Hero and I played three matches, but the first was on the Mario Bros level, which is like having items on since the only real way to kill people is to throw the little turtles and crabs at them.

Our next two showed as Lucas versus Samus and Pikachu versus Peach, both on Pokemon Stadium. The hard-fought battles ended with me as the victor each time, but Hero is a great competitor and I had a great time struggling to take him down.

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to drop out of the tournament. I just sent this to AmigoOne, who would've been my opponent.

I'm think I'm going to have to forfeit - I just logged on to CAG for the first time tonight (and if you're wondering, "first time tonight" is 3:30 in the morning) because I've got two papers due tomorrow morning, and I've got an exam on Wednesday I'm not nearly ready for, which means I probably won't be home tomorrow night to play you. If the tourney was over the weekend or happened on a week where I had a lighter schedule I'd be free to play...but this is probably one of the worst weeks I've had in college yet in terms of sheer workload.

I'm bummed out that I've got to do this, but I've got to keep my priorities straight. Good luck in the second round, and I'll have to take you on in an unofficial one-on-one match later on to see who would've won. ;)
Next time one of these tournaments rolls around, I'm going to have to give it another go...and with any luck, that'll be over the summer, when I actually do have free time for things like "fun" and "sleep."

He is a bitch with Olimar. I am going to relish taking you out with any character I can.

The slight lag also reinforces the idea that it's really difficult to play with big heavy characters. It's far to easy to lose a life because you get hit off the edge, and instead of being able to recover, you've already buffered in an attack. Damn Bowser can die very easily this way.

Renegade_zero and I are having the exact same problem right now. We've tried disconnecting and even making sure we had the right friend codes, but nothing so far. We're just gonna leave our Wiis on and try again in an hour. Hopefully that works. Anyone else having the problem?

So, according to everyone's calculations, we have 2 matches that were unfinished. One to connection, and another due to a no-show. While the no-show decision is obvious (I'm awarding it to CK64, since RAM was on today, but I'm guessing declined to participate in the tourney), the connection-related match is a tough one.

My initial decision is to let them try again, since this isn't the first time someone's connection has messed up registration (it's happened to me far too often, for one). If that's ok with Spaz and sleepy, and they can get a good connection going, then we'll have ourselves something good. Otherwise...well, I'm not entirely sure yet.

I'm going to go and get the pairings for Round 2 underway, and I'll try and have them posted sometime within the hour, as well as a deadline for Spaz/sleepy, and for Round 2.

You can do it the cheap way (video camera), use a tv tuner with composite inputs, or use some other kind of converter (usually very expensive). With tv tuners, you could get an internal or a usb one, although a usb one will tax your processor much more.

Personally, I use a tv tuner with something I already had (a Linux DVR box) and just write out the input to an mpeg file. I believe you can capture tuner input through Windows with MovieMaker, although I've never tried it.

just curious, how have you guys been figuring out who hosts the game?

what I've been doing is having my opponent run a speed test on their internet connection www.speedtest.net and see who has better numbers. My first opponent was on a DSL line, so it was pretty slow (like 1500k down, 500k up) mine is about 11,000k down, 1,700k up so I hosted, my 2nd opponent seemed like he really wanted to be the host, I asked him to run the speed test and it was lower than mine, but I agreed to let him host anyway, we didn't have any problems.

I also have my Wii in a DMZ on my router (so all ports are open), from what I hear this helps improve speed and reduce lag, but I really have no way to verify that.

I honestly don't care who hosts, as long as there is a lag free connection, which my last 2 tournament games have been the best 2 games I've ever played (maybe because its only 2 people instead of 4 people)

We played two 1v1 matches last night on 3 stock without items (you are xbstx, right?), and you won both. The first was Toon Link versus Fox, and the second was Lucas vs Marth.

You had PM'd me at 12:40 or so last night to mention we needed to play, and I know I was online around that time, so I didn't know if you had sent the message before or after. I figured you had sent it, gotten online, found me, we played, and that counted as the tourney.

However, if you want to play again, I'd gladly do so. I just didn't know if you were considering those as our matches or not. Either way, I'll leave the decision up to you. Of course, I will say I thought I played badly, and playing again with both of us full-well knowing this was the tourney at stake would be excellent.

I'll replay the match again if you want - I'll admit I accidentally hit "random" on level as opposed to choose Final Desination, and it ended up choosing Melee's Temple.

I asked specifically about levels a while ago and Beef said it was up to the people playing the matches. So we can throw out the temple round if you want and either restart everything from scratch, or give me the win on Final Destination, or whatever you want. I'm not going to be "that guy" in the tourney that gets accused of bending the rules to his own gain or whatever.

Shit, in that match on Final Destination, I had to not use the B button for a while because Smash Balls were in play (for some reason), and so I had to make due with only the A button. And with Kirby, his up+B is pretty vital when it comes to two people with high percentages trying to guard the edge.

I agree with the no level selections or at LEAST give a short list of levels you can pick from.

I've personally done all my tourney games on battlefield and final destination. (except 1 which was somewhere else I forget which, but it was still a small level, we both were killed by the level once in that match though)

I think its dumb to play a level in a tournament where the level can kill someone. or where you can run the entire time (new pork city or hyrule to name 2)

Don't accuse me of running away, because that's nonsense. You're acting like I was hauling off to get cheap shots off or something, but that's not the deal at all. I'll admit I used the stage's design to try and get off some more damage before I was ultimately killed, but you're acting like I was doing nothing but running away, and that's just wrong.

We both started the match with a huge exchange over on the right side, where I ultimately knocked you upward off the stage and had some 90% damage or more on your respawn. And when you came back, I had opportunity to send some Din's Fire your way to get some easy damage, which is entirely strategic.

Marth can pretty much bring the pain with anyone 1v1 on solid ground. It's common knowledge. I could have stuck around and let you wail on me, or I could have tried to reposition myself in a strategic way in order to hopefully get some sneak attacks in.

But I damn sure don't run away from battles. And I damn sure don't give up in the middle of a fight and sit there and complain about it.

Sadly, this thread is riddled with "zomg lag" (as if both aren't experiencing it at the same time). Lots of excuses (button delay is my favorite to hear) and trash talking... on brawl... which I find both sad and hilarious at the same time. :/ One reason I'm glad there's no voice chat, tbh.

That being said. There are a number of people who are pretty cool to play with. Busta, the game can be frustrated... just don't get so uptight. It's a game. It's not like in a year... somebody will look back and say "Oh my, he lost on a video game.... but it's justified because of XYZ."

Yeah I hate that, one millisecond is all it takes. I thought it was funny when we would just roll dodge, and then one of us would trip ^_^

Playing with big doods online sucks half the time, because you'll get knocked off and only be at like 20%, but you'll have buffered a move, so you'll do it as you fall down, meaning by the time it ends and you can attempt to recover, you're already dead.

I've had that happen with Bowser and DK way too many times. I'm smashing up+B and Bowser is still breathing fire of something stupid. Blarg.

I don't know how much I like the trip mechanic. I remember when I first noticed it. Then I was playing with a bunch of friends last week and I kept asking "Hey does anyone else ever trip here and there?"

They thought I was crazy.

so, in General, how has lag been for you guys?

the first 2 rounds I played were 99.5% lag free, the last round I played against seanr1221 had a little lag, enough in which I had to sort of change my strategy and change which character I'd normally play with.

Also, does anyone know exactly how the online works, is it strictly per to peer? (if I host a game, you connect to me directly, just using nintendo's online as sort of a "meeting place" if you will)

Or are we both connected to nintendo's servers? (like how Xbox live does it)

It's all peer-to-peer. Nintendo's stuff is just for meeting, yeah.

(I believe XBL is all peer-to-peer, with a few exceptions. But I'm not 100% sure on that.)

Tripping, gah, what a curious thing.
It seems random, theres a youtube vid proving that, but there are moves that make you trip, making it seem like there should be something behind the mechanics. Some claim to be tripping in the air.

btw strell, good game earlier today, were you getting a lot of lag?

I really only get lag on matches with more than 2 people, and even then it's entirely playable. Much better than it was a few weeks ago.

Good games Amigo! I was definitely sweating during each of those rounds. Each one came down to that last crucial hit. You were also the unfortunate victim of mistimed slipping lol. Definitely one of the best Links I've played yet, and look forward to more games!

I wouldn't be surprised if one started sign ups a couple days after this one ends. Although, teams would be really cool, lag would probably be a big problem.
