It jumped to $.30 here today, and there are rumors from the oil company in town to expect around $4.00 by friday but possibly by tomorrow.

The Gifuto
03-10-2008, 08:26 PM
I would suspect that if it was going to jump, they wouldn't wait until tomorrow. Afterall, with oil closing at $107.90, why wouldn't the oil companies jump at the chance to gouge the American consumer (regardless of the fact that the gasoline already sitting in those tanks was not derived from oil purchased at that price).

On the flip side, perhaps the greedy, self-centered Americans need to be punished economically for all of the soccer moms blindly driving around their Suburbans and Tahoes....

In positive economic news, McDonalds rose 2.9% today! Rancid beef must be on special.

I think it depends where you are. Gas here was $3.27, and I bought $25 worth (maybe I'll go get some more now that I know how much oil went up today), so I think $4.00 is unreasonable since it would be over a 20% increase in one day. I wouldn't be so surprised if it goes to $3.50, which is still ridiculous.

It doesn't "punish" those people. They have no problem paying $4 a gallon.

And no, gas is not going to jump to $4 everywhere tomorrow.

We live in Cuba? The nation only has one price?

It's already $5.50 in at least one place, it's most likely $4.00+ already in a few places, but at the same time the cheaper places are still at $2.50.

gas wont jump to 4 bucks all of the sudden. theyre saying over time it will get to 4 bucks as of now some states are already paying that much while most are paying 3 and some change. if all of the sudden gas everywhere was 4 bucks overnight the shit would hit the fan. especially here since the cheapest gas here is 3.04 per gallon and the most expensive is 3.13 per. you must have heard part of the gas story where they said theyre expecting gas to rise to 4 bucks a gallon not that tomorrow wed all be at 4 bucks.

gas hits 4 bucks and stays there expect a major crash.,

If people are working for 6 bucks an hour and say it takes 2 gallons of gas each way

16 bucks per day in gas for 48 bucks in cash before taxes. FIgure in taxes be lucky to pull down 30 per day... minus te 16 bucks for gas

14 bucks per day. or 1.75 per hour. sorry but many people will not work for 1.75 per hour

I know for a fact if gas hits 4 bucks and stay that high or higher for 2+ months i will quit my job. This is why right now im taking everything i can do at my job. Im putting back ever extra penny so i have money to fall back on when i quit

Then again i might be fired instead of quitting. I work delivering newspaper and RUMOR is alot of cities are going to do away with the paper very soon . YOu will only be able to get the paper out of a machine. Home delivery will no longer happen. HEre they have already starting joining routes together.

Around here they have already fired 1/2 of the bundle handlers and just made the others ones double up with no increase in pay.

tomorrows going to be fun. My millage is going to jump from around 59 miles per day to close to 84. and my #$#$##$ car only gets 12 miles per gallon.

I'm paying over $4.00 a gallon already. But I drive a diesel. Diesel hasn't been under $3.50 here since before last summer.

Whatever the gas prices are locally it's usually a lot higher (think over a dollar in some parts) behind the redwood curtain in Northern Cali. So I believe gas could be $5.50 up there (Yosemite?).

While 4 dollars a gallon would suck, relative to $3 a gallon, it's not like it's a new cost that's going to bankrupt someone. Another $10-$20 per fill-up. Granted, it used to only cost me $10 to fill up my car. 1997-98 was an awesome year. 87 cents!

All I know is that when I started spending a lot more on gas I just started cutting back on other areas. $2.50 per gallon hit? I started eating out less during the week to compensate (2 times less, usually). $3.00? Brown bag lunch, only hit theaters when a huge movie comes out and I can catch it for $6 instead of $11. $3.50? So long $60 (closer to $45, thanks to CAG) new-release games! You're relegated to every-other-month status!

It doesn't bother me too terribly since I can still cut out a hell of a lot more in most of my budgets to compensate if need be (CAG does build gaming backlogs) but not everyone is in the same boat.

Someone has to do something about this though and really I think it is time they start dipping into reserves to give some relief at the pump. Gas has become the crippler for of course the low income people but it is putting the old "middle class" people down a bracket. Well finally now we can see this country is making a clear line through it's citizens of rich and just making it.

Just had to add this because this is classic

But as oil prices rose gasoline prices stayed stagnant and profit margins enjoyed by refiners shrank. Now those profit margins have become so small refiners have little incentive to make gasoline.
"The refiners are saying, 'Hey we're not making any money,'" said Tim Statts, vice president of risk management for Summit Energy, a firm that buys energy for big users. "The gasoline price almost has to come up to continue bringing the product to market."
According to John Kilduff, an energy analyst at the trading firm MF Global in New York, refiners are making about $6 off of every barrel of oil they turn into gasoline. That's down from over $38 a barrel last spring.
Refiners are operating at just 85%capacity, down from a normal rate of around 90%, according to figures from the Energy Information Administration.
Killduff said the low operating rate is partly due to refiners being shut down for maintenance but also due to the small profits they're getting on gasoline. "There's no market incentive to rush your unit back into production," he said. "[Gas prices] can't go any lower in relation to crude.

pulled this little bit of love from corporate America off yahoo news

Hmm so they are not making any money so the incentive is not there......... So lets say they are paying $109 a barrel boo hoo.. so they start charging the consumer for it even though the stuff at the pump is more than likely not even gas made from the newer more expensive oil so they are already making money off that so lets use my car as an example it has a 14 gallon tank so 14x$3.199=44.78 so I do not know how many gallons of gas you get out of a barrel but im paying almost half of that cost per barrel with one fill up.. How the hell do they say they are not making any money? LoL got to love this crap

Dude there are thousands of cars that will get better gas mileage than that. SUVs get better gas mileage than that...

A tiny, 4-cylinder car will get you over 30 mpg, there's no doubt about that, the question is whether or not the extra 20 mpg will be worth buying a new car.

another part of it too is environmentalists. many politicians are afraid to piss them off so we end up suffering in the longrun. theres plenty of oil out there to be had but people balk whenever they try and build a new oil rig in the ocean or even when it comes to getting oil in other places in amrica. the supply is there its just that the means to process the oil is whats etting held back. not to mention the whole corn into gas thing is a joke it takes more to make corn based gas then it would to do like they do in south american with a sugar based gas.

long story short greed and arrogance is whats keeping gas prices high. the govt gets a big chunk of the gas profits, enviromentalist wont allow us to tap into whats there to be ha and nobody wants to have oil refineries near where they live. theres alt forms of fuel to be made and had but how many of you are willing to make the financial sacrifice needed to get them out there?

An extra $15 per fill up for me and I have to fill up every week, more if I do anything besides work. So yes while 60 won't backrupt me and potentially 90 won't either, it's still a significant chunk of change that I would much rather put towards paying off the huge student loans I have. We really can't answer that. Who knows what we could pull out of ANWR and how much it would help, but it might disturb a little bit of the 19,049,236 acres so its a no go.

We all know that the oil companies are in it for the money, but there are somethings that could be done to help the problem that are being blocked from all areas.

Gas was $3.08 here Monday on the way to school, and today it was $3.14. I doubt it will randomly jump a whole $.84, but I'd expect it to go up still.

I remember when $12 would fill my car up...

Just get a new fucking job, slidecage. I seriously doubt you're making more money than a retail job considering the gas mileage.

I've got the same job and I make about $1800 a month with tips (though subtract gas and insurance I probably make around $1200 a month). Not bad money for maybe 70 hours of work a month

Gas jumped another 4-cents by me today. At this rate I may need to stop lighting imported cigarettes with $10 bills and drinking top shelf cognac, as has been my custom.

man you must be getting paid more.... do you know what your pay per paper is. Here it ranges from around 15 cents per paper profit

including the route i got now

70.9 miles per day say car gets 10 miles per gallon 7.09 gallons per day x 3.50 = 24.82

x 12 days in pay cycle = 297.78 OUCH

Pay per 12 day cycle around 750 - 300 gas = 450 profit every 2 weeks ?

5 hours per day x 12 days 60 hours / 750 or 450 = 12.50 per hour or 7.50 and figure in insurance

OUCH 6,25 per hour...... I guess i could get a job anywhere making this cash. I coulc of swear i was making a better profit

before today

50.1 miles per gallon x 5 gallons per day x 3.50 per gallon ==== 17.50 per day in gas
x12 days 210 in gas

pay per 12 day cycle was 580 - 210 for gas = 370 / 36 hours ===10.27 per hour

so it seems if i keep the route i picked up today i will move up from 10.27 per hour to 12.50 per hour.

though it means increasing my work time from 3 hours per day to close to 5 hours per day.

right now im the 2nd longest carrier for the paper. 12 years doing this job, most people have quit and i will probally quit if gas does hit 4 bucks and stays there

The total BS is we are getting paid the same rate now when gas was 1.50

This morning here in good old metro detroit michigan, gas was $3.35, up $.10 from yesterday, but $.26 overall from just a week ago. Luckily my college and work place are less than 4 miles from my house, but what am I gonna do when I plan on transferring to a university next year if it stays like this?

I suppose the lack of basically any mass transit in Michigan doesn't help things either (DAMN YOU HENRY FORD AND YOUR VISION OF MICHIGAN AS AN AUTOMOBILE ONLY STATE).

$3.49 out here now, a good 15 cent jump yesterday. I hit my usual gas purveyor, though, and he was still at his usual, wonderful 10 to 15 cents lower than the local average. Toss in his standard sale on Sunday through Tuesday of 5 cents off each gallon of Ultimate and he's just beating the pants off of every other station around him.

Oh well. We're back up to mid-summer prices around here now and we're not even close to summer as of yet. I'm guessing we're going to easily hit around $4.50 a gallon out here by July given the taxes and trends over the past few years.

It's going way up now so they can gradually bring it back down between, oh, August and November 4th.

I love how so many will defend this on the grounds of sustaining capitalism over government intervention. I heard a local Rush-wannabe asshole this morning actually say that those of us who want any sort of price control might as well take down the stars and stripes and put up a big red flag with a hammer and sickle. And the angry and the geriatric by and large eat this shit up.

People can only cut back so far in terms of daily and monthly expenses. It's going to wreck the economy sooner than later on its current trajectory. Yes, I'm a doomsayer in a tinfoil hat, Dittoheads. Quoth Tom Petty: "You believe what you wanna believe."
