Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who once joked that Sacramento was "death," apparently doesn't want to spend many nights in the graveyard.
As the Los Angeles Times reported last week, the governor has been spending nearly every night in his Brentwood mansion, shuttling between Sacramento and Southern California in his private jet.
The governor uses his own money to pay for his Gulfstream flights, which price out at about $10,000 an hour, the Times reports.
And what about the cost to the environment? The governor's staff says he purchases "carbon credits." Such credits are aimed at offsetting the greenhouse gases generated by his flights but do nothing about the particulates and smog-forming compounds they spew into the air.
Obviously, this green-leaning governor (pictured last year on the cover of Newsweek with a globe on his finger) is sensitive about the apparent hypocrisy of his daily jet-setting.
Yet he said in an interview that he needs to spend more time with his family, and thus is spending fewer nights at a penthouse at the Hyatt.
"I just don't have a home in Sacramento," Schwarzenegger said to the Times.
"The question is how can I be with my family, because that is extremely important, to be with my kids. They are all growing up. They are in their teens. They need their father around. … I felt it took a toll on my family not being at home every day. So what I am trying to do is find that balance between the family and running the state."
There's an easy solution to this homeless tragedy. It was pointed out by former Gov. George Deukmejian, one of many Southern California state leaders who managed to survive an extended occupancy in Sacramento.
Deukmejian suggests that Schwarzenegger buy a big house here, move his family into it, and then donate it to the state as a governor's mansion once his term is over.
It's a fine idea. There are, we hear, a few houses on the market around Sacramento these days.
I'm sure you can move your kids to Sarcramento and buy yourself a nice house in a gated community, you fucking douchebag.

Maybe I read it too fast - what's the story again?

I've heard as the opinion of several reliable men that jet emissions may actually decrease global warming, due to the increased cloud layer, which raises our albedo.
I think, between the fact that what he's doing is not terribly harmful (as evident in the fact that many educated men believe it helps), and the fact that he was buying carbon credits even before it got media attention, he's not a hypocrite at all.

Interesting. Got a link about the jet emissions?

Nah, I've never actually read anything about it, but my chem prof mentioned it when we were on an environmental chemistry chapter, and my mentor on my URP (undergraduate research project) mentioned it before also (he used to teach environmental science and botany).
I ran a quick Google search looking for backing evidence and couldn't really find anything confirming nor denying -- "atmospheric aircraft emissions" just returned a lot of results saying there isn't enough data about the composition of aircraft emissions to know whether it's a positive or negative effect. Maybe they were lying.

As long as he's not using money that's not his or getting an insane amount for a pay check this douche can "commute" back and forth as much as he likes...

You're missing the point, dumbass. The point is there is no fucking reason he can't afford a nice, big mansion to fucking MOVE his family to Sacramento, thus saving a shitload of energy. For all his "green" talk, he is the biggest hypocrite of them all.
Yeah, but who really wants to live in Sacramento? :D
There are certain nice parts, but from my travels up there, it's basically a generic medium sized city surrounded by a whole lot of farmland and nothingness. Brentwood, on the west side of LA is much more exciting.
Schwarzenegger may be a douchebag for other reasons (e.g., kowtowing to the democrats and wasting too much money...), but, I really don't care if he flies home daily as long as he's paying for it (and it's a drop in the bucket for him). I'd do the same thing if I was in his position.
How'd he become governor again? The only thing I remember him doing was destroying a car, having a whole bunch of VOTE FOR ME IF YOU WANT TO LIVE T-shirts, a Hasta La Vista Davis hoodie and the "I came from the future to TERMINATE GREY DAVIS" bit.
At least he wasn't paying tens of grands on personal transportation services like Davis.

Unfortunately, Kaliforniyan's like a Douche for a Governator... That or they wanted to try and out do Florida. One of the two.

I always thought that a douchebag was a good thing. An essential hygiene product that brings happiness? Wouldn't it be more appropriate to use the term vomitbag or dirtbag?
Anyway, I think most people talking about going Green are hypocritical to some extent. Unless you live in the woods you are going to create some waste whether it is garbage, burning oil, etc. Politicians should be held to a higher standard though.

Douches are actually harmful. They claim they give a fresh, clean feeling, but they generally irritate down there. Vaginas are "self-cleaning." If it smells bad, you're supposed to SHOWER, not stick weird chemicals up there.
Why the fuck am I explaining this?
I agree with you 100%, as seems to be the case lately.
I appreciate all the links about jet emissions. I will read them after my last goddamn final.

I actually like Sacramento. I've always had a good time whenever I visit and the girls are not as stuck up there as they are in San Francisco.

My sister was born in Sacramento. Of course I was one year old at the time so I remember nothing about it.

whats ridiculous is that he has to buy carbon credits in the first place, if he can afford to fly back and forth then who cares.

The contrail thing is still -very- up for debate. However, the fuel it takes to fly back and forth from L.A. to Sacramento or anywhere for that matter is pretty ridiculous.
For anyone interested: http://www.earthday.net/footprint/index.asp that is a link to a quiz to help you figure out your ecological footprint. Traveling is a huge part of that.
...and since we are on a mildly green subject check out http://www.earthhour.org/
I lived most of my life in southern California, but for the past four years I have lived about 30 minutes from Sacramento. This place isn't fun, there are a lot of times I'd love to be back in LA with my friends and family, but this is where my life is now. I feel guilty flying back to LA once or twice a year. It's simply ecologically irresponsible doing it as frequently as Arnie. I'm not surprised, however. Politicians always appeal for the green vote only to back peddle one way or another.

Arnold>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Gray Davis.
I'm not so sure anymore. Government spending has actually increased under Arnold over Gray Davis and California's deficit is growing. Now, raising taxes and getting rid of the mortgage deduction are real possibilities. The Republican party in California (with the exeption of McClintock) are big impotent wusses who don't put up much of a fight against the democrats and their spending increases.
Fortunately, to raise taxes, they need a 2/3 majority... so they'd need about 5 republicans to cross over to the dark side in order to put these into effect.

No offense, but you live in a super-sheltered world if you think this even approaches some of the horrible things politicians do every day.
I don't even think he's doing anything wrong. Sure, he could do more about the environment but why pick on Arnie when Gore drives around in a Cadillac Escalade (SUV)
