it's not an official CAG team, but it's partially made of CAGs...

I'm also hoping to have a PS3 or a Wii game sometime next year due to the great resources available to devs now.

So, I'll be housesitting this weekend, they have a PS2.
Cool.
So I'm bringing Yakuza, Rogue Galaxy, Valkyrie Profile Lenneth, Tales of The Abyss and Shining Force Neo. Of course, they're just coming so I can make my decision there (probably Yakuza).
I'll also be playing through PROFESSOR LAYTON, cuz its awesome.
And finishing the last volume of Boys Over Flowers, 6 volumes of Fighting Spirit (hopefully to finish it) and writing reviews.
It's going to be fun.

I just scored a practically new Wavebird for $14.59. So I decided to pop Super Smash Bros. Melee into my Wii. I actually had fun! I am not a huge fan of the games, so I am pleased that I enjoyed my time with the game. I am probably going to be playing that to get in shape for some friendly games on Brawl online. I am stoked that I got a Wavebird for so damn cheap.

KaneRobot and I might go to the midnight here in MI. My other friend said he would go. But he is a douche and likes to make plans with other people after we make plans. He also swears Melee is said meh-lee and the Rio Digenaro(sp?) is in France. So he might be a total ass like always and go get trashed that night instead. If him and Kane don't go, I can wait till morning. I am not in that big of a rush to get SSBB.

Ulala is the reason I might get it (among some of the other Sega characters) :-P

I put in some good effort trying to unlock her in Sonic Riders, but eventually got lazy.

Pick an underdog team like the Reds - it'll make you feel like you're accomplishing something.

Or just enjoy the demo and don't spend $60 on the regular game.

I dove back into Saint's Row tonight; couldn't pick up where I left off (my last game save was from 11/06!), so I started over. I forgot that the narrative is actually pretty good when it isn't force feeding you how "tough" and "street" it is.

I played some Burnout Paradise with some CAG members, worked out pretty well but I'm tired and about ready to head to bed. I just hope I make CoD4 nights successful so I'll have three game nights that worked out well (of three different games). Hope to fill other nights of the week with games.

Speaking of programming, I absolutely love it and it's one of my biggest passions. Whenever I'm given a C++, C, etc. program to write, I get all excited and I'll do it. I'd constantly help my friends (online and offline) with assignments relating to programming. I could just code all day. Shockingly, that's not my major (I do some coding). I wish, but don't want to spend ANOTHER 3 years in college when I'm already quite old (I'm 25).

I was kinda digging MLB 08 The Show as well. But like I mentioned last thread, it seems to be missing something. Anyways, yeah it ain't worth $60. I gave up on sports games awhile ago because I got tired of paying for the same game with x feature added every goddamn year.

And we're at GGT33 and all we could dig up was that fossil Godzilla? Was Ultraman booked or something? F'n ay.

Yeah same here man, some really nice games on that list. I'm wondering do you guys know if the Wii version of Okami is going to have anything that the PS2 version didn't have? Considering picking it up when it comes out for the Wii, but if there isn't anything different from the PS2 version, I'll probably just keep it for the PS2.

I think I'm NAT Type 2, but I'll give it a try. I could hear you guys, I just couldn't understand you.It might have been my end too (sometimes my PS3 chooses a different IP which Type 2 NAT isn't set to) and might have done so before the match.

I'll try to have a Burnout night each week or so. I'm willing to play most any time, as long as I'm not in a Warhawk night, CoD4 night, or my status says away.

I'm a writer if that comes in handy for this gaming dev team getting together. There's still writing in video games right? I'm sure Mario Kart Wii will have an epic narrative.

Played some more PGR4 last night and I'm getting towards the end of the line with my interest in it. There's just no hook to it I guess. It's really well done, very good looking game, tons of features, but there's no central incentive for me to really progress. Simply becoming #1 in single player isn't a huge motivator.

Simply becoming #1 in single player isn't a huge motivator.Actually, the same thing happened to me to. Let me just say I've been a big fan of the series since MSR, and I completed PGR2 and PGR3. For some reason, when I got to a particular point in PGR4, I lost all interests to play it. Yeah the graphics are awesome and the game plays great, but it does lack the hook the others had. That's kind of why I kind of hope there isn't another PGR (unless things get re-done a little).

Besides what everyone has mentioned, you won't unlock hard mode, which has some of the cooler enemies in the game (cat chicks ftw.)

I believe everything is the same as normal mode, but you can't get Master Ninja ranks at the end of missions and no unlockables. You can play to the end. It doesn't cut you off and say "thanks for playing try normal mode lol" or anything like that.

A making of DVD and a paper sleeve that's too small for the DVD and game, thus getting damaged/bent out of shape easily. Pretty weak collector's edition.

Thanks for the snow day today! I finished off Disaster Report (PS2). I thought the game was pretty fun. It was a lot different from the norm and the concept was a good one. If only the game mechanics were a little more polished it would have scored pretty high. It kind of felt like an old PC adventure game throughout. Well woohoo for me...one less backlog game. On to something else!

All right, I went to GS today and got Lost Odyssey. Due to the trade-in promo if I buy LO, I got a 20% bump in credit.

Here's what I ditched:
Ape Escape: On The Loose (PSP)
Baten Kaitos Origins (GC), only played twice
beatmania (PS2)
Bombmerman (PSP)
Dead or Alive 3 (Xbox)
Legaia 2: The Duel Saga (PS2)
Lufia: The Ruins of Lore (GBA)
Mad Dash Racing (Xbox)
Musashi: Samurai Legend (PS2)
Robot Alchemic Drive (PS2)
Samurai Warriors (PS2)
Sega Genesis Collection (PSP)
Sonic Heroes (GC)
Technic Beat (PS2)

I traded in these 14 games, and got $46.15 after bonuses. I meant to trade in 15, but after what GS told me I would get for Metal Slug Anthology (a kind of hard to find game on PSP), I said forget it and will probably sell to someone (since I know people wanted it). One of the games, I got $0.50 for. The most I got for a game was $7. Oh well, that clears out my backlog a bit. :) Also, I got $25 credit the other day for trading in one PS3 and one 360 game in, so I did not pay anything.

Btw Sean, I played on Ninja Dog mode. ;)

I really liked Fighting Spirit. Watched the whole thing, and the TV movie.

Played some Apollo Justice. I'm in the middle of the second case. I was nervous at first since we were getting a whole new cast, but so far the game is really good. Phoenix is awesome in this one. I saw this hentai once about a guy who groped women on a train. Anyway, that guy met this older man who taught him all the secrets about how to master groping and raping women on a crowded train. Phoenix in this game reminds me of that older guy...

Also played a hell of a lot of DW6. So good... Though they made Yi Ling suck. The stone maze is even more annoying than ever.

Sigma is so polished. Playing it on Ninja Dog is kind of a different game. Can I max out every healing item? The answer is yes. Just beat that crazy fiend that eats Rachel. How does she even stand? Is there some sort of incredibly strong back brace in that dominatrix get-up she's got on?

I've not been paying attention. Is 2's graphical level about on par with Sigma's (with more complicated geometry)? I know you can be more dismemberment-happy in 2. Fantastic!

I picked up two volumes of Penny Arcade's collection at Half-Price books. It's pretty fun to go back through the history of games. They're not always funny, but when they hit on something it usually gets me laughing out loud. The commentary to put jokes about then-current Dreamcast games is fun too.

I decided I will buy a new PS3 HDD within 2 weeks. Although I can get a pretty good deal on a 160GB for $76, I'm going with 250GB regardless. Once I put everything I want on the HDD, I should have at least 170GB available.

In the USB mode on the PSP under settings, neither the PS3 nor the PC store see it as anything. It shows up as just like a generic USB device in the XMB.

I don't think you can use the CFW PSP with the PS3. It is one of the reasons why I want a slim PSP. I could have my fat PSP for homebrew and SNES on the go and the slim for regular PSPing needs. Kind of a waste though.

of course it had a job system. Well, I just had a small scare with my PS3, but things seem to be okay. What happened was I tried to download the patch for High Velocity Bowling but could not (console kept resetting). That usually happens when I don't have at least 2.8GB of free space. I ended up freeing space and downloaded again. Finally it worked, but then I went back to download more games. I decided to try a PS3 game, and no disc was being detected and could not eject it. So I just canceled all downloads (removed them), reset my PS3, and everything seemed to be fine. That's the first really weird issue I had with my PS3 (since occasional HDMI not handshaking with the TV, although part of that was my old TV) since one day nothing from my HDD could be read (so I restarted).

Dr Mario Kart

Then go with first hand accounts (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=224474). They largely line up the averages of all the media reviews anyway. In both cases, you still have to know HOW to read them and which ones to read.

How someone who doesnt generally like a genre goes about picking apart reviews is going to be dramatically different when they are largely
a) written BY fans of the genre
b) written FOR fans of the genre

Ok GGT, I need some advice.

I got a Wii waiting for me at work. Someone traded it in, and it's mint. And I can use my employee discount on it, so I'd be getting it for a good price. The thing is I only really want it for No More Heroes, and the upcoming Tales of Symphonia sequel. I don't like Nintendo games, so I wouldn't be getting any games like Smash or Mario Kart. Well there are a bunch of great games out on the VC, Rei. And some of the WiiWare offerings are looking good, especially the Crystal Chronicles game. Also, don't forget about the Skies of Arcadia sequel in the works.

But who knows when some of these games will start coming out. I haven't gotten a Wii yet myself either, but I'm decided to wait until later this year when more quality titles and some more RPGs will start hitting. My advice to you would be to wait, especially if you're just interested in only 1 game that is out now. I'm hoping to hear something about the media storage problem within the next couple of months. Something tells me that Nintendo is gonna announce something no later than E3, especially now since they have said that DLC is on the way.

There's a difference between something being "not for you", Something being "actually crappy" and "you not having taste"

Dynasty Warriors and Mario Kart both fall under that last category.

As for intelligent discussion-

Why do games still have death mechanics in them? Every game should at least have the option to play through it without worrying about dying and having to redo sections. Death is an antiquated notion that stems from the coin-op arcade design that was meant to get your quarters. Now that we pay up front for games most often, shouldn't we be allowed to play them as we wish, without being penalized in such artificial ways?

Alternatives to "dying" in games-
Ninja Dog Mode Humiliate the player/reduce the experience as penalty for lack of skill
Reward- Focus only on rewards for skilled players that normal or poorly skilled players cannot unlock
Branching Story- Write your stories in such a way that failure does not necessarily end the game, but provides a less interesting or shorter experience.

Fable 2 used to have a fairly badass penalty for failure. Either spend XP to arise quickly, or wait and become permanetly disfigured from battle in some way. Unfortunately people were too whiny about it, and Fable 2 now uses the same old shit as every other game.

Some people had problems with the Bioshock Vita Chambers, but some people also rated it game of the year. Prey had one way of doing it, and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time did it best, I think. We've also got a whole genre where people are regularly killed in battle and revived with items, as long as everyone's not dead. Who's to say your airship or "not in battle friend" couldn't throw one of those items into play?

It's all about how you write your scenario and work the mechanics.

now that you've pointed it out, I'll bite.

I can't think of a game that has come out recently that completely kills your progress for dying. As in, setting you right back to the beginning, taking away all progress (aside from shmups.) It's a non-issue these days.

I don't think death is an antiquated notion, except in the sense I just mentioned. There should be an incentive to get better at the game and death fills that role, no?

The solutions you provided aren't alternatives to dying in games. Ninja Dog is unlocked after dying in the game several times. it's a "negative reward." DMC does the same thing-- you still die, but enemies get handicapped after so many continues. A branching story that stiffs you on the full experience is an even harsher penalty than having to replay certain parts.

It seems like you're talking about results coming from dying in a game other than simply replaying the part...but I'm not sure what you're criticizing exactly.

jer7583
02-24-2008, 12:30 AM
Well, the Sands of Time did it well, but they still made you replay areas of the game... wasn't that more of your complaint?

I don't think it would be considered replaying if you failed that particular section. Missing a wall run and falling into a pit of spikes, then doing the wall run again is different than dying and going back to the last save point or checkpoint 3 rooms back. Allowing you to retry the specific task you failed is probably the real goal of this rearrangement of failure mechanisms.

I think everyone remembers your essay on why JRPG's suck. I'm not surprised you're playing LO though.

The save mechanic is often integrated into the game itself. For instance, in a classical survival horror game, Resident Evil for example, theres a tension that is created by not only having to find a type-writer to save, but also having the ink ribbons on you necessary to save.

Theres nothing artificial about it, its part of the game. Not all games have to use the same mechanics nor SHOULD they.

Why should I fear the challenge of any situation if I can immediately try it when I lose. Any sort of XP loss or something is a trivial push to me, compared to having to do an entire section over.

Resident Evil is a really good example of a game that relies on tension built around not being able to save readily and death being imminent. It's a good reason why not every game should get rid of dying.

I think it's telling how not fun replaying sections is that there are whole games that build tension based on the threat of having to replay.

But what about a Resident Evil that has a "cinematic mode" that never makes you die? It'd be a lot more fun the second time around, and even your non-gaming girlfriend could get through it without giving up due to difficulty. This variation on the game would really expand the amount of people who can actually experience a game from beginning to end. SO many games go unfinished by people, and it's just silly. How many movies do you start and not finish? That it is considered acceptable to get an incomplete experience is a big problem for games.

I don't know how many people I've heard say "Oh crap, I have to do it again!?" when losing at a game. That's just not fun for some people. And it should really be about fun.

Regarding death in games, whatever. Thinking back, there are very few recent games I can think of that actually have a heavy penalty for death other than restarting.

You know what else pisses me off? Getting a Game Over in Super Mario Galaxy. The only penalty there is to send you back to the title screen. You don't lose any progress, you just have to click through a few menus to get back to the game. Why.

Where are all the JRPG's this gen? Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Enchanted Arms. 3? That's it?They take a long time to develop, that's the problem (also factor in the launch difference between Japan and U.S. was 6+ months for PS1, Saturn, PS2, Dreamcast, etc. giving devs more time). PS1 didn't start to see decent RPGs until 1997 (It came out in late 1994 in Japan) and didn't start to build a decent selection of RPGs until 1999. The SNES didn't have many RPGs early on but started to get more as it was out a few years. PS2 only had FFX and Shadow Hearts in 1.5 years (the only two RPGs I'd consider worth owning at the time), the next year had a few more RPGs, but PS2 didn't start having a decent selection of RPGs until 2003/2004. GBA and PSP started off with a lot of RPGs ported early on, but eventually started to get original RPGs after being out over 2 years. DS started out with mostly mediocre RPGs, but has started to get much better (especially late last year and this year). We won't be seeing a good number of RPGs until 2009. They will probably take longer to come this generation, since development time on the newer consoles is definitely longer. Right now, most new released RPGs are coming to PSP/DS, since they've been out enough time to get them out.

Basically, the situation with RPGs is they take at least 2 years to develop (many times longer) and the only way to get them out quickly is if one was ported from another platform, the developers were the very first to get development kits and started asap (and basically only worked on it, like Mistwalker and Square with FFX), a 2D low budget RPG (usually by Idea Factory), or some quickly made dungeon explorer (like Evolution, Metal Dungeon, etc.). The first time a dev makes an RPG, they have to develop an all new graphic engine (which takes time) and learn the platform. Once their first RPG comes and goes, releasing a 2nd one will take much less time.

That's why I tell people if you are a big RPG fan, it's best to wait at least 2-3 years to upgrade your console (usually consoles have several FPS and racers early on). JRPGs are usually the last genre to fill up a console and are the usually one of the last few games released on a console (when it dies off).

A good number of JRPGs will come over time, no doubt about it.

There are several posts in this thread I want to reply to, but I'll get to the rest later

Games going unfinished probably has more to do with all of them being 20 hours long and not being captivating all the way through than it does with having to replay sections.

Wouldn't they be able to sell more games more often to people if they blew through them that way?

Call of Duty 4 was a bad one with that. I think hud's don't need to go, but they need to be simplified, more intuitive. A lot of games could be made more fun by having a less discrete and more ambiguous experience. Ditch the meters and numbers, and take time to give the game some feeling.

And a sub-pissOff of that? Fucking Kane and Lynch in co-op. When your partner is downed and you have to give him a shot of ?? (adrenaline?) to save him and not fail the mission, your side of the screen (not your partner, but YOU) turns black and white and you can't hear anything. That's helpful when you're being shot at.

Speaking of simplified HUDs, a game that did that well was The Darkness, IMO. Even though it still had flashy fuck shit screen for your health (I think), the amount of darkness "energy" you had was shown by how full the eyes of the Darkness tentacles were, and the power you had equipped was shown by the color of the eyes.
