Since when did contributing to culture become a prerequisite to CD sales? I don't think you can judge a whole nation just because teenage girls are buying CDs.

Oh and speaking of made-up superstars, Avril "product of Canada" Lavigne has also been number 1 in sales, not only in US, Europe, and Canada as well.

being born in canada doesn't make her a 'product of canada' she is less a star here than in US. Being a product of the american music machine can 'make' someone #1 all over. Look at bands like great big sea, tea party, mitchell hunter, tragically hip, cowboy junkies and more.. those are canadian bands but aren't #1 cause they aren't on MTV.. (this ain't just an anti-america rant.. there are TONS of bands fromt heUS that have great music but just aren't marketed.

I have been saying this for years. The music of today is best catergorized as "disposable music". Very few, if any, hits will be remembered like the songs of the 70's, 80's and previous decades were were. The music of today is designed by producers to produce profit above all else. Therefore there is really no soul to the songs. Now, there are exceptions (Norah Jones being a good example) of artists (on MAJOR labels) that have music from their heart and can still be successful but they are few and far between. I have more MP3's from the 70's than any other time period. Back then, image was not as big a deal. Now, everyone wants to be on TRL or E!. I think the independent scene can only grow from this.
