I love survival horror movies.

Zombie movies.....world coming to an end for no reason movies.

Pretty much anything that has a small group of people cut off from the world.

I think I have tapped out pretty much most of the well known movies out there. And I am getting down towards the nitty gritty, problem is that there is no actually survival horror genre so its hard to find new stuff.

Hit me with your suggestions please and thank you.

Any type stuff.

Dawn of the Dead
Cloverfield (though I hated that movie)
The Mist

Hell even war movies that have a small group of people trying to get through the enemy.

Its the survival part that really interests me. The being cut off from real resources, not knowing where the enemy is coming from, not being able to trust people around you because of the paranoia.

Things of that nature.

same with Le Dernier Combat (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085426/) (though this kinda hinges on if you can sit through a film that is pretty much silent outside of sound efx)

I'd suggest 30 Days of Night and -- though I haven't seen the film -- the novel of I am Legend defined survival horror, so the movie might be worth checking out. Also, Dog Soldiers -- take Dawn of the Dead, replace zombies with werewolves and average citizens with Scottish commandos and you have this movie.

I actually almost bought the DVD box set when deepdiscount had them on sale. Been forever since I've seen them and I don't recall if I saw the last one. Then they ran them all back to back for a week on Monsters HD and I forgot how bad they were.

That being said, "Monsters HD" is the greatest channel around. Sometimes they run too many shitty sequels and not enough of the originals though. But horror films in HD kick ass. I saw the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre in HD and its looks phenomenal.

Ravenous = most unique soundtrack ever. It's this quirky music but it either makes scenes 10x creepier (like the cave search) or makes them 10x funnier because it totally doesn't fit the context of what you are seeing.

I recommend a movie called. Bio-Zombie. To anyone who has not seen it. Its a Japanese film but it should have sub titles. Its a comedy kinda like Shaun of the dead.

Thats actually a flick from HK.

Junk (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0273302/) is another pretty cool little zombie flick from Japan.

Though they don't follow the anime, the live action Zeiram flicks are pretty good.

If you can find a boot or wait for it to finally hit dvd Living Dead In Tokyo Bay (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0225156/) is a really cool low budget flim

Evil Dead Trap (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167147/) would also fit under the survival horror banner and its a pretty good flick.

Though its a bit hit or miss on if you dig it, 964 Pinocchio (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0225009/) and its prequel, Rubber's Lover (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0227408/) was really good.

Another good one is Electric Dragon 80,000 Volts (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0276935/)

Then there is Tetsuo (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096251/) that fits though pretty much every flick by Shinya Tsukomoto fits under the banner.

I think he could pass on The Village, its an awful movie and the so called "Twist" could be seen coming 10 seconds into the movie. also it proves my theory that M. Night Shamalamadingdong is a horrible writer.

The Hills Have eyes is alright at best, but other than that its a mindless gore/rape-fest.

Blood diamond has that Survival feeling, as well as children of men

The Edge - Survival movie, two guys that hate eachother stuck in the wilderness fighting psychotic bears. Awesome.

Hildago was a great movie, had that whole Indiana Jones vibe to it.

I just thought of two more, although you probably saw them ... The Village and The Hills Have Eyes

This is not to bash you mak, I very much thank you for your suggestions and hope that you will continue.

Yeah, like Joe said The village was a horrid movie. And I dont think it really fits in survival horror...as there is nothing in the movie that is survival.....or horror.

Also The Hills Have Eyes is a perfect example of what I dont want and why I made this thread in the first place. I have never seen it...nor will I ever want to see it. I do not respect anyone who worked/filmed/wrote a movie like that.

Its incredibly hard to find a "survival horror" movie because they all get lumped into the same category as piss poor 2nd rate hack and slash gore fest just for the sake of gore oh look please like our movie because we put boobs in it.

Its not that I dislike gore....but I really looking for a movie with a real plot that that is developed. And like The hills have eyes and 90% of horror movies are horror because the writer/director are not talented enough to make it any thing more than that. So they fill it will "shock" scenes to fill in all the blanks of their movie.

There are only a handful of directors in the world that are good enough to pull of a rape scene or a sex scene. I am all for boobies like the next guy. But when you need to fill 10 min or 20 min of a movie because you cant write a real scene you put in sex scene.

Just to reiterate I am looking for survival horror with an emphasis on the survival part. 28 days/weeks later is a perfect example. Little gorey but great plot with the main char going through different levels of paranoia and fear, even movies like Children of Men work fine because of the way its written.

So just remember this is a thread about Survival first...horror and gore second.

Thanks to all again.

I saw Event Horizon in theaters, started out great, ended up terrible. Sunshine came much closer to being a great movie, but again the ending mucked it all up. I don't know why they insist on turning a great thriller into a monster movie.

Wicker Man (original) - great story, plus it actually makes sense once you think about it afterwards.

The Descent was great.

Soodmeg, based on your post (72) I think you'd really like Sunshine. Have you seen it yet?

Sunshine? I have never even heard of it. Completely in the dark on that one. Care to enlighten?

It's set in the future where the sun is dying. A group of scientist are taking a spaceship with a payload of nuclear devices composed of all the uranium/plutanium on Earth and they're trying to detonate it in the sun to kick start it. Along the way they encountered the ship of the first mission that disappeared mysteriously seven years earlier. I shant say more than that.

Movie = incredibly disappointing, with lame monsters/zombies

Book (short story) = fan-fucking-tastic

agreed... book was great.

While i was not a fan of the CG in the movie (horrible imo).... for a hollywood butchering .... i didn't think it was all that bad.. probably because of will smith's performance.

The Last Man On Earth (with the awesome Vincent Price) was the best movie version of I Am Legend.

What blew my mind is how much weight he lost for that movie and put back on for Batman in a short period.

not sure if anyone watches animated survival horror or still reads this thread, but two movies were recently released.

Dead Space: Downfall

Resident Evil: Degeneration

both of which are based on the video games and have recurring characters. They were pretty entertaining in my opinion o.O

It's been mentioned before, but if you missed Feast a few pages back, it's a good tongue-in-cheek hold-down-the-bar-from-attacking-creatures movie. Good scares, and good laughs.

Children of Men is amazing, as is Sunshine.

What about some post apocalyptic war movies. I didn't read all of the thread to see if some have been posted or not. I will check it out later. I'm really looking for some that have sceens like the future sceens from terminator. Sorry for highjacking the thread some but they do fit into the type of movies you asked about OP.

I created an account specifically so that I could tell you to watch Dead Snow. It is a Norwegian film about Nazi zombies. It's fantastic; if you like Evil Dead then you can appreciate this.
I know a lot of people are against foreign films, but this one is totally worth it.

That was gonna be my contribution, but I thought I'd better skim through the thread before I sent it; second to the last post and there it was.

I thought that was a cool movie. It really had a zombie type feel to it.

I never saw The Crazies but, in my head, it's like The Signal. I mean, everyone in The Signal goes crazy so it must be true :)

if any of you liked the thing you have to play the ps2 game that shit was awesome. ending boss was shite but the game was more about the journey than the destination.
