry Wars but its overall pretty funny.

Mr. Resstti made the list. Damn is he annoying. Surprised more whinny J-RPG lead characters didn't make the list.

Natalya used to annoy me too. I would put on the big head code along with throwing knives and just go crazy on her as the game chugged along.

I don't agree with #12 and #9. How can you get annoyed by looking up Ashley's skirt?!? Pat Summerall should've been on there and not Madden.

I'm probably in the minority, but I never found Navi annoying. I was too busy having the synaptic reactions of the world's happiest retard while playing Ocarina of Time. Still she manages to make all of these types of lists. #1 was also entirely predictable though well written. Good list overall.

I'm probably in the minority, but I never found Navi annoying.
You've never been on your merry way, doing a quest, getting ready to kick some kind of ass, and here comes Navi, managing to somehow stop EVERYTHING to talk to you about shit you already knew, and the second she finishes, you fall right into the trap or monster attack because she threw you off?
Or the HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY! Every time you go in or out of an area while doing a sidequest because she wants you to rush through the main story?

Not really, no. I haven't played since the 64 days, but I recall having to hit a button to talk to her. Not sure how she would interrupt battle then unless you fat fingered it. I also remember her saying "Hey!" and "Listen!" but not to the extent that it was hair pulling. If she started going nuts, I'd just open up the dialog box and skip thru it. I'm sure if I played it again now, it would be maddening since I'd be hyper aware of her antics. I'm also probably pickier, more impatient, and more cynical now then I was then - when good games like that transcended everything.

I'm playing through Rogue Galaxy right now, and Jupis Tooki went straight to the top of my list the first time I saw him. While you're walking around, most of the characters have random, but positive things to say. But not Jupis - when he's not criticizing your leadership abilities, he's either complaining about how much you made him walk or how dangerous the monsters are.

I will never understand the hatred of Navi. I think a lot of the people that hate her so much should go back and play Ocarina. She speaks up, like... once every a half hour, and you don't even have to talk to her. She generally says "HEY!" when you lock on, but that's quieter than the fucking lock-on sound effect. She was annoying during her wall-climbing tutorial, but that took about one minute and occurred within the first half hour of the game.
Tails has been annoying ever since he learned to talk. He was awesome before that.
My most annoying character is probably Kreia from KotOR 2. Shut the fuck up before I kick you off my fucking ship, alright Ms. Rand?
Also, Sectoids from X-Com. Physically weak, but they get very dangerous later on in the game. Mind control is a real bitch.

I'm pissed just thinking about it...As much as I loved that game, it was a mountain of unfairness. By far the worst bit for me was my first city mission on my last run-through. I skipped laser weapons and was teching to plasma when it first occurred, but did not yet have them. Unfortunately, there were three fucking Cyberdisks (plus a couple of non-mind-controlling Sectoids) waiting right outside my ramp. You ever try to take out a Cyberdisk with bullets? It's, like... three full turns of plugging away at those fuckers with everything you have. And they don't take much damage from explosives, either, so grenades and rocket launchers don't help. I remember being stuck hiding behind the landing gear absolutely bleeding troops. Can't recall what I did to get out of that. Might have just ran my ass off.

Hey Crotch, do you remember the first time you fought those Crystalline guys (or whatever they were called) who could "infect" your soldiers with a standard fucking melee attack? Then after a few turns your guy would split open like a banana to reveal another freshly replicated Crystal dude. That was one moment where I wanted to kick the designer in the balls. Every encounter after that, I would just rocket their brains out from 400 yards away.
Oh and did you ever try to learn psi-ops so you could mind control (to get some much deserved revenge)? I did...and IT NEVER fuckING WORKED!
You know what though? -Still one of the greatest games ever.

I lost quite a few guys to them the first time I fought 'em, and have killed them first thing ever since. It's really a shame that killing one of them in "walking flesh-suit" form doesn't fully kill them - they still pop out fully formed. I don't think they can do much damage to Heavy Weapons Platforms, though, so I guess that's the counter.
Oh and did you ever try to learn psi-ops so you could mind control (to get some much deserved revenge)? I did...and IT NEVER fuckING WORKED!It worked perfectly fine for me. I think your soldiers are defective. Did you check the stats of the soldiers you trained? 'Cause it won't work if you do it on soldiers that aren't good enough. Also, it only works on sufficiently scared/demoralized enemies.

Yeah, that scared/demoralized part might have been the problem. I only used people who had high stats in whatever categories were important (it's been a long time since I last played so my memory is quite foggy), but I never "leveled up" their psi skills that much - mainly due to the fact that you get them so near the end of the game. Plus by that time I usually have the uber tank and like five guys with tracking rocket cannons, so I'm never really hurting for firepower. The endgame is almost a joke with how overpowered you get...
Good times, good times. I think I may even fire it up over the weekend after all this talk... Go for my third or fourth completion.
Also, Darknessbear - we are talking about the highly-rated, cult-worshipped game X-COM for PC, not Psi-Ops. Just for your clarification.

A minor nit pick, but definitely annoying IMO.

Even if you have borderline unstoppable weapons/armour/stats, taking control of enemy troops is still way more fun. Having said that...
... my favourite thing in the game involved those waypoint-guided rocket launchers and alien bases. The last bit of the base missions would always involve taking the "command center" - a two story rectangular room with a sort of levitation-dealy to get between floors. One guy opens the door, another fires the rocket into the "lift" then sends it off in a random direction. The rocket hits a wall and sets off a chain reaction, killing the defenders.

The most annoying character BY FAR is the peach/orange vehicle in RC Pro Am for the NES. I can't remember which levels, but there are some when that damn car goes into warp speed and there is little you can do about it unless you hit it with a missle before it gets out of sight.

Those waypoint rockets are way too fun.
When scavenging a downed UFO, I always liked launching a waypoint rocket first turn from inside the dropship to punch a hole in the very top of the saucer. Then I'd follow up by dropping in three or four jetpack elites to plasma the shit out of the surprised and usually totally confused aliens. You know those little bastards weren't expecting that...

Personally, I found Aerith (Aeris) Gainsborough from the FFVII Series to be quite annoying.
First off, before I even knew she died, I thought it was very annoying that I had spent so much time upgrading her to a higher level than most of my other characters just to see her die without a fight.
Plus she always had that strange/annoying dialogue that led up to something extremely lame about her (who cares if she's a descendant of an ancient, get on with the story!) , apart from the fact that she always wanted to get cloud's attention when she obviously couldn't see that he was too busy staring at Tifa's chest.
Then she shows up again in Advent Children just to bug cloud even more! He's effin married to Tifa! If I was him I would even care anymore!
Then just so square could tease us even more; She shows up in Kingdom hearts to play a minor annoying role then show up in the credits facing cloud. Either reincarnate (for some reason) or stay dead!

Clever: I loved flying in through the top of the ships.
I just played a few rounds of the game, picking up from where I'd saved last. Not very far in, apparently - the only plasma weapons I had were rifles. Had great success kicking a squad of Snakemen out of a park in Hong Kong with an all-rookie, plasma-pistol-wielding (I'd researched it by that time) squad of six from my recently established base in India. I only lost one guy in that fight, which is a huge accomplishment given how pitifully little cover I had.
Led: I liked Aeris/Aerith, but bringing her back for Advent Children was seriously fucking weak. They considered allowing you to revive her during the game, but backed away from that. And for good fucking reason - her death was an important and dramatic moment. Reviving her would have diluted that and weakened the game.
So they went and revived her for the movie. Fucking tools.
Oh, yeah.Aeris died. Then came back.Sorta.

Pussy.
Clever: Been playing a lot of X-Com lately. Just did a terror mission with Snakemen. Got to test out my new Heavy Plasma guns... on ten fucking Chrysalids. At one point, a stun bomb knocked out three of my guys, and the enemy followed this with a charge of 5 Chrysalids. I lost two guys (making it a total of twelve Chrysalids) to that charge.
Fucking madness. That's what I get for not packing any grenades. And for having my rocket launcher person knocked out by a stun bomb. And for fighting at night.
Well, mostly the night thing.

X-Com troops are pure shit to start with. Inaccurate, unarmoured, and poorly armed. I suggest deploying some HWPs to act as scouts for you and to keep your casualties down.
I just got flying armour, and am working on improved ships at the moment. The only problem? I just ran into the fucking Ethereals. That means I've hit mind control territory. Lost a medic the other day to that bullshit - thank God he was only carrying a small launcher, or he could have taken out some of my non-MCed guys. I tried using a small launcher on him, hoping that the MC would wear off back at the base, but it didn't work - he was gone.
