My take on this:

This a very tragic death, no doubt...

With the mass media that's available nowadays, it's impossible to live a "sheltered" lifestyle. Kids will reenact stuff they see on television and movies, it's simply part of life. It's up to the parents to teach the kids the difference between what's right and what's wrong. I mean come on, I watched movies like Predator and Terminator 2 when I was 6 years old. They were traumatizing at the time, yes, but you didn't see me going out and stabbing people. Of course, the parents aren't fully at fault. They can't shelter their children, and watch them on the playground 24/7. My parents never really had to teach me the difference between reality and fantasy...I figured that stuff out myself, and grew up without any real problems.

I watched WWE (WWF back then) at a very young age, yet you hear stories about kids killing their siblings from trying to execute wrestling moves on them. Not to sound insensitive, but some kids should just know better...even without parental guidance.

Crap...just realized I posted this in the wrong forum. -_-

Can someone move this to the "Lifestyle & Off topic" forum?

I realize that this will sound insensitive, but:

That is unfortunate, but the kid was 10 years old, and should have known better.

wow. i'm sorry but this will never stop unless every show becomes mr rogers neighborhood. Even then you will get the retards trying to find the trolly world in some rock gourge and get killed. Its sad yes, but shit happens. I can't beleive how much they emphasize 'copying a cartoon, look how in the cartoon these sand ninjas use sand to kill one another'. Fucking ridiculous.

btw, naruto sucks.

This is indeed a very tragic situation, but I hope this doesn't lead to any sort of new tv regulations. You can't blame the show, and really, you can't blame the parents...are they expected to go over all the things you can and can't do in life? By 10, you would hope one would know better. It's very sad, but I just hope we don't see any finger pointing coming out of this.

Hmmm Where is Jack Thompson in all of this? He must have misplaced his sandbox.

Also I dislike how they say the images are disturbing......

Exactly, at ten years old, you should know that burying yourself HEADFIRST is a really really stupid idea.

03-11-2008, 06:40 PM
i know i should feel bad for the kid but i dont. because every time some dumb kid imitates something instead of blaming him for his stupidity or his parents or guardians for not properly monitoring the kids they blame whatever the kid was imitating. so now im just waiting for the eventual naruto backlash because people dont take responsibility they just pass the buck. wtf is with kids these days? and how dumb do they have to be to think burying someones head and chest in sand is a good idea? whats next sticking a kid with an exposed live wire to imitate chidori?

id like to kick that reports ass for over sensationaizing this shit. its a damn cartoon not real. reminds me of a local news report where the reporter said that the internet exposed a womans daughter to a sexual predator as if the internt is to blame for his chicks daughter talking to strangers on he net.

Wrestling moves and other stupid stuff, sure. But even at 6 I knew better than to bury my head in sand, let alone 10.

Any loss of life is tragic, but I'm sorry that kid (and his "friends") are dumb.

Wait, I don't watch this Naruto so I'm just trying to figure out what the eff was going on...

This kid wanted to be buried HEAD FIRST (like doing a hand stand?) in a foot of sand, to imitate some 'ninja attack'? What the fuck kind of ninja attacks by burying himself headfirst in the sand...what the hell, is that some sort of Ostrich attack?

I guess I need to see the episode in question.

hahaha, I guess someone already answered my question - sand ninjas...

Alot of guys will copy wrestling/karate moves till there 20 and then give that up for driving drunk, playing in construction sites ect.... Thats just guys being normal stupid. I think most of us by the age of 10 knew that if we covered are head in sand that we wouldn't be able to breath. And even if somehow we couldn't figure it out when where having trouble breathing we would do something.

Mr. Anderson

Burying your head in sand? Seriously, who does that when they're ten years old?

that kid was probably a "special " child anyway. and yeah we all did stupid stuff but by us being here typing it goes to show we all knew our limits to what was a good or bad idea to try. in this day and age i really want to know why the parents werent monitoring them closer. my guess they were inside drinking wine and gossipping.

Maybe if CN would stop censoring the part after Gaara crushes someone AND THEN BLOOD GUSHES OUT OF THE SAND ALL OVER EVERYTHING, maybe kids would kinda catch on that maybe that's a bad idea.

Not that anything in that stupid show makes sense anyway. I gave up and started MSTing after the Gaara + Rock Lee fight and the bone dragon guy still wouldn't die after something that should've sand-blasted the flesh off his bones and then polished them stark white.

Cool. So are the same people complaining about parents not monitoring their kids enough the same people complaining about kids being monitored so much that they don't have time to be a kid?

Many kids copy shit they see on TV. I remember how my peers and i would do wrestling moves on each other, even the more dangerous ones ( tombstone, stunner). Nobody got hurt, and it was all in good fun. You guys have to see it for what it is and not what the media wants you to see it as : an accident. Simply an accident. Not an epidemic or a crisis. Sometimes kids get hurt when they do this, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they hurt others, sometimes they don't. But when they do, they learn not to do it again. I think that's the best way to teach kids to not do what they see on TV.

I also find it odd that they didn't just throw sand on each other. Very creative kids.

I'm shocked they managed to get the right character associated with the sand moves, also baffled as to why the kid wanted to go head first.

Clearly, the only solution to prevent retards our children from dying in the sand is to eliminate all copyable acts regarding sand. Let's start by destroying Animal Planet and Ostriches.

Sometimes, Darwinism is just a flat out fucking LAW(L).

Obviously she forgot to consult Map.

All right. Let's play the guessing game. Ten points to anyone getting the right answer:
THE FIRST LAWSUIT THE PARENTS WILL DRAW UP WILL SUE
a.) The other children's parents
b.) The creators of Naruto
c.) The company that imported and adapted Naruto to English
d.) The TV station that broadcast Naruto
e.) The company that made the sandbox
f.) You
g.) The inventor of the graphite pencil
h.) All of the above

I was not surprised at all when I heard it happened in Everett, WA. I actually thought before entering this thread that this is the type of shit the morons out here would do. I live about a mile away from the Everett city limits and I swear that there's no greater collection of dumb-asses than in the greater Seattle/Everett area. It seems they are now passing their traits on to their children as well.

The scariest part? Most of the people around here work for Boeing constructing airplanes.

Wow this is very sad. I feel horrible for the family. Although why I don't believe in being overprotective of your child, I do believe that they should at least checked up on the kids. I mean if you have a ten year old and a couple of five year olds, you should watch them not just assume they wont get into trouble.

I could see a point in suing the other parents for the death, that is understandable. They have no right in suing anything else (well I mean such as the creators of Naruto), and actually I would be fucking pissed if they did, because their ten year old son doesn't know that if you get buried in sand, you can't breathe.

Sad to see this happen to a child, but knowing america, somehow money will ease all the grievances these parents have and the situation becomes tantamount to miraculously bring back their loved one .

I saw on cnn (recently) this girl who died of alcohol poisoning on her 21st birthday and the parents were suing not only the bar at which she went drinking, but the friends who went out drinking with her. And they had the dumbest answers in this interview questioning their decision. At one point, they were asked if suing the friends would help cope with the loss of the daughter...the look on the parents' face screwmed I want money.

At least with a 10 year old child I can feel for. A 21 year old who makes a conscious choice to go out drinking, however, is another story. And the inevitable lawsuits in both cases will leave me shaking my head as empty "erudite" rhetoric and jargon will be bandied around. Oh well, at least we get to hear about the imminent evil these said "sand ninjas" will have on our youth...

Edit: I actually stood and watched a Naruto game demo at Best Buy yesterday...just showed the main character, I'm assuming his name is Naruto, who looks like the lovechild of some Dragonball Z gay relationship, running around and jumping, in cell shaded 3D animation. Looked exceptionally lame.

I might just pick up one of the Naruto games on clearance to give it a shot - anyone know which of the games have the Bury-Your-Head-In-The-Sand-While-Opponents-Kick-You-In-The-Nuts level? Do you have to alternate between hitting L1/R1 rapidly to get your head out before you suffocate?

Damn, what the hell is all this Ninja-babble from the wiki page??? Sunagakure's fifth Kazekage, blah blah blah. This kid must have been a Naruto Rain Man to understand whatever the hell is going on in that cartoon. It's all ninja babble to me...

Gaara (我愛羅, Gaara? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Japanese)) is a fictional character (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fictional_character) from the Naruto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naruto) universe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naruto_universe) created by Masashi Kishimoto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masashi_Kishimoto) and developed into a media franchise (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_franchise), which consists of a series of manga (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manga), anime (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime), soundtracks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soundtrack), OVAs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_video_animation), movies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film), video games (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game), and other collectibles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collectible). He was created as a foil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foil_%28literature%29) to the series' titular character, Naruto Uzumaki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naruto_Uzumaki), with both having similar backgrounds yet widely different personalities.[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaara#_note-ArtBook142)
In the anime and manga, Gaara is a ninja from the village of Sunagakure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naruto_universe#Sunagakure), and the son of the Fourth Kazekage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_minor_Naruto_characters#Fourth_Kazekage), the leader of Sunagakure, and brother to Kankuro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_major_Naruto_characters#Kankuro) and Temari (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_major_Naruto_characters#Temari). Due to his traumatic past, Gaara is a ruthless killer, slaying others without remorse and acting cold and distant even with his allies and siblings. His abilities in controlling sand earned him the moniker "Gaara of the Desert" (砂瀑の我愛羅, Sabaku no Gaara? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Japanese)). His battle with Naruto in the series changes his outlook on the world; in Part II, he becomes Sunagakure's Fifth Kazekage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naruto_universe#Kage) as a result of Naruto's influence pushing him to aid others. Gaara has appeared in several pieces of Naruto media, including the second featured film in the series, the third original video animation, and several video games.
Numerous anime and manga publications have praised and criticized Gaara's character. His initially sadistic mentality was noted by reviewers; IGN (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IGN) labeled the disparity between Naruto and Gaara as "emotional" and "a tad creepy."[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaara#_note-IGNEpisodeAssassininMoonlight) The battle between him and Naruto at the conclusion of the Invasion of Konoha arc was particularly celebrated by reviewers, with Anime News Network (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime_News_Network) referring to it as the high point of the entire series.[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaara#_note-ANNReviewDVD6) Amongst the Naruto reader base, Gaara has been popular, placing high in several polls.[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaara#_note-ShonenJumpPopularityPoll) Numerous pieces of merchandise have been released in Gaara's likeness, including plush dolls and key chains.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaara#_note-VizMediaKeyChain)[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaara#_note-AmazonPlushDoll)[11] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaara#_note-AmazonPlushDoll2)

Do we still need a toolbox? I'm just asking because if not i'd like to drop it.

With it, you might be able to dig out kids from their sandboxes.

Wrong Thread man.

Damn...I just found the news footage and images from the incident, post Gaara attack. Truly tragic.

WARNING this is NOT for the faint of heart.

http://www.instigatorblog.com/images/head_in_sand.jpg

Police suspect foul play in the death-by-sand incident of a 10 year old (that's one giant 10 year old). Police are asking for the public's help in tracking down a "person of interest" named Gaara and have released this photo of Gaara. Please contact the WA State Troopers immediately if you encounter the individual. DO NOT attempt to apprehend him as he is considered armed and extremely dangerous, particularly around sandboxes, litter boxes, and beaches.

Wait...kids died from emulating the power rangers? Are you serious?

Edit: I actually stood and watched a Naruto game demo at Best Buy yesterday...just showed the main character, I'm assuming his name is Naruto, who looks like the lovechild of some Dragonball Z gay relationship, running around and jumping, in cell shaded 3D animation. Looked exceptionally lame.

I might just pick up one of the Naruto games on clearance to give it a shot - anyone know which of the games have the Bury-Your-Head-In-The-Sand-While-Opponents-Kick-You-In-The-Nuts level? Do you have to alternate between hitting L1/R1 rapidly to get your head out before you suffocate?

lets not forget the kids who went into the nyc sewer to find the teenage mutant ninja turtles lol. kids are dumb. in my day if you wanted excitement you tried to sneak into the xrated section at the video store.

Young kids don't know the difference between fantasy and reality, but at 10 you know. I imagine he just wasn't developing at a normal rate...

Much stupider things are done by much older people without any development issues though, so I can't say that he didn't know it was a stupid idea, he probably did and just did it anyway.

Some people just don't learn unless they fuck up. Unfortunately in this case he won't be around to learn anything.

I dunno...my 10 year old brother knows better than to even watch Naruto.

He does confuse Jack (Matthew Fox) on Lost with Adam Sandler, though...

Damn, I've never seen that one. Do they all do it because "that's what everybody/the cool kids are doing?" Or to get high from the lack of air, or what?
