I have a ps2 right now but i want to get the other systems (xbox, gamecube). Do you guys think its better to buy the system now ($99) or when the next generation comes out?

I am on a very tight budget and if the xbox and gamecube will still be heavily available after "nex-box" "revolution" and "ps3" come out, then i'd rather do that. Do you guys think there will be a big stock of new xboxs and gamecubes (that become cheap) after the next gen comes out ?

Keep in mind that even after the next-gen systems come out, developers will still be making a few games for PS2, Xbox, and GC. Therefore, the prices of the systems will not drop right after the next-gen systems are released. You might be able to save about $50 on each system by waiting, but considering how long you'd have to wait, it might be worth it just to get the systems now.

You can grab a ps1, n64, and dreamcast for $10 each now. I'll probably wait until I can get an xbox for $10 till I buy one.

It depends if there are some titles you must have for the other systems. If you are on a really tight budget and don't buy a lot of games its probably best to just stick with your PS2 and spend the money on cheap games.

Check the major game retailers for deals on older system hardware.

If you never owned one of the earlier consoles you can get great value on both the hardware and the games. For instance, there were plenty of great Sega Saturn games. Some of them are rare and expensive but the majority can be had very cheaply. for the cost of a single new release on a current system you can pick up a older system and a starter library.

I'd like to know where to get a PS1 that cheap ($10). I haven't found one for under $30 preplayed. I really want to play some of the rpg's on that system and I can get the system plus several games for the cost of a PS2.

This isn't a major retailer, but a local Goodwill had 2 PS1s (original models) for $2.99 each. The hookups were sold separately, but at 99 cents each, it only added another $4 for AC, AV, and 2 controllers.
They have these all the time, too. But they are used.

This is major YMMV or YLMV (your luck may vary).

I go into Goodwill stores a lot . . . mine have never had a PS1 for less than $29.99 --even if its a beat up looking unit with nothing but the sys . . . N64s are usually in the $30 range as well.

On the other hand, I've bought some great old-school systems for $10 each (an Intellivision, Atari 7800, NES . . . one of each of these with original box). I also see alot of cheap carts . . . sometimes $1 for NES games and others.

But Goodwill is all over the map on prices . . . I picked up a Wavebird for $1.99 . . . new in package, but the plastic container was all messed up. Target dumps things onto Goodwill . . .

If you want a brand new system $99 is the bottom. Yes you could find a Dreamcast for $50 after Sega said they were dropping it and yes you can get a new PS1 for $50. But if you want to play the system when there is still some life left (like new games being made). You have to get it as soon as it drops to $99.

yeah man, if you can wait, definitly do so. You will save sooo much money. I bought N64, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube at full price, and when I see the prices of N64s and Dreamcasts now, I cringe, and I'll really break down when I see the newer ones that cheap. Now that I'm off to college, I won't have the money to buy new systems, so I'm gonna wait for them to go supa cheap. It's all a matter of how much money flow you got.

I doubt xboxs will ever be 10 bucks because of how much it costed to make them. xbox will NEVER go below 99 brand new. maybe in 10+ years xbox iwll be like 20 bucks but itll be decades before it goes t0 bucks. this is the same for ps2 and gamecube. plus I actually wanna play good games now so I always buy my systems the day they come out. I hate to see xbox at 150 when I payed 300 but I got to play halo and other wuality games for a year while the people without xbox had to play games on ps1 or whatever. so to me its worth it to just buy it now and now wait 20+ years to get it at 10 bucks

no in 20 years it will go back up in value.

You probably will see it clearenced out about a year or two after next generation of hardware for the $40-$50 range. The problem then becomes finding one in stores.

The Cube can be had for $99 now ith mtroid I believe and a cool box to boot (hold onto it)

you can get used GC for say $60+ depending on where your at so its close to bottom.

The xbox has a ways to drop yet.

If it were me I'd just wait until the new consoles come out and then buy them, especially if you are on a tight budget.

I would get an Xbox now. Its worth it. It has a ton of good games on it now, and a bunch of good ones are coming out this fall/winter.
Also, if you dont have a gaming PC the Xbox is getting ports of a lot of the upcoming big name PC games.

A bit off-topic, but here goes:

Does anyone know FOR SURE if the XBox-Next will be backwards compatible or not? I have heard so many rumors, read a quote from Microsoft saying that it would be, and read other quotes saying that it would not be. Has anything been officially announced about this?

Nothing official to my knowledge. Though if they go with their current hardware configuration for it, it's probably gonna be no.

BTW BigLeb, still got that MVC 2?

If the basic hardware configuration (PowerPC CPU and ATI video w/SiS audion & I/O) this is pretty much guaranteed not to be backward compatible.

It isn't an issue of emulation. That is technically feasible, especially if IBM makes a minor addition to the CPU that used by Motorola on their PPC chips to reduce heavy lifting in emulating x86 processors. The real problem is NVIDIA's proprietary IP in the GPU. Without it a lot of games the directly address the processor instead of going through the API layer will fail.

NVIDIA is uninterested in selling MS a license to the IP for reasons of feeling burned on the Xbox 1 deal and that the data would have to be used by ATI engineers to implement. With those motives driving them the license fee they'd require would make it too expensive by far. This could be avoided by including the NVIDIA silicon in the new machine but that too would also make it much too expensive.

Microsoft has no easy alternatives in this case except to tell everyone who wants to play Xbox games to buy an Xbox.
