New Disgaea game for the DS mentioned in Famitsu (http://www.dsfanboy.com/2008/03/05/famitsu-disgaea-coming-to-the-ds/)
Well, Disgaea fans will be happy to know that the latest issue of Famitsu has a nice little tidbit of information within the confines of its pages. A new Disgaea title has been confirmed to be in the works for the DS, adding another installment in the franchise that fans are pretty much sure to love. Looks like they finally got around to checking out those poll results (http://www.dsfanboy.com/2007/07/09/help-decide-which-handheld-gets-disgaea/).
Rough translation (courtesy of GAFfer Tenbatsu) shows the game to be called Disgaea: Prince of the Demon World and the Red Moon. So based on that, we can predict the game will have some kind of demon world play an important role, as well as a prince and some kind of red moon. What can we say? We're gaming journalists. It's what we do.
It's actually a port, but it looks like it will contain everything from Afternoon of Darkness and more. Also, apparently all the cutscenes and voice acting will remain intact. (Edit: Some of the voice acting has been cut, but not all of it.)
Thanks to SL4IN for this link: http://kotaku.com/369309/some-disgaea-ds-details-revealed
Niida goes on to mention that this version of the game will include everything from the PSP version plus extra content. For Digaea fans this should prove to quite interesting news.
Here's the full interview mentioned in that Kotaku post: http://www.crispygamer.com/_GeneratedPages/news/newsitem560.aspx
Two other DS Nippon Ichi games have also been mentioned - Jigsaw World and Rhapsody, the latter of which may be another port (but at least it's a port of an older/harder to find title!). Source (http://www.dsfanboy.com/2008/03/06/disgaea-ds-nis-titles-revealed/)

I would guess 6 months to a year after it's out in Japan. And it's probably not out in Japan until the end of the year at the earliest.
Looking forward to more info on Disgaea, a new game would be awesome.

I just got hour of darkness for PS2 on Rosenqueen (sp?) for $30.
Im not planning to spend another $30 on the same game again.
Besides, arent they hard at work on making Disgaea 3?
Disgaea 3 is already out in Japan and a US version should be out later this year.

Why wouldnt it come out over here? Hasn't every single Disgaea game seen a US release? Disgaea is alot more popular here than most niche Japanese titles.

Updated the original post. Disgaea DS looks to be a port after all, so not too exciting. I hope it includes Etna Mode and other extras, since I never got Afternoon of Darkness (no PSP), and that might convince me to buy the DS version.
A Rhapsody port though... would pick that up for sure.

A port for psp version, I'll pass. I'm never a fan of Nintendo Ds sound system. When it comes voice dialog, it will sound all grainy or hard to hear, games like Luminous Arc or any other ds game with voice dialog.

I wouldn't mind a Disgaea port. I borrowed a freind's copy of the original ps2 version but never was able to complete it. (stopped at the rainbow rangers, haha).
But seeing how Front Mission was accepted here and FFTactics A2 hopefully coming out here, I don't think it'll do so well here. Especially since it's a cult following type of game.

I'm kind of annoyed that they didn't work on Disgaea 2 for PSP instead of porting to the DS, but maybe this will mean more exposure for the series which is more valuable.

How disappointing. I'd rather have them bomb and NIS abandon the platform entirely than use it as a cash cow for their other developments.
I thought they were stubbornly turning the corner, having ignored the marketshare situation for all these years, as if they were really happy with publishing all those Idea Factory games.
I was all ready to resume my support of the company after hearing their announcement of DS support. I had started shopping around for GrimGrimoire and Soul Nomad. Now I get to revoke it until they show the platform a little more respect.

Just got an email:
Disgaea DS is a port of Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness for PSP, so it has an Etna mode and multiplayer mode as well. This DS version has an option to play with the stylus. Also, there will be a grid map on the top screen, so you can strategize even better!

I hoped for something more original than a port, yea, definitely going to pass on this and wait for the Disgaea 2 Port (crossing fingers) for the PSP. I wonder how the audio and music will turn out on the DS version vs the PSP/PS2.

Let's face it: most of Disgaea was recycled environments. If you drop the video and voice work, it's really no bigger than any other SRPG -- you just have to keep hitting the same boards over and over.
Name the last Ds rpg game that lasted 50 + hours (besides pokemon)

No, not really. I didn't hate it, it was a nice to add a little something extra for the folks who had already played Disgaea, but it wouldn't recommend buying it if all you want is Etna's story.

It was ok, but that question is better answered if you like to max out your characters. If you do, Etna's mode is the better place for it, so in that regard, it would be worth it.

Wow. I would'nt have guessed that that the DS version would look as good as the PS2/PSP, but they look identical. Day one purchase for sure.
As far as fitting on a DS cart. The game is mostly numbers and stats, I doubt the ps2 version even came close to filling a dvd. I dont even remember much video or animation in the game. Wasn't the story told thru static image cutscenes?

It was told with voice overs. Plenty of fans are worried that the one thing thats gonna get the axe on this port of a port is the voice acting. I know that the gba could handle voices with riviera. And if luminous arc had voices, then so should this

DS Fanboy has posted a couple of gameplay trailers: http://www.dsfanboy.com/2008/07/30/get-a-glimpse-of-disgaea-ds/
The music has definitely taken a hit in quality and sounds like it may have been rerecorded altogether (the piece featured in the videos is "Running Fire" if you have the soundtrack handy and want to do a comparison). The voices sound the same. Also, the top screen overhead map works very much in tandem with the bottom screen, which is nice; I had my doubts about how the top screen was being used, but it looks like it could be a handy feature.

Yep, you can get the Beauty of War figures through importers (http://www.hlj.com/product/KBYTF-52).
Wonder what the secret figure is; Flonne, I'm guessing.

then it would be NISA responsibility to resend it. Or I could just pick it up since their shipping location is like 30mins from where i live
yea but that mean longer wait times : ) hopefully they ship early and we get the game around the same time it hits the store

okay now im worried
This item is a series of gashapon (capsule toys) or trading figures depicting characters or people. It does not require either cement or paint to complete or use.
so these things are small like something that comes out of a gumball machine

I don't know how big these particular ones are are, but gashapon/blind box figures tend to vary in size. Some can be as tall as 4-5 inches, and a lot of them require a simple bit of assembly.

It's funny, the DS is going to be my main system of choice for the rest of the year. With all the RPG's hitting it. damn....oh and Castlevania too....and Kirby.
Disgaea DS is going to be made of win, I just don't know if I can find the time for it.

i wouldnt be dumping my psp copy just yet... i would rather keep the PSP copy and dump the buggy ds verison
The biggest problem with the DS version is that they cutted out most of the voice. NISA said that the US DS version will retain all the voice. The PSP version has a few bugs, like the counter bug that would freeze your game. If they can fix all the problems the DS version could be worth keeping.

Looks like there will be a new guide for Disgaea it covers the ps2, psp, and DS Disgaea games it's $14.99 on gamestop.com and says it ships on september 12 not a bad price if you don't have the guide for it yet..
http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=72535
Amazon also has it..

I really wished I didn't buy the guide for the psp one when I bought the game, ah well live and learn.
I got my order in for the disgaea and rhapsody I can't wait till it comes out. :bouncy:

Review up at RPGamer: http://www.rpgamer.com/games/disgaea/disgaeads/disgaeadsstrev1.html
The lack of a quick-save option makes me sad, but it sounds all right overall.
Good review. I was initially irritated by lack of quick-save until I realize I probably wouldn't have played it as a portable anyway. I was never exposed to the VO of the PS2 so I won't miss that either. Slowdown doesn't bother me that much either.

Okay, so I absolutely love Disgaea, and I easily put 160+ hours into the PSP version. Preorder bonuses aside, is there any real reason for me to buy this again for the DS?

Har har, the Prinny commentary looks pretty neat. It seems like a decent bandaid for having to cut out alot of the voices. I think there are a few other new playable characters but not too many. Gamefaqs had a list but I forgot who was on it.

The game does get funnier as you go along. How far along are you?
As for tips, try to stick to one group of characters (around 10-12; no more than 18 or so) for your party, that way you don't have to level up a huge number of characters. Pay attention to what each character's weapon strengths and weaknesses are. Mages and Skulls can be very powerful additions to your team. Take advantage of the Dark Assembly and visit the Item World if you ever need to grind. Visit the stores often, as their inventory changes all the time.
That's all I can think of right now.

ITEM WORLD IS EVIL.... EVIL I SAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if you spend too much time in ITEM WORLD it will ruin the game cause it will make your people way too powerful
One knock I have is they don't list the gender when you're creating a character. Healer I thought was a girl had a battle grunt of a boy and other way around with my fighter. Who's a boy and who's a girl. Is so hard to tell with Jap anime art style.

I just picked this up. The tutorial really turned me off, but once I got passed that, it hasn't been so bad. I don't have much experience with SRPG's, but I think I'm doing well enough... I have this game and Rhapsody for quite awhile. Yet, I still haven't open it. I'm a little burnt out from playing too many NIS. It gonna hard for me to readjust to old Disgaea style when the latest one, Disgaea 3, is far more balanced in terms of skills, weapons and job classes.

Remember that overall the story line is supposed to be funny. There will be sincere moments, but when silly things happen (my favorite being the zombie equipped with a Horse Weiner) laugh at them and keep playing. Disgaea is not a series that takes itself too seriously.
And don't worry. You'll learn more about the Prinnies soon enough.

All right. That's good to know. I've had a few chuckles as it were. But how do you actually pronounce the title? Dis-gay-ah?
And it's really growing on me. But is there a lot of grinding necessary?

Dis-guy-ah is how I've always said it.
I hardly ever grinded in this game. I've went through a stage for a second time on, maybe, 3 or 4 occasions. You can beat the game if your level is around 65-70, if I remember correctly.

Reincarnation help improve your base stats depend on the level you reincarnated. So level 9999 will get more than level 5000. It also add more distribution points based on total level you reincarnation. Basically, it help improve your base stats.
When you factor base stats, character level, reincarnation, weapons, weapon level, specialist, skill level and character equipment boost; that equal to tons of damage.

So reincarnating my level 38 Laharl isn't a good thing or won't do much?
fatbeer
10-21-2008, 02:15 AM
Reincarnating at a low level will yield low benefits, so it's probably not worth your time. Every time you reincarnate your character, they will default back to level 1.
Anyone still playing this? I just hit 120 hour mark and kind of stuck on Final Episode's second mission. Enemies are dealing over 1000 damage to even Laharl! I really hate warp tiles covering the entire map At least I can gain 8-9 levels for killing the boss of previous mission. Not asking for tips btw, just venting :)

120 hours in you should have no problems beating the main game. I'm 95 hours in and I have 2 characters over level 300, and most of my team is in the 90's. I know you didn't ask for tips, but I have 2 words... Item World.
I can't stop playing this. Now I'm preparing my team to start Etna mode, where the tutorial map enemies start at level 65.

What the... item world weren't a good place to level up for me with enemies being so easy or so hard to be worth the trouble. There is a sweet spot but it doesn't last. Unless there's a bonus I just usually head for the exit down to next level. Well I beat the game with level 68 Laharl and it only took me 130 hours. Final boss Seraph's counter attacks were killing every one of my counter attackers except Laharl. In the end with my troops dwindling I had to corner Sepraph against the wall with Laharl and Thursday with my strider using the Bullet Storm(?) move. I have no idea how you reached level 300 in 95 hours though.
Edit>Well it could just be creating every single humanoid classes and leveling them up which slowed me down. And deleting them and creating a upgraded one when it becomes availiable :D

Can anyone (now that they've completed the game) tell me exactly how much of the voice acting is cut. I've played through it on the PS2, and am quite used to having the voices. I'm in act 1 and have already noticed some cuts. Can anyone help me out with how extensive it is?

Use team attackes to level up new characters. Bring low levels out next to your main guys to get in on team attacks, then put them back into the base panel.
Also farm a few Statisticians from items. In an hour or two you can combine to get a 300 level Statistician, which when put in your weapons or armor lets you earn 4 times the experience for everything you kill. Then you'll level up in no time.

Almost all the voice work is gone. At least 90% of it. The only voice left in the game is the beginning of each new chapter. I think all the in-battle voice is still there.

This is one knock I have about Disgaea. Without a faq or a guide there's no way people will figure out things like this. I still don't know what Witch Doctor, Broker, Manager, and etc does. Oh and I gave all the little people from Item World to Laharl. I only leveled up Legendary items cause they have more slots.
