Literally. Every time I fucking press the button to eject or power on/off I get a static electric shock! Now granted it's winter, the air is dry, and I wear socks and walk around on carpet but there is no other surface in my house that shocks me as often or as hard as the buttons on the ps3 console . Has anyone else been experiencing this?

Yeah Michigan winters do that to me too. Some days worse than others. It sucks.

Summer can't come fast enough to be honest.

you can press the home button to turn on/off the console and use the triangle button to eject discs. PROBLEM SOLVED.

keep a used dryer sheet around, they're good at getting rid of static.

I get the exact same thing, I just learned to live without. Although, I think we should jump on the Class Action Lawsuit quickly.

I get the same thing so now I just instinctively touch some surrounding object to ground before i touch the ps3.

I never have to touch my PS3. I just use the PS button to turn it on/off, and press triangle to eject discs.

What I do to make sure I don't shock my PS3 is, when it's winter, I touch my 360 HDD first (which shocks me or it doesn't), then I'm fine to insert or take out a disc.

I get shocked many times a day in my basement where my PS3 and Xbox 360 are, anytime I get up to turn on or off one of them, (or turn on a light switch) I brace for the impending shock I'm about to get)

winter sucks... this should change once it starts to get a little warmer and a little more humid. it's not just the PS3

Spray your carpet with static guard every once in awhile in the winter, especially the area in front of the systems. Static guard works great if you get shocked getting in and out of your vehicles in the winter also, spray the seats once and shocks go away for months.

can't we just make it to spring before we start worrying about summer in michigan?

You may want to discharge yourself by touching something else first so you don't end up zapping the ps3 to death.

And touch it with a bit of your body thats less sensitive, like your knuckle intead of your finger tip.

I get shocks so bad off things I can often see a little blue spark, so I try to discharge myself by touching my knuckle to the screw in a light switch to discharge before I touch anything electrical.

Spring and Fall are usually a week long in this craptastic state.

Like others have said, it's because of how dry the air is, your best bet is to pour a glass of water over your PS3 before touching it, that way the air isn't so dry. That or play the PS3 ONLY in the bathtub, I've heard that works as well.

I always discharge myself by touching the grounded metal enclosure of my cable box before touching the PS3. This is more out of habit than necessity. If Sony did not ground the front panel buttons on the PS3 and ESD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrostatic_discharge) zapped the console every time you went to turn it on we'd have a lot of dead PS3s. Also, keep in mind that ESD events happen all the time whether you can hear/feel the shock or not. This is why you should never handle exposed circuit boards if your body is not fully discharged. Most consumer electronics that are housed in an enclosure should be protected from ESD if they are built well.

That's weird, I've never been shocked by the PS3... This is the first I've heard of this happening as well. I just do what some others do and just turn the console on using my sixaxis. :)

I use to get shocked by it all the time. I haven't in a long time. It is some type of clothing your wearing. Also it is where it is so cold.

The question is why are you guys touching your PS3 to turn it on in the first place especially when you can turn it on with your controller?
I've also got in the habit of grounding myself, by touching the back of my hand to my metal bed post, especially since I was always getting shocked when I touch my laptop. That should eliminate any problems.

People actually use the buttons on the PS3? I just use the controller to turn it on and eject the discs.

This thread is awesome. I have had the same thing happen to me before and to answer the question on why you would hit the button, the answer is pretty simple.

When I get up to swap discs if I forget to eject it before walking over to the system its a lot simpler to hit a button on the system than to walk back to my couch to grab the controller or my bluray remote.

I will also use the power button if I decide to eject a disc and then decide to turn off the system when I walk over to put the disc away. Touching the system used to give me shocks but I've gotten in the habit of doing what a lot of others have mentioned, namely touching something else first. I have a lamp on my windowsill that is next to my tv that I tap everytime I go to touch any of my systems.

Are you guys sure the Eject/Power buttons are shocking you? It has never shocked me, but the fucking chrome is what shocks me. I use the remote to turn on the ps3 but I always use the eject button to eject the disc. I make sure i never touch the chrome whenever I swap discs.

I should get that static guard for my car. It doesn't shock me but whenever I go to open a door with metal handle bars afterwards it usually does.

Probably a stupid question, but is there a "home" button on the ps3 dvd remote?

Probably a stupid question, but is there a "home" button on the ps3 dvd remote? What do you mean? PS Button (there is one between the L's and R's)? Or are you talking about main menu on a DVD (called Top Menu, right under the green button)?

The Mana Knight

I mean, is there a way to turn the console off with the ps3 dvd remote?Yes, press the PS button on the remote and choose Turn off console. It's not just a one button press (works like a regular controller), but not too hard.
