Well Amigo, it looks like its going to be me and you in round 4. I'm getting nervous as we get into these later rounds, lol

Wait, what?
How do you know already?
Mr. Beef
03-30-2008, 09:03 PM
There's no doubt in my mind that there woud be more CAG Brawl tournaments, but I don't think I'd want to host another one. Not to say that I didn't like doing it, but I think it's best to let someone else take the helm.
...I'd like to think I did an ok job, anyways.
Also, to dyeknom, I may be free to play later tonight. I'm posting from work right now, so I don't have time to update the front page with results right now, but when I get back home, I'll drop you a message, and we can see when we'll have some time.
@AmigoOne: It's easy enough to tell who you're going to be fighting in the next round if you look at the roster. I post the pairings in the order from the bracket I made, top to bottom.

You've done a great job, Beef. I don't think anyone here would disagree with that. And no one blames you for not wanting to organize another tournament. These things are crazy. :bouncy:
That said, I don't think we should have another one right away, as at that point the results might be rather . . . redundant. But, meh.
Looks like next round I'm going up against KhaosX. I've never played him before - it should be fun!

thank, same to you, the first battle I didn't chose my character and it chose Olimar for me (who I'm horrable with) and you destroyed me, haha. but after that they were good for a while, the last 2 or 3 fights I had some pretty bad lag issues, (had a few times where the fight actually stopped for a second or two, never had that happen before) did you have any of those issues as well?

Yeah, I was having the same problem. My roommate kept asking why I was staring at screen shots -_-'' It seemed to be worst when I had bowser out.

good games, but what was up with that disconnect at the very end?
dyeknom
03-31-2008, 10:04 PM
System froze, something that happened throughout playing on Final Destination the first time. Beyond me why you picked it a second time since we got only minor spurts on battlefield, but it froze entirely on the FD at least three times. Lesson learned though, gonna have to start hosting for level pref.
Mr. Beef
03-31-2008, 10:11 PM
ah. shame, since i was about to win, too. ;)
dyeknom
03-31-2008, 10:18 PM
Meh, all it takes is one life to knock off two, but it's almost not worth finishing with that lag sported by FD. If it's on your end, you should stick with Battlefield or Shadow Moses Island online imo

03-31-2008, 10:55 PM
gg evergoo, i had my chance in that second game and blew it, and that 3rd game was just abysmal on my part, Yoshi's lack of a 3rd jump killed me on that second KO!
good luck in the rest of the tournament
evergoo
03-31-2008, 10:55 PM
Great game Bardiya. Besides giving me my first lost in this tournament, you scared me to death on Match 2. Honestly, it could have gone either way.
Match 1: bardiya d. evergoo (3-2)
Match 2: evergoo d. bardiya (3-2)
Match 3: evergoo d. bardiya (3-0)

An Ultimatum To KhaosX:
First and foremost, you will be pummeled, beaten, destroyed, decimated, crushed, abused, maimed, bruised, battered, and demoralized by the time our matches are over.
That said, I demand we play today. Why? Because if I don't fulfill my aforementioned promise, I've got the perfect excuse!
April Fools! I let you win!
My defense mechanisms are top notch...
EDIT: lol! Let me clear something up - I'm actually not swearing anywhere in this post. Those two words refer to today. Sounds like I'm saying "Eff you! I let you win." Which I'm not saying isn't an option, but I'm just not at that point yet. ;)
Mr. Beef

Pairings for Round 4 are up. I'm getting kinda nervous here, because I was hoping that since Strell was at the opposite end of the bracket, I wouldn't have to face him. But since he's being so stubborn and he just won't go down in defeat, I'm afraid that I might have to do it myself in the finals.
That's right, future opponents. I'm going through you to get to Strell.
Also evergoo, I should be free to play sometime tomorrow afternoon. I get off work at 2, and I should get home around 3-ish. Drop me a line around then, and we'll play. IF YOU DARE.

Don't listen to Beef. I can't even convince myself I've actually gotten this far.

Actually, I'd like to throw my name in for coordinator for the next tournament. I don't know who decides who does it, but there it is.

Don't have AIM on the comp I'm at, sorry.
I'm going to add your FC.
As far as stages go, I'm basically fine with anything except a moving stage. Since some issues popped up during the tourney, I've just gone straight Final Destination for the time being.
Do you want to make the room or me?
Mr. Beef
04-01-2008, 04:39 PM
Hey, man, are you telling me I've already lost? :-(Oh, I'm just talking harmless smack. Truthfully, I almost had a heart attack when I was playing dyeknom. That GnW is a savage.
Actually, I'd like to throw my name in for coordinator for the next tournament. I don't know who decides who does it, but there it is.
I don't think there's really someone who "chooses" who makes the next tournament thread. I suppose someone could call it, in which case you would win it. I'm guessing that the honors would go to whoever wants it more.
You could make it. I don't like moving stages either, so I'll stick to the Final Destination-type stages. See you on Brawl.
Mr. Beef - Yeah, I know, haha. But unless my lucky streak continues, you might be getting your wish after all.

GGs aTOH.
I'm out.
Alright, just finished my matches with Strell. I ended up winning 2-1.
1st match on Battlefield - aTOH(Ness) < Strell(Zelda)
2nd match on Smashville - aTOH(ROB) > Strell(Kirby)
3rd match on Final Destination - aTOH(ROB) > Strell(Luigi)
I ain't gonna lie, man, these matches had me worrying a helluva lot more than my other ones. I feel a lot more comfortable winning my first match. Even a win with Ness makes me more calm. But, you're damn nice with rolls and dodges and shields. Something I need to incorporate more into my gameplay =/
GGs again, Strell.

I need to remind myself it's probably best to not practice against level 9 comps before matches, since that can throw off my timing. :]
Anyway, good games. I figured you'd pick Rob, and I wanted to practice against him, but didn't have him unlocked. That would have been something I should have done last night or something.
But yes, good games. Good luck!
Mr. Beef

Strell out? I'm surprised. Nothing against aTOH, of course, but I've played Strell, and...wow.

04-01-2008, 06:27 PM
I don't know Rob's moveset or how far his attacks stretch! His downA smash is brutal since it'll hit about 10 times.
This is NOT to say aTOH didn't play very well - as he certainly did, and deserved to win. I'll be back though, hopefully after unlocking Rob and learning how to get past all his tricks.

I'm game. I have to admit though, Ness is actually my main, and ROB's my backup, so I haven't fully grasped his gamestyle. I win with ROB since he happens to be higher on my tier list =/
When's tonight?

His King Dedede is crazy. Just when i figure a way out to counter his chain grab, he counters back. And maybe its just me, but his damn use of waddledees messes with me both defensively and offensively.

The only thing I've found that remotely works is ZSSamus, but that was with lag, so who knows.

Amigo - if you haven't played your round, I'd be happy to throw down for a while.
aTOH: Make Rob your main. Son of a bitch. He and I played some 15 rounds or so last night, with him using Rob the whole time and me switching around different characters, and I maybe only 3-4 matches. I learned a lot, though, so I'm slowly working my way up to taking Rob out. But damn - he just has INSANE priority and range with all of his air attacks, and his down smash is brutal.
Not to mention the little eye laser and rotating gyro attacks are very powerful after a while.

Are Amigo and I the last ones left for this round?
We are going to try and get out game done tonight around 6pm EST.
I just hope the lag isn't bad because hes on the west coast and I'm on the east.... thats been my BIGGEST complaint about playing on-line. I tried to play a 4 person game last night, dear god, it was unplayable. The worst I've had in ANY on-line console game this generation for sure

aTOH is on the west coast and I'm on the east coast, and our matches were pretty good, except for a few blips in the first round. 1v1 seems a lot smoother than FFAs online.

Well, I guess that's the vice of randomly-seeded tournaments (nothing against the organization - there's no other way of doing it at the outset). Personally, I can think of several players who were eliminated early just because they were pitted against a slightly better player, or luck just was not on their side (Arikado, evergoo, Veronica Mars, maigoyume, yourself). I don't know if there is a way to eliminate this problem. Any suggestions?

That's just the nature of the random seeding beast. I got matched up against Beef in round two... I was hoping I'd see him in the later rounds. He beat me 3-2 and 3-2, so at least we had a solid match out of it.

We could (if time and people permit) do round-robin, and accumulate points with wins. Then after everyone is done, the group with the most wins finish it off tournament style... Sorta like in major league sports. The only problem i see is it is too difficult to have everyone play everyone in a orderly fashion.

Perhaps we could look at this 1st tourney and pre-determine the seeds for all the winners (seeding depends on how far one gets), while the 1st round losers/newcomers can receive the bottom seeds (losers receive lower seeds than newcomers). After determining the numeric seeds of all 64 participants (e.g. 4 #1's, 4 #2's, ...), we would randomize each participant's division placement. All in all, this might make pairings more fair and maybe even allow us to see some upsets.
OR...
we could ignore this idea b/c ppl won't agree to it or there is a better methodology.
Just my two cents.
EDIT: I hope my idea was easy to understand XD

I like the idea of seeding because it reserves the most exciting matches for the very end. I would not be against this at all. My only reservation is that new competitors might be deterred if they're pitted against, say, the previous champion. It's hard to accommodate new players with this set-up.
Another idea is to incorporate KhaosX's idea, and have a round-robin preliminary stage. My thought is we could integrate seedings at that point. So, say, 64 people enter. We could have 16 divisions, each with four people. We could place people in the different divisions according to their seeds (doing our best to avoid high-ranking match-ups). Then, the person with the best record (or the top two people with the best records, depending on what we want) would continue on to a single-elimination bracket. This set-up ensures that everyone plays at least three times, and also reserves the best fights for bracket play.
I'm glad we're already talking about the next tournament! :bouncy: I'm giddy.
EDIT: I realize I read evergoo's idea wrong. Bleh.

I like that idea since it incorporates seeding and makes sure the real winners advance to the next round. Plus it gives people (who would not otherwise advance far) a chance to have more fun in the tourney. The only problem I see is that this tourney method will drag out longer (see #'s below)
Anyways, here are the # of matches it would take to finish a tourney (64-man):
Single-Elimination 63 (32+16+8+4+2+1)
Round-Robin First Round w/ 1 Advancing 79 (6x16+8+4+2+1)
Round-Robin First Round w/ 2 Advancing 95 (6x16+16+8+4+2+1)

Thanks for running the numbers evergoo. :) I guess we can safely say that it probably isn't feasible for us to have two people advance from each division. That, in all likelihood, would take too long to execute.
How do you think we should choose? Maybe we should get the opinion of some of the people around here.

Oh. Well, it seems everyone approves of a seeding system.
But what about tournament format? Did we want round-robin preliminaries with bracket finals play (see post #624), single-elimination bracket play (current format), or double-elimination bracket play? Or another format I haven't mentioned? Should we vote on it? How should it be determined?
EDIT: Here's to give everyone an idea of the longevity of each format, assuming 64 competitors (ie number of matches needed for tournament completion, number of guaranteed matches):
Single-Elimination 63 Matches (32+16+8+4+2+1), 1 Guaranteed Match
Double-Elimination 93 Matches WB(32+16+8+4+2+1) LB(8+8+4+4+2+2+1+1), 2 Guaranteed Matches
Round-Robin Prelims 79 Matches (6x16+8+4+2+1), 3 Guaranteed Matches
Thanks to evergoo for most of these numbers!
EDIT2: And this is entirely unrelated, but should we have a consolation match for the current tournament, to determine 3rd and 4th seed? I mean, it's entirely up to aTOH and ???.

I think we should wait until this tourney is over with and then start gathering interest for a second one. Format could be decided once we get an idea of how many people want to play. With a smaller number, seeding/double elimination/round-robin wouldn't take as long and might run smoother.

Lets say we have start with 64 participants, instead of doing a full round-robin, we can split it into groups
Lets say:
4 groups, 16 participants each, round robin style (15 games for each person)
top 4 seeds of each group advance and it becomes 16 participants
1 group of 16, round robin (15 games for each person)
top 8 seeds put into a playoff tournament bracket; (1 - 3 games played)
maximum games for 1st and 2nd place, 33
minimum games for anyone, 15
If the games played for each player is too much, more groups can be made with smaller # of participants in each group)
Just my thought.

Thanks, I appreciate that compliment from such a skilled player. I have to say when we first played and I saw Lucario my thoughts were "WTF?!"... but about 30 seconds into the match I could see why you picked him. I've never played against a lucario like that. (I had no idea his recovery was so effective, there were 3 times when I thought you were done, no possible way of getting back, and then he jumped like 15 feet and grabs the stage)
Your Kirby is top notch as well, after round 2 I thought about switch to Fox, but out 2nd round match was so close I thought I might be able to pull it out, boy was I wrong, lol.
I didn't record match 1 or 2 (were they too long? or did I just miss that screen?)

Well, I'm going to PM Blue and see if he'd like to record the match by starting and then self-destructing three times. That will give us at least ten good seconds of taunting!
Also, did you want to do an extended set, or just stick with best out of three? Either way, I'm fine with it.
EDIT: Oh, sorry. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I hope that Blue hops in our matches just to record them. Should I make a special taunt just for him? I'll think about it. Either that, or my lazy friend will contact me and we can record our matches normally, which would also mean that I would have to use his Wii and his Brawl Code. But we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.
Also, I was going to ask you if you wanted to do 3/5 instead of 2/3 for our finals match. I would love to do 3/5, but if you're scared, we can end it quickly.
As the current President of Dreamland, I need to step things up with Kirby, Metaknight and D3. I'd ask for your help on how to use D3, Joe, but I realized that I don't need advice on how to fail.
Also, a thread on how King D3 is the greatest character in the game: http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=139061

Make it even and have everyone else play more matches.
It's not like half the people played differntly, it's just the finals. Adding more allows them to show their skills off more and entertains us for longer. Also if the leader after 3 still wins, it won't matter.
JoeB1233
04-15-2008, 02:03 AM
Well, I wouldn't worry about it much, really. There are only six ways out of thirty-two possibilities that the outcome of a best 2/3 would be different from the outcome of a best 3/5 (See proof below in spoiler - bolded are contradictions in best 2/3 versus best 3/5) .
Let's wait for Beef's input. He is coordinator, after all, and I think he'll seriously take your objection into consideration.

Well, considering that it's the finals, a 3/5 set is common in most tourneys. Plus, we're both in agreement. I don't see what the problem is. Besides, there are almost never 3/5 sets in tournaments in the early rounds, so I can only assume that your latter statement was a humorous one.
