You need the special kind if its a direct connect. Like i have one cable that is for connecting two xboxs that i use when we only do 2. But if i try to use my regular ethernet cable it doesnt work. If you only have regular ethernet you need two cables and a router. I forget the names but the kind that does it directly is crossover cable i think. I do 16 player halo and its pretty fun, but I have to regulate on all the punks in my house.

You need a crossover ethernet cable. If you go into a computer store and ask for one they should know what you're talking about.
If you are connecting more than two Xboxes (i.e. three xboxes connected to a hub) then you need straight-thru ethernet cables.

Ah, crossover, that was the word, I couldn't remember it.

If your into using eBay (and haven't gotten a cable yet), I'd suggest getting one from this guy/store (http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=accaa.c om&include=0&since=-1&sort=3&rows=50).
Even though the shipping is $10 its still a pretty good deal.
I got a 100' cable from them a few months ago and its awesome playing Halo in two seperate rooms (upstairs and downstairs).
Whatever you do, don't get the Official Microsoft cable though, its only like 10 feet long and overpriced.

Shipping is $10 because 100' of cable is fairly heavy.
BigNick was once offering to make crossover cables cheap for CAGs. If I had a box of cable, I would offer it as well. It's pretty cheap by the foot, plus $.50 for the ends.

You need crossover cable, don't use a patch cable for system link

I got a router, so could I hook both up to that?

Yea, just use any two Cat5 cables and hook each xbox into the router and it will work.

As long as the Xboxen are on the same LAN they should have no trouble finding each other.

OK, I'm just confirming this. If I have two normal ethernet cables, and a router, I can hook up both Xbox's to the router with the ethernet cables and it'll work?

Yep.

Sorry to hijack, but what is an ethernet cable with a RJ45 connector at the end? Is that the standard or are there different types of connectors?
coolcps

99% that is the standard jack.

Right, as long as you're not using like 3 miles of ethernet cable :?
Just make sure you plug the xboxes into the "1 and 2" slots on the router and not the uplink slot.
