View Full Version : Extreme Space Invading! Space Invaders Extreme

I didn't see a topic for this game but since the PSP version has a demo out the hype train has been building up steam.
However, the Nintendo DS version will be the best version of the game to own with its, double screen height, Wi-Fi play (why the PSP lacks this is a mystery), and the optional Paddle Controller. Here's IGN's Craig with his glowing preview: http://ds.ign.com/articles/854/854874p1.html

It looks way too easy. A giant beam that destroys everything? Fire 5 shots at once? I prefer the original, firing one shot at a time with the invaders in a slow death march down to earth, gradually speeding up until there's one or two rushing in to kill you in a final blast of kamikazee glory! Don't forget you have to count the motherships crossing over to get the best score!
Sorry, took me back to my youth there for a second...
Carry on!

Ugh... It's not hard in that sense. The difficulty comes in chaining and hitting all the bonus rounds. I still can't get an A rank on the demo.

I'll be getting it with Arkanoid after I get ahold of a paddle. When that'll be though... I have no idea.

If this controls with stylus + R button, I may like that.
I really enjoyed the PSP Demo and the analog stick worked well with it.

What's with the annoying voice? "Jackpot!", "Jackpot!" is going to ruin it. The glowing reviews based off the PSP demo don't seem to transfer to the DS vid clip. I dunno, it looks kinda cruddy.

It's not quite as easy as this video makes it look. There definitely is a challenge there, especially as you get later in the levels. But half the fun is the Rez-like synchronization with the music. I really like it a lot. But I will say that after playing this a while, I happened upon an old-school Space Invaders cabinet, and it was definitely much harder. :-)

I've spent some time w/ the japanese version and I must say this game is incredibly addictive and a lot of fun. The special powerups don't usually last all that long, and sometimes they're needed just to get through to a boss stage. The later levels get rather hard.
In fact, it even has branching levels where you can choose a harder path. If this launched at $20 it would be a must buy.

Yeah, I was really not expecting the game to be as good as it was, but boy am I happy with it. I've been playing the Japanese version over the last couple of days and the music synchronization, the power ups, bonus rounds, bosses, and branching paths really make the game excellent. It's probably one of the best time wasters I've come across in the last few months.

I haven't seen too many actual reviews of the game but more just hand's on play. Anyone think this is worth the $40 I saw it for on play-asia? I LOVED the game as a kid but is this worth the $$ to pick an extreme makeover for a classic game such as space invaders?

Has the domestic release been confirmed? Do we know if it will still support the paddle (or if it's even coming out here)? I'm thinking of importing Arkanoid and Space Invaders, based on how addictive the PSP demo was.

Bringing this thread back because more I see this game the more I want it. I am even going to get that nob controller from somewhere. I tried to go pre-order it at GameStop however they said it wasn't in their system, and neither was arkanoid DS. I find this sort of odd because it is on their online site. Anyways support this game because it looks amazing.

Well the graphics are obviously "better" on the PSP, but it lacks features that the DS version has.
For example, the DS version has online WiFi where as the PSP does not. I kind of prefer the simpler looking graphics on the DS as well, as it's like more 2D on the DS rather than pseudo 3D that the PSP version has.
Also, the DS version supports the rumble pack.

I think the originals are definitely comparable, but, in terms of quality, the new versions are miles apart. The release of Arkanoid has some improvements, but overall is somewhat a bare-bones version of the original. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's not exactly that exciting either.
One can see that Space Invaders Extreme, on the other hand, has had loads of thought put into it, not just aesthetically, but in terms of keeping the same basic concept and building a whole new system of gameplay around it. I think it's the best shooter on the DS, actually (not that there's loads of shooters, but still...).

Pffft. PSP. ;) There's not a chance I'm getting this on the PSP, so I think I'll just wait till I can play it on the DS, either through the demo or Amazon getting me my copy. And by ignoring the PSP demo, it gives me something else to complain about. If I didn't have that, my existance on the internet would be in danger!
Wow, I just played Arkanoid with the stylus rather than the dpad. That makes an enormous difference. It's actually playable and pretty fun that way. Now I'm more torn on it...

That's funny, since I was at their B&M store back in March, and they didn't have the paddle (they had Arkanoid paddle-less). Unless they've sold out, Play-Asia still had Arkanoid with paddle in stock for $60 shipped.

Kind of annoying, hopefully the local stores (or target) will have it in by the end of the week. Would like to pick it up when I get time to grab Coldplay's latest. Don't have the interest in this to pay shipping, check multiple stores or end my boycott of Gamestop.

Holy shit, this game is amazing. After seeing the high reviews and the general praise around here, I went out and picked up a copy.
I am very glad I did. The comparisons to Pacman CE on XBLA are very apt - this is essentially a completely modern take on a very old idea, jazzed and jumpin'.
It's like Space Invaders + Lumines.
Highly recommended. I need to try out the multiplayer with someone.

my thoughts exactly. freakin awesome!!! best $20 i've ever spent.
i never played Lumines but it reminded of Rez where every shot adds the beat to the song. every shot in Space Invaders has it's own sound effect too. like i shot this blue enemy who has a little shield in front of him and that made a clanging sound. shoot the explosive enemies and they make a different sound. soo much fun.
just when i thought the paddle was pretty awesome with Arkanoid, it's 1000x better with this game. soooo precise and very arcade-like. i recommend it.

This is very awesome. I mean.. this, IMO, has potential as "DS Game of The Year".. I mean, even "Handheld game of the year" would be appropriate.

I don't have the game yet (and won't for a while - I've bought too much), but how in the world would the paddle controller be "arcade-like"? Space Invaders didn't use a paddle controller. It was three buttons: left, right and shoot. You don't move at different speeds, there was only one speed. The face buttons on the DS would be far more "arcade-like" than a paddle controller.

Well it sounds like this version is not trying to be true to the original at all, hence I think people are saying the paddle makes it more like a traditional arcade-machine experience, not necessarily more true to the Space-Invaders experience.

It's awesome. Again, pretty much does for Space Invaders what Pacman CE did for Pacman. Make a stale old game feel fresh and fun again.
It's hard as balls too--at least for me. Only on Stage 4 (did the easy path on stage 3, think I took the hard on 4).
Is hard on the thumb from all the shooting though!
what do friend codes do in this game???
It has wifi multiplayer. Haven't played it yet, but it seems like things you do send crap your opponents way (kind of like planet puzzle league in that sense I guess) and whoever loses all their cannons first loses the match). Pretty sure the PSP version doesn't have online multiplayer.
May have a friends leaderboard--not sure on that. Definitely a worldwide leaderboard though.

it really does. i played Space Invaders at Dave & Busters last night and mann it was tough...kinda boring. where are my lights and sounds?! haha naw it was ok and i liked the challenge, but i opted to play Galaga instead.
two questions:
1. can you unlock the original in Extreme? i'm only on stage 4 as well, so i haven't unlocked it as of yet if it's in the game.
2. dumb question: to get a ROW, you just have to shoot all the enemies in one row, no misses? i can get COLUMN, SAME SHAPE, SAME COLOR no problem but ROW isn't happening for me.

I can't stress how addicting this game is to me. All of my downtime at work consists of me mumbling obscenities to myself when I get killed.
Still stuck on Stage 4 in Arcade Mode. Can't get past 3 in Ranking Mode. It's a real challenge to go all the way in this game, should take me a while longer until I start cruising through this game. Then once I do, I'll be hitting single stages to get high scores. There's really a shitload to do with this game.
Online is a plus, finally won my first online versus match tonight.
Now, I need to hunt down and download the soundtrack for this game.

Send me a PM when you do man. I wonder if you'll find the PSP or DS version first.

NCSX has the paddles in all colors back in stock for $26 and some change plus S&H. I ordered black to match my senior citizen DS. I would have prefered red but alas...
Oh and for some reason, I want Pink

EDIT: Screw That TRU sale. I'm gonna go pick this game up for $10 plus tax tomorrow at Micro Center thanks to that coupon!

awesome. this is gonna sound so wrong: i just ordered a pink paddle for my gf.
anyway, the soundtrack you're looking for is Space Invaders Extreme Audio Cluster which you can get through Play-asia (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-8l-77-5-49-en-15-space+invaders+extreme-70-2lkw.html).

Rumble pack support is listed right on the game case.

MEGA WTF!!!!!!!!
Developers remember that thing? Omg! *looks at DS* "Grow another damn GBA slot pronto. Daddy wants to plug all your holes with gaming peripheral goodness."
That's really cool that they included support for the pak. I can think of oh, MOST action games in need of the pak. Contra 4, Dementium, Nanostray 2, Geometry Wars, Rocket Slime, etc. come to mind.

picked this up today while i was at gamestop using the 20% off used ds/gba/psp coupon. Obviously this wasn't available used yet, just picked it up on top of the 5 used games i got. Now i await the arrival of my joystick from japan.

Picked it up today too.
The rumble turned out to be pretty crappy and pointless. It's constantly ticking away to the bass of the music beat (nonstop without variation), but NOT for when you hit an alien. Ugh.
The DS version is ugly as hell too! Those blocky explosions really make it retro. I guess I'm a little disappointed after playing the PSP demo that had much nicer looking flares of destruction. Everything is just not as crisp and clear. Oh well.
So that leaves the saving grace of wi-fi mutliplayer which I will have to test out soon.

Well yeah it's lacking the PSP's "Crisp-O-Maker" in the graphics department but it's not that big of a deal. I'd rather take a hit in graphics to get a plus in silly rumble, a paddle controller, and well Wi-Fi.

Anyone figure out exactly what you have to do to be able to choose the harder stages? i.e. stage 3B instead of 3A.
It must be tied to score and/or rank. I finished off the A path yesterday and it took me a couple of replays to have 3B available the time it was there I'd Ranked A on stage 1 and S on stage 2.
Just curious on what the actual cut offs are to get the option--also for 4B, C and 5B, C & D.

i completed Stage 4 with an S and it gave me the option for choosing 5A and 5B. on the previous stages i got an B or lower and it didn't let me choose. A or better sounds about right.

I DLed the DS version (cough, rom, cough) to give it a test drive before I buy it but I thought I'd rather have this on the PSP. I'm a sucker for the pretty graphics and sounds. I won't be playing it with anyone either so no big deal there. I just got back from Wal Mart and they didn't have it... sadly. I'll have to check Gamestop tomorrow. This game is great!!

"The game’s an absolute steal at 20 bucks on either the Nintendo DS or the PlayStation Portable, but if you want the definitive version of this fantastic classic revisit, the Nintendo DS version is it." - IGN review.
PSP version lacks online leaderboards(seems lame but it is actually fun to play ranked mode and see how you stack up against japanese players).
PSP lacks online play(supports local play).
PSP lacks game sharing.
IGN ranks graphics, sound, and gamplay exactly the same on psp and DS, but DS has better presentation, and more lasting appeal.
Also I think the dual screens are actually put to good use, especially on bosses.
Anyways that is just my thought on psp vs. ds.

I really don't understand why the PSP version doesn't have online leaderboards. It really makes no sense at all. The ranking mode IS really fun, too!
If the DS/PSP versions were the same exact thing, I would have actually picked up the PSP version because it would look/sound better.
But then again, the DS version doesn't look or sound bad plus using both screens is pretty awesome.

Can't say if the dual screens is a good or bad yet. Sometimes it's distracting to shift up and down past the gap when most of the action is at the bottom half, and then something flies off to the other screen. Certainly ups the difficulty.
I'm stuck on stage 3 boss already. I keep running out of time when the two aliens merge and I can't shoot out all the blocks fast enough. Those red squares are juuuust out of reach.
In terms of PSP:
Space Invaders Extreme could have been a perfect opportunity to showcase what the PSP can do better. But nope, they had to ruin it by inexplicably leaving out wi-fi multiplayer. Do I blame Sony or Square Enix? Dumbasses.
If it weren't for the shortcomings, I would have bought the PSP version too. And SONY would have seen actual game sales on their side of things. Imagine playing full tilt with none of this friend code BS. Sigh.

More on Sony for not having a dedicated network for PSP online. That forces developers to incorporate it themselves, and it probably wasn't worth it for Square Enix to do it for a game like this that probably won't sell huge numbers anyway. i.e. online play probably wouldn't boost sales enough to make it worthwhile.
Vs. the DS where they just have to build in support for the Nintendo WiFi service.

Disappointing none-the-less.
Funny, considering Nintendo (I'm looking at you wii) isn't exactly known for great multiplayer wi-fi support either. Guess having a network at least gives them a slight leg up, especially for games that work well online.
Still need to get my friend code for Space Invaders. The weak DS antenna and wireless b is hampering my ability to play down in the living room.

Got my paddle today and yes it DOES make a difference. Dodging bullets is like nothing now. You just spin the wheel and bam you are on the other side of the screen. Only tricky part is precision shooting which is required for high scores. But once I get the hang of it it'll be hard going back to the d-pad for Ranking Mode/Online.

I thought I read some where that using the paddle disable you scores from being uploaded to the leaderboard since it was an unfair advantage....

The dual screens are definitely good. For one, you can change the "thickness" of the screen separation in the Options -- an impressive touch I wish more games had.

Game is hard as nails, on the harder paths. Been stuck on stage 5 B for quite a while. Did finally at least make it to the boss last night, but was on my last life (playing with 5) and lasted about 5 seconds. :(
I never was much good at these types of games, have a hard time concentrating on both what I'm shooting at and what's going on at the bottom (run sideways into shots etc.). Not to mention those damn dive bombing instant kill bastards!

When do you guys usually go online for SIE? I've played random wireless opponents around 11pm - 1am EST, but there aren't that many people waiting. It's kinda sad just staring at the screen and nobody shows. LOL.
Space Invaders Extreme needs a bigger online base. Of course everyone who got the PSP version is out of luck and cuts the player pool down.

Finally had enough and threw it on Goozex this morning. Just wasn't my cup of tea--which isn't surprising given I've never liked old school arcade games much. Oh well, t hat's the beauty of goozex, easy to try stuff out and ditch it for little loss.
In this case technically some "profit" since it already got matched for 550 points which is the equivalent of $27.50 if you were to buy the goozex points for $5 per 100 points.
